Re:What's the point of compressing JPEG,MP3,DivX e
Yes, they convert JPEGs to
.SITX files. But the data inside the .SITX file is basically that JPEG data unpacked and then repacked with an arithmetic coder. The actual method used is called "Arsenic" and uses arithmetic coding, RLE and a block sorting compressor based on the Burrows-Wheeler Transform. -

IlluminopolyIlluminopoly is played on a normal Monopoly board, but set in a universe where mind-control devices are routinely installed in the apartments.
The default victory condition is to own or control at least 1/2 of the property values once all properties are owned. Each piece has alternate victory conditions and special powers. In addition, properties can be razed/rezoned with the appropriate graft. Bribery and backstabbing are expected, and even cheating is allowed, with a mandatory Go To Jail if caught; though we usually don't allow cheating in our games.A work crew was upgrading the electrical system of a run-down property on Baltic when Sal found the Thingy. It was some kind of computerized property on Baltic when Sal found the Thingy. It was some kind of computerized device hooked into the electrical lines, kinda like a phone tap or sumthin. Anyway, Sal he took it to th' foreman, who told him to fergit about it. That was about a week before Sal was in that train wreck....
Running the world used to involve control of secret societies and political candidates. But that was before someone discovered how to use subsonics generated in electrical wiring along with chemicals in the water softeners to influence the minds of people living in apartment complexes and subdivisions. Soon the secret was 'common knowledge' among the factions vying for world domination, and they scrambled to buy up real estate in order to create their own armies of voting public.
Owning the utilities allows you to subvert huge masses of unclaimed territory, but less reliably (hence the random roll for Rent). Owning the rails lets you tamper with consumer goods delivered on trains, and with the minds of the Light Rail passengers. Monopoly on a certain area is highly sought after, since it allows the owners to renovate the properties extensively while adding even more complex mind control devices and attracting a richer (and more powerful) class of slave. Illuminopoly is the story of the struggle for dominance of one particular city, as several factions vie to gain total control....
Rereading your request.. this isn't necessarily less chancy, but it is more strategic. And definitely more advanced. -
Re:Say buddy spot me a 20?
People certify themselves through their communities, and through the general public.
You trust that they are who they say they are, because you trust the communities, or because you trust the general public.
I can certify for you that I am the person who's website is at http://www.speakeasy.org/~lion/. Would you like me to do so, as a point of demonstration?
If people start abusing "the organization" (and I'm really not sure what organization you are talking about,) that simply means that you need better research methods. People abuse the banks through forging signatures. But we still use signatures.
There are several very promising technologies, in the works, that will largely automate many of these checks. They will, of course, be attacked and comprimised. But nobody every claimed to have a flawless, perfect, security system. There is always substrate, there is always context, there is always an attackable outside. -

Based on my old account's JEs, I'm sure that a lot of neocons would find me "annoying". Hell, even my new account is rife with JEs and comments that are calculated to annoy. Re:There is no such thing as DRM
If it can be read, it can be copied...
They figured that one out long ago.The plan is to make it harder to copy, so as to shrink the number of people doing it down so that:
- less profits are lost to piracy;
- the number of pirates remains "sueable".
Personally, I don't quite get, what the fuzz is about -- if you hate the movie houses so much for this, stop buying their wares. It's only entertainment -- people have given up far more vital things in protest...
And, if it turns out, Joe Sixpack (a.k.a. "sheeple") does not care, then, maybe, that's how it should be... Read a book and donate the saved money to ACLU or the pademelons, or whatever...

Re:So much for attracting really smart women...
Politicians will stay what they currently are: a development path completely separate from your "regular" profession (smuggler, entertainer, medic, etc.).
Personally speaking, SOE has one by one destroyed every profession I've ever cared about in the game. First, Creature Handlers (CHs), which was nerfed to uselessness before I even joined in March of 2004, then continued to get worse for over a year as various critters were made untamable or less effective in combat, even those required for economic viability like the Motley Kaadu, one of the few non-CH mounts. Now they're out of the game completely. My CH is in mourning.
Entertainers used to be big. They had galaxy-spanning events that would attract nearly 100 players at a time to participate in "Cantina Crawls." Then, ents were made gradually inviable for serious play because you couldn't make money to do anything, like buy furniture for your house. Then came the removal of weapons, armor, large groups, and other things from an ent's repertoire. They took away buffs, then mind healing. Well, videos are worth a millions words:
http://furplay.com/swg/download.php?view.17
http://furplay.com/swg/download.php?view.28
The result? Read on:
http://furplay.com/swg/comment.php?comment.news.12 2
In other words, I feel your pain. Noncoms have had increasingly insignificant roles in the game. Oh sure, I understand why: as a company, SOE feels they need to take care of the majority of players, and it just happens that they want to fight. It's just unfortunate that this comes at the cost of enjoyment and viability for other players and professions.
A note about the change to professions: SWG used to have the most interesting character development system in any MMO I've heard of. Not only are there dozens of professions, you can mix them. For a quick fighter, combine various skill trees of Fencer and Pistoleer. Love entertaining? Feel free to do both Musician and Dancer. Use your skill points in any way to mix and match skills and abilities. Now they're taking away this, the most unique aspect of the game. The old system wasn't perfect, but you don't use a nuke to swat a fly. While the new system may work, it will feel like any other MMO. /sigh -

Re:right-
it seemed like it was written because some editor really needed a technology article, fast, and just pulled first thing he could find out of his butt... it didn't really offer anything at all, and when it did, it was all obvious
It may be obvious in retrospect, but the article puts the ideas very well together (and for some reason they even decided to interview the 3 big guys, although their quotes are used very sparingly... may be their next article will have more).
The idea that "it has become easier to program a cell phone or computer--instead of your brain--to recall facts or other essential information. In some sense, our digital devices do the thinking for us now" is very insightful and not everyone realises that. Perhaps, even this article is not sufficient, but if you learn (not necessarily do, for our purposes here) about things like GtD or keeping notebooks, you start to get a very good picture of how the brain interfaces with external tools. This helps you understand the natural gradual progression of improvements that will lead in a few decades to the exocortex.
i don't think anything is going to change, except there will be more toys to play with.
It's really easy to dismiss the change, but you are wrong. Things will change. It's not just the calculators. It's that part of your thinking really does go outside of your brain, literally. Some thinking process happens outside your cranium and it's not just adding 2+2. And as it happens outside, you gain unprecedented control over your thinking, you can direct it on the meta-level, you can now decide how you want to think, what do you want to think on. Yes, most people don't realise that yet, but we are talking about fundamental changes here, not just some new toys. -

Re:Sign the petition
I'm a sci-fi buff and I would like nothing better than to see us get back into manned exploration. Even so at first I was dubious about the merits of saving a rusted tower... but then I remembered my visit to the Kennedy Space Center several years ago. The center, and especially the Saturn V exhibit was fantastic - informative and inspirational. Preserving the tower would remind us of the scale and reality of what we have achieved was. Amidst movies and special effects I think it's easy to forget how hard we worked to get to the moon - and how much more work there is to do.
That being said, I'm not sure it should be NASA's money to do it - people like me ought to pony up some bucks to make it happen! -
Cool, but it needs a net connection
Stealing and modifying some RC4 code, I made a self-contained Javascript/PHP CipherSaber encoder/decoder.
Boring I know, but at least it can create self-decrypting HTML files where the ciphertext and decryption code is all self-contained. With such output, any* JS-enabled browser can decrypt the file without a net connection. Here's a sample (use password "test" and 1 loop). This idea can be modified to fit almost any encryption scheme; RC4 just seemed like a good mix of security and extreme ease of implementation at the time.
* This is almost guaranteed NOT to work on Safari in Mac OSX. It works on recent Firebird builds under Windows XP and RedHat 9 (and probably other things as well). -

I share your desire for a "UNIX Philosopy meets GUI" future. However, I lack your enthusiasm for these particular projects.
There are already some small and versitile commands for X11. For example, I use:
XLoadtime
XLassie
dclock
All that you really need to integrate these small tools into your desktop is a panel widget that supports swallowing other X11 apps. Sadly, support for that has been dropped from GNOME and KDE long ago in favor of their own proprietary "Applet" extensions.

Re:Language troublesSo, please tell me about how you'd allocate the 190 strategies per unit type:
20 footman strats
10 militia strats ...
2 wisp strats
+4 chim strats
____________________
190 total strats
Or use your own words, don't let me put them in your mouth, but still show me that each and every of those 190 strategies is a massing strategy, or doesn't work, and I'll agree that there is no strategy to War3 other than simple massing. On the other hand, if any of those strategies both works and is not a massing strat (and they do), its obvious who is full of it.
That's all WarCraft 3 is--levelling up and making squads. Levelling up and making squads.
Uh, no, managing "meeting" engagements while creeping, like I said, is the heart of the game. Here's a good retell where my buddy and I repell shameless footmen/tower massers. Why do we beat them? For two reasons: (1) unit diversity. (2) slightly better management of "meeting" engagements while creeping.
In starcraft a battle is normally shaped by just three factors: (1) forces, (2) terrain, (3) formation. When there are also creeps tying down a big army, a smaller, better managed army can win, or slow down, a much bigger army. Its cool. Try it. -

Re:Anyone else disappointed with WCIII?
The game is friggin about micromanagement, because if they tried to do macro management on current hardware with their current visual quality, joe-sixpack's GPU would melt. That's plain enough.
As to "doing things in the exact order", that's totally untrue. You could make the same argument about chess, and you'd be wrong there too. It sounds like you're playing someone much better than you. Against equal skill levels you should have several options.
Heh, by the way, I'm a minorly famous War3 player. Or was so "back in the day". Check out my screenshot-cartoon of a game on US East

Other recorded lunar impactsIn 1999 and 2001, I and other amateur astronomers recorded the flashes from Leonid Meteors hitting the Moon. These flashes were videorecorded and confirmed by multiple observers simultaneously.
The meteors in these cases were in probably in the 10 kg range, and the craters they produced were probably a few meters across (not large enough to see from the ground or any lunar orbiter we are likely to launch any time soon).

Re:I'd buy it
Instead of shutting wireless networks down, this seems like an opportunity for them to charge MORE money. Some ISPs (such as Speakeasy HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) don't mind if you share your broadband connection with your neighbors. They can charge for tiered bandwidth. If I am sharing my connection with my neighbors and they are a major bandwidth hogs, then I will either upgrade to a more expensive bandwidth tier or shut my neighbors out and then they will buy their own connection from the same ISP (to avoid losing their email or whatever).

New clients for NetrekIt's not quite true that there have been no client changes in years. My client has had new versions come out every few months since 1999, with lots of new features in each version. A new version of a windows client just came out too, but it's not nearly as nice as my client.
<plug mode>
You can read more and download the software from my web page for Paradise 2000, the ultimate Linux netrek client. It has a nice sound system and can use IBM's ViaVoice for linux to do speech synthesis of messages and macros. Getting the IBM ViaVoice TTS package for linux is hard now, maybe
/. should do a story on that.
</plug mode>One problem Netrek has right now is lack of servers. The one popular server is often full. It also has had bad lag for most people recently, since it is a redhat and openoffice mirror, both which have released major new versions.

Content-neutralityThe judge in this case seems to think the DMCA is "content neutral" and therefore provokes only intermediate scrutiny. This is nonsense, as the only thing that distinguishes non-violating programs from violating ones is their content.
The usual content-neutral restrictions are "time, place, and manner". Judge Whyte has added "function". But the function of computer code is inextricably tied to its content: the content defines the function.
I have posted a fuller version of this argument with source code examples at my site. I also address the "conduct" argument.

Re:Portable Monopoly - not good faith
What I think is funny is that Parker Brothers never really invented the game to start with. It's a dirty little secret. Parker Brothers used to include a little sheet inside the game with a story about the game's "inventor" Charles B. Darrow. The problem? I'll only buy it if they release it in anamorphic widescreen.
What are you on? All the Star Trek series were shot in academy ratio (4:3) for the TV.Apologies; I was referring to B5 and should have quoted the comment I was replying to. Adequacy is dying!
Adequacy is dying
Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Adequacy community when last month Slashdot confirmed that Adequacy accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all trolling. Coming on the heels of the latest Geekizoid survey which plainly states that Adequacy has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Adequacy is collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by placing third-to-last in AST's recent listing of top five trollsites.
You don't need to be a streetlawyer [geocities.com] to predict Adequacy.org [adequacy.org]'s future. The hand writing is on the wall: Adequacy [adequacy.org] faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Adequacy.org [adequacy.org] because Adequacy [adequacy.org] is dying. Things are looking very bad for Adequacy [adequacy.org]. As many of us are already aware, Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to lose site traffic.
Let's try to keep the facts and look at the numbers.
Slashdot [washington.edu] leader Rob "CmdrTaco" [cmdrtaco.net] Malda states that there are about 5000 semi-regular posters to Slashdot.org [washington.edu]. How many users of Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] are there? The ratio of Slashdot [washington.edu] to Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posts is roughly in ratio of 100 to 1. Therefore there are about 5000/100 = 50 occasional Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posters. The ratio of Adequacy [adequacy.org] posters to Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posters is about 5 to 1. Therefore there are 50 * 5 = 250 occasional posters to Adequacy.org [adequacy.org]. This is approximately equal to the number of editors [adequacy.org] listed on Adequacy [adequacy.org]'s website added to the eleven non-editors who read the site.
Traffic [adequacy.org] to Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to diminish. In July 2001, Adequacy [adequacy.org] received approximately 160,000 pageviews. In August, Adequacy [adequacy.org] received only 80,000 pageviews. The number of pageviews in September (as of September 10, when Adequacy cowardlyly hid their statistics) is 60,000, a paltry 37% of its July traffic. At current rates, the amount of Adequacy [adequacy.org] traffic will hit 0 by the end of the year.
According to Netcraft [netcraft.com], Adequacy [adequacy.org]'s situation is grim. Due to the troubles of Speakeasy DSL [speakeasy.org], DoS attacks and so on, Adequacy [adequacy.org] was forced out of business and was taken over by JAT Computer Consulting [jatnet.com] which hosts another troubled website [geekizoid.com]. Now JAT Computer Consulting [jatnet.com] is also dying, its corpse being turned over to another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Adequacy [adequacy.org] has steadily declined in readership. Adequacy [adequacy.org] is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Adequacy [adequacy.org] is to survive at all it will be among right-wing maniacs [mynra.com], Libertarians [nazi.org], and trolls [kuro5hin.org]. Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle [thepope.org] could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Adequacy.org [adequacy.org] is dead.

All major surveys show that Adequacy has steadily declined in readership. Adequacy is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Adequacy is to survive at all it will be among right-wing maniacs, Libertarians, and trolls. Adequacy continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Adequacy.org
is dead. -
