People Clamoring for Content not DRM.This could not be more backward:
Ayers said. "Linux would be further relegated to use in servers and business computers, since it would not be providing the multimedia technologies demanded by consumers."
People want music and movies not some greedy pig's Digital Restrictions Management. The absolute failure of "Plays for Sure" to gain any market share is because the DRM sucks. No one wants dissapearing music and convoluted subscription plans. You can, right now, get movies and music outside of such restrictions and that's where people are going to go.
- Archive.org has more than 33,000 live concerts and 70,000 recordings.
- Magnatune has all sorts of good music.
- Star Wreck shows what kind of movie can be made with a good idea and a few junky old computers and a few hundred bucks.
That's just the beginning.
These are the new winners. Their work is excellent and they are the kind of people I want to spend my money on. Do you think for an instant that I'm going to corrupt my computer with crap that will lock them out? I'm not alone. People are already outraged by DRM'd CDs and the only people less trusted than Sony is Microsoft. When whole collections vanish they will really howl. The winners will sit pretty on their nice media and wonder what all the fuss is about. Their market share is going to go up and up.
I'm keeping my set top box for the old losers but it's going away. You can get them for $40 at the walmart and they do a nice slide show if you feed them a CD of your jpegs. I'll give the MPAA four bucks here and there to watch their little movies. That's all it takes to not feel like I live in a cave. As more content becomes available elsewhere, I'll spend less of my time and money on that set top box. I've already dropped cable TV and don't miss it.

$200 million
It seems when something has gone on long enough people or even groups automatically consider it a right. This is something akin to the hockey strike (which was forever in the Canadian headline while it was on). Players, even rookies, were getting exorbitant amounts of money. Yes, they were skilled, but where they *that* skilled. At some point, the game has gone from something that everyone could watch to something that only the wealthy can afford to see (live) on a regular basis. Moreso, most of the big seats are purchased by corportations.
Movies, and many other industries, are the same. The massive multi-million dollar paycheques that movie stars receive, record execs (not the musicians in most cases, unfortunately), and others has gone on for so long that it seems normal, and they consider it a right. You'll see them blowing away that money on private jets, hookers, and crack, and then they will complain that it's our fault when people have had enough of their washed-out lack-of-talent and are no longer willing to pay such increasing amounts.
There is nothing that requires a movie cost $200 million. Go watch some classics like "Clerks," which was popular despite it's rather low budget. Better yet, go download (or if you're really into supporting the true artists, buy) a copy of Star Wreck, at least to view the SFX. You know what... the acting isn't bad at all, and the effects... pretty damn good if you ask me. All that down with hard work and a passion for what was being done. Sorry, but I'm down with paying for a movie in order to see a ruined reversion of a book, a dozen previews/commercials, and some idiot telling me that I shouldn't pirate movies (if I was, would I be sitting in the damn theatre watching that crap) and equating it to stealing a purse. -
Re:Why Movies Suck
How come the cheaper independent movies cost the same as a over priced typical hollywood movie?
Actually, Star Wreck can be downloaded for free from the makers webpage, http://www.starwreck.com/, and the DVD, if ordered from the same page, costs 9.90 euros.
-
Try out a "zero budget" Star Treck Movie. That's right, next to nothing for Star Wreck. All you need is a good idea, several computers, a camera, a blue screen and time. Most Star Treck movies dissappoint, this one does not.
-
Guess that means I won't buy any HDCP contentSeems the opportunity's ripe for Creative-Commons licensed movies.
I can't remember the last movie I really enjoyed enough to want it on a DVD player anyway; and creative commons licensed moves like The Perkinning are really no worse than the expensive stuff these days.
I'm certainly not going to upgrade my graphics card just for DRM any more than I would downgrade my OS to windows (which'd probably also be required) -
Re: BitTorrent isn't criminal - get this straight
Using BitTorrent doesn't imply stealing. There are a great many very legitimate uses of BitTorrent. For example, you can officially download Sun Microsystems' OpenSolaris through BitTorrent. Mandriva Linux is distributed to its club members also via BitTorrent. There are official distributions of movies like Star Wreck done through BitTorrent. Very legitimate games like Blizzard Entertainment's hugely successful World of Warcraft use the BitTorrent protocol to distribute their patches.
It's because people like you confuse tools and acts that the French government feels it can follow the recommendations of artist organisations and push for implementations of controls in P2P tools such as BitTorrent, in the context of it's new DADVSI law projects.
I would like, here, to remind everybody who hasn't yet figured it out, that a hammer, while it can be used to kill someone by hitting them on the head hard enough, isn't considered a criminal's tool... and as such doesn't implement all kinds of ridiculous controls. Some of the users may be criminals... but there are very legitimate uses for a hammer... just as there are for BitTorrent clients. -
I Prefer Pirk
I have seen one episode from this series (It also had an actor from the originial series). It was trash, poorly written, poorly acted and not very entertaining. As a contrast, I really enjoyed the parody "Star Wreck - In the Pirkinning". Stunning CGIs, great look and sound and quite funny story. The actors are mostly amateurs as well, but they seem to be just perfect for this film. I lift my hat to the makers of Star Wreck.

Re:holy underwhelming
Well, sometimes they're good both behind and in front of the cameras.

Re:No kids == Instant win
It won't be the next big thing but I seen far worse. That norwegian star trek/babylon 5 "comedy" for one.
If you're referring to http://www.starwreck.com/, it's Finnish, not Norwegian. -
Movie Quality Reder Farm is Chepar than You Think. The "render farm" for Star Wreck is in the kitchen. Look down the page or click here for image. Looks like four of five PCs to me and if that's all it takes, an eight processor cell can do it. Will it go real time? I don't know, but the reviewer saw for himself.

Re:Star Wreck...The DVD has been for sale from August. The order form is on the main site. One thing about the DVD: It's in PAL format. IIRC, they were making an NTSC version of the DVD. So all of you who don't own a DVD-player which can play PAL DVDs, I recommend you wait for the NTSC version.

Re:Fan Films
Although it's not a Star Wars fan film, Star Wreck is a good example of IT nerds meeting film geeks.
-
Star Wreck: The End of HollywoodStar Wreck: In The Pirkinning is a film you all have seen (and just go away and don't come back if you haven't, as this is a nerd site). As such, you know it is only available on BitTorrent.
I had a positively hell of a time getting the damned thing in my PC.
I clicked the torrent link from their web page and the torrent wouldn't start. Damn.
So I clicked on the client link; it turned out to be e-donkey, which I already had.
See, when LOTR came out, I couldn't get a ticket (the theaters were sold out), so I took the four hours to download it and... jesus, it was all fuzzy and the sound sucked. I watched five minutes of it and deleted it, and impatiently waited until it came out on DVD (and got tickets to II Towers early). And promptly forgot about bittorrent.
But bittorrent is the only way to get SW:ITP.
I'm on win98 at home; I love Mandrake but Linux hates my vid card (or ATI hates Linux, pick one). e-donkey said there were "security issues" and i should upgrade, so I DLed the upgrade. As soon as I started instaling, it demended that I let spyware/adware in. I clicked the "hell no go fuck yourself" button and went back to the old version, which crashed (actually, I mean it rebooted) the PC about every 20 minutes.
Guess what? Cancelling the e-donkey install doesn't cancel the spyware install! God damn those evil bastard motherf... sorry, I get mad.
The movie was well worth the aggravation. It was the funniest movie I've seen since HHGTTG (which wasn't as funny as the BBC version BTW).
Anyway, my experience taught me 2 things about the MPAA's "fight about piracy" - they don't care about piracy. No way in hell is it any way shape or form a threat. NOBODY is going to go through all that bullshit to get a movie unless it's a) not available anywhere else and you have good information it kicks ass (like ST:ITP) or b) you're a penniless loser who Holywood isn't getting a dime from anyway.
BUT the movie industry spends MILLIONS making a movie, and here a bunch of nerds just make their own incredibly funny movie ("But you said light beers...") which is head and shoulders above any B Movie I've ever seen; these amateurs did a much better job than any monster movie maker ever did.
And they GAVE IT AWAY FOR FREE!! Hollywood execs must be sweating bullets and doing their damndest to kill the internet, exactly like and for the exact reasons the RIAA wants the internet dead.
THEIR CASH COW HAS MAD COW DISEASE and is dying. My local musician friends who give CDs away, post the MP3s or (better) FLACs on the internet threaten the established music recording industry the same way.
JUST LIKE MICROSOFT hates Linux. It's the same thing.
So let's stop calling a spade a "pointy shovel," shall we? MPAA, RIAA, Microsoft fear one thing: competetion. We, the people, are finally making beachheads against the corporates. It isn't against "pirates" or illegal downloads. It's the legal downloads they fear.

Re:What the hell... A review (no major spoilers)
Actually, it's AMISbios, according to a message by someone called ZatHraS at the Star Wreck discussion forum http://forum.starwreck.com/viewtopic.php?t=1608&p
o stdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0."Amis" is short for "ammattikoulu" (Finnish), which can be translated "vocational school". "Hitsaajat" in
AMISbios 6.6 by Hitsaajat technologies Inc.
is a plural form of "hitsaaja" (Finnish), which means "welder". -
Re: Translations
I recognize that it is supposed to be like that because it is a joke- but it is really weak as a joke- it seemed more silly than funny. Changing the weapons to standard names would strengthen the piece for me and make the other humor stand out more.
The weird technical terminology in SW:ITP (such as "hand twinkler") has been consistently used in the previous Star Wreck movies, as well. They names are equally silly in the original Finnish dialog. There isn't really much you can do about it any longer, as those terms have become an integral part of the Star Wreck series.
That being said, if you have already seen the movie in its entirety, and don't fear of being spoiled any more, you might want to take a look at the annotated English translation which gives some backround to of many of the more peculiar word choices and figures of speech in the English subtitles.
Anyone considering fansubbing or fandubbing In the Pirkinning should study that document very carefully in order not to miss the many in-jokes and subleties in the original script.
Moreover, it would be highly advisable to contact the authors before conceiving translation projects of any kind so that things can be kept well-coordinated and technically sound, and you don't end up needlessly duplicating projects that others have already started working on.

Tip: use the torrent for maximized download
Please use the torrent file for maximized download. The servers are a bit crowded at the moment. There are several servers in New York, London and in Finland servicing the website and the direct downloads. However those servers typically have only a FE-network interface (100mbps) so it gets pretty crowded in an instant.
However right now at the time of this post it's almost midnight in local Finnish time (EET) so downloading from the Finnish servers might be the fastest direct download link ATM. Lots of fins are either partying/boozing or sleeping at the moment, or have downloaded the movie earlier today.
The Finnish servers are:
http://www-fi.starwreck.com/
http://www-fi2.starwreck.com/
However it is strongly adviced that you use bittorrent - if you want to get the movie a bit faster ;-) -

I'm looking forward to the fan film Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning getting Finnished.
Movies on another site, the space battles, are kind of amusing, but pretty silly. -
Re:I'd love a breakdown of legal vs. illegal files
None of the videos you mention as examples can be legally downloaded without the permission of all the copyright holders.
For example, in the case of Star Trek fan videos, you'd also probably need permission from the holders of the copyright for Star Trek itself (Paramount, IIRC).
Legal, with explicit permission from Roddenbery's estate.
Legal, under parody laws.
Other videos such as "Starship Exeter" and "Hidden Frontier" are of questionable nature for the producers (their copyright), but legal for you to download. Remember, the people you are getting it from have a copyright of their own, which they may exercise. The only issue is that they may liable for infringing on other's intellectual rights.
As for the Presidential Debates, there are several places where you can get them with the full permission of the copyright holder. Same thing with commericals. e.g. As a viral marketing technique, Accenture provided their videos to the public after they changed their name from Anderson Consulting.
You should probably review your list. It's not legal to torrent things unless:
My list generally assumes that the copyright holders are the ones distributing the work. Examples: Xandros Free ISO, Developing for the Mozilla Platform eBook, Firebird Database, and America's Army.
In short, there are plenty of legal uses for BitTorrent. Legal issues still exist, but no more so than any other downloadable content. -
Re:I may screw this up...Check out the trailer for the next Star Wreck movie: Star Wreck
So yes, big special effects can be done on shoestring budgets.
The real problem now, though, is mostly an issue of people simply not having money. Wealth has become so concentrated in our society that breaking out of poverty in any way other than abject slavery is becoming extraordinarily difficult. Big business gets no sympathy from the working poor.
-
Aren't we all looking forward to
the Star Wreck movie?
-
Re:Hilarious...
I've seen Spaceballs and yes - it is absolutely magnificient!
As for the trailer, the team said that they made it like a serious movie. The movie itself will be filled with humour, but probably with more mature jokes than the school-boy level jokes in the earlier Star Wrecks.
I'm afraid that SW will never see the light on the big screen - without counting the world premiere where only the people participated in the movie in some way (like me as a statist ie. extra ie. mass rioter in the riot scene seen in the trailer). Although it would probably raise Finnkino ticket sales.

Well.. the first Samuli Torssonen's Star Wreck was from the year 1992 and he had no idea of the books. "Star Wreck" as the name is quite easy to come up with as a Star Trek parody name. Here are the old wrecks.
