Re:This is fantastic news.
Not that New York is the only place on earth I'd want to advertise FireFox
The NY Times sees national distribution. It's one of the most read papers in the country. I know that someplace on spreadfirefox.com there is a faq that explains this and also mentions that they they may advertise in other areas (ie europe) in the future as well, and I'd love to link to it but it seems to have been hit by the slashdot effect already... :) And you're right, you can still contribute. They probably raised a lot more money than they need for the advertisement here. The extra just goes to helping out in other areas. You can always donate straight money, or like you said, buy a shirt. You can also contribute by spreading the word about firefox, posting flyers, and of course by using it. -
Replacing Windows/Exchange with Suse/Groupwise
I've been looking at replacing our Microsoft Exchange Servers with Suse and Novell Groupwise. Has anyone had experience with this?
I'm needing software that encourages collaboration between our staff, but also allows integration with custom software through Open Standards. Will the most version of Groupwise allow this?
Is Groupwise an easy to administrate package?

Gattaca - Manned Mission to Titan
I watched Gattaca last night, what a great movie. I loved seeing Jerome's (the main character, Ethan Hawke) description of Titan.
He was smoking a cigarrette at dinner and was asked "What is Titan like at this time of the Year?". He took a puff of his cigarrate and blew the smoke into a glass of wine.
What a great visual and great description.

Say it enough Times, It becomes Reality?
It seems like they think that if they say Windows is more secure enough times it will become a reality. They should put more focus on developing secure software, than simply paying lip service to secure software.

Re:Extensions
You're probably right when you're saying that most end-users are not like you (and me) i.e. geek. That also means that most end-users probably won't be installing any extensions whatsoever. Voila 'problem' fixed.
Also, I think the FF userbase is still mostly geeks (and their wiv^H^H^Hgirlf^H^H^H^H^Hfriends and relatives). That's already changing for the better and will hopefully get a huge boost with the ad in the NYT. Still, people who are now happy with IE, probably won't start using extensions when they switch to FF. -
I don't get it, what is so great about FireFox?Firefox (or Phoenix or Firebird) was originally started as a lightweight web browser, presumably in response to concerns about what I'll call proper Mozilla (i.e. the suite) bloat.
It now seems to implement everything that the Mozilla Browser does, and I don't really find it any faster than the Mozilla Suite, and I like the integrated mail client (which has great search, spam filtering and other facilities).
Some people object to using the suite if they don't use the mail client, but really, come on, it's taking up only a few MB on your hard disk. Get over it!
If you do use the associated Thunderbird mail client then you're actually using more memory as the GRE (Gecko Runtime Environment) is not yet sharable between different processes.
Plans like putting a full page ad in the New York Times for FireFox seem a bit crazy to me. What about the mail client, IRC client and forthcoming calendar? Advertise once there's a whole suite, and even then not in newspapers!

What exactly can be done?
I really fail to see any real solution to this issue being presented. Tax loopholes won't erase the fact that there are qualified workers in a cheaper business environments. All the tax loophole becomes is a Red Herring for the real issue. Let's come up with serious and real solutions to this. A. India has very qualified workers B. They are very will to work and will work for a lower wage C. The end result usually comes out to be similiar to what would be done in the U.S. I'm not sure what could be done, but I know that Tax Loopholes have nothing to do with the real problem of outsourcing. --- Get Firefox!

I'm sure GTA would welcome the endorsement, but I can see Nintendo being uncomfortable when their audience is for a younger more innocent crowd.

Re:Browser War
I have Gmail open in a tab. The text on the tab (the title) tells me when new messages have arrived. In case I really am in such a hurry to notice such. I always have a browser running anyways, so it doesn't cost any extra, actually it is less effort on both me an the computer. And it works on both Windows and Linux.
As for the toolbar, I've stopped using it. With bookmark keywords, the new type ahead bar and the "go up" extension (as well as "go up" mouse gestures), it is just so much lost space. I'm searching and navigating faster now without it, and most of the functions I never used.
I used to love the toolbar, but now I've come to realize that it was so great when I used it on IE, because on IE you need it. With firefox, it is just making you do stuff the slow and painful IE way. Try doing it the other way for a while!
I still would like the go up button to have a dropdown like the googlebar has though, that is the one thing still missing. ;-)

Firefox' little secretIf you use Mozilla or Firefox, click this link. It's a fully powered application that you can run directly in your web browser. It uses XUL, the Mozilla project's XML User Interface Language, and JavaScript. It's like Java applets without the crappiness.
This is what Microsoft must be afraid of: cross-platform user interfaces with pluggable scripting languages and super-easy application deployment. This is why they originally fought Netscape - they were afraid that Netscape would become a "platform" independent from the operating system layer. And now exactly that is happening, thanks to open source. The people who designed this stuff were some true visionaries.
The Spread Firefox initiative may seem like a trite marketing effort. But in reality, it is one of the best ways to enable people to switch to other platforms tomorrow. I really hope that the Firefox hackers will get SVG support ready soon, as this is one of the other key features that can have immediate amazing benefits.

Re:Ballmer and FUD? Who would have thought?!
50%? Are you kidding? It's rare to see a Windows computer with less than 100% pure, unadulterated, stolen shit in it
That certainly rings true among the people I know - at least with regards to their home computers. 100% of them run pirated copies of WinXP, pirated photoshop, pirated Office, etc...
Personally I think the likes of Abiword make a perfectly acceptable replacement for Word, at least for home users - and often times businesses would do just fine with it. I think Abiword is an upgrade from MS Word - others my not agree. But it's definitely faster to load, looks just as good (better in my opinion), uses less memory, and has more than enough features to keep home users, college students, and business people happy.
I'm not a huge fan of Open Office - not because there's anything wrong with it. It's just that I don't really need an Office Suite. (I imagine most home users don't.) But for those who do "need" it, I think it's a great substitute for the $300+ MS Office Suite.
For my own spreadsheet needs, I prefer Gnumeric because it feels very light weight while still having all the features I need. Plus I think it looks great and it's a heck of a lot faster to load up than OOo. The only problem with Gnumeric is that there isn't a Windows port (that I know of).
I also have several friends who pirate the "Pro" version of Trillian. I finally convinced my friend to give the Windows Port of gaim a try and he has been using it ever since. Bonus - download the encryption plugin for gaim and have secure messaging.
I don't know enough about Photoshop and image editing to know if The Gimp is an acceptable replacement. I've read several posts where people say it is *not* (an acceptable replacement.) I'll have to take their word for it. My image editing needs are very basic so gThumb is about all I really need.
I have another friend who pirates FTP software. With the existence of FileZilla, I fail to see the point. What can't FileZilla do?
A lot of people pirate WinZip. I have to admit that WinZip does have a pretty interface (if you use Windows), but if you don't want to pay for it, and you don't want to take the risk of infecting your Windows computer with a virus when you download a WinZip crack of Kazaa, then I recommend 7-zip as a free alternative. Also, the last time I saw WinZip (which admittedly was years ago) there were a few archive types it didn't handle.
There are so many great Free and Open Source alternatives available, even if you use Windows.

I have a cute little hand-out Flyer Posted over on my spreadfirefox blog.

Also Grisoft's AVG 6.0 Free Is essential -- very excellent free anti-virus software -- just set it to download updates every day. -

DANGER!
You don't want a "single" web... You want a multitude of them, and carefully isolate them (beyond normal information reading and referencing).
This horrible monoculture is what's happening to the web right now! A new web browser called FireFox is conspiring with the evil W3C to propagate its agenda of paving over the current safely incompatible WWW with the data duopoly of XHTML and CSS. If they succeed in their nefarious motives, all the markup on the web will adhere to ONE draconian standard!
Seriously, man. Monocultures are a GOOD thing for standards, but a bad thing for implementations of those standards. I expect that once the standards that make up the Semantic Web become solidified, we'll see multiple implementations popping up. -
Entering false information will be impossible soon
There is a system under development where every edit must be reviewed by a sys-op first. Sys-ops are trusted members of the community who have made over 1,000 contributions to the community and have helped made a better place. False information vandal days are numbered. For now! WE NEED MORE PEOPLE MONITORING RECENT CHANGES! GET A TABBED WEB BROWSER and help review EVERY change. Then revert any vandalism! If you don't help, then you have NO RIGHT to complain!

Another monopoly?
Great... just what we all need: another software vendor looking to monopolise our choice with their services. I already don't like the fact that they're the only decent search engine - why should I be excited about another browser when Firefox is already doing an ample job of competing against IE? I just don't like it.

Re:Is my emerge counted
But what about people like me who emerge -u firefox? Do we get counted?
Unfortunately not. We miss a lot of downloads. Right now we're just looking at our primary FTP mirrors. We're not taking into account all of the not Mozilla FTP mirror download locations or mechanisms.
If you have suggestions about how to get a more inclusive count, please let me know.
The good news is that this is probably a conservative estimate and our real number of 1.0PR downloads are probably higher than what we're reporting.
1 million is great, and like every poster here has said. The count isn't close to accurate. So let us now aim for 2 million!
See SpreadFirefox.com where we're already looking for that second million :-)

As if Americans weren't fat enough!
Now they can get even fatter. Moving the mouse and typing the keyboard was the primary excerise that Slashdot nerds got, now they don't even get that. Include this with the 5, teh funnay scripts used on slashdot including the automated life shell scripts that they use. Spreadfirefox.com conspiracy!
This is nothing but a sinister marketing stunt of Firefoxs new PR department.
All they want is even more Fireofx downloads to reach 1 million so now they are trying to force those users who already use it to download the latest version. ;-) -

People who have had links to their web servers posted to Slashdot have reported what it looked like, and it wasn't pretty. There are a lot of Internet Explorer visitors, a lot more than 50%. Actual Emails from Today
My sister-in-law emailed me about all the spyware on her laptop, making it unusable. After some links to Ad Aware and Spybot....
Me: You need to quit using Internet Explorer on your laptop to prevent getting more scumware than you already have. Get Firefox. http://www.mozilla.org
Her:
...I did download Firefox and have it running instead of IE.1 point for OSS, but here I come for the win...
Me: Of course you could put all this behind you and never have to worry again by installing Linux and not using Windows. I have a CD that boots Mandrake (without doing anything to your hard drive) directly from the CD-ROM drive. That way you can try it without deleting Windows. If everything works like you want it to, you can install it to the hard drive. Something to think about.
We'll see how that turns out. I've done my part: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/
