Re:BATSU BOX
I got modded -1 on Slashdot.jp for making one little joke about the XBOX taking over Japan.
Hidoi. -
What no collaboration with the Japanese Slashdot?
With OSDN having a Japanese Slashdot you would think there would be a little co-operation here on this story. I guess not. Really, how long would it have taken for Slashdot to correspond with their Japanese counterparts on the phone to come up with a better write-up.

Re:Next: advertizing!
God, when will slashdot support unicode, so I can use the euro symbol...
They don't even need Unicode - if they only supported ISO 8859-1, LIKE THEY FUCKING CLAIM TO, Europeans could discuss their currencies, or even post with their real names! Wouldn't that be grand?
But nope, Slashdot is in the USA, and it would be far too much work to support anything but 7-bit ASCII. I mean, it's not like it would be trivial to support other character sets in Slashcode. And it would be naive to suggest that there might be any benefits for American posters. -
Got you beat!
Oh yeah, well I've got a 4 digit user ID (8276) over there. Nya!

Re:Get a 5 digit user id!
Congratulations for getting a 5 digit ID
:) I got 4 digit ID there :)
No one remembers when they launched slashdot.jp? Taco visited Japan to celebrate it.
Looks like not really many people remember when user id was first introduced. Lots and lots of people objected to the idea. Not many people wanted to create and ID. As for me, I decided to create one when this threshold business got into my nerve for not showing score -1 comments. Ancient history... -

Re:Slashdot.jp??Actually I'm a somewhat impressed with babelfish, it translated this article as the interestingly titled "Segway in financial difficulty", and comments are marked as "splendid discernment" or "it is funny".
Sure most of the comments are incomprehensible but it seems better than last time I checked a year ago.

Get a 5 digit user id!I just got myself a 5 digit user id (20666)!
How to get yours:
1. Go to slashdot.jp.
2. On the right side there is the login form. There are two links at the bottom of it. The first is for a new user. Click on it.
3. You will get a form with two inputs. In the first put your desired username. In the second put a working email address. Click on the submit button.
4. You will recieve an email with two web addresses. Follow the first one. It is supposed to take you to change password, but it took me to the regular home page.
5. On the left of the home page you'll see your nickname. Click on it.
6. The last link on the bar across the top of the user page is change password. Click on it.
7. There are two input boxes. Enter your new password in both of them. Click the button. You're done - your very own slashdot(.jp) 5 digit user ID!

Re:How many can they find?
Gotta love the Japanese Slashdot site.. the only place where someone with the nick name Anal Cunt posts topics on the front page. Where's Sexual Asspussy when you need him?

Re:Slow news day?
Umm... have you checked out Slashdot Japan lately? Ask Slashdot has a US-centric slant, just like all of slashdot.org. The two ISPs I'm considering are available nationwide.

Re:NEVER
I still don't understand it, though. Slashdot.jp manages to handle Japanese fine, so why the fuck can't slashdot.org at least cope with Latin-1?!
What can a troll do with Unicode? Please, someone, enlighten me. WHAT CAN A TROLL DO WITH UNICODE that makes it worth forcing people to use a character set that was dated in the 1960s? -
I love KNOPPIX(Jpn Ed.)
KNOPPIX is known to Japan.
I install Japanese edition to hdd.
There are variant KNOPPIX,too.
KNOPPIX Edu TG(Japanese),KNOPPIX-GridComputing,KNOPPIX-RW(Rewr itable KNOPPIX) (ISO image)
My friend bananan_w also tries "PXE-bootable-NFS-root-KNOPPIX" which needs no HD drive or CD-ROM drive.
We Japanese also loves KNOPPIX! -

Re:Alt Graph on Sun-boxen ...Well, this is a pointless post, but I might as well make it anyway.
Originally, Slashcode (on Slashdot) would accept any international character. It would even accept HTML entities so you could easily enter these characters in a way that even if the database could only store 7-bit ASCII, they would still come out to the user. And I know Slashcode is capable of international characters.
Only recently has this ability been removed. It always used to be capable of international characters. I don't know why, but I would guess they decided to remove accents "due to trolls" or something. But there's no reason why Slashcode can't display or accept international characters, because it used to accept international characters.
So calling Slashdot arrogant for their removal of characters is completely warrented. They are aware of international issues, but they actually took action to remove accents and foreign characters.
(And may calling them "internation characters" is a real example of American arrogance
:).) -

I don't know about that, they still use the bill borg icon -
Have you heard anything else about Nojima and
Lindows?
I read this article at /.jp:
http://slashdot.jp/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/1336247 &topic=46&mode=thread
I was really excited, because for ~$300 I could buy a Lindows preinstalled computer AND get 1 year of broadband. I was going to set up my mother-in-law with a firewall and broadband access (and toyed with the idea of using gnomeeting to avoid long distance calls, though I use vonage). However, I can't find any more information at either Lindows or Nojima's site (the articles just disappeared).
Have you seen or heard anything related to Nojima and Lindows?
Thanks. -
Linux sucks!

Re:Spanish Version of SlashDot?
Kudos to Taco and everyone at OSDN for their ongoing global domination!
Have you seen Surasshudot Japan? Aside from the slightly more elaborate character set, it's indistinguishable from the original. OSDN-approved, too.
(Nobody there seems to like me, I wonder why...) -
Re:Interesting...Outsourcing "/.".
Well they already have slashdot.jp, so how about www.slashdot.cn or www.slashdot.co.in or even www.slashdot.cx.

Re:Dear slashdot
Naturally as an adicted Slashdot reader i will find a place to live by submiting an "Ask Slashdot " Story and browsing at score 5.
For best results submit it here. -
don't know whether to laugh or cry. . .Darn you! Before today, I didn't know slashdot.jp existed. . . now I have two timesucking sites to read every day.
Just to stay on topic, it looks like the slashdot.jp frontpage story has a little more info. Regarding this.
Thankfully, my Japanese reading comprehension borders on pathetic, so I won't spend too much time there.

Borrowing more from comments on slashdot.jp ...
According to Doripush (rated "excellent"),
"Of course, Fujistu almost certainly offered Solaris first. However the great and the good in the government said 'Yes, well and good but the OS with the most popular appeal is Linux.' So they went for Linux. When offered by three companies, Linux is also easier to swallow."
See the Japanese are not the only ones who can play copycat! -

Re:In most of Europe
It's as improper to use European numbering here as it is to post stories in Kanji. Not that what's improper stops anyone from doing it, but it does give rise to childish comments.
Actually, they block out Japanese text on here. It's really annoying. I've tried to post in Japanese a few times in my journal using different Japanese charsets (UTF, JP-EUC) and it will throw them out each time.
If it's my journal, why can't I write in Japanese, damnit! I guess there is always slashdot.jp... Oddly enough my uid is in close range there, as it is here :) -

Re:This is a bad idea
Not. 0 and 1 is shorter and simpler,
The definition of simplicity, as percieved by humans, is a complex thing. It includes not just the axis you chose (number of characters), but also the information content per-character, ease of distinguishing between characters, and most subjective of all, ease of acquiring training about the characters. The English alphabet scores high on all scales.
More specifically, humans can easily remember series of about 8 characters. Using binary you'd only have 256 values represented. Decimal gives you 10 million. Decimal + alphabet is 300,000 million. Start adding many more characters, and you're exceeding people's abilities to tell them apart.
How do you pronounce ztz01588a.xxqcji.org?
Zee tee zee oh five ate ate ay dot ecks ecks que see jay eye dot oh are gee.
It wasn't easy, but in a minute of effort anyone could do it. Now tell me what percentage of the words on this page you can pronounce?
Try reading the IP address.
IP addresses change. For instance if I wanted to inform a website operator to remove my copyrighted materials, per DMCA. If there's no comprehensible hostname, my lawyers won't be able to tell one Asian warez site from another!
The argument to "just use IP addresses" can be applied against the whole DNS system. -
Here's the Japanese take on that event...
Er, if you can read Japanese. Here. I ran it through Babelfish the other day and got some fun results.

Allow me to be the first to say WTF...
I never knew there was a Slashdot: Japan. Is this legit or some another cheap Japanese knockoff? (really, I'm just kidding... *flees*
:-P)In all seriousness... this is pretty neat. I never would have known that if I'd never tried their viewer. This is why google is the best. They're the only search engine that innovates. I just wonder when we'll be able to convince them to give us the source.

CALLING ALL TROLLS, LISTEN UP
Ok, slashdot was down for a bit, so I go over to slashdot.jp, the japanese slashdot. NOW LISTEN: THERE ARE NO TROLLS THERE. Oh yes its true, no one claiming first post, no links to goatse, no fucking troll tuesday! Its like a virgin walking down a dark alley at night! Please, my troll brothers, go, go and teach them, teach them to troll! Troll a man's website, annoy him for a day. Teach him how to troll and he'll annoy other for a lifetime.

Japan really does see /.!
Japan has been looking at Slashdot in Japanese for awhile, though judging from the number of comments, not many people have.
