Re:Foods that begin with "Q"
I learned this naming scheme from a job I had in the late 90's. Nouns that begin with a particular letter is specific enough to give good names, yet general enough that you shouldn't run out any time soon. Personally, I use the letter K.
- krikkit - a reference from the HHGTTG
- kosmo - after Kosmo Kramer from Seinfeld. Kramer has not yet been assigned
- kevlar - the firewall
- kipling - a cute little O2. In UserFriendly, the AI is an O2, and is often portrayed as being rather artistic.
- kang - a (now dead) laptop
- kodos - its replacement (don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!)
It was difficult to choose names at first, and I refused to accept names that started with 'kn' as it was a cop-out. I named a Macbook 'knowledge' at one point, but I hated the name. Now, I don't think I could buy enough computers to exhaust all my ideas.

Re:Uncertainty and certainty
Second, it proves they do not know precisely what they are doing. (Again this should be obvious, (as there would be no point in building the LHC, if they knew precisely what was going to happen). But it again highlights how its assumed they do know what they are doing, when in fact they cannot know).
Sorry - you're a few days late with this thought.

Re:Phantom power has it's use.
and be ready to boot up in a timely manner?
I've never really considered the boot up time to be that terrible for TVs that I have turned on manually in the past. I don't consider TV that important that the difference between 2-3 seconds (LCD) and maybe 20-30 (old CRT) is at all important.
Given that people accept 10-minute bootup times on DVDs, why would they be particularly sensitive to 20-second bootup times on a television?

Re:Dear Bruce,
I can't seem to find any official mention of it. I remember when I first got it I googled and found someone talking about it on a private blog. Here's a thread with a couple of people talking about it.
I'm guessing it must be down to getting a good rating in M2.

User friendly had a great comic on this
I know it's not the ever popular xkcd, but this comic is just too appropriate here. http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20081109

Re:Let's cut the conspiracy theory
That's why Eric Raymond et. al. coined the term "Open Source" back in '96 or thereabouts: because most people presume that "free" means "free as in beer," and get suspicious. But the name "open source" has its own problems, namely RMS railed against it because it doesn't address the idea of freedom.
And there may be another wee problem with it...

Re:Oblig UserFriendly
User Friendly is *never* "oblig"- it's a piss-poor excuse for a strip. It's a drawn at the level of a moderately-talented fourteen year old still showing too much influence from the "Draw Your Own Cartoons By Using Our Forumulaic Style" book.
But its main problem- and what I really dislike about it- is that it seems to assume that including geek-centric material and viewpoints in itself automatically makes it funny. It's used this as a free pass for years.
Example; basically a straight rehash of geek-friendly topic du jour, followed by a straightforward aside that would barely deserve a "Score:3, Funny" on Slashdot and isn't particularly witty, insightful or playful with the subject itself. It's totally reliant on letting the reader laugh again at a story about silly people (and feel superior), but it adds nothing to it.
If User Friendly launched today, it would be ignored for what it was; a badly drawn, unfunny, third-rate, run-of-the-mill webcomic. -

Re:Here's the thing that bugs me about xkcd
The thing I dislike about xkcd is the cringeworthy lameness of it, which crosses the line (as this site often does) from 'geeky but interesting' to 'jesus, I hope your nerdiness doesn't rub off on me'.
I disagree, although I do see where you're coming from as this is pretty much exactly how I feel about User Friendly. XKCD does have it's slightly lame/cringe moments but for the most part it's inspired observational comedy imho.

Re:5-nines SLA
Not many people know this, but it's actually nine-fives.. http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20080310
But I swear 5-9's is one of those marketing buzzwords that salespeople love to throw out there because it sounds nice regardless of their products actual ability to provide it. Beware the fine print.

What about nine fives?
If they only promised nine fives of reliability they'd be back up to snuff by Wednesday.

Why Google Must Never, Ever Be Bought By Microsoft
http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20051009&mode=classic
The funny thing is that it was predicted Microsoft might sway search results for financial gain, but by doing this, they'd allow spammers and the like to destroy search results.
I'm not sure if people recall, but Google wasn't the first, or the biggest search engine with the internet was first catching on fire. You'd mess around with sites like Altavista, Lycos, Excite, etc. and rarely find what you were looking for. You'd search for sports scores and come across a Gillian Andersen fan page. Then again at the time, 80% of the internet consisted of Gillian Andersen fan pages. However, Google's strength was solid search results. You found what you were looking for right away.
I'm not sure allowing jerk-offs to screw with the results with help in the least. I know I would attempt to abuse the situation to increase my pagerank.

Re:militant, defiant, rebellious
Software. Open Source delivers software. Software that the user can use.
And a community that's all too happy to tell noobs "You're not 'leet enough for our software."
Assuming (and it is a large assumption, considering market share) that FOSS is a threat to Microsoft at all, the area of customer service is where Microsoft will defeat FOSS, I fear. So many of the current FOSS projects have people who make the barriers of learning and using FOSS so high that cartoons like this one rapidly lose all humor.

Re:It's mildly shocking...
Or do you think that those commercials are an accurate display of the Mac vs. PC world? If you do than you've been fooled by one of the great showmen of our times.
Yes, Jobs is an insanely great showman (ha!). Yes, Apple is trading heavily on an image (one largely crafted under Jobs' direction). And finally - yes, Apple's amusing little commercials aren't very good guides on the issues involved in picking a computing platform.
But comparing them to Comcast? Wow. Talk about reality distortion.
Let's cover a few more real facts about Apple. They produce good products. They have slick designs. And they run slick commercials that make a lot out of real issues facing their competitors (while not really highlighting their own shortcomings). All of that is being directed towards rather specific markets.
I should note that I'm probably not part of those markets and not a real Apple fan. I almost got an Apple][ back in the day - but didn't. I'm intrigued by the new OSX systems but not enough to seriously consider buying one. And the only Apple product I've ever owned in a couple decades of being an electronics consumer is an iPod - and even then I'm not really buying in on the image. But I'm willing to allow that Apple does good work. Even if it's not quite as insanely great as some would have me believe.

it's part of the stereotype. If your a fatso (me). You will be most likely to get the job. Wearing glasses helps. Evil Spock beard is better, best not to look like Pitr from User Friendly, go for Sid http://www.userfriendly.org/cartoons/sid/ but extra weight helps.
