Re:Jabber does this
The point is that the holy grail is just that: an AIM user sending a Yahoo user a message without having to get a Yahoo account.
As long as IM accounts remain free and easy to obtain, and multi-protocol clients continue to exist, the grail is somewhat less than holy. Yes, it'd be nice to use my AIM account to talk to a friend on Yahoo or MSN. Until then, I just have one of each and use Trillian. -
That's cool, but it doesn't affect me
I was a trillian user for two years and have now been a Gaim user for a year. The only thing that would change for me is the number of sockets that my computer would maintain.
I wonder if this movement would also spark a movement toward disabling 3rd-party clients. That would NOT be good.

Trillian has release a Patch
Trillian has now released a patch, 2.013 for pro. I just installed in and I can connect to Yahoo, but since I don't actually actively use yahoo as any sort of communication medium I don't care...
http://www.trillian.cc/news_press/
There is also a patch for the free version. -
Trillian v0.74I is OUT now!
here for Basic right now.

Trillian Patches Available
The Trillian guys have fixed it. You can grab the patches(Trillian Pro 2.013 & Trillian Basic Patch I) from the Trillian download page.

Re:Dumb idea...
That's a tad unnecessary. Jabber is an open, extensible protocol which is relatively easy to handle. The standard exists to dissuade anyone from developing yet another IM protocol. From what I've read, the ideal is that Jabber proxies will be set up to translate AIMJabber, ICQJabber, and so on, so that Jabber only users can talk to everyone, and everyone can talk to Jabber users. Gaim, Trillian, and many other clients, on many platforms already support Jabber. I seriously thought everyone on Slashdot knew this sort of stuff.

MSN Messenger
The reviewer complains about not having MSN Messenger-lookalikes: kopete works fine for me, as did gaim last time I checked; and if he wants something to run on crossover, he can try trillian which is supported. I know windows users who switched from the official MSN client to trillian because MSN was too intrusive.

How about trillian?

Great idea for a thread
This is a great idea for a thread. I'm assuming this is after I've downloaded the eight jillion patches for Windows I need, but in no particular order:
- A virus scanner (This definitely comes first!)
- WinRAR (I should look into 7-Zip, though.)
- Firefox (and a few choice extensions)
- Thunderbird (I love sharing one mailbox between two operating systems.)
- Filezilla
- Trillian
- iTunes
- Various programs for web development
- OpenOffice.org
- Real Alternative (Screw you, Real! I don't need to take your crap any more!)
-
My 10 downloads
1. Trillian Pro - I use AIM, Y!, ICQ, IRC, and MSN chat clients. I use Trillian to notify me of updates to RSS feeds. I also use it to check POP3 e-mail accounts and Y! and HoTMaiL accounts. I also order my buddy list into Groups and Sub-Groups. Trillian also logs all chats which comes in handy on occasions. I also download the Aikon3 skin for Trillian. Trillian support secure profiles in case you have multiple people using the same install of Trillian.
Trillian website
Aikon 3 website w/Trilliain screenshots
2. Firefox - Light-weight, pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing rocks. And the plugins are very useful. All web designers should use the "Web Development" extension for Firefox. It allows you to automatically resize any webpage, disable images, cookies, java, ..., validates, and so much more. Save a lot time for the web devs. The "EditCSS" extension is cool because you can run your own CSS on other people's websites (make Slashdot fit your blog theme). Oh, and the Mozilla Google Toolbar for Firefox is a "must install". (I also install the Google bar for IE).

3. Microsoft Powertoys for XP (TweakUI) - A Microsoft download that allows for extra and powerful control of XP. Basically, it allows you to make some neat changes to your Registry that allows for increased productivity and usability. Tweaking XP made easy.
Microsoft Powertoys website
4. Versaverter - a neat little units converter that came in very helpful during my Engineering education. It has virtually every unit imaginable.
Versaverter website
5. Winamp5 - Light-weight MP3 player. Also play other media formats both audio and video. Skinnable, scalable, dockable, and extendable. I use only this program to playback MP3's. I like docking my Winamp screen at the bottom of my monitor. It's only about 20 pixels high. I also like right-clicking an MP3 folder and selecting Play in Winamp.
Winamp website
6. BS Player - Light-weight Video player. Playback video in half-time, double-time, resizable video screen, skinnable, commandline support, and more. My favorite video media player as I haven't found a player that gives me more control of the video I am watching.
BS Player website
7. Colorpad - tiny little .exe and GUI eyedropper utility. Use the eyedropper to get the HEX or HTML value of any pixel on screen. I don't think there's any current support for this app. Still, it's very handy and takes up little screen area with the right skin.
Colorpad @ Deviant Art
8. Winzip - compress and decompress files. Duh.
Winzip website
9. TravelAxe - Find cheap hotels from around the world. Puts information from popular travel websites into a sortable spreadsheet. Sorts by price, 1,2,3,4,5 Star rating, and more.
TravelAxe website
10. Musicmatch Jukebox - The only reason I install this software is to convert my audio CDs into MP3 archives. That part of this software is powerful and flexible. Don't use it for anything else.

Re:Hmmm...
You can trim two items off your list by using Trillian.
-
I actually have a list
Considering the frequency with which I reinstall, here's my list for Windows (post-driver updates):
Mozilla Firefox - a must. even if it's not a necessity straight off as a browser, popup blocking makes it worth having immediately.
Trillian - what friends don't enjoy the logging on and off every 2 minutes as you have to reboot your comp for new settings to take place
SmartFTP - as a web developer this is a must, can't pretend to work without an FTP client.
Winamp (5) - I use it for everything media now. I'm an addict.
WinRAR - I know it's shareware but I still like it's ease of use and modifications to the Windows context menus.
Nero - my burning software of choice
ConTEXT - my editor of choice; see SmartFTP
Google Toolbar - unfortunately, I end up doing a lot of testing in IE and without this, I might as well kiss my peaceful browsing goodbye.
Spybot Search & Destroy - not so much of a necessity immediately, but the immunization qualities are great to set up from the get-go
Ad Aware - see Spybot -
Re:Wish AIM were next
What about Trillian? I've been using it for a while now without any problems.
-
Re:Wish AIM were next
But there IS something better than AOL's version
-
Re:So...
Or you could use Trillian.
-
Re:RSS + JabberD Better idea
Syndication over IM is far more interesting.
We're getting there. Trillian has an RSS reader plugin. Admittedly, it's not as easy as right clicking on an article and sending it to a contact (or many contacts), you have to right click select copy, then right click and paste...but considering you can't mass message people on your contact list yet in any IM that I know of, this comes as no surprise.

MSN messenger?
Does anyone know if it is slamming the msn messenger service as well? I havn't been able to connect to it recently, and it seems to be a network wide outage, since other people are having problems as well....
-
Gopher, eh?
Is that an IM protocol/system/whatever?
IM systems die fast if people stop using them, your friends aren't online and you won't be able to make any new ones, just take this example: I haven't got an message over ICQ for about 3 years, and now I got a message saying: "slm nasylsyn", I've got no idea what it is, or who it's from :/ Scary, eh?
Somehow it seems as if MSN is the 'in' IM protocol right now, everyone's using it, and hotmail of course. I don't see why, but I'm using it as well, so I guess you'll have to blame me too. As long as it's 'open' I'll continue using it, I'm using Trillian(probably handles Gopher, otherwise just write a plugin) or Gaim to access it, never a Microsoft product >:) -
Re:Good but...
However, unless the major player in IM implements the protocol, this standard importance is not very high.
Actually, this isn't really true. ICQ/AOL, MSN and Yahoo all have a different protocol but products like Trillian can use Jabber as a generic protocol to layer on top of these proprietary protocols.
Not that I think it will happen, but with Jabber being a standard you'd think these smaller IM players could join together. Or at least link together. -
Re:Less spam
Use Trillian.
-
Re:how was this legal?
Or, you can use something like Trillian, which has transparent encryption built in. Of course, both parties need to be using encryption-aware clients, but it's a bit easier than learning a new language.
-
A solution for Trillian, already
For those of us who use Trillian Pro, there is a plugin that sends a message back with a request for a specific answer.
You can set it to say "Say open sesame to prove you're not a spam bot", and require the response "open sesame", or you set it to say "If you're not a spam bot, tell me what the 4th decimal place of pi is".
It's called "SpamChallenge", and a google search will turn it up quickly. (Because Cerulean Studios do not allow downloading plugins from their site unless you have registered Pro, I don't know if it's kosher to link to this. It's not hard to find, though.)
I haven't had much of a problem with SPIMs, so I haven't needed it, but it is nice to have. -
Trillian
Trillian is still working for me.
I used to get a warning from Micros~1 about needing to patch my IM client due to security concerns, but I clicked the checkbox to deny further messages from them. =) -
Summary of all posts so far, with site links.
I've tried a good deal of the stuff listed. The following are the most intuitive, free, software products I have encountered. They increase productivity, and are stable.
Freeware List: If you can think of it, it's in here.
OpenCD: Precompiled CD with all open source software.
Doom9.org: Famed site for lots of media tools.
Trillian: AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo! IM software all in one.
AVG Anti-Virus: Free AV
SpyBot (Spam Remover): Free Spam Remover/Search & Destroy
Firebird: Web browser w/ adblock & popup control.
FileZilla FTP: FTP Client
Smart FTP: Free Client, better looking, faster
Kerio: Personal Firewall, better than ZoneAlarm
Textpad: Text Editor.
PuTTY: SSH Client.
CygWin: Linux emulation.
FFDshow: DivX/XVid decoder.
TweakUI: Microsoft's famed Powertoy for Windows XP.
WinAce: Fast, high-compression (40% smaller, faster compression than ZIP).
WinAmp: MP3 player, with this skin.
dBpowerAMP: Music Converter (copies CDs to MP3)
One last thing, don't use Outlook. Find a better program: Eudora, Thunderbird, or PegasusMail (in that order) are safer/more powerful. Windows comes bundled with great software, just like Mandrake - but their internet package leaves much (security) to be desired. -
my list
AVG AntiVirus (free for home use)
Mozilla.org: Suite (browser, mail/news); Firebird (browser); Thunderbird (mail/news) [all free]
OpenOffice.org office suite (free)
Kerio Personal Firewall (free for home use)
WinAMP multimedia (free)
Trillian IM client (AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Y!) [free version available]
AdAware privacy protector (free for home use)
AnalogX random ultilities(many freebies)
There doesn't seem to be a huge lack of free products that ship with most Linux distros, and I don't use it as a general OS enough to point to anything specific, hence most of my list (but not all) is Windows only. Sorry.
-bZj -
I feel dirty posting this but Oh Well...
Oh, I'll blow the dust off my Windows notes and blog;- CygWin. The Linux-like environment for Windows.
Mozilla. Use this for mail, news, and browsing if you like.
Firebird. for FAST browsing.
WS FTP Light. A FREE, FTP client that works great.
Filezilla. which is TRULY free and does sftp as well.
PuTTY. a free SSH client for Windows.
TTSSH. is a much less clunky ssh client than PuTTY.
iXplorer. freeware secure FTP client
VNC hello!? remote controll software.
Tight VNClike the original, only FAST.
GNU-EMacs for Windows. just trust me ;).
Dev-C++a free C++ compiler for those who can't afford VS.
NetHack. as someone here said, you MUST have NetHack installed on everything...
Free-AV.free Anti-Virus software for Windows, (mandatory these days). or
AVG Free edition. another free Anti-Virus software for Windows.
Zonealarm. my favorite Personal Firewall,, really!. or
Kerio. another firewall that some seem to like. or
Sygate. yet another firewall. whatever floats your boat.
Boingo. to see where the closest hotspot is, hehe.
OpenOffice 1.1 the Microsoft Office KILLER :) {really!}
Winamp 2.x for audio/video usage in Windows, stay away from the new one :).
Mark's Adding Machine is much better than the Windows calculator.
SpyBot Search & Destroy The best Ad-ware / Spyware removal tool we've found, "IE is unusable without".
Ad-Aware another spy-ware app "alas poor Windoze."
Trillian a favorite IM, since we're all chatters @ heart. or
GAIM since trillian hogs resources, "bad piggy!".
Gimp image creation/editing. Who needs Photoshop anyway?
EnZip freeware Zip Utility, Stop nagging you WinZip!!
Iview is a great little image viewer. or
Irfanviewone of the best image viewer out there for Windows.
Audacity is a great little sound editor.
Virtual Dub. a great video editor.
cDex gotta rip those cd's for the RIAA!
MAME for games, period. Free. You can buy some ROMs, or *ahem* ask around. and finally
XPantiSPY since XP is E-V-I-L.
And FINALLY, don't trust me! Trust the experts;
Go to the Pricelessware site maintained by the alt.comp.freeware Usenet group.
The - CygWin. The Linux-like environment for Windows.
-
Total Commander
Total Commander
Personally, I can't tolerate the pathetic excuse for a file manager that is Windows Explorer.
And while we're at it, Cygwin is a handy thing to have.
As for the rest, everyone has their own preferences for image viewer, text editor, universal IM client, IRC client, etc etc etc. -
Re:Be realisticThis just isn't true anymore. OpenOffice.org is a perfectly capable office suite and recent compatability with Office has been pretty good in most cases. Performance has also improved, and will be perfectly acceptable on a relatively new computer.
Outside of Office software, Audacity is a great free audio editor
SciTE or the java-based Jedit are good text editors.
The GIMP is a good image editor, available here for Windows.
Mozilla or one of its components for mail/web browsing
For media playing you might want to try Zinf (formerly FreeAmp), Foobar2000 (nice light weight music player), WinAMP for Windows. MPlayer is a good video player for Linux (and Windows) and XMMS is a capable music player for Linux.
Celestia is a nice space exploration program.
Jabber is good for instant messaging or Trillian or GAIM if you need to chat on MSN, AIM, ICQ etc.
GNUCash is a capable accounting program.
Oh yeah, and for email, I suggest setting up an IMAP server on an old machine and using that to store your email. This can be quite difficult, though allows you to browse your email from Linux and Windows. Thunderbird is rock solid and good even though only in the early stages of development.
-
My Top List
Although others have said Mozilla as a web browser, I feel that it's too bloated and slow. Try K-Meleon or Opera instead.
CDEx is a great open-source program for ripping your legally-owned CD-audio tracks. Rip them to OGG and feel your 1337ness potential expand.
Try using ZINF instead of WinAmp (bloatware ... I haven't cared for WinAmp since early 2.x) for your sound-playing abilities. The skinning abilites are also a lot better on ZINF, plus it supports more formats than WinAmp does.
If you're not looking at getting the entire OpenOffice.org suite, you can get just AbiWord, which is a great word-processing program. OpenOffice.org, however, is really full-featured and I would say almost a must.
People have already mentioned the free anti-virus software from AVG, but it doesn't hurt to have backups, such as the free online scan from Trend Micro.
As someone else also mentioned, ZoneAlarm is also a great thing to have.
Trillian and/or GAIM are great instant-messaging.
Taking a look through SourceForge and Pricelessware are great places to go and explore on your own as well. -
must have windows apps
Here are my most favorite windows apps. Some are free. All at least have trials. They are in no particular order.
Firewall: BlackIce
Virus Scanner: AVG Anti-Virus
Instant Messaging: Trillian
Movie Player: BSPlayer
Web Browser: Slim Browser
Mail Client: The Bat!
Taskbar Improvement: True Launcher Bar
SpyWare Protection: Spybot Search & Destroy
File Compression: Win Rar
Hex Editor: Hex Workshop
Audio Player: Winamp
Ternimal Emulator (telnet/ssh/etc): SecureCRT -
Spyware stuff
The best Ad-ware / Spyware removal tool I've found is
SpyBot Search & Destroy
There is also Ad-Aware though.
Other stuff (non spyware related):
Winamp(2x is best)
Trillian/Gaim
Browsers (and mail): IE6, Mozilla, Opera are all fine
I've found both SlickRun and PopupPopper from Bayden Software to be useful as well.

Uh oh...
...so has Disney sued Cerulean Studios over a nebulous "trademark infringement"claim yet?

Re:Cooperation (no, QAing)

Not yet. The Pro version was first priority but have announced patches will be available for all versions.
Yahoo Patch Beta 1 is available for Pro customers; patches for 1.0 and .74 are on the way and will be released once the patch is 100%...
Source: http://www.trillian.cc/ (Bottom right of page) -
Money talks
According to their homepage, Trillian is currently only releasing the patch to paying customers.

Yahoo patch for Trillian Pro
Trillian Pro 2.0 users can download a patch already for Yahoo from the members section. It's been running fine for me and for other Trillian Pro users since it was released. It shouldn't be too long before the older versions of Trillian also have patches.
I expect Gaim, the Jabber Yahoo transports, and other systems will be up and running again within about 24 hours, too. :) -
Trillian patch for yahoo now available (paid only)
The paid version of Trillian has a patch now available for the yahoo issue:
pro support login
(I think their mysql is overloaded from logins right now) -
Beta Patch already released
Cerulean Studios already fought AOL and won.
If you hoof it on over to Trillian's website and logging into the member's section, you can get the beta Yahoo-patch.
How's that for response time? -
Re:Only Chat not MessengerJust an FYI for those worried about the Messenger cut-off even though the article is talking about chat rooms.
Trillian 2.0 (for win32) uses the new MSN messenger protocol so I can still talk to people over MSN even though I didn't install microsoft's client.
-
Re:Where's Open Source when you need it?
-
Trillian just released the new E update
0.74 E for the free client, Trillian Pro has an update too.
Right here.
See, not so bad right? I'm sure the Gaim people will have it fixed shortly too. -
Re:Before we start MS bashing...I think asking Trilian for a cut of what they charge is more than fair.
Yes, that's true. But Trillian is only a drop in the pool. MSN has no offerings for the GNU/Linux operating system, and the only *nix clients that I'm aware of that are worth their salt are all free (such as Gaim). Asking them for a cut of what they charge is certainly a problem (10% of 0 = 0), so Microsoft has to demand licensing fees.
I would suggest a boycott of the MSN network.
-
Re:Private property
If you look at this thread over at the trillian forums, you'd know that MSN IM is simply blocking older versions, but is not blocking 3rd parties. Trillian, for one, should be fine after the 15th. It's just a matter of being on the newer MSN protocol.
-
Trillian
For you trillian users:
Here is a Link that seems to think trillian and other 3rd parties using the "newer" protocol will be ok.
