In fact today http://userfriendly.org/ cartoon has something quite similar.
A picture is worth a thousand words! -
Isn't it obvious...
Violence is OK but sex is bad. Or, how politicians can carp about something for free without someone demanding their head. Seriously, how many people are going to admit that they watch pornography but don't want to pay Uncle Sam for the privilige?

Re:What about their plant in Colorado?
Ah typical of slashdot ^_- the ggggp knew that intel had scrapped a plant in colorado but didn't know they had another plant there, and the people who worked at the plant there didn't know they had bought and scrapped plans to use a different plant there...
those of you wondering, yes, if you work at fab 23 it's still there... unless of course someone did something like... this! -
Play Distro Wars with themhttp://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20040111
It wont really teach them what OOS is but it will be fun and introduce them to some of the players.

Re:Color choices.
I wonder if there's any good human-interface text to read about designing this sort of thing.
This man's work gives much insight into UI design.
Oddly enough, I didn't know about him until I saw This memorial, which is linked to from the wikipedia article. RIP Jef Raskin. -
Re:My ISP...
The Office analogy still holds up. The consumer feels he is under utilizing the product, and therefore chooses to violate the terms of use in the name of "fairness". I don't see how running Office in parallel invalidates the analogy, if anything it argues against sharing bandwidth since that represents a real cost (vs. MS losing the opportunity to sell another Office license).
It affects the degree of any offence. In reselling (or giving on) what you have already bought you could easily be protected by 'first sale' (moral and legal) rights, as you physically can't all use the same bandwidth; spare capacity is not analogous to a new instance (of Office). As for the sum that the ISP possibly forgoes in not selling another connection, the validity of that concern depends upon the validity of the initial transfer of bandwidth, otherwise we're arguing that the ISP is suffering unjustly because you have more money in your wallet that you could give them.
-
Except...
When someone comes along and uses the connection without the users knowledge
The part of the article concerned with the ISP's views makes it clear that they consider the availability, not the [original] user's state of knowledge to be the relevant issue.Giving them the password and a URL for the terms and conditions wouldn't satisfy them IMO. To them, I expect, additional users who might have otherwise have bought a connection would be considered 'thieves'.

Please provide name and location of the 14...
We would like to play the Kevin Bacon's game with those 14. If they are found connected to Microsoft or other pro-patent monopolies - I suppose google bugsmear could help. Same action if ignorance and/or apathy detected.

Bonzi!
It seems that Slashdot isn't the only ones covering this.

piracy is just a natural phenomenonI am too young to remember the age of freedom before the commercial world took over software. But I can make out how it would have felt from whatever Free Software is doing to the youngsters today. It must've felt like the current astrophysics or higher mathematics of today. I wonder what happens when those things have real applications and multinationals pushing reasearch ( already grant money seems to be corrupting them ).
> [People] just don't see it as theft. They just see it as inevitable, particularly as new technologies become available...
Userfriendly has hit the nail on the head with this explanation of the economics of software piracy. The costs of piracy had hit companies way back in late nineties, these days the piracy factor is calculated into the initial pricing. Where I was working before, they had estimated ~19% piracy rate for a mobile phone app. It is slowly starting to become a market force for the software industry - and the companies hate that. (price it too high, we'll pirate !)
The american corporate's blood sucking is slowly starting to show on the economy. what price for - America Inc (specializing in mergers with oil rich countries with dictators) ?. -

Degree vs. Expererience. The primary difference is for most people in the University System the Degree means everything. If you have 2 PhD vs. Having 1 PhD and 8 years experience. The 2 PhD person usually get more respect in general.
In Business... Education vs Experience.Education Experience
In Education... Education vs Experience.
AA 1.0
AS 1.5
BA 2.0
BS 2.5
MA 3.0
MS 3.5
MBA 4.0
PhD 4.5
PhD++ Add one year for each PhDEducation Experience
The reasons for this change is the fact when in the buisness environment experience has more value because you can be as book learned as you want but the bottom line is if you can do the work. So you have spend 8 years in school to get a PhD and you get a job with an other guy who has an BS and 3 years experience. And this guy with the BS is working much faster then you because when he programs he uses languages that are more for Rapid Application Development and have all the tools that he needs to get the job done. While you are still dorking with pointers to get your C level string class to work the way it needs to be done.
AA 4.0
AS 4.1
BA 8.0
BS 8.5
MA 10.0
MS 10.5
MBA 6.0
PhD 20
PhD++ Add 5 year for each PhD
Alternative in the education field where book learned is where it is at. Experience just doen't cut it because with experience you often learn how to do one thing and do it well and you miss the breth of knowlege or don't bother going further down. So one hour of reading a theory book on how Linux Workes vs. A guy who have been working for Linux for many years and still doesn't know which scheduling system it uses. So when it comes for review and people just start asking him questions about the OS the guy with experience could be loss. While the guy with the PhD has the answer.
But the reason why there is a huge gap between the difference vs education and business is that many people in education look down at business(And many were never seriously in business other then say a Hamburger Flipper Job) while business generally respect education to an extent (Because most people in business were in college at one point). Much like this weeks User Friendly shows in an exaggerated view. -

Re:So...
Think of it this way. PA and UF are both comdeians. Both are trying to go out there and deliver the funny. PA has more varied jokes while UF tends to go the Linux be are teh roxxor route. Occasionally they'll try telling the same kind of joke, maybe customer support for example. UF's material is like this http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20050328 PA's version of customer support is this http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2000-0
2 -09&res=l Now obviously the PA one is funnier. You know this, I know this, Illiad knows this. But the Rabid Userfriendly Fans (TM) refuse to believe anything is funny unless their overlord writes it. So they bitch about how everyone unfairly says Uf sucks, even though everyone and their mom knows UF sucks hardcore. A PA fan points this fact out, and like fanboy fights throuhgout the internet a flamewar begins. -
Re:So...
Well... as someone who is not a huge fan of either comic, I prefer dieselsweeties, PA fans are not necessarily picking on a crowd but on the comics themselves.
Looking at the latest commics

Penny Arcade Advantages
Artwork:
Color, it's almost mandatory for this time in the web.
Text, the text is easily legible and easy to follow.
Drawing, the drawing is nice, again this is a must in the visual age.
Story:
The stories are relatively easy to understand and follow, even for one who is unfamiliar with concepts. It's easy to relate to being snuck into a place, to relate to a gigantic piece of crap such as E3 or most large venues (trade shows, meetings, faires, conferences...) lastly it connects on lowest common denomitator in addition to the other levels, 3 tits? Ooh boobies.
User Friendly Advantages
Random Link... kind of cool
User Friendly Disadvantages
Artwork:
Not pleasing to look at, B&W, lots of text that's hard to read and too much to read for a comic. The art work is secondary.
Story:
Really only reaches out to a niche audience tech support or anyone who's been called on for support. It's rather elitist in nature, suggesting that users only serve to belittle tech workers. Not very funny on any level except the elitist.
That is why PA fans, or anyone for that matter might pick on UF. -
So...
Where does User Friendly fit in the scheme of things?

Talk about standing in line...

The price of fame?
It's going to be the price of popularity.
I've been subscribed to the Debian users list for years. They get a lot of mail, but most of it is from users who generally score above the baboon on the UF intelligence test. In short, they are generally technically adept questions that have some thought behind them. Not all, but a lot of them.
I spend a year subscribed to the SuSE users list and have quite a different impression. They score around mollusk. The questions are the most annoying and obvious questions. I clearly reminded me of a gaggle of Windows Users more than anything else.
As Open Source software goes mainstream, we will be reminded that mainstream is different. They are not problem solvers like the more stereotypical geek community. They like things that work, but when they don't work, regardless of the reason, they are a bit lost.
If you make a great product, not only will the great people use it.

Re:Great...Well, the total melt-down of your laptop could be a disaster for the sotrage and use of your DNA.
Which is exactly why UserFriendly advises you to use it as a Nucular powered UPS - but it is adivsable to use real lead Shielding rather than make your dog and co-workers drink heavy water. The only downside is that the American army is likely to invade your backyard (or maybe they won't because you have nukes).
