Re:Everyone repeat after me:"Correlation does not necessarily equate to causality"
Yes it does. Observe: "You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature." (see graph) - from http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/ -

FSM!"No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office, or public trust, in this State; nor shall any one be excluded from holding office on account of his religious sentiments, provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being."

Re:Think of the children!!!
Totally Agree! Let's start a campaign!
"Do you want your kids like maniacs calling websites from home asking to remove content?
What if it is your preferred pr0n?
Do you want your kids banning you because you're listening a recorded tape from your old gf?
Now it's time, refuse to follow **AA and become a Pirate (this will also contribute to reduce global warming)

Re:That doesn't debunk global warming
And now you will be modded as a troll because people are incredibly stupid and WILL NOT take responsibility. EVER. Maybe when they are dying, but not a fortnight before that!
One can count on one hand the number of politicians that in recent memory have taken a responsibility for any crap they caused. And not for the big things. See Iraq war for example. Now everyone will say that politicians are liars and such, but they are just people. Normal people. Just like the rest of the population that thinks drinking and driving is not right but they NEVER drive drunk (only one beer officer!). Or that they are not distracted by a cell phone while driving. Or it is always someone else's fault why they are fat and out of shape. No time to exercise because of the job, kids and all that beer and TV watching! Or no time to work because of shashdot! (douh!)
The same is true for the entire thing with what is to blame for the global warming. Clearly it is the thing that is causing the CO2 amount in atmosphere to double - a smaller change is a change between a warm period and ice age. Now, we have double of that change above the warm period. What is causing that? Volcanoes? I don't see those blowing up. I don't see a super volcano blowing in Yellowstone (US park that is a super volcano). No, it is us the people that are burning billions and billion of barrels of oil each year. Hell, not only are we causing global warming but we are also causing the oceans to increase in acidity.
So what if sunspots correlate with whatever. I'm sure one could correlate anything with anything. We all know that global warming is caused by pirates http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/ . Correlation does NOT mean cause and effect.
On the other hand, CO2 and methane increase is the cause of global warming because CO2 and methane not only is correlated with temperature changes in the past, but is known to be a greenhouse gas (gas that traps heat). And since we are producing CO2, what is then the cause of the temperature increase?
PS. As the article says, sunspots remained about the same in the last 60 years yet we are seeing an accelerated global warming. Enough said. -
Two creation stories
Furthermore, 34% of college graduates said they accept the Biblical story of creation as fact.
There is one further question: Which one?
Genesis Chapter 1 has animals created before man. Genesis Chapter 2:19 implies that animals were created after man. As always, if you want to accept something as fact, you need to prepare to handle any contradictions that arise (or otherwise accept it as "best fit" or a theory.) The forceful application of religion as fact as resulted in problems, also known as witch-burning or equivalants thereof.
A scientist that digs the mysteries of a universe can easily believe that his deity is more intelligent than what most people think, as it takes skill to make self-assembling life forms without micro-managing the design.
As a final point, there's one religion that embraces the theory of evolution - which proves that science and religion are not incompatible. -
Visit Kansas
Half the USA wants evolution out of the classroom and ban scientific research.
Next they'll take the telescopes away because they are 'Tools of Blasphemy!'
Kansas, not a scientific powerhouse?

Oh noes DOOM is approaching!
This is most distressing. Why, pirates are already few in number, and heavily hunted. With this insidious new canine threat, the Flying Spaghetti Monster will become more furious. As you can see , natural weather disasters, globl warming, etc are all DIRECTLY related to the number of pirates (FSM's chosen Missionaries) in the world. If more begin disappearing, we're all doomed! We must stand as one and oppose his nefarious threat to our existence.

Important!!! Don't let the Pastafarians know this!
Because long, thin filaments have large surface areas for holding charge, the spacecraft might look like Einstein's head -- with wiry filaments sticking out at all angles -- or a weird space 'stocking.'
Oh no! The Pastafarians secret spaceship design has leaked out. Now all the acolytes of The Flying Spagetti Monster will know the high inner circle secret that it is HE who travels by the spaceship and not that HE is the spaceship. -
Re:So turnabout is fair play?
If I understood what you were saying, then you might have a point.
Are saying that the Earth is warming due to human activity? Or are you saying that the Earth isn't warming? Or are you saying human activity isn't having an impact on the Earth's climate? Or are you saying that there is no inverse relationship between the number of pirates and global temperature? Because if you are and I think you must be, then the Flying Spaghetti Monster will not be pleased. Well, he/she/it may not care.
May you be touched by His Noodly Appendage. -
Of course it's anthropogenic
As everybody knows, the true cause of global warming is a lack of pirates in the world.

Re:Disturbing?
I realize the populace here at Slashdot is 99% atheist
I'm Pastafarian you insensitive clod!
that's only if you believe in Islam. That's why they still ride camels over there.
Someone needs a quick history lesson. Islamic faith is not at all against education - in fact at one point if you wanted to be on the cutting edge in some fields (mathematics, medicine) you had to study in Persia. The bit about keeping people in the 9th century has to do with politics and power, rather than religion.
Religion is what got the United States on its feet
Members of this American religion will be glad to hear that. I thought it was a LACK of state religion and religious persecution that encouraged the colonization of the US.
religion provides morals and helps to keep the people more in line.
You are suggesting that atheists are "immoral" and out of line. Stop right there, because it's incorrect. I'm an atheist and an extremely moral person. I don't break the law (except for the odd speeding ticket). My work as a physician regularly puts me in a position of having great power over others (because of sedatives during a procedure, due to psychological problems in a patient, or simply the trust in the physician-patient relationship) and yet I've never abused that power. An immoral person would. In fact, if you look at history, I could argue that a great deal of sexual abuse has been commited by religious people...
If man were naturally good, there'd be no need for religion
You seem to have bought into that argument. Too bad you can't see that religion is only another form of politics. Do what I say and get a "reward". Do something I don't approve of, and you get a "punishment". This is beautiful since no one can deny the existence of these rewards and punishments (and if they try, they get ridiculed and asked to "prove" that it's NOT true), and they don't cost a thing.
Not only that, if someone dares to contradict my "teachings", I can bring enormous social pressure to bear. I can even have that person killed with the APPROVAL of the masses. Religion is GREAT! There's NO downside for a religious leader - except perhaps having to pretend to practice what you preach once in a while.
I agree that religion supports law since it's a form of mind control. However a society with strict adherence to the law and completely lacking in freedom discourages the acquisition of knowledge - as you yourself pointed out when you incorrectly attributed this a generalized islamic discouragement of education. -

I guess this means search engines in general should only show URL results and nothing else, heck even the title of the page may be copyrighted.
Then a "totally legal" search for flying spaghetty monster would look like this:

Re:Calling Bullshit on this.
Can I call Bullshit on your source? You're looking to a blog for all your information on something you believe may cause the end of the world as we know it. Something that important I would think you would try to find someone who isnt just saying "What I Know Is...." Plus, we all know the real reason for global warming is lack of Pirates.
But something I found interesting that also may be used to support the solar radiation hypothesis is that at least three other planets in our solar system are also expereiecing "global warming." Mainly Mars and Pluto. Now that would likely mean one of two things, at least a large percentage of global warming has absolutly nothing to do with human impact, or the greenhouse gases we produce are also warming Pluto. -

It surely be pirates, jim lad. Never a truer tale been told. All this shows is that pirate decline may be associated with cosmic rays.

Re:Religion
Such a religion already exists: Pastafarianism. Or, at least, if free speech isn't already one of its tenets, it's a young enough religion that I'm sure they'd add it if you asked nicely. rAmen!

$25 Million Buys a lot of Pirates...
The science is already in: more pirates equals less global warming. Assuming an average pirate salary of three shillings and sixpence, adjusted for inflation, carry the one, that's... erm... like a billion pirates.

Re:Tom Cruise MissileChristian beliefs: A magical man born of a virgin died on a cross, In the original story Mary was a 'young woman' but was this was mistakenly translated as 'virgin' by the Greeks. A similar mistake was made when translating the Koran where 'white raisins' was thought to mean 'virgins' as a heavenly reward for martyrs. But for some reason neither religion is willing to consider this in their doctrine.
Besides we all know that FSMism is the only REAL religion. -

Are you seriously claiming...
that 30 years of additional data is a sufficient basis to support diametrically opposed claims of millenia-scale, global climate change? HAW! HAW!
Quote: "While a few scientists expressed concern, most admitted they didn't have enough data, at the time, to make any real predictions." An honest scientist would say that they don't have enough data, NOW, to make any real predictions or claims of causality. After all, everyone knows that global warming is actually caused by a lack of pirates. -

Re:Let him put his money where his mouth is
I'd like them to at least be self-consistent. For example, do as their bible instructs and kill any of their followers who doesn't keep their sabbath, and to excommunicate anyone who has sex when the woman is on her period http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/sex_mens
t ruate.htmlI see nobody has collected on the $1 million dollar offer to prove that Jesus isn't the son of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
...Friday, August 19, 2005 Boing Boing's $250,000 Intelligent Design challenge (UPDATED: $1 million) Yesterday, I posted an item to Boing Boing about the growing popularity of Pastafarianism, a new religion that worships Flying Spaghetti Monster, initially created to protest the Kansas State School Board's decision to teach "Intelligent Design" in schools.
In regards to your sig:
"Mary had a little lamb, the doctor was surprised. When Old McDonald had a farm, the poor guy nearly died."
Mary had a little sheep,
And with that sheep she went to sleep ...
The sheep turned out to be a ram -
Mary had a little lamb, ... -
Absolute sillyness
This is taking textbook sillyness to a new level - alomst as if they were treating the bible as a literal text that was written directly by a major deity. Usually, you call thrm out on their sillyness by exploiting some contradictions (quickref) in the bible (as in the case of the first two chapters of Genesis).
I won't do a blow-by-blow, as there's more than enough cut-n-paste material available.
The person complaining about the film also makes one incorrect assertion - he assumes that religion is incompatible with Science when science can simply be used to indicate that God is more clever than what most people originally thought. (Or when a religion forcefully accepts certain sciences.)
BTW, the best way to counter Global Warming is a direct attack. Wikipedia has a page concerning the Global Warming Controversy that does not rely on a specific religion - and it doesn't result in sillyness of "Global warming is a theory - you should teach the opposing viewpoint, Global Warming." -
Pirates!
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has evidence that global warming is actually caused by the shrinking number of pirates since 1800. I feel that students should be made aware of this in their science classes and encouraged to think about becoming pirates to aid the situation.

FSM!
I just can't believe that no one in the

I believe you might be insulting the followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster http://www.venganza.org/. His Noodily Appendage did not "slip" the meatball from the plate, it was thrust forcefully because it was not worth to touch the plate of His Noodiliness.

WTF is wrong with this country
If I didn't know my history well enough to know that this country was founded by atheistic-leaning deists so that a variety of religious could (and did) immigrate here to practice their religion without being murdered by the government for it, I would ask "why are we selling such insane tripe?"
Alas, while "this country was not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion" (as George Washington once said), the nation was attractive in its design of keeping religion and government separate, thus attracting the craziest religious wackos Europe had to offer.
And so today, we have the descendants of those WASPs (and their non-Bible-reading, believers-in-anything, unthinking Catholic parallels) running the nation and pushing -- of all things -- a video game that, against one of the 10 commandments ("thou shalt not kill"), has you running around murdering unbelievers. But then, who ever said religious people were consistent and non-hypocritical?
The game is popular enough to show up on Wal-Mart shelves, and because Wal-Mart carries the game, it is clear that the intended market for the game are the lower classes -- just the sort of people who believe most-strongly in the nonsense that is all deistic belief (whether Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, atheist, or any other belief in the existence/non-existence of a god).
The U.S. is one frighteningly-ignorant nation sometimes.

Refuse to buy, or ask the shop to open it
I remember that I had to use scissors to get my AMD Athlon XP CPU from its stupid packaging. Thank FSM, they later changed the packaging for their Athlon 64 CPUs. Nowadays when I want to buy a USB hub or another product and I can choose between one in paper packaging and another in plastic packaging, I always prefer the product in packaging that can be opened with hands. I think that if a package needs scissors or another tool to open, then it is the responsibility of the retailer to open it for me before I get it to my home or office. In fact whenever I have to buy a product in plastic packaging, after I pay for it by credit card, I ask a shop employee to open it for me: "Can you please open the packaging for me, because I have no scissors at my office and I need to use it immediately?". Many times they do it. The ones who don't lose me as a customer. As for the manufacturers, if I notice that a company uses stupid packaging across its whole product range, then I tend to prefer its competitors. Vote with your Euros or dollars, folks.

Re:Complete Misinterpretation
I live in Southern Ohio, I would go out protesting against this museum along with anyone else who wishes to do so.
Nah, let them have their silly museum. If you want to do something to mess with them, buy some land across the street and open a museum to the Giant Spaghetti Monster. In it, mimic every single display in the the other museum, but with a Spaghetti theme. I bet you get more visitors. -
