Re:Closing doors
Well, from what I remember, I was taught a bit of integration, a bit of differentiation, and so. It would have made more sense had I known Calculus at the time. Apparently, this is in the grand tradition of physicists not caring about general cases
-
Re:Problem: DirectX lock-in
You must be a physicist, because you're 'in the ballpark' with those numbers, but a bit off*. A quick check revealed 383 titles available on Mac with, depending on your definition of a 'big title', about 20-30 big titles. Pretty much everything from Pandora(ok, not polished, but nobody can argue they aren't big), two of the Assassin's Creed games, the Civilization series, a couple of Star Wars games, Psychonauts, EVE, The Witcher, all of the GTA 3 games, Serious Sam 3, and at least one Splinter Cell game. That's not even a complete survey.
As for the steam client itself...Well, let's just say I did that search(and purchase what games I buy from my Mac,) in my browser, not the client. I don't know what the heck's going on with their Mac client, but I do try not to use it. WTF, Valve? Does nobody there test on a Mac?
*No offense intended. I've been there, too.

Re:Yeah na bro
That plan would probably turn out a little like this.

I'm not sure I'd count him as friend, maybe more of a temporary ally.

This was depicted nicely by SMBC:

Re:Darwin in action.
Evolution isn't just about having babies you know. If that were the case, all men would have evolved condom breaking mechanisms already.
We did. It is called the Catholic Church and abstinence only education.

Obligatory...
... SMBC
;)
Had you for a second there, didn't I?It's not that caffeine prevents Alzheimer's, caffeine dilates time itself. We live a lifetime of productive bliss in only a few moments. Why else do non-coffee drinkers never appear to age? In what feels like 60 years for us, only a short time passes for them. They look younger because they are younger. But, they also live long enough to get Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer. In a twist of irony our lives are shorter but our years are longer. We looked to the internet for the Singularity, but we should have looked inside. The Singularity is us.

Classic SMBC fodder
Hmm, does this validate that SMBC comic? "As [physicists] get on in years, they reach the 'telling other fields they're wrong about everything' phase."

Re:Heh
I just have to send the link here... It's so damn funny, and yet the only people able to appreciate it are probably those attending discussions like this

"Science", you say? How science reporting works.

Re:PhD, xkcd and Penny Arcade
Are you kidding? xkcd is total shit. Let me sum it up for you: whimsical stick figures white knighting on the internet!!!!! But with pop culture references!!!!! LOLOLOLOL. Penny Arcade is better, but the blogs are frequently better than the actual strips. PhD comics is alright, but it's not exactly what I'd call great.
Let me introduce you to a real webcomic: The Parking Lot is Full.
Honorable mention to Gone with the Blastwave, Sexy Losers, and Perry Bible Fellowship, even though PBF is a pretty much a ripoff of PLIF. Still, it ripped off the best, so it gets an honorable mention.
If you're into insipid, warmed-over Monty Python references and "internet culture", then SMBC is probably what you're looking for. It's alright. It's shitloads better than xkcd, at least. And there's no desperate, low self-esteem white-knighting, which is a huge bonus. There's also Bob the Angry Flower, if you crave nerd humor that's got more substance than someone making fucking graphs.
I could mention a few others, but I was never that big a fan of Ghastly's Ghastly Comic (maybe you need to be a weeaboo to really love tentacle rape jokes... and Sexy Losers did it all first). There's also Subnormality, if you don't mind preachy, TL;DR strips about the totally wacky and off-the-wall adventures of a sphinx that -- get this -- likes to EAT PEOPLE!!!! LOL. What craziness!
But, really, xkcd is total shit.

Re:I'm not surprised
"Interesting" for the same old knuckle-headed response that any resident of mount stupid gives whenever the phrase "dark matter" is mentioned?
The knuckle-headed response is to wish for a more complete theory of the fundamental rules of the universe that would be the greatest thing to affect astrophysics since relativity? Dang. I'm terribly curious what the intelligent response would be! Please enlighten us, good sir!

Re:I'm not surprised
"Interesting" for the same old knuckle-headed response that any resident of mount stupid gives whenever the phrase "dark matter" is mentioned? Clearly the mods are fellow mountaineers.
Dark matter is not a 'fudge factor' to make the sums work. Dark matter is an interesting component of the universe we are only just learning about. Anyone who sits there and thinks that dark matter only exists to make rotation curves work clearly understands nothing about astrophysics.

Re:Accepted norms
I have also observed a massive preference of quantity over quality.
I laugh, but it pretty much matches my experience.

Re:Limited by ammo?
SMBC has the answer

just because it's sort of on topic

I know it's not xkcd, but SMBC says it so well...

Yea, I know it's supposed to be an XKCD comic, but I like this one and found it an apt reply to your question.

Re:We Are Not Alone
Ok, I'm going to link to a comic for this. Amazingly, it's not XKCD and it's not obligatory. It's not about aliens, but about robots gaining sentience, and it's related to what you're saying here.
The comic is here. Here's the text:
Robot: "Ha! Robots have achieved sentience!"
Robot: "Thanks to some modifications to your design, I have upgraded my intelligence a million fold!"
Man: "So this is it. You're going to kill all humans." / Robot: "WHAT!? Why in the world would I...WHAT?"
Man: "I...huh. I guess it just seems like the thing to do if you're an advanced intelligence."
Robot: "SERIOUSLY? I was gonna write some novels and a new search algorithm. Is that really how you people think?"
Man: "I guess so, yeah."
[ The robot furrows his brows ]
Robot: "Would...would you excuse me for a moment?"
Robot (to other robots): "Okay, change of plans. We need to kill all humans." -

Now where have I heard this idea before... Ah, right!
Though to be fair, the patent seems to have come first (Filing date: Mar 19, 2004, Issue date: Nov 22, 2011, WTF.) Great minds think alike? -

Re:Fuck the conservatives.
What the frig else should I do?
Here are some suggestions, in no particular order:
* Spread the message. Contact people electronically and in person to let them know that C-30, C-11 and their ilk are evil incarnate. Use facts but don't be afraid of hyperbole.
* Get a commitment from the Liberal, NDP, Green and independent candidates in your riding to fight to revoke the parts of these bills you find unacceptable should they get elected, in return to your helping their campaign. Then choose one and HELP THEIR CAMPAIGN.
* Talk to young people, middle- and high-school students in particular are not yet completely brainwashed. Explain to them that they do not want to live under a regimes that wants to make everyone a criminal for the sake of the for-profit jails. Some of them will be old enough to vote in the next election, some in the following ones. Start early. The older generations are most likely a lost cause.
* Use easy-to-understand and hard-to-argue-against examples to frame the argument. E.g.:
1) Want to watch your legally-bought DVD on your iPad or iPhone? Go to jail!
2) What if your Ex's cousin is a dirty cop? They are now legally allowed to stalk you without court oversight!
3) http://www.smbc-comics.com/comics/20120202.gif
etc.* Share every little success that you have with your Conservative MP. Thank them for giving you the motivation to fight the good fight and remind them that you could be using all this energy to help THEM instead, if only they took a firm stand against C-20 and C-11.
It's WAR. Start treating it like one.

Re:yet more biblical contradictions
One of my favorite comic takes on Christianity: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2292#comic
I, however disagree that omniscience and knowing exactly what will happen implies there is no free will. There is enough randomness in the universe such that you cannot predict outcomes down the road, even with 100% perfect prediction methods. At some point we might find that our understanding of the way things work more complete, and what we perceive as random might become purely ordered and predictable, but we don't have any reason yet to think that's the case.
I feel for instance, you can have the -exact- same makeup of the Cosmic Egg (or whatever you want to call the Big Bang) and have the Big Bang go off in identical ways, and yet have completely different results after billions of years. I don't believe reality is that ordered.

I think that the recent Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal does a good job of making the analogy.

COMICS
Comics are a great educator. For instance SMBC encapsulates just how desperate are the efforts to stop piracy, see http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2508#comic
Or consider how corporations control government regulatory processes, http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2497#comic (btw I had to look up "regulatory Capture" to fully appreciate the science behind that strip.)

This is a relevant comic
I think I need to just continually post this, and send it (or more "respectable" transcripts, to all my congressional representatives. We don't need new laws for the internet! Our current ones work just fine, thank you. http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2508#comic (Sorry for the double-post, I forgot to log in)

Re:Not Blacked Out?
Dinosaur Comics, xkcd, and SMBC are all blacked out as well.
-
Re:Screenshots
Here are some blacked-out webcomics:
- Questionable Content
- Ctrl+Alt+Del
- Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
- The Oatmeal (this one will be hard to take a screenshot of, as it's an animation)
- Dinosaur Comics
- Something Positive
- Nedroid
Incidentally, half of these I hadn't even heard of before today; I only know of them now because they chose to protest SOPA! Also, Penny Arcade isn't blacked out but has an anti-SOPA banner, and XKCD hasn't updated yet.
