Re:Good news!
People have to specifically give permission for their organs to be used. Also I think there are problems with the recipients body rejecting the cells, so they need specific types of donors. Fairly powerful treatments are needed to prevent the body rejecting the cells, which bring their own unplesant side-effects.
I can't give blood, as the effects of giving non-diabetic people blood with artificial insulin are not certain. I assume this means that my organs would not be welcome either. There are a number of other medications which prevent you from being a donor.
I expect this rules out a large proportion of potential donors. -
Re:WoW!
Still, generally Richard Branson does come up with some neat ways to keep his name on the map, so it'd be interesting how this does, and how many others will follow suit.
Virgin Radio was sold off from the Virgin Group back in 1997 I believe. Nothing to do with Branson, except the name.

Actually, happens often in Florida... if the temperature is hot enough, you don't see the mist...

Re:Gah!
Well, I've been wanting a smart Roadster in the US for about 2 years now. Where the hell is it?? Yes, I know, it's only one car, and Europe does tend to get the shaft on the tech side rather consistently. But I really think it's just that (a) it's not made in Europe and (b) the European market for this, and other, technological toys is rated small, whether it deserves it or not.

Prior Art coming out the ying yang
When I was much much younger, I used to purchase a magazine - Micro User for my BBC Micro. For about 10+ years, this published code listings ever month. You typed in 500ish lines of code, and were rewarded with a game or a useful little utility.
It was very frustrating to enter all of the code and not have the program run. Therefore, they introduced a checksum program. This ran on the code and gave you a string of digits back, which you could compare with the digits issued in the magazine. This was active from 1984 onwards, and most likely even before that.
Prior art?

Re:OT: Annoying Links / DefinitionsI'd agree with you there, I'm guilty of linking words with only an internal description of where they're going and the whole thing falls apart when the link destination is weak.
Personally, my favourite format for linking descriptions of words, which I see slowly gaining pace, is just hrefing the last letter, like so: anaptotic.
I'd really appreciate opinions on how right/wrong/established/crazy that is...

Re:Is it worth it?
Controlled experiments date back to 580 BC as indicated here:
The first theoretical mathematician is held to be Thales of Miletus (c. 580 BC) who is believed to have proposed the first theorems in plane geometry. His disciple Pythagoras established geometry as a recognized science among the Greeks. Pythagoras began to insist that mathematical statements must be proved using a logical chain of reasoning starting from acceptable assumptions. Undoubtedly the impetus for this demand for logical proof came from the discovery by this group of the surprising fact that the square root of 2 is a number which cannot be expressed as the ratio of two whole numbers. The use of logical reasoning, the methods of which were summarized by Aristotle, enabled Greek mathematicians to make general statements instead of merely solving individual problems as earlier mathematicians had done.
Also, according to Wikipedia the definition of science says:
Science is both a process of gaining knowledge, and the organized body of knowledge gained by this process. The scientific process is the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about a system. This systematic acquisition is generally the scientific method, and the system is generally nature
One could argue, based on the current definition of science, that scientists existed as far back as 580 BC. -
Re:Too Bad for the sonic Boom.
Right now having an airplain that can go at Mach 10 is somewhat useless because we can already out fly our enemies planes which most were build during the cold war times.
First, we sill can not outfly some of the enemy's missiles and have to outmaneuver and/or outsmart them. Second, the faster we can go the farther we can fly on time. For example, the planes can be based on the comfortable island but still be able to timely reach some of the theaters, where expensive and uncomfortable carriers have to be used now.
Lastly, using the technology for our missiles would be great too -- for example, once information comes in where a thug can be hit, this missile can reach his bunker in 20-30 minutes, rather than 2 hours. Not to mention the potential of replacing the "old-and-boring" ICBMs.

The gripping hand......is that the Smart city cars (as opposed to the impossible-to-hate roadster) are just not good cars for the money.
There's unquestionably room in the market, especially in highly urbanised countries where fuel is expensive, for tiny funky city cars like these. I'd buy one. But the Smarts, despite being a Mercedes co-production (which would lead you to think it'd be nice but have lousy quality control...), are just lousy to drive and too expensive, according to all reports. The reviews (Review 1, Review 2) have been so lousy that I ruled out even ever test driving one; if the things cost $AU5000 then that'd be another matter, but they're really quite expensive here, and the US pricing would seem to be similarly inflated, compared with the lower pricing of regular cars in the States.
Here in Sydney, Australia, I see a Smart tooling around every now and then, but every single one I've seen has been a corporate promotional vehicle, not a private car. There's no reason at all for a private citizen to buy one of these expensive, annoying little things, when perfectly good four-seat Japanese subcompacts are available for the same money. Korean ones cost rather less.

Re:"Google" is singular not plural, get it rightMore information:
collective noun
A collective noun, or group noun, is a noun which designates a group of people or animals. Crew, committee, gang, government, audience, family, and herd are all collective nouns. When such a group is considered as a single unit, its collective noun is used with a singular verb and singular pronouns: The committee has reached its decision. But when the focus is on the individual members of the group, British English tends to use a plural verb and plural pronouns with its collective nouns: The committee have been arguing all morning over what they should do. American English usually uses a singular verb and pronouns in these circumstances.
A determiner in front of a singular collective noun is always singular: this committee, never these committee (but of course when the collective noun is pluralized, it takes a plural determiner: these committees).

Re:Why the NYT thinks this is noteworthy...
I had one guy comment to me here on
/. that there was an Audi which you couldn't open the hood to change the fluids! A little flip panel was the only access for this. That'll be the A2. Not really the first car you'd think of if you're hotrodding. It's a mini-MPV with an astounding level of fuel economy (in part due to the aluminium construction). Boosting the performance at the expense of fuel economy seems like an exercise in missing the point of the model...
Incidentally, a friend of mine has one, and the EMU once went into safe mode and wouldn't let him go above 50 MpH or so.

Too bad
A company like Blizzard, with the hype machine they can generate and their long list of popular products, does not need the slashdot marketing that the many MANY other mmporg games that are already in open beta could sorely use. What about Freeworld, Biosfear, or even quirky titles like Socioltron (just to name a few)?
Anyone whos interested in MMPORG games is already well aware of the WoW beta, and anyone who ISN'T shouldn't be competing for those rare few beta slots in WoW. -

Incorrect. See here, or look higher up on this post's hierarchy.
Oh, and moderators: Stop wasting your mod points on OT'ing these subjunctive posts of mine (and others); it sends the wrong message to these people who don't know English. So if YOU'RE not going to keep them in line, I will. This, after all, is more important than my personal karma. -

Re:I hate to "me too"You might want to check out more details on urpmi and the associated commandline tools:
-
good - Mandrake needs some publicity
I've been using Mandrake for a while, and I would hate to see this company go - they have many great tools, and they put every single line of code they wrote under the gpl (unlike YAST for instance, even though I love SuSe too). They probably need as much PR as they can get, and this was a good idea.
Its time for some features, like their excellent urpm* tools to get more attention (I wonder why it received such scare coverage, for it is the only package management tool that is on par with apt-get among rpm-based distributions - maybe with the exception of apt-rpm). Another great tool, excellent in large deployments is draksync.

Re:F?
Find your grade school teachers and shoot them. He says it's the most beautiful, but probably not the most practical. Or, even though it's not the most practical, it's the most beautiful. Etc...
Is English a second language for you? Perhaps it is a US idiom, but the construct "if not the most" is pretty commonly used to mean that the object is *possibly* a superlative, but if it is not, it is pretty close, eg (with thanks to google):
Duck and goose hunting has to be one if not the most expensive sport.
That last link goes into the subject at some length. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
To be fair, the poster's original comment is unclear because they do not include the "one of the..." construct in their sentence. So it is possible they said what you think they said, only badly, or what others thought they said. Perhaps the original poster should clarify his/her statement.

First ISP?
The Lemon lists in 1990:
First ISP created. Business is slow due to the fact that the Internet has no purpose, nobody knows about it, and more people own Betamax machines than computers.
Hobbe's lists:
1990:
The World comes on-line (world.std.com), becoming the first commercial provider of Internet dial-up access
UUnet started in 1987 and Netcom started in 1998.
The Internet wasn't offically cleared for commercial use until 1990 and I believe Software Tool & Die did some of the pushing and received some of the backlash for commercializing the Internet. But both UUNet and Netcom were around first weren't they? When ARPAnet officially became the commercial "Internet", I believe UUNet changed their name to "Alternet." Netcom kept the same name.
As I recall I got my first Netcom shell account in 1990. I used e-mail, usenet, fsp, and ftp (and archie). Around 1991 or 1992 I think I started using irc. I recall using dipd(?) and later slirp(I think this link is to the same program, just a newer version) to turn my shell account into a slip/ppp account, but I didn't really start doing that until the Web came out as there wasn't much point prior.
Netcom was bought out by ICG, then Mindspring bought it from ICG, then Earthlink bought out Mindspring.
I lost Netcom my shell account around 1994, but some people still have their original 1988 @netcom.com e-mail address still maintained by Earthlink.

Tiscali TOS..My IP is Tiscali.. a fairly large european provider that has recently been in the techpress for having a few bad DOS attacks.
Anyways, the TOS is here. Not the worst I've seen: The usual Two-hour cutoff.. The daft combination of the 'we reserve the right to release your information to third parties' clause together with the 'you must not use this service for the distribution of unsolicited material to third parties' clause..
Look at section 7, 'Intellectual Property Rights'. No claims to any of your stuff.
They do have a few annoying things, like the clause that states they may terminate access if you use their service "in a way that does not comply with any written or electronic instructions sent by us to you or posted on the Portal by us from time to time".
So I have to keep checking the TOS "from time to time".. (yeah, right..)In fact the only thing remotely scary is that they still have a clause that says:
"We may need to amend the Privacy Policy from time to time. Any such amendment will take effect as soon as it is posted on the Tiscali Portal. You are therefore encouraged to familiarise yourself with the Privacy Policy on a regular basis. The Privacy Policy will always be easily accessible online throughout Tiscali Portal."So shop around. I don't suggest Tiscali are the best IP (heaven forbid!!), but they are decent enough for my needs.
They don't chase up after you or infringe on rights etc.. but their tech support leaves a bit to be desired sometimes: They tend to not give out too much info on any problems like the recent DOS attacks (if you are interested look about, Usenet and the Register both have stuff on them), I've also noticed them editing several historical entries on their service status page to make it look like it has always been plain sailing..(Aw well, can't have everything..)
:) -
Re:Hardware
Well, it looks like a DAS4020 board has 12-bit resolution and so does the BBC Micro (although it might be only 10 bits in practice). The difference comes in sample rates: 20MHz versus 100Hz! So people are not going to be recording any UHF broadcasts through the analogue port. Unless they manage some serious overclocking.

Bill Gates eludes custard pie man!!.

More on the first Attack can be found here.

Re:Dum-de-dum
uhuh. Well, I wonder what kind of cable you have. 'round here they typically are 512/128 kbit, and from what I've understood that's the case in the rest of the world too.
FYI, T1 is according to Tiscali 1,544 mbit/s, so the T1 comparison appears to be valid. -
World's first? Like hell...Founded in 1989, The World was the first dial-up Internet service provider in the world, Shein said.
BS. Propaganda. I got a Netcom account in 1988 (after being dissatisfied with portal.com, who were even earlier, but who sucked)
See Netcom in computing dictionary
And it wouldn't even help to say "oldest surviving" or some such. Netcom the corporation was acquired by Earthlink, but it didn't go away...I still have my original 1988 email address!
Some people might try to quibble by saying that initially Netcom only offered shell accounts with Internet access, so it didn't count, but I say that is wrong...many of us used the commercial TIA or the freeware "dipd" to forward TCP/IP from our home systems to the dialed-up shell. But even neglecting this, we were able to ftp, telnet, ping, etc any site on the net...I say that counts!
In the early days Netcom had only one server, and the founder, Bob Reiger, was initially the only sys admin...so if the system lost internet access in the wee hours of the morning, we would call the poor guy at home, wake him up and beg him to go fix it.
His wife insisted that he hire a night watch sys admin pretty early on.

Taking Over Microdot Duties2002 December 6
Dear Sirs and Madams:
My friend Purple / Red / Blue / Green / Cyan / Violet / Orange / Black / Crimson Microdot has just informed me that he has recently been IP banned from Kuro5hin. Consequently, the onus has temporarily fallen to me of carrying out the sacred duties of the Microdot until he can resolve the situation and resume operations as before.
I know that I have big shoes to fill, and I won't claim that I'll be able to live up to the accomplishments of my predecessor. I won't even claim that I'm qualified for the job, however, I know that Kuro5hin needs a Microdot, and I will do anything within my power to adequately fill in for the true Microdot while he is indisposed.
The true Microdot wishes me to convey his sincere regrets to all of you over being temporarily forcibly separated from you. This is a situation that was beyond his control, and he is doing what he can to find a workaround. Until then, I'll do my part to try to fill the void, because Kuro5hin without the Microdot is just not Kuro5hin. (We won't even mention a certain Yellow imposter, who is an embarrassment to the Microdot name and to himself.)
I can never be the original Microdot, but I'm going to try my best to get into the Microdot mindset, and find my own personal style as well. If you like me, then perhaps when the real Microdot overcomes his IP-ban, I'll continue to work side-by-side with him. If you don't like me, then e-mail some certain people and request/demand that the original Microdot have his IP-ban removed as soon as possible.
This is all that I have to say at the moment. Until the services of the Standing Junior Microdot are needed again, I wish you all good night... and Godspeed.
Warmest Possible Regards,
Teal Microdot -

If you don't like me, then e-mail some certain people and request/demand that the original Microdot have his IP-ban removed as soon as possible.
This is all that I have to say at the moment. Until the services of the Standing Junior Microdot are needed again, I wish you all good night... and Godspeed.
Warmest Possible Regards,
