You want Slackware.
Slackware is for people like you.
Simple, clean, unobtrusive, great.
Not to start a distro flamewar, and before any Gentoo fans chime in: no, Gentoo is definitely NOT "Simple, Clean, Unobtrusive".
You can find it here,
hope you finally can understand Linux, it's a great tool/toy/idea.

Go to The Slackware Store and get a cute little penguin, or preorder Slackware 10.1. This is not a bad time to show Patrick some appreciation for what is IMHO still the best distribution out there.

Re:Sun / Microsoft relationship is a bit more cleaYou are better off with commodity hardware/blades and Linux, which Sun just can't compete in at the moment
So what the heck is this and this?
And what about these workstations?
IBM are getting there with P5/P4 and Linux. Linux will soon catch up and overtake Solaris for the things that matter to Sun the most - HA and in chassis scalability.
IBM? Of course, how silly of me to forget.
I see that Slackware now has an IBM S/390 port, but still no Opteron port. Now all three people who want to run Linux on their S/390 can each choose a different distro: Slackware, RedHat and SuSE.
IBM sure is bending over backwards to make a good impression on slashdot.

I Fail It!Slashdot declares victory over GNAA
Pater - Associated Press Michigan, Detroit OfficeSlashdot, a prominent news web log claiming to be "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" has claimed victory over the Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA).
With GNAA's trolls resorting to stale material which was relevant for five minutes about three months ago and enabling anyone to "cut and paste" a press release using the Open Source philosophy has led to GNAA's demise. Netcraft confirms it.
GNAA's founder timecop was seen locking up the headquarters one last time. An unassuming outdoor mens room deep in the heart of Tennessee was once host to numerous sessions of blowjobs, anal and creampies attended only by homosexual African-Americans. "I reckon I jest likes fuckin' girls. White girls. [note broken link]" was the only statement given to the press at this time. Former lovers and Windows users Lysol and Roloffle were found standing at "half-mast" upon the sad but inevitable occasion.
Robert W. Malda shared his feelings regarding the event. "Oog the Caveman (a pioneer of ALL CAPS == TEH FNY), The Glorious Meept, Trollaxor, The Turd Report, WIPO Troll, Recipe Troll even goatse had something to contribute to our forums. GNAA is populated solely by crybaby attention whores who wouldn't know a rpm if it bit them on their tender, velvety asshole which is barely covered by a fine mist of downy, pre-pubescent hairs." After a brief reverie Mr. Malda conceded "At least GNAA uses valid xHTML instead of dicey HTML 3.2"

Re:CPUIn btw, I am currently looking at the same jukebox question from a different perspective - to move the picturebook to the car and plug it into the AUX IN on the car stereo.
There are tons of resources on the web for doing just this. I did this with an old toshiba Libretto 100 (the one that's a P166 and about the size of a VCR tape, easily stashed under a seat). For driver-friendly control, use a parallel-port LCD display, like this, and a serial port IrMan with a credit card-sized universal remote. I built the whole thing for under $100, not counting laptop.
Just google for car mp3, or look at CAJUN to get started. If it helps I used ZipSlack as my linux distro, but any small distro will do.

Slackware

Re:A Challenge
Slackware requires 16MB of RAM and 50MB of disk, at least for the current distribution. This laptop isn't even close. You suggested getting an older distribution. Any idea what the hardware requirements are for older distributions? Thanks!

Bring it on.Seriously, I hope MS checks every copy of XP and shuts down every pirated version. Maybe then people might realize that they have a choice when it comes to operating systems that don't cost a lot of money.
I really wonder if MS would so have such a lax attitude towards piracy if GNU/Linux wasn't around? I'm guessing no. To many, an easily obtained, free pirated copy of XP is better than a truly free copy of GNU/Linux. Something MS is banking on since they are better off keeping eveyone possible away from GNU/Linux even if it digs into the short term bottom line.

Slackware and X
Oh, cmon! Be a little fair will, you?
The way I learned how Linux works, as in for real, was by using Slackware. I'll admit SuSe and Debian are way ahead in the ease-of-use department, but trying to tweak those distro's is something I find truly painfull. And it hides the inner workings so well, that moving to another distro means learning everything all over.
But to your piont, if you've read the configuration manual for slackware (yes, if you're truly clueless at something, you can resort to manuals), it's right there.
So even if the installer doesn't tell you, it's not like it's a big mysterious secret how to config X. And if you know it's called X and you want to run it... You probably know about XFree86Config?

Re:To head it off at the pass...I just wanted to point out that the lack of support for PNG Transparency in Internet Explorer is NOT a bug - according to the spec, it's optional...
Viewers can support transparency control partially, or not at all.
(Note: I'm not pro-Windows, I use Slackware on a daily basis, but I'm just tired of people claiming the above as a bug) -

One big gripe I have...
... is that Abiword is slow on my machine, which is reasonably powered (Pentium III 800MHz, 384MB of RAM).
I spend most of my days writing for a living, and I need something that is fast . One of the reasons WordPerfect 5.1 is still one of my favourite program of all time is its sheer speed.
Up until then, I used Ted, which is a very nice little program, but I am more and more annoyed by its shortcomings (no 'undo'? I mean, come on!).
Anyway... I recently upgraded my machine to Slackware 10, and I'll give Abiword another try.
Which is actually a good 'Ask Slashdot' question: what do you use for word processing and desktop publishing? Again, I need something fast and stable, with a reasonable feature set. Cute GUI and eye candy and even anti-aliased fonts are optional. -
Re:Money
The trouble is that a modern Linux desktop also crawls under 128MB on a PIII. I regret to say that the Linux desktops are suffering as much from bloat as does MS.
I don't use Slackware personally but a quick check of their website shows me that they host versions going back to 3.3.
I'm sure most major distributions have their past versions out there somewhere. You may have to use an FTP searching site to find them but they are out there. RedHat 7.3 your favorite? It's out there. Even Caldera "Open Desktop" is out there. (Or I can send you a copy, take that SCO!)
The beautiful thing about linux is two-fold. First you can create your own "distribution" based on what you need. (Plus, there are plenty of slim distributions out there, many working off of floppies or compact discs) The second thing is this; they can't stop you from distributing it further once you get your hands on it and they can't stop you from forking your own from a version.
There is no need to stay attached to one distribution, you can create your own. A developing country can do just that. As computer use rises they can use students or enthusiasts to create a custom distribution for their country. Not only does it solve their problems but it also can help as a teaching tool when it comes to the basics of computer science.
That is the good thing about free software, you can do what you want with it - no one can stop you from doing what you want to do with it. I'm sure there are good quotes on this in "Free as In Freedom", which I'm looking at now on my bookshelf, but I'm too lazy to look them up.
-
Re:I am surprised....
I would buy one, and I might even keep the pre-installed Linux if it were a distribution that I use, but even if I wanted to put something else on my machine, I would still be happy just to have a laptop where I have an assurance that all of the hardware in the machine is going to work reasonably well with Linux.

I don't undestand what's the big deal to switch...I just weaned(sp?) my wife off of Microsoft Word by installing OOo. I opened all of her Word docs in OOo and saved them to
.pdf format and she hasn't missed a thing by me removing Microsoft Office from the PC. Granted, she's part of the 90/10 crowd b/c all she writes is memos, letters etc. Nothing fancy. She barely notices that she's not using MS Word. I've never had any issues working with .pdfs in Windows or Linux. Now if I could only get her to use her Linux as a desktop, I'd be _very_ happy. Kills me to pay $100 for an upgrade to WinXP when I have subscription service to Slackware.

Re:Slackware9, startx, run levels
I thought Slackware was Linux
Slackware is a Linux distro. But it uses BSD-style initialization, hence no runlevels. You seem to be more familiar with SysV Unix-style distros such as Red Hat/Fedora, SuSe, Mandrake or Debian(?). Slack is a different beast.
The excellent online guide does have a section which discusses how to set up window managers and desktop environments using both the startx/.xinitrc and gdm/kdm/xdm methods. Try running xwmconfig as root and your users will be greeted by a graphical login.

What about ZipSlack
Being a big slackware fan I have to mention ZipSlack. I'm not sure what it would take to get that to boot from a usb memory stick but I can't imagine it being very hard. Link

Exactly...or buy a cap (like I did a couple of weeks ago) T-shirt, etc from the Slackware store if you absolutely have to download the image today and cant wait.
Give back to slack. :) -
Re:Am I already running Slack 10.0?
If you read the ChangeLog, you will notice, there is no change since 22nd June. So, if you have upgraded after 22nd, there is no need to update again.
However, 'swaret --upgrade' only upgrade the packages that you had already installed. You may need to use 'swaret --install' to install new packages. Read more about it via 'man swaret'. -

Re:Migrating from SUSE 9.1
Slack uses a very simple package system based off of *.tgz files. There is no ports system like BSD has, but there are tools like Swaret and slapt-get out there which come close.
That said, most of the configuration (i.e. daemons and such) is done in the old-style BSD way, with rc.* files.
Don't worry about the sparcity of features on a basic install. You can either choose to download discs 3 and 4, which have a plethora of other software packages (including a newer version of gcc and a 2.6 kernel) or you can download piecemeal from the mirrors. -

That would be me, exept my name isn't Bob and it isn't a pipe that I'm smoking...
And how come the above post is troll? Have you seen the propaganda. -
Re:If not ISOs, .jigdo would be niceFrom the official release announcement, "We will be setting up BitTorrent downloads for the official ISO images."
Some mirrors put their own ISOs up, but they are not official ISOs from Patrick. Patrick did not release any ISOs on any of the mirrors, but some mirror maintainers probably got the ISOs through bitTorrent, then put them on their FTP sites.
-
Re:Wow, 10 already?
Well, not really, Slackware did a version jump from 4 to 7 because people did not realise the difference between the Slackware version and the component packages version. See: Why the jump from 4 to 7? from the Slackware FAQ.
-
Re:If not ISOs, .jigdo would be niceFor users of BitTorrent, there are torrent files for Slackware 9.1 ISOs.
-
Re:If not ISOs, .jigdo would be nice
IIRC, no official FTP sites ever had the ISOs. Patrick did this for a reason, which he explained in great depth when 9.1 came out. I can't remember why, but I'm sure you can find it on the mailing list archives. He chose to release the ISOs using bitTorrent to save all the mirrors' bandwidth. Download yourself a bitTorrent client and point your browser to Slackware's official bitTorrent page. You can get the ISOs that way, like everyone else.

Re:Nothing to see here, move along...
That has to suck... or maybe we're just smart enough to have our web browsers lie and say, we're running MSIE 6.01 WindowsXP, 1600x1200 24bit color.. eh?
:)
XP is better as an emoticon anyways.
Here's teh offtopic part, and a shameless plug for a really awesome Window Manager. Try XPde out. It's really awesome at the look and feel of windows, especially when you want to move someone over to Linux without telling them.
Now I know that sounds evil, but hear this story out. My sister wanted me one day to fix her "slow" computer. Turns out that she has 100's of spyware, literally, running on her computer. Not to mention trojans and viruses. I did a backup of her documents, put them on a zip disk and virus scanned that on my comp, just to make sure. Then I installed Slackware Linux, and used XPde (quite successfully I might add) as the WM. Installed Gaim, OO.org, Mozilla, software firewall, gimp, and misc games (frozen bubble rocks!) Total install in just around 250mb. No crashes, no viruses, nothing and it's locked behind a NAT that allows no incoming/outgoing ports except what's specified for IM services and outbound httpd traffic.
She didn't know she was running linux for a few months until she went to install a program! (Insert WineX installation at this point. Went well too!)
My point. Most people dont care what they use, and if the conversion is successful (I do many like this, only with people I really *KNOW* and trust me), they'll learn to champion linux to people who are easily intimidated by "techies" and zealots who want to install linux for you because MS is "7!^3" (evil)
To summarize this success story by my sisters quote: "Windows SUCKS!, where's my cute penguin?"
----zoloto
