Far from it
WAP is alive and well, and is used for mobile porn.

MS has lost control of their own APIOne thing which is interesting is that Microsoft's API has taken on a life and existence of its own. MS is a slave to Win32, not the other way around. This implies that if Longhorn doesn't support the Win32 API, it will be competing against all the other things that also don't support Win32, such as Linux. History has shown that Microsoft's ownership of the Win32 API doesn't lead to ownership of other markets (cf the Xbox).
The other interesting implication of this is that it protects Wine. MS can't simply break the Win32 API, so Wine has a fixed target.

This is no big dealOpenGL is just a library. You can link it in to anything which allows libraries to be linked in. That includes C programs, Java programs (JNI), C++ programs. But it doesn't stop there... PHP has a modules/extension mechanism; it can link in DSO files. But so can Apache and a host of other things. In fact, maybe I'll write an Apache/OpenGL module so that people can make stuff appear on my screen by doing web stuff... that would be really easy to do if you've written some Apache modules before, and I've done plenty of that, but I'm not really sure what I would do with this.

How long is the iPod thing going to last? With all of its other innovations (ie, the Macintosh), Apple sets itself up so that no one else can easily copy its unique design features. For example, MacOS has always had vastly better usability than anything else. It has taken years for MS Windows and KDE to catch up. That hasn't given Apple any kind of market dominance, but a lot of people still believe that if you buy a Mac, stuff just works and is easy and intuitive, and they're more right about that than with any other computer system type.
The iPod is a different thing. It's just a music player with some storage and a cool look. It's the kind of thing that can be designed fairly easily. It requires the iTunes service, but that's also something which any company can set up for not too much money. I guess it gives Apple some "cred" but it also sets Apple up to be priced out of the market when iPod-like things become commodities. Just wondering... Do any iPod users have thoughts on this?

KDEI have nothing to worry about! I use KDE.
More seriously, this is very dangerous. The patent office and the courts need to recalibrate their obviousness-meter. In this particular case, there must be prior art, right?

The Open Source Office is here, and getting betterThis is yet another component of the Open Source Office. Right now, OpenOffice.org and Evolution together provide a great deal of functionality, and programs like this one are going to fill in. When OpenOffice 2.0 comes out, with good KDE integration, everyone else will be trying to catch up with Linux on this. Here at SteamyMobile, we already use all Open Source office products.

Obligatory /. posts
- NetBSD has now been ported to the Colossus architecture.
- Can it be over-clocked?
- Yes, it could be over-clocked, but that would require more energy than can be gotten from fossil fuels, so it would need either solar power, a new battery technology, or, let's not kid ourselves, nuclear power.
- SCO wants them to send $699.

My one wish for them: file formatsI think having an office suite written in Java is a fantastic idea. It means that we can have the same software running on MS Windows, Linux, OSX, and others. Hopefully Kaffe will soon be at a point where it can run stuff like this, which will means the *BSDs, AmigaOS and whatever else runs GCC will be able to run Java.
My one complaint about EIoffice is the file formats. The last thing we need is yet another file format. OpenOffice/StarOffice, KOffice*, TextMaker*, and Abiword can all save documents in StarOffice format (* these two will have that feature in their next release). We have a rule here at SteamyMobile that you can use whatever office suite you want, so long as it uses the StarOffice format, meaning that in the future, when document search and indexing programs are released, they will all be able to use the same format. If EIOffice could that, we would use it too.

MS is ahead of Open Source on encryptionThe Open Source movement loves to talk about encryption and security, but it's all talk. Is there an open source email encryption protocol, which is implemented under a license which allows it to be linked in to all kinds of software? No, there's gpg, which is under GPL, which means it can only be used in other GPL software. Anyway, the author, Werner Koch, is so confused about security that he thinks that making it as a linkable library would somehow compromise security. D'ohh! Do any of the standard Linux filesystems (ext2, ext3, ReiserFS) support encryption? No. There are clunky loopback kludges you can wrap over them, but they have the drawback of being clunky kludge wrappers. If you want encryption, it needs to be done at the application layer. Given that this thread is about databases, how do Postgres and MySQL fare in that department? Can either of them produce PGP-signed database results? No (that gpg again). Can either Postgres or MySQL store data in encrypted formats? No again, unless it is implemented at the application layer.
Ok, how about encryption on the network? Here we have some things to look up to. We have OpenSSL which is perfectly integrated into the Apache 2 server and a bunch of other places. That's good. We have OpenSSH which is effective, but somewhat brain-dead in that it provides a tunnel mechanism, but only so long as you keep a console open! D'ohh! Mercifully, Linux does have good ipsec support for tunneling.
Now let's look at other features in the Linux kernel. It has modes for running signed or encrypted ELF files, right? Wrong! Plain old plain-text should be good enough! Did someone forget support for accessing encrypted files? Guess so.
Ok, but we must be doing better at the authentication level, right? Wrong! You get your choice of plain old passwords, s/key or RSA keys, and that's it. Tokens? We don't need no stinking tokens apparently.
So let's look at the score. How are we doing? Not so well. The answer seems to be "encrypt at the application layer." I'm not impressed.
I'm sorry if this post sounds like a big troll, and I'm sure it will pick up some troll points here and there, but I'm trying to point out that there are some major gaps in Open Source's encryption picture. In some ways this goes back to the old days of PGP itself, with self-promoter Phil Zimmerman releasing his abysmally bad source code under a not-quite open source license, and then Werner Koch picks up the torch by releasing much better source code but still with naive limitations (no library) and the wrong license.
Someday when I have time I would like to help fix some of these problems.

Wordpress looks good, except the database...It looks like Wordpress is the way to go except that it is quite tied to MySQL. I know that MySQL is popular, but for those of us who have already built our sites on Postgres, it is a bit of a pain to switch. Fortunately there are 10 others to choose from in that article; hopefully some of them will suport PG.

Is it worth it?I've never seen this film, but of course I'm curious about it, but given Lucas' real directing talent or lack thereof, should I rent this DVD? Or am I better off with Battlefield Earth?

Buzzing beesI still like the idea of using bees to detect mines. Apparently they have a better sense of smell than dogs or rats, they are cheap and easy to train, and they produce honey which can then be used in baklava.

Popular science?Isn't there something in the FAQ about not running any stories from Popular Science? I seem to remember that Popular Science has now become just a military porn rag. They shifted from 50% flying-cars-real-soon-now/50% super-weapons to about 90% super-weapons/10% whatever. I refuse to click on the link.

OpenBSD is cool, new CD just came outI just got the new CD yesterday, together with some stylish OpenBSD t-shirts. However, it seems to be showing up many of the problems of a monolithic kernel, namely that you have to wait for your favorite device to be built in to the kernel, or you have to build your own kernel. With a small team focused on security development, not on device drivers, this means that the kernel is definitely more limited than Linux. It seems like it would be better to get as much stuff out of the kernel as possible, so that outside people can work on it easily, and so the OpenBSD team can focus on the security aspects. Also it would be cool if they could integrate some of the Mandatory Access Control stuff and policy/capabilities ideas into it, instead of just grinding through code audits.... I know, they have moved away from emphasizing code audits, which is good, but they could move further away from it.

Great, so what do we do about it?
I saw this site: http://store.mam-a-store.com/ which has "archival" type of CDs. How good are these? The site claims it has special CDs with special coatings, improved dyes, and even a water-based marking pen to label them. Does this stuff work? It does seem that plain old CompUSA recordables won't last very long, especially if they are marked with a Sharpie, which is what we all do. If I have files that I want to last for many years, what should I do with them? ---------- Free mobile porn

Hopefully the FCC will stay awayThe FCC has been muttering about/threatening to regulate VoIP as telephony. This would allegedly have some "benefits" like 911 service working from VoIP and "reliability" but it seems like it is impossible to offer free calling service under FCC regulation, much like it is impossible to have a new drug approved by the FDA without tons of money behind it, even if the drug itself is non-commercial. Hopefully the regulators at the FCC will stay away from VoIP until it is so entrenched that it will be tough to stop, like P2P services.
