Comics imitating life
The Calvin and hobbes from Sept. 15th emphasized this same uncertainty about modern air travel.
-
C & H
Ahh yes, modern air travel, don't trust it.

Whoa....Creepy
Someone in here recommended Boondocks, so I thought I'd check it out....Funny. Flipping through old strips I found this. Apropos of my earlier post...

Re:Get Fuzzy!?
Oh come on. Have you actually read the comic? Get Fuzzy is to Garfield as Non Sequitur is to Family Circus.
-
Re:A start
That and Far Side...most papers in my area that carried it replaced it with that shitty knock-off "Close to Home" (www.ucomics.com).
-
Re:BoondocksPerhaps you meant to reference this Boondocks strip instead?
It's especially ironic given all the
/.ers complaining that Bloom County hasn't aged well. -
Boondocks
Am I the only one who feels there's a little Bloom County inside of the Boondocks ? I think they both have the same political outlook, only instead of a penguin, the Boondocks has a militant black teenager.

Boondocks!
Check out The Boondocks if your paper has it, or find it online.
It even had DMCA bashing in it at one point!
And it cunningly anticipated Berke Breathed's return. -

Re:Opus is Back!It was amazing re-reading all of these again and how many topics written in the 80's are still topical today -
especially the strips with political overtones
The Boondocks (another great strip) has remarked on just that. -
Newspapers...
Great point about newspapers, they're an industry that has rapidly embraced the digital age. With my new wireless setup, every morning i can sit down at the breakfast table with my laptop, check my e-mail, read the news, read my local news, and even read the comics that would come with the pulp and ink morning roll. I'm sure i'll apreciate this situation even more come winter when i can spare myself going out on the porch in my boxers(i live in WI *shiver*). Newspapers already make most of their money from advertising, the internet just saves them on materials and distribution.

Books vs. Strips
The article is also mixing comic books and comic strips. Sure, stuff like Dilbert , User Friendly, The Boondocks, and Achewood work well on the web. They're short and easy to read. Most people who read comic books, however, relish the strip to the store, holding it in their hands, filling up the long white boxes...

Re:lindows... I still don't get it
I'm reminded of a Fox Trot comic from a few weeks back.
-
Foxtrot strikes a chord...
Seems like Foxtrot from Monday did a good job of making fun of this whole silly mess. Too bad we can not turn the tides on RIAA as easily as Jason.

Re: Prior Prior art:btw for those new to computers, the site linked to in the parent has a "Message Alert" box. this is an advert, you do not have "1 message waiting for you"
erk. I apologize to anyone that got that. Lord knows I despise those things. My filter must've nailed it, because I didn't see it. Even when I checked after rokzy's warning. Next time, I'll be a bad netizen and deep link.

Shocked at Doonesbury
I was going to say the Doonesbury site, and even noticed that I was a bit behind reading them... Then I went there. (Microsoft's) Slate has taken it over! The site used to look like the white area without the Slate shit around it, but I guess MS felt that interface was too intuiti... err... not branded enough. First the subscription debacle of Non Sequitur and now this. Damn it!

*yawn*
This is so old hat...

Re:The Evolutionist
Of course, the Earth isn't a closed system, so the entrophy argument is complete bull; you see, there is this little thing called the Sun...
Of course, so's the rest of this. Today's Doonesbury is kind of apt... -
The Hitler of the 21st century?(offtopic) So you're saying we should do something about Dubya? (/offtopic)
Still, it sure sounds like Theo screwed this up. You'd think he could keep his mouth shut until he cashed the cheque...

Everything you know is wrongNot being a parent, but having talked with many friends who are parents, I will give you the sage advice that I have found was unanimously agreed upon:
Take every bit of advice about raising children you ever read in books and completely forget it.
God forbid you neglect and abuse them, but the "parent method" books don't seem to work for a lot of parents (scheduling feedings around the mom?!) because kids aren't necessarily wired the way shrinks want them to be raised.
Don't ever let somebody convince you that your child needs Ritalin. Ritalin is evil and will destroy your child.
Try and do private school - or even better, home school.
Lose the second income. Somebody needs to play "mom". Even better is do work from home if possible. Adam@home, anybody?
And since we're on working at home, the kid will want you to know what s/he's into (you know that excited babbling that kidlings go into when they get inside from playing?), they want to know what you're doing. If you code in C, teach him C. If you speak TCP/IP, teach him zen and the art of Internet Protocol. Yes, it's a little old fashioned and traditional to pass the trade down to the next generation, but it's a good way to bond.
Most importantly, love and cherish that child like they were an extension of you. Frankly, that's exactly what they are - half you and half her.
Good luck and congratulations.

Already done here. -
Re:Target demographic: 28-38
Now, do this with Calivn and Hobbes!
Done!
Just go here and sign up (you're limited to one comic per email address, but you can get Calvin and Hobbes, in addition many current strips). It's not on the week-in-two-days schedule, but it is cycling through the comics. -
UComics Business Model
I am a big fan of online comics, but I have trouble with UComics' site layout. Sites like comics.com have a link above each comic that says "NEXT." So if I want to I can browse through all the comics.
Ucomics, on the other hand only lists their comics in an index. If you want to read several comics, you have to constantly use the back button, or sign up for their My Comics page, and therefore give information to marketers.
This annoyed me so much, in fact, that I made my own comics page on my website, just so I didn't have to put up with this.
However, I probably will sign up with UComics. There is no way I will miss one of my favorite comics of all time. -
Breathed's complaint about shrinking comics.
If I recall correctly (and it's mentioned in his recent Onion-AV-club interview), one of the major factors that made Berke Breathed retire was that comic strips were being shrunk to unreadable sizes. (This is currently really annoying me with Boondocks, even ONLINE fer Goodness sake!).
I always wondered, though, what if Berke had followed the path blazed by Dr. Fun , who from day 1 was publishing a 640x480 color image for each panel? Keep each daily strip 480 pixels high, and stipulate that it not be shrunk
... end of problem! -
Re:Now that's worth paying for...

Re:Target demographic: 28-38

already done. Except that you can view some for free. -
Multnomah County Educational Service District
The Multnomah County, Oregon ESD already has a Linux distribution optimized for use in public schools. Microsoft apparently didn't really check around before they threatened MESD with a MS license audit. This thoroughly upset the locals, who rallied thier support. Microsoft lost the game of chicken when they stopped smoking crack and realised threatening a broke school district kills your PR and loses customers.

My daily sites
When i wake up in the morning, I crack open the daily newspapaper and.... wait that's not true. Lets start again. When I wake up in the morning I turn on my computer, and check out... webcomics.
Angst Technology, Ctrl Alt Del, Dilbert, Errant Story, Force Monkeys, Fox Trot, goats, Life of Riley, Mac Hall, Megatokyo, Misfire, Penny Arcade!, Sinfest, Something Positive, and finally Wendy.
Then, after my daily webcomic barage (not to say that these all update on a daily basis. Some are good [ like ctrl alt del, and penny arcade ] and update regularly. others... well...) I frequent other sites, for information.
Slashdot of course (not linking it...)
Gamespot
Games workshop,
and
Unconventional Conformity.
Other than that, I have a few sites i goto every so often. Or ones which i check throughout the day. But they become less important than the comics.
-Gharbad -
mmm...i like webcomicsGenerally, I tend to start my day with Webcomics:
- Machall - best..webcomic...ever (updates: "tues, thurs, sat" but more like when he gets around to it)
- Penny Arcade - a very popular, and very funny gaming comic (M W F)
- Megatokyo - a well drawn comic with a strong story mangaish (M W F)
- Ctrl-Alt-Del - cut and paste, but always funny (Daily)
- Something Positive - kinda cut and paste, but often very funny (daily)
- Real Life - cut and paste, but still a pretty funny gaming comic (mostly daily)
- Calvin and Hobbes - rereleasing C+H online, 10 years delayed...my personal fav (daily)
- Errant Story - a well drawn, story based modernish fantasy comic (updates every other day or so)
- Angst Technology - a game software firm and their antics (updates almost daily)
Then (if there's still time before class, if not just after) I generally see whats up on- (as if you need the link)Slashdot
- CBC News Canadian news from the CBC
- Debian Planet good debian news
- Footnotes GNOME news
- Ars Technica another tech site, often has interesting projects too...
- Anime News Network exactly what the name implies.
- Unconventional Conformity a blog.
- The Weather Network - for my local weather
And well, thats about it. That I check frequently at least. I do like webcomics and strongly suggest that you check out Machall Megatokyo and Errant Story if you don't already though! And then there's also everything2 but its not news and I can't check it daily (or else I would do nothing all day but read!) its too good at just drawing you in. And the anime turnpike to go browsing through Anime fansites...

I can't say this better than the comic strip CathyCheck this out.
It echos my thought exactly.

Ron Headrest
So far no one seems to have mentioned Gary Trudeau's Ronald Reagan alter-ego on "Doonesbury,"
"Ron Headrest":
"I'll s-s-set up illegal covert operations and lie about them to Congress and the American p-p-people! If detected I promise to falsify documents, shred evidence and preserve plausible de-de-deniability! Then I'll take the Fifth! But with moist eyes! And selflessly ...!" -
Semi OT, but...
... I think the author of Foxtrot reads Slashdot.
Check out today's (02-04-03) cartoon.

Re:NRA is an extreme point-of-view?you go through more checks getting your driver's license than you used to in order to buy a gun
That makes sense, since a driver's license is all you need to buy dynamite in some places...
And while I'm pro-gun, I still found this funny...

Ellen Feiss is not off-topic......to any Mac fanatic who's read this far.
Guys, look! She's now in Foxtrot!
