Ritz Disposable Digital PV2 camera
I haxored my camera - it's the new version of the disposable digital camera I hacked last year. This version took more work, mainly because it uses an obscure processor & has a complicated banked-memory scheme (128K of code in 16K window). I've been able to modify the firmware so that I can use the standard windows driver for another camera with this one -- so we can get images off of it. I'm working on other mods - hopefully a "picture frame mode" and maybe a kite-camera timer. Other people are developing camera "skins".
my main PV2 camera page -
DSL is not the threat, it's Fios
DSL is so 1900's, it just isn't worth worrying about. DSL cannot reach far enough to affect all that many Comcast cable customers.
What Comcast is really worried about is Verizon's new fiber rollout, which provides far more bandwidth (15Mbps/2Mbps) for a whole lot of customers at a very reasonable price ($50/mo.). -
Re:Problem with BroadbandUmm... what about FIOS?
That seems plenty fast to me...
-
Verizon FIOS
Verizon is working frantically to lay the optic fiber door-to-door. They already offer superfast internet speeds 15Mbps/2Mbps for $49.95 in some markets. The service is called FIOS (http://www.verizon.net/fios) and I strongly believe that Verizon is working hard to get into Cable TV business. They already offer DIRECTV® deals with their unlimited Freedom long distance package.

2000 Election
Many pundits expressed the opinion that votes for Ralph Nader resulted in Al Gore losing the election. To test this theory, we gave all of Nader's votes to Gore and all of Buchanan's votes to Bush ("two-way"). This resulted in Gore taking Florida and New Hampshire from Bush, giving Gore victory with a total of 296 electoral votes.
A few pundits expressed the opinion that Pat Buchanan harmed George W. Bush's election chances. To test this theory, we gave all of Buchanan's votes to Bush but let Nader keep his votes ("three-way"). This resulted in Bush taking Iowa, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin from Gore, giving Bush a total of 301 electoral votes.

Re:Bandwidth is unnecessary for 1 way connections
What's so insightful about the post above? It's just somebody's pessimistic comments about what he thinks might be true. Now post me some links of other providers who do the same thing or proof Verizon has this in mind, and I might think otherwise...
Have you ever read Verison's terms of service?
You may not use the Broadband Service to host any type of server personal or commercial in nature.
Translation: We don't believe in the end-to-end nature of the Internet. Consume all you want, but don't even think about producing something!
This probably doesn't matter to most people, but it irks me when companies try to turn the Internet into interactive television.

Escape clauses - I found one
any such contract that had been vetted by a lawyer (and even many that haven't been) should have an escape clause along the lines of "if they're not fulfilling their end of the bargain, you can pull out."
Actually, it appears you're right. For instance, Verizon Online's TOS states that "a service-related problem that Verizon has not cured" can lead to a waiver of the termination fee. However, other monopoly providers' escape clauses for residential accounts may not be so airtight, possibly along the lines: "As long as the web works, your service is considered to still work."

Re:RumorsTry again. Hereis an interview with Richard Taylor, co-founder and head of Effects and Creatures at Weta Workshop, stating that, "Ben designed our female leads." Ben doesn't sound much like Kate.
And while Kate Rose is a costume designer, as far as I can tell, she has no affiliation with Weta, nor would a costume designer likely be brought to the table yet. This is still concept and developement. Eventually sketches like these en dup in the hands of the people that will have to make them a reality, and the arguing begins.

Re:Not "Good Software"
Doesn't the FSF deny people the right to copy and distribute software, unless they agree to the GPL?
No.
OK. So I can distribute linux binaries without distributing the source, then?
As long as there is copyright on software, there is a need for the GPL.
No, as long as there is copyright, there is a need for copyleft. The GPL is a half-decent incarnation of copyleft, but it denies people the right to copy annd distribute software without copying and distributing source code unlike other copyleft licenses, such as the QingPL or ShareAlike 1.0.

Just Business
I've had material on MP3.com for several years now. Never paid for the service, so I had less to lose than those that took the Gold Membership, etc. But I still don't understand the griping.
The era of free multimedia serving is over. There's just too much overhead to justify providing that much free bandwidth.
For those of you who bitching about MP3.com, just accept this unfortunate reality.
Who's been screwed? OK, maybe the folks that signed up for Gold Membership. But it seems like it's pointless to bitch about what's happened - it's all just business.
It's not the same as being ripped off by your producer [Beach Boys and countless others], or cheated out of payment by a venue after a performance [an ever-present risk in a business rife with unscrupulous people].
There's always an element of risk, whatever endeavour you undertake. There's no guarantee that a party with whom you have entered into a contract and paid money for future services will not go out of business, or sell out to another party. That's just a fact of life.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of free and low-cost music-hosting alternatives [sorry, I haven't checked ALL these links recently, but most should still be good. I am a lazy sod.]:

Verizon DSL TOS says you must agree...to them monitoring the settings on your machine, and them making changes (with your permission for the changes):
From Verizon TOS
14.5 Monitor of Network Performance. Verizon automatically measures and monitors network performance and the performance of your Internet connection and our network as part of this process. We also will access and record information about your computer's profile and settings and the installation of software we provide in order to provide customized technical support. No adjustments to your computer settings will be made without your permission. We do not share information collected for the purpose of network or computer performance monitoring or for providing customized technical support outside of Verizon or its authorized vendors, contractors and agents. You hereby consent to Verizon's monitoring of your Internet connection and network performance, and the access to and adjustment of your computer settings, as set forth above, as they relate to the Service or other services which we may offer from time to time.
Too scary for me...I never agreed and activated the service...took advantage of my 30day money-back guarantee also specified in that document. But then I found PdaNet for my Treo, and life is good.

It still could be great. (fyi)
ah, but you don't need your local company to provide dsl (well, you might depending on your area) all you need is their wires.. but check with other ISP's in the area. For instance, in quite a bit of NY state, Logical Net provides DSL service, and they simply use verizon's (or your local bell's) wiring (for a meager fee) and boom, you have lovely DSL, without even talking to your all powerful bellco Then, there's Roadrunner, and other cable modems, as you all know, but if you can't get ANY other high speed, there's always sattelite. (and if you can't get that, you should probally move somewhere that has power.
<Soapbox>
Any way about it, I have vonage, and it's a Wonderful thing.. it's cheaper than any other phone company.. (oops, did I say that?) umm.. base station land line telecommunications service, (IP or otherwise) you can hook up regular phones, answering machines, fax machines, anything with a phone jack! (non-vonage sponsored faq, and cheap plug for referrals) Not to mention you can keep your regular phone number, equipment, etc.. (FYI, if you use a refferal, you get an extra month free, instead of going directly to vonage
:) Where else can you get a true to life 800 number for a couple extra bux a month?</Soapbox>
ok.. I'm done now..
(yeah, I know, you already knew most of that anwyays...)

Re:Not exactly correct
Actually, you can run just about anything you want with a dynamically assigned IP address.
On many ISPs, yes, but a lot of people only have the option of getting broadband from one with an extremely restrictive AUP. The alternative with Charter is to purchase a business account! Unfortunately, Verizon's AUP is no better. Specifically, this section: "E. You may not use the DSL Service to host any type of server personal or commercial in nature."
This is rediculous IMHO. I'm getting forced into changing to Charter from my current ISP. I'm not looking forward to it.
With the exception of me occasionaly checking my e-mail via web interface, my website gets a massive 1 hit every 3 days. (At least that's what it was so far this month... and over half of those were just SE robots.) I also average 2-4 e-mails a day. When I checked with Charter via the phone, however, I was told that I absolutely could not run my mail and web server on their service without upgrading to a business account.

Re:Don't let mass transit die
I live in probably the last rural area in New Jersey. I personally wish that someone would clean up the cities to make them livable. I wouldn't mind living in the city, but I'm only 17 and not on my own yet, so I don't have that choice. You'd think that in a state with > 1000 people/mile^2 that we would have some sort of public transportation system. But no, we have none at all. You really do need a car to go anywhere.
But New Jersey is also one of the most corrupt states with the most apathetic population, probably due to the massive numbers of New Yorkers who live here but don't care because they work and play in NYC. Therefore, the politicians can break any laws they want and nobody will stand up to them.

Re:its all a waste of time
all this wireless internet business is overrated, so few people take advantage of it, look at the numbers from starbucks or McDs
You, my friend, are dead wrong. There are thounads of non-techies taking advantage of Wi-Fi access. They just don't want to get robbed a second time after paying 20 bucks for a latte*. They will chose to seek out free WiFi access when available.
I, for one, am having a ball using Verizon's free (for dsl and internet dialup customers) Wi-Fi service. The DSl bridges are in public payphones, so the the reception is great.
Check out the site.
* It's called a latte, because it costs a alote. ;) -
Re:Enact Linux
Copying unix source code is only one of the many things which is regulated by copyright law. Clearly RMS would like to severely change copyright law, especially with regard to software and software documentation, but it's also clear that he wouldn't want to eliminate it completely. The GPL, the GFDL, and the copyright of the GPL itself all impose restrictions beyond that which would be caused by the elimination of copyright. If RMS really believed in the elimination of copyright these licenses would all look more like this.

"Basa"
Interesting to see how the Vietnamese catfish issue has panned out.
Just to give you a little background, the catfish being farmed in Vietnam are in the family Pangasiidae, with the species most commonly farmed Pangasius sansitwongsi . The catfish farmed in the States are members of the family Ictaluridae. The U.S. farmers began feeling the competition a few years ago, and lobbied their local senator (the name escapes me). The senator tacked a rider onto some major bill, forcing all catfish imported from Vietnam to be labeled as "basa". To make things worse, only members of Ictaluridae may be called catfish, according to the rider. There are over 3000 species in the order Siluriformes, all of which are catfish. A prominent catfish ichthyologist even went to the Hill to argue that point, without any luck.
The U.S. has got to stop it's hypocritical treatment of other countries trade relations now, before matters get even more out of hand. Steel, bananas, and now computer chips and catfish are the first victims. What next?

Yeah... from verizon's access policy [http://www2.verizon.net/policies/agreement.asp] section 2.5.b You may connect multiple computers/devices within a single home or office location to your DSL modem and/or router to access the Service , but only through a single DSL account and a single IP address obtained from Verizon Online.

Re:Bad link
the link leads to an ad, not an article
I'm not sure what the link leads to. Under Phoenix, got an infinite loop of
GET http://www.slushfactory.com/content/EpuFukEpAFFjrI oYJF.php HTTP/1.0
GET http://www.slushfactory.com/takeoverAd.html?http:/ /www.slushfactory.com/content/EpuFukEpAFFjrIoYJF.p hp HTTP/1.0
GET http://mediamgr.ugo.com/html.ng/size=300x250&affil iate=slushfactory&channel=filmtv&subchannel=alsopl aying&Network=affiliates&rating=pg13 HTTP/1.0
Under Internet Explorer, it didn't appear to loop, but stuck at the takeoverAd.html page.
So I never saw the great creative efforts of these idiots, because they were more concerned about "managing" my web experience, sticking a cookie on my machine, or -- if takeoverAd is wahta I suspect it is -- capturing me on a "sticky" page where each time I hit the back button, I get a page that redirects me forward.
This problem isn't limted to these Picassos of comix art: I visted BMG.com today, on a tip from a friend, thinking I might buy a $160.00 set of Gilbert & Sullivan DVDs. The page looks lovely, dark and artsy, but there's no indication of home to search it or use it in any way -- unless it's via javascript and cookies, which I block. Net result: no $160.00 sale, BMG. But your site sure is cute.
I also spent over thirty minutes searching Verizon's site, trying to find tech support's number. Naturally, Verizon is too cool to actually list phone numbers; no, instead there are drop down lists, javascript and cgi and cookies -- again, I had to imcommodate myself to continue in a customer relationship I already have with Verizon. I am noe considering my otyer ISP options.
Beware being so cool nobody can understand you, or figure out how to tell you you're being an ass. -
When compared to NetZero...
Its people like you who pay 22.95 a month for AOL , when for about 8$ more you could find a low-speed DSL that blows AOL away
.No, it's people like me who go on $10/mo NetZero in a town where the cheapest Verizon DSL is $40/mo for the first year.

Re:American ./ers unite
I used to think that it was all about the votes -- you know, people come in, write on a peice of paper (or punch out a little hole). Then the papers were all gathered up and tallied.. whoever got the most votes wins. Right?
Welp, not true. Gore got more votes than Bush did. Bush's buddies in government elected him. It certainly wasn't the people of the United States.
Yes, it really is all about the Benjamins -

This is good news?...I have Verizon DSL and I'm happy that this announce is being made...but still...look at the acceptable use policy:
Infringement of Copyright, Patent, Trademark, Trade Secret, or Intellectual Property Right: Distribution and/or posting of copyrighted or the aforementioned infringements will not be tolerated. Verizon Online respects the intellectual property rights of third parties, including those granted under the US copyright laws, and the interests of its subscribers and content providers on the Internet. You may not store material on, or disseminate material over, Verizon Online's systems or servers in any manner that constitutes an infringement of third party intellectual property rights, including rights granted under the US copyright laws. In accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") and other applicable law, it is the policy of Verizon Online to terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the Service provided to any subscriber or account holder who is deemed to infringe third party intellectual property rights, including repeat infringers....*
Emphasis mine. So...I have mixed feelings.

To lose your negative karma, press redial.
IPs below a certain score don't get shown

Re:Verizon DSL is NOT THAT EVIL
I'm a Verizon DSL user. My brother and I just got off the phone with tech support. First they tried to convince us that hosting a web server was illegal (after we convinced them that we had seen the ToS which says DSL users are exempt); after about ten minutes of arguing that was changed to "We don't support that." Then they told us that they would not open port 80 for specific machines, and that they would not even tell us ANY details about other ports (like the mysterious 25). I hope to call back later and speak to someone a bit more helpful...
As for why we learned about the port closing from
/. long before we heard about it from verizon in a vaguely worded, hidden post, they told us that they didn't send an email because it only affects about 5% of their customers. They also won't notify us when they reopen port 80, however distant that may be. Furthermore, they claim that the vast majority of users who would receive such an email would not care. Still, if I were the average user I certainly would rather hear service/security updates I can ignore than miss ones that might be relevant. Conclusion: Verizon is at least approaching Evil, if not already there... please let me know if you've had any better experiences with tech support since the start of the filtering!

Re:Verizon DSL is NOT THAT EVIL
Ahem... go here check the system status where you are. East coast it says:
DSL Network
Posted Date: 8/6/01 10:18:41 PM CST
Status: Open
In an effort to limit the propagation of the Code Red internet worm across the Verizon internet services network, Verizon has placed filters on the network to protect its end users from being infected with the Code Red Internet Worms. These filters will not impede users ability to browse the internet but will prevent infected machines from scanning Verizon internet services network. Verizon is doing all we can to protect our end users from this internet worm. If you feel you may have been infected with this worm, please contact a virus/network security websites to learn about the latest patches and/or symptoms of this internet worm.
I'd also like to point out that if your machine really is really so open... then why is it that I can ping you... yet no web pages load? Could it be that maybe verizon is filtering incoming port 80??
I'm mad 'cause when I called to sign up and I told them I'd be running linux they said I couldn't and I did - so why I am being cut off when it is impossible for me to get infected with code red??? -
I read my TOS!
Direct quotes from the Verizon TOS:
Section 12, Limitations on Use and Warranties:12.3 You agree that your use of the Service and the Internet, without limitation, is your sole responsibility, is solely at your own risk and is subject to all applicable local, state, national and international laws and regulations.
Attachment B, part 3:You may not use the Service as follows:
... (q) to use your VIS account for the purpose of operating a server of any type, unless you are an DSL customer; ...I am a Verizon DSL customer. Therefore I can operate a server if I want. And 12.3 says that my use of the Internet is "without limitation" and "solely at my own risk". The way I see it, this means I should be able to run my own server on port 80 without Verizon being able to block it; I'm more than willing to take the risk of getting Apache infected with Code Red. And if I find I'm getting hammered by infected machines on the Verizon network, I'll get the IPs of the offending users and tell them to stop playing Solitaire and install the fscking patch.
I already sent Verizon tech support a message asking why they didn't announce this (at best I found a vague message on their site that didn't mention specific services being blocked) and asking if they can get me around it. They say they'll respond within 24 hours to any messages; I sent it at about noon EST yesterday, and it's 9 AM now, so they've only got about three hours left...

Re:Captain Obvious Rides Again
This has already been discussed here several times. My response from the last round can be found here.
That's actually my old website. The main one seems to be down.

Yes, but not for the reasons you think
Is Linus killing Linux? Yes. Is this because he's not devoted to Linux full-time or because he's overloaded or for the other sorts of reasons the article covers? No. He's killing Linux because part of a leader's job is to set a good example for others and Linus sets a very bad example. Linus has some very weird ideas about things like debuggers, real-time, enterprise systems, and so forth. He doesn't seem to be a strong believer in things like specs and regression tests and controlled releases. He's not very well read about OS theory and his distrust of ideas from the commercial world borders on paranoia, so a lot of inferior reinvented-wheel proposals get his approval.
Because of the extremely high regard in which many hold Linus, and perhaps rightly so, all of his habits both good and bad tend to be emulated by other developers around the world. When that leads to the widespread adoption of his bad habits, that's bad for Linux. I seriously think that Linux would be healthier if opinions contrary to Linus's own could be expressed freely without hordes of his worshippers acting like the Inquisition.
Linus could ameliorate this problem by recognizing the impact of everything he says and trying to ensure that the impact is a good one. He should be open about the limits of his own expertise, and not make such a habit of shouting down experts in areas where he himself is ill informed. He could actively discourage people from supporting technical viewpoints out of blind loyalty, and from treating dissenters as heretics. His failure to do these things, which are all part of a leader's role and responsibility, is what is killing Linux.
I have several essays providing fuller explanations of these views on my website, for those who are interested.
