I've done website cgi-bin stuff in C, that makes me a real programmer not like those wanna be PERL coders.

Only REAL Programmers!

Fortran or Assembler
REAL PROGRAMMERS SPEAK IN UPPER CASE.
Real programmers program in FORTRAN. If it can't be done in FORTRAN, then write in assembler. If it can't be done
in assembler, it's not worth doing! -
Write it write the first time
If you write it right the first time, it takes less time to debug later. Measure twice, cut once. It takes much more time to find a bug then to write the code.

Command line???
Most people can't even spell command line. While I was in China, I was fixing a friend's computer and her boyfriend said, "You must be a computer expert, you are using a dos window." He didn't even say DOS in upper case.
You know you are a real programmer when you speak in UPPER CASE. http://www.sorehands.com/humor/real1.htm -
SoreHandsThis guy used to be a regular on slashdot, regaling us with all his stories of getting CTS and fighting with his ex-employer over medical coverage. He was posting under the slashdot name "SoreHands" but it doesn't seem to be around anymore (or I can't find it).
I don't think he would appreciate this news.

I had a phone interview with a company that built underwater seismic monitors. They would run on battery and every so often be pulled up from the bottom of the sea, data downloaded, and a new battery installed.
This would spin-up a hard drive when ram disk ran out of space. Lets see you do this in C++ or Java.
This is a job for REAL PROGRAMMERS". -
Re:I say let the spam come...and you need some clue how running a profitable and functional ISP works...
Are you implying that ignoring the legal system is an effective way to run a "profitable and functional ISP". My employer has been sued by idiots before, and while defending yourself can cost money, if you don't show up you'll still lose to a guy who's case consistes of the voices in my head informed me that they definately did it, which will cost far more money.Spamhaus is spreading lies at this point, there are other RBL's that can take up the slack, just because their are good doesn't mean others are good to. And worse yet, their idiocy in losing a slam dunk case is only going to embolden the slime to try this more. The fact the operators of Spamhaus are such idiots gives me reason to think I should not be using them for any critical services, not that I should seek out workarounds to enable a bunch of bumbling oafs to stay in business.

Re:technology is outstripping Justice's understandIt would be nice to think the courts and the justice system (the jurists) would apply due diligence but for myriad reasons they don't or won't.
One very compelling reason is that almost no one has been willing to actually go to court over this issue. The RIAA has been settling for a few thousand dollars, far less than what actually defending the case would cost someone with a real lawyer, so the risk reward of settling is ultra-compelling. Folks are rushing to condemn the courts when all they have done is issue paperwork at the request of somebody, unfortunately almost any idiot can do this for a nominal charge. It is unreasonable to ask the courts to judge the merits of a case at this point. -
It should be hard.
It was hard enough to write, so it should be hard to read.
Anyways, code is obvious to a REAL PROGRAMMERS. -
It is legal, but not workingAs the employer, they can probably fire anyone for any reason that is illegal.
But filters don't work. I worked at MSI during the development of CyberPatrol. You just can't keep up with the amount of porn on the internet. And of course, one of the other programmers who worked on it didn't implment proper coding techniques. He was fast, but sloppy. Why do you that was developped so easily.
-
Get a clue!Only a small portion of code bloat is actually useful features. But it is more related to marketing/review checkbox features -- features that are not really used, but it is added only because it can be shown as being there for marketing.
The other part is that as time goes on many programmers are lazy and they don't think though the code and optimize the code because it is fast enough. There are not as many real programmers that take pride in their code and make it efficient. -

decaf is the witch's brew
Decaf is the witth's brew. Or 'near' beer or sex without touching.

I know abuse, but
What are normal hours? When programming, sometimes you get into a zone and forget time. This is different from a 450lb CEO sitting in your cubical threatening to sit in your arms - to make you type faster. Or firing you for getting medical treatment.
One is brought about by inspiration, the other is by bad management. -
this type of thing backfires when someone fightsMattel tried using a libel claim to try to shut me up. It really backfired, as that got the interest from a TV station, CNet, and the Boston Globe on two occassions.
Of course with me, Mattel learned their lesson, as they didn't say a word about Mattelabuse.com or BarbieSLAPP.com.
But, they didn't learn their lesson before they were ordered to pay $1.8 million to a photographer that they sued for using the Barbie image. -

I did something similarWhen I had tendinitis, I went to China for accupuncture () and found it to be much cheaper.
For 2 weeks of daily accupuncture and massage, and neck and arm x-rays, it was a total of $72 USD. In Boston, accupuncture alone is $45-$70 per session.
I got the Chinese rates as the hospital since I had a friend who had a girlfriend working at the hospital. The Foreigner rate is much higher, I was told 3x. -
IBM OS/2 2.0 support.Your printer card must not support IRQs, why not format and reinstall, see if that fixes it.
At that point, I wrote a small printer diagnostic that would detect the port using IRQ's.
BTW. OS/2 2.0 didn't have CD roms to install from, only diskette. -
Setting it up is ok
Setting up such a store would be ok. Look at Mattel v. MCA records. The court ruled that Aqua had a right to satire Barbie and even make money at it. Though Mattel may be held in contempt for not chilling out as the judge ordered.

Re:Counter Suit
According to sorehands, it is an acronym for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation. Essentially, it is when a company sues you so they can silence you because you are saying things which, while true, would hurt their reputation. Sorehands says it is illegal. I say if it is not it should be, because using lawsuits to stop competition or to silence people warning about the danger of a company's products (or their terrible business practices) is definitely an abuse of teh process. It is too bad our courts are clogged with crap like this; it stops legitemate claimants from obtaining justice.

Which hacker?Which definition of hacker do they mean?
Is that the definition of hacker which is the guy who works miracles and is a real programmer?
Or, does Microsoft mean the type of hacker that can bypass Microsoft security in 30 seconds without breaking a sweat. As opposed to a script-kiddy taking an hour? -
Re:Sometimes, and it can cause problems too.
No, dress is not itself the issue.
A dress code is obviously required in some contexts. Less so in others. I'll dress for a customer meeting, but if a company inflexibly insists on enforcing the policy everywhere -- policy for policy's sake -- what does that say about their culture and management?
Stories abound where policy or management has foiled:
- Ergonomics and working conditions: "In the meantime, my doctor recommended that I spread my keyboarding out over the weekends. I was to work 4 hours per day Friday through Monday, as opposed to 8 hours on Friday and Monday. Microsystems countermanded my doctor's orders, stating that they wanted me to rest my wrists on the weekends." Then illegally fires him while he's on scheduled disability leave.
- Product design Engineer is fired for not doing what he's been forbidden to do.
- Responsible planning: IT manager notices paper prices go up next month, so orders a 6-month supply in advance. Boss forces her to return it all and pay restocking fees. More important to follow the "budget" than to save money!
- Risk management and employee safety: Consultant wants webmail so he doesn't have to carry a laptop back and forth to a client in a seedy district. But laptop owners are not allowed to have webmail because they already "have" email. IT says: "It's company policy that we would rather lose a $1,600 laptop than to give you a free Web-based e-mail client."
- Can't even categorize this one: "'Why is the wrong day's backup tape in the server?' boss asks. IT admin points out that the backup system hasn't worked in two years, so why waste the time? Wrong, says boss: 'Just because it doesn't work, doesn't mean we don't put the tapes in there.'"
And these are just the few I remember lately. A strict dress code isn't inherently a disaster, but it's a warning sign. (In this economy, though, it's not a showstopper anymore. You take what you can get.)

If you want $40.00 off, just send me a note with your email via my form and I will have them send you an email getting you $40 off of your service. -
Domain dead??My domain, www.sorehands.com is working fine, unlike your synapse.
Being paid $140K is not having my ass handed to me in court. Mattel's attorney failed have my new lawsuit against them dismissed.

Written by a real programmerThat is because the software on Voyager was written by a real programmer when 64k was considered a huge amount of memory. Not by these people who think that they are real cool because they only need 64mb of ram and 12 Active X objects print "Hello World."
. Or that it is real stable because the OS crashes only once a day.
-
Re:The only way
You say "am doing with Mattel", not "have done".
I have won the first round already, but paying out $140K is not enough sting to stop their abusive ways.
Come back and crow after you've won. I doubt we'll ever hear from you again.
Legal challengers such as yourself are hardly even
That is why one must not surrender. That is why I am asking for $48M in damages, mostly in punitive damages. That should be enough for a sting for them to feel it and for other companies to take note.
an annoyance to these companies and they'll slowly drain your blood with court stalling actions (if they don't just outright pass bribes against you). -
The only wayThe only way is to have people fight back and fight back hard.
As I am doing with Mattel, fighting back to make sure they are stung enough that they won't try with others. I hope that other companies that think about the same and realize that no matter how big they are, they cannot step on the rights of individuals.

not insightful.To libel, one must:
- Make a false statement, either recklessly, with malice, or negligenly (in the case of a private figure).
- Publish it to a 3rd party. If I send you a letter, saying that YOU are are a convicted child molester, it does not count because it is not to a 3rd party.
- And it must cause harm.
Anyways, for most torts, the statute of limitations runs when the plaintiff knew, or should have known of the act/harm.
-
Thanks.I'd like it along with the list, but lets not post it on a website where other spambots can use it and make the problem worse.
If you see the terms of my website, you will see one of the ways I want to take out spammers.
-
libelTo be libel you must:
- Make false statements of fact (or opinions that imply false statements of fact).
- Make those statements with negligence, recklessness, or with malice as to the truthfulness of the statements. Negligence does not apply to public figures.
- The statements must be published to a 3rd party.
- There must be damages. Damages are implied if criminal acts are stated.

Re:It worked because.....Mattel tried that strategy with me. It burnt them and opened them for a $48,500,000 lawsuit.
Of course it helps that they have morons for attorneys. Especially, where the attorneys walk right into traps that have been set.
I am outraged at this too.
-
I RTFA'd!Even though it got too expensive, they backed down!
I'm not saying that it was right or wrong of them. I am saying that bullies like this only succeed when people don't fight. If you back down during a fight, it doesn't count when dealing with bullies!
I have the stones, I have been fighting SCUM. But, when Mattel was asked by a judge at a summary judgment motion hearing as to what was libelous, Mattel moved to dimiss. -
It worked because.....It worked because people didn't stand up and fight.
New York has an anti-SLAPP statute. I wonder why this was not used to kick out the case.
Some of these fights have to be taken and some of these SLAPPERs have to be hit with large enough damages to make others think long and hard before bringing another SLAPP action. -
SPAM SCUM - redundant
You self-riteous dickhead. Of course
.gov gets filtered out by anyone with half a clue.
Is that because they don't want the government to know that they are breaking the law? Why don't you spammers put your real information in the SPAM, is that because you don't want your mother to be ashamed of you?I also forward the Copy any DVD spam to the MPAA.

Not always true.A majority of links may go to related information depending on the type of page. One of my site, contains links to mostly related information. But, there are links to humor (because we all need a laugh) some links to Amazon. My other site contains my resume, which have links to companies I worked for. I also have some links to articles that I have written. Since this site is more than one subject area, it may hold more true. Porn sites link to cyberfilters (Surf Patrol, Cyber Patrol, etc.), so you will not find many offsite links related to porn.
So, this only holds true with a focused sites. Using links, but then checking the links based on text would be useful, but not just links alone. -
not exactly correct.Mattel had tried to kill http://www.sorehands.com/mattel. When the judge asked Mattel's lawyer what was libelous, Mattel's lawyer asked that their libel claim be dismissed. This was after having to file a 5 inche stack of legal briefs with the court.
Since their libel claim was that they were libeled because I said that they violated the FMLA, ADA, MGL c.151B (the Mass. version of the ADA), I was able to bring this under those laws. Those laws specifically allow for punitive damages, where simple abuse of process does not. -
Re:No Photo? No photo? I find it really hard to believe.
I suspect that if they go through proper channels, or have their ADA contact the NJ. ADA they could get it.

something I forgot to mention.Companies can generate goodwill by releasing their own abandonware into the public. Almost two years ago, InnoVal Systems Solutions made an announcement that they are dropping support for Post Road Mailer for OS/2 and J-Street Mailer for Java. A group of people, unrelated to Innoval, took on a task of making improvements to J-Street mailer. With the blessing of Innoval, J-Street mailer is now Polarbar Mailer

Some more
Here is some more funny stuff.

Re:Laws need to be changed. There are provisions in some jurisdictions for paying fees and costs where a case is frivilous (in Federal court it is rule 11).
There are also torts of abuse of process and malicious prosecution.
The problem with these are the companies that bring this, like Mattel are not concerned that a judge may order costs and fees. Costs and fees may amount to $10,000-$2000, where such a company would spend less than that in a month on outside counsel. In some companies, the inhouse counsel gets additional monies for assisting outside counsel.
-
blaming mattel?I never blamed Mattel for my tendinitis. I blamed them for abusing the courts in continuing their baseless libel claim. I blamed MSI for firing me when I took time off to get medical treatment for a work related injury. A violation of my rights under MGL c.151B, workers comp, and the FMLA. And, for monitoring my internet access from home, for following me around the office and keeping a secret log.
"Three years ago, I did data entry for a month with absolutely no ill side effects. I was tired at the end of every day, but I never had any pains in my hands."
Try doing 3 years of continuous data entry with a 450lbs gorilla threatening to sit on your arms because you are not typing fast enough. Just because you can run 5 blocks does not mean that you can finish the Boston Marathon. -
A friend is variableIt is not that the person is a friend or not, but their own concerns may overide yours. But, when it comes to putting your interest infront of his/her interest it may be another story.
But, this is not age discrimination. Under the federal law (and most states too) it is illegal to discriminate on age over 40, but not for being under 40. To show that you were discriminated by race/sex/disability the treatement that your race/sex/disability received from the treatement of others.Of course, when I asked for time to receive medical treatement, the management of Mattel / MSI / TLC started harassming me, following me around, keeping secret surveilance logs, monitoring my internet access from home.

Re:What about using copyright law?
If its online, then its publicly viewable. While some sites have legal statements saying that you cant use any
of the herin information for commercial purposes, most dont.
The point is to place terms of use on a site. Look at the terms of use on my site. This has not been tested in court, yet.
Even without a terms of use or copyright notice, copyright still applies. -
How to tell if you drink too much coffee....You might want to check out, You drink too much coffee when..
But, there has been some studies that show that coffee drinkers are less likely to get bladder cancer. Probably because there is nothing in the bladder long enough to cause cancer. Beer may work that way too, but you don't have the side affect of wanting to climb a transmission tower and piss on high voltage wires. -
Re:Actually this is a good thing...What's happened is that a client of an ISP has forced the ISP to win in court before cutting off service.
And that only proves that the US legal system still works for those willing to pay for it. This is news? Believe me, ISPs will continue to deny services to individuals or small businesses on mere accusation whenever they find it more convenient than sorting through evidence. I really doubt this will set any kind of precedent or do dick for anyone trying to host decss or anything controversial. If an ISP is scared they will be sued for your content they will toad you whether or not there is any evidence you are hosting illegal content. Yes there are a small few ISPs who will make it a point to act differently but the overwhelming majority will (and perhaps, at least from their owners' perspectives, should) cover their asses by 86ing any users who might get them SLAPP-ed by Mattel or whoever.
