I would have to see the uniforms before passing judgment.
...I'd agree with that sentiment. After all, Del Taco employees get swanky t-shirts with almost suggestive phrases. Are they planning on buying the uniforms from Think Geek?

Solution
There is a solution, join together and buy these T-shirts:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/unisex/itdepartment/388b/
go into work and then indicate you were happy with the uniform idea.
There will probably be multiple reasons for not being asked to wear a uniform the next day.

Good Idea
Since the IT folks are often the most powerful employees of any company (in terms of how quickly a few people could essentially shut down an entire organization), I would support an idea like this. Of course, I would want something simple like (like this).
In large organizations, anyone with elevated, potentially damaging powers should be distinguishable on sight. The CIO should have to wear a gorilla suit just so it's fair. -

If that does'nt work then just let the edict wash over you. In a few weeks he will have forgotten about this and moved on to something else. If you make a big fuss over this then he will dig his heels and and police it more fervently.
I've found this more times than I can count over the years. Pick your battles. Decide which ones he is serious about, and which ones he is just flapping his jaw about because he's bored. Alternatively, you and your team are certainly smart enough to seek out the individual responsible for bitching (providing that was the catalyst) that they weren't allowed to have headphones. There are at least a few subtle possibilities.

Roller Coaster kit
As a kid, I received a kit that had pieces to build marble roller coasters as a Christmas gift. It was great for learning basic physics principles, and I was able to make my own designs and figure out why they did or didn't work. Mine was a Spacewarp kit (which are apparently still available at ThinkGeek), but a Google search shows that some other kits are Skyrail and Rollerscape.

Thank you for pointing that device out. Not only does it play audio and video, but it also functions as an ebook reader, apparently with text2speech. (I can take Project Gutenburg with me.) It looks like it isn't locked down, so you can write your own games for the device too. (Maybe it'll encourage me to finally work at it.)
It runs C/OS-II, never tried it, but probably isn't any worse than Linux. In fact, it appears to be certified for medical / critical use, so it is probably really stable, and they seem to like hobbyists too.

Re:It can't even talk http properly
Oh geez. He's returning Error 404 when a script crashes? That means he can't be bothered to find the list of HTTP status codes, because if he did he'd see that 404 is clearly the wrong choice. It also means he can't be bothered to look at other implementations, because then he'd have noticed that popular servers such as Apache and IIS return Error 500 when scripts are broken.
From this we can conclude that he probably hasn't read the HTTP protocol specification (because it'd be hard to read the spec but miss the list of status codes), and he has no idea how current servers work (so instead of copying their good ideas, he'll be reinventing his own broken wheels).
And from THAT we can conclude that his browser is a steaming pile of crap. The reason it's not open source is probably because he's afraid that somebody would read his code and make fun of him for it.
Heh, check out the actual 404 error message - it's malformed HTML 2.0! If you're going to go to the trouble of including a DOCTYPE declaration, you ought to at least validate the code.

Think Geek should be next in line to be sued...
Hey look, Think Geek (a sister company to Slashdot) is doing exactly the same with this product. The video for that item demonstrates piracy in action.
And if you think that it's okay because of the "nudge, nudge, wink" attitude - consider how incredibly hypocritical that is when there's a copyright notice at the bottom of every GeekNet page (including this one.) Clearly they think that copyright laws apply to other people, but not themselves.

Re:Trebuchet vs. Howitzer
While howitzers are great for taking out recyclers and factories from a great distance, I still prefer the trebuchet for the shorter range engagements that office warfare requires. There are few weapons better at delivering indirect fire into the PHB's office. However for a proper combined arms approach, you might also need something like helicopters and tanks.

Re:Chrome OS is an answer to a question...
I think everyone is looking ahead to a point when the desktop and the mobile will merge. As much as smartphones are like trying to read a Reader's Digest condensed version of a novel, but even I find myself using my crappy one more than my desktop. Obviously it's too painful to use for a full-time wordprocessor, but I look at my kids use their's, and I get the feeling it isn't so much an issue of utility as a generational issue.
I don't think it's a generational issue, unless the next generation is going to lose the ability to read and write.
Most kids type very quickly on their cell phones because they're not typing full sentences -- or even full words, in a lot of cases. Anyting you put in your pocket isn't going to be great for text input until one of two things happen:
1) Voice recognition gets to the point where one can dictate flawlessly and have it understood.
2) Projection keyboards like this get cheaper.
Mostly, though, Chrome OS is a clunker because people don't want all their apps to be Web apps on a computer bigger than a cell phone. Yes, something like Google OS could pass okay on a cell phone, because people expect things that light to be on cell phones. But on a laptop? Not so much. A user would be better off with a lightweight Linux version than with Chrome OS, simply because it would be so much more powerful.
Maybe by 2015, when Google expects Chrome OS to be out, Web apps will be a little more serious. But they should've released it closer to then, in that case. Right now, Chrome OS just turns laptops into mobile dumb terminals. -

Hardware Solution
"The ideal tool in my mind should be something that is independent of any application, browser, or computer; something that is easily carried, but which if lost poses no risk of compromise. What does the Slashdot crowd like in password tools?"
It sounds like you're describing this: Mandylion Password Manager. ThinkGeek's out of stock at the moment, but you can probably find one elsewhere.
Less convenient than some options since you can't copy & paste. On the other hand, more secure since the list of passwords never gets to the PC's RAM.

In defense of the Mac Mini
The Mac Mini's power supply maxes out at 85W but it uses much, much less than that. I just used my Kill-A-Watt to verify that my 1.25 GHz G4 uses less than 20W when logged in and looking at localhost in Safari. The Intels are comparable.
I have an original Mini that has been serving apache (with php and mysql), ssh, afp, and other things 24/7/365 since a month after it was released--coming up on 4 years now--with OS X. AFAIK they take Linux just fine and that shouldn't make much (if any) difference in the power usage. Original G4s can be had for ~$200 used, used Intels are around $400, and of course new ones start at $600.

Re:parse error at "generous amounts of aid"
The same could be said of dropping someone naked in the Artic tundra. They're self-sufficient till they freeze to death (and hence no longer survive).
LOLWUT? Self-contradict much? The very definition he posted, and that you'll find in most dictionaries, includes that nagging little conditional "survival," or in other words, NOT death. Argument fail.
I don't think it's a good idea to take this plan only from the point of view of the island. The thing that bothers me here is that there's absolutely no mention of cost in most of these stories. The best I've found is an estimate of 11,000 euro [milkproduction.com] per person which allegedly includes some amount of local investment.
Of course there is cost. No one said this stuff could get done for free or dirt-cheap. That's what pilot programs are all about, seeing if the initial investment is worth it. I really hate having to repeat arguments already made, but allow me to explain yet again: as net-positive energy infrastructure becomes common to meet increasing demand, the setup costs go down as the techniques are refined and companies find less costly materials and manufacturing techniques to achieve the same results. Just look at what's happening in the newly emerging consumer space-flight market. Also, you fail to acknowledge the fact that if they are now able to produce more energy than they consume, they can sell back the excess they don't use to the grid.
The link mentions a farmer, Jørgen Tranberg who happens to own 2.5 million euros in two windmills (one on his property, one offshore), has another 4 windmills (probably another 5 million euros value and generating rent) sitting on his 150 acre farm, and who speaks glowingly of the whole plan. My view is that if I picked up a few million euros on this sort of thing, I might speak well of it too, purely for selfish reasons.
Yeah, because the only thing that motivates people is pure selfish greed, and couldn't possibly be that, although he is benefiting, it's good for everyone... Nice to know you think so highly of people. Benefit to him: makes money from selling back excess power. Benefit to government: proof that self-sustainability can be achieved, at least on a small scale, reason to invest similarly in other regions. Benefit to Samsø/region: less power draw from grid to power that island. Benefit to nation: long-term reduction of coal burned for power. Also, quick question of little importance: where'd that link to milkproduction.com come from? I see no such link in the
/. article, nor in your top level comment, or in any subsequent replies to you...That massive investment in windmills (much of the power being exported to the mainland) indicates to me that we probably have a large wind power subsidy distorting this economic picture further.
Alan Shore says, "Objection, your honor: Speculation." Proof plz? And just for the record, you do know that a subsidy is, right? Denmark is not exactly known for corruption problems, so I doubt they'd claim something like self-sustainability (including monetary) which could be disproved by checking the local government financial records.
All I can say, given that there's at least two large subsidies going on here (and I suspect they are massive enough to turn dairy farmers into multimillionaires)
I didn't know you had one of these.
..., is that we can, when we throw enough money at the problem, turn a small region into a carbon negative region. I suppose you could run numbers, but the experiment has at least two big subsidies throwing it.
