Teaser trailer background
This is a little off-topic, but I heard that the Episode 2 trailer was physically attached to the beginning of the reels of Monsters Inc. So, in essence, the teaser is the beginning of Monsters Inc. This was arranged by George Lucas and Pixar since 20th Century Fox and Disney didn't want the trailer in front of it and it's usually up to those companies and the theaters to put the trailers together before the film. Pixar used to be part of Lucasarts, but Lucas didn't want to go the whole CG'd route so they broke off, but they're still good friends with Lucas. So Lucas basically called them up and asked them to put his little teaser at the beginning of the prints for Monsters Inc.
I thought that was kind of interesting, but according to theforce.net the trailer isn't on all prints or some theaters are chopping it off so it's possible some people won't see it in front of Monsters Inc. Just thought some people might find that interesting. -
Re:Star Wars trailer?
According to TheForce.net, some prints of Montsters, Inc. were apparently shipped without the Episode II trailer attached. Odd, because the trailer was supposed to be attached to each print before it reached theaters.
If you want to see the trailer (reports are correct, it's not too great), call your local theater fisrt and make sure they are showing it. -
Original ArticleThis news was first broken in an article at theforce.net on information from someone who was at Pixar's cast screening of Monster's, Inc., where Jobs announced that the trailer would be showing with the film and was included with the copy they watched at the screening. The article even has a link to an MP3 file of Jobs making the announcement. At first, this was disputed by people citing internet trailer listings, but has now been confirmed by today's official Lucasfilm announcement.
Working for Pixar and seeing the trailer first... how luckey can you get!

Re:What about November 9th?
According to the rumors on theforce.net, there will be two teaser trailers and the Harry Potter trailer this month. The first teaser, "Breathing" is attached to Monsters, Inc. The second is supposed to be released on November 9, and trailer "A" is November 16. Trailer B will supposedly show up in March.

I've followed the ways of Yoda since...I was a kid. I've been trying to set aside anger, fear, agression, and focus on where I am, what I am doing.

Re:do you think...I doubt he'd have much freedom to make a trilogy set after the original one. The books are way ahead of him. Although Lucasfilm does own the copyright on all of them. The newest ones are even set far enough after the original trilogy that he could use the original actors. Might be a bit of a jump for the fans who've only seen the movies, though.
Whatever he does, I hope he at least quits being cutesy long enough to wipe out those damned teddy-bears.

Re:Please oh please let it have the Phantom Edit!
it's basically a fan's cut of the film
Ahh, but you neglect to mention that that "fan" is rumored to be none other than Kevin Smith (though now when I look at that page, a month later, it says that he denies it. Still...).
EditorsNet.com has an interesting new story today with some interesting links. It was found by Brian G. and certainly sounds interesting:
A mysterious video cassette containing a re-edited version of George Lucas' "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" has started circulating around Hollywood. Called "Star Wars Episode I.I: The Phantom Edit," the "special corrector's edition" challenges the vision of the original film. According to posts on an online Phantom Edit discussion forum, "The Phantom Edit" represents a better version of the story than the version that was released in May 1999, which has inspired strong negative feelings in many dyed-in-the-wool Star Wars fans -- including one dissatisfied fan who created a forum on the Internet called "Jar Jar Sucks So Hard I Can't Stand It!" The Razzies nominated "Phantom Menace" for a whopping seven "worst" awards, including worst picture of the year. (The film "won" for worst supporting actor for Ahmed Best, the voice of Jar-Jar Binks.)
The posts on the online discussion board, which hail from the likes of "TrueJedi," "SW lover" and "wisejedi," range significantly in subject matter. Some posts are desperate pleas for ideas on how to get a copy of "The Phantom Edit." Some delineate the differences between the original and the unauthorized re-edit. And some muse on the possible identity of "The Phantom Edit's" mysterious auteur. Many suggest that the new cut is the handiwork of filmmaker Kevin Smith ("Clerks," "Dogma").
Update wild_karrde chimes in:
Don't know if you guys heard this yet or not, but newsaskew.com contacted Kevin Smith about "The Phantom Edit", and while he said he had nothing to do with it, he confirms that it DOES exist and he has seen it.
The above being a quote of the article from TheForce.net.

Re:Portman's Coustume
Here's a picture of Cassiopa and Sheba (from Battlestar Galactica)
Here's a picture of Athena (from Battlestar Galactica)
Here's a picture of colonel Wilma Deering (from Buck Rogers)
Compare the Buck Rogers one with this photo of Natalie (on the right) and this one from above.
The similarities have not been lost on a lot of people;
http://www.chud.com/board/ubbhtml/Forum1/HTML/0015 45.html
IMHO - Natalie still seems much like a girl, compared to the others above that seem like women. Maybe it's because I grew up with them ;-))
Also it seems Battlestar Galactica is making a comeback;

Heresy, but Natalie Portman is too thin
It may be troll heresy to admit, but I think Nat's a little too thin.
I prefer woman with a few more curves, maybe Tiffany Amber-Theissen, or even Rene Zellweger (as Bridget Jones). -
Lords of the SithOne master, one apprentice, no less.
I was just about to submit this as a news article, but since my submissions never get accepted anyway...
Fanfilms.com has several very good amateur short films set in the starwars universe. The one that really caught my eye though is the six and a half minute long film Duality about the final test of a new apprentice Lord of the Sith. The film makers put up some very good information about amateur film-making at their site, including modelling hints, costuming, storyboards, and script notes.
I'm really impressed with the quality of this amateur film; and if there are any more out there like this, I'd like to see them.

Re:Spoilers...
My understanding is that it's Obi-Wan who fights Jango, in a rain scene. The fight that I haven't heard anything about is the Mace Windu one.......curious that.

Wanna see TROOPS?
Check it out online at TheForce.net here. Basically, it is a parody of stormtroopers on the job, done in the style of COPS (the TV show).
Some day I hope to have a .plan. -

Somebody is posting wrong information...
I have been informed by a co-worker that this story is not entirely true...
While the actor is no longer doing the part of R2, it will not be CGI. Here's the story that started it all.Evidently someone saw this and extrapolated that the droid would be inserted digitally. But they are absolutely, definitely 100% positively using an R/C version for the film: There's also another shot of a crewman with a radio, controlling R2, but I can't find the picture right now.
-
It won't all be CGIIt can't be--they've already filmed lots of shots with a real model. Check out the pictures.
Since that's the case, perhaps the only real CGI rendering will be when his head is sticking out of a CGI rendered ship. Or during explosions. Or...who knows? It's not uncommon to replace real models with CGI for stunts. Hell, they did that with the humans in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

The working title?
theforce.net is currently dispelling the rumor. Apparently, they actually talked to Lucasfilm.
From their web site:
We just got off the phone with Jeanne Cole from Lucasfilm. As many of you know, many places are reporting that the title to Episode II is "Rise of the Empire". All of this originated from a report from an Australian newspaper that credited "inside sources".
When we talked to Jeanne, she had actually just become aware of the report. She says they are calling it what everyone else is calling it - Episode II. She said, "At this point it is still Star Wars - Episode II."

Re:DVD?
Actually no, he didn't. According to this article on TheForce.net, Lucas is working on the DVD. The reperesentative from Lucasfilm Limited said yes, Lucas is working on a DVD, it's too early to say when it's going to be out or what will be on it, and that there will be NO Episode I Special Edition with the deleted scenes (however they may be included in the DVD, but it's too early to say).
No, I don't work for TheForce.net, but they're the most reliable and up to date site when it comes to Star Wars news that I have found. -

For news and rumors, see TheForce.net. Discussion boards are available at JediCouncil.net. Both are free

Re:DVD?
Actually, from what I heard (from TheForce.net Lucas is, in fact, planning on releasing Ep 1 on DVD, and he's supposedly still refining it. I wouldn't be surprised if he held off on final release until after Eps 2 and 3 are out. But your info is correct, Lucas is doing Ep1 on DVD.

Hard CaseObviously, it would be best to protect all this expensive equipment. Just put it inside a hardened plastic case which the soldier can wear.
Seriously, they have some implementation problems.
- They chose Windows CE, which the manufacturer has abandoned or renamed.
- They used the Iridium satellite network, which the vendor has abandoned.

Not for real?
According to The Force.net article dated Mon, Apr 17, 00 04:18:47 AM EDT ***
Ronald Epstein, who runs the 'home theater forum' of the Digital Bits, confirmed that there won't be an Episode 1 DVD release this year (The editor of The Digital Bits, Bill Hunt, seems to have some undisclosed inside information about the upcoming Star Wars DVDs). According to Epstein, "There are specific reasons why a DVD release is still quite a ways off, though the intent has been announced". However, the final result will be worth the wait: "You will be absolutetly floored!".

Re:Er, okay.
Was it released on Laserdisc? I've got VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. I saw this thing rumored yesterday and canceled my order for the VHS Widescreen edition, but I'll buy a Laserdisc version. This is where the DVD story first broke, as far as I can tell. There's also some info about a radio interview with Lucas, where he supposedly said this himself. Anyone have a link to where I can get the Laserdisc?

Re:hopefully it won't get _too_ much coverage
Troops is hilarious. I think it's one of the best made parodies of Star Wars.
Here's the URL: http://www.theforce.net/troops/
I'm rather curious to see what parodies result from the movie Ender's Game.

Re:While we're killing furry creatures...
You didn't read the link, did you? Here it is again.
a) The Death Star was not in low orbit.
2000 km is a pretty low orbit for something as massive as the Death Star.
b) There's no particular reason to think that the explosion released a significant amount of radiation.
What's your hypothesis for the Death Star's powerplant?
c) On a sheer mass scale, the Death Star wasn't nearly big enough to cover Endor in ash even if it had blown inside the atmosphere. It massed maybe half what the first one did, if it was lucky. Besides which, the thing broke into small enough pieces that it would have all burned up on entry into the atmosphere.
What do you mean it massed half what the first one did? It's twice the size, whatever that means, and has a diameter of 800-960 km.
So, it burns up into pieces upon rentry? Where do the dust sized pieces of the Death Star go? If the Ewoks are lucky, they precipitate straight down, otherwise they suffer a severe overcast sky for a decade. Unless those pieces of dust "burn" all the way into energy, hmm, e=mc^2, you figure out the joules released into the atmosphere.
Follow the link and get back to me.

Re:While we're killing furry creatures...
Y not off the Ewoks too?
You think they survived having the Death Star blown up over the planet while it was in low orbit? They're toast, and Endor is a desolate, ash covered radioactive hell hole, or at least it should be.
Unless, just maybe, it was a Potemkin Death Star, built to lure Skywalker, built out of tin foil and sticks. Yeah, we can rationalize that.

Any news on bit parts?Anyone know
.... er ..... imagine stuff about some of the more peripheral characters? Bail Organa gonna be in there? Mon Mothma? Admiral Ackbar? Tatooine == More Jabba?!?! They might be the sort of thing that keeps the next one from being too much of a formula.FWIW, theforce.net said that `In the script we stole^H^H^H^H^Hacquired in September, Bail Organa of Aldeeran was also running for Supreme Chancellor. But that was changed to Bail Antilles of Aldeeran. Perhaps Lucas sees a larger role for Organa in Episode 2?" Haven't heard anything about anybody else new or returning
