Found several...
This project would be nothing if not for the clever marketing of linking this to the Raspberry Pi. Otherwise, it's just an overpriced, under-spec'd and under-featured monitor. With the switch to HDTV, every cheap little TV out there has HDMI inputs, and can incidentally also work as a TV:
19" HDTV under $100:

Optical Drive ... Why?
I can get a 32 GB flash drive for $15.
This:
- Holds more than a single layer Blu-Ray disc
- Has faster access than a x16 Blu-Ray drive
- Can be rewritten/reused many times
- Works on almost any computer with a USB port, no drive hardware requiredSo, optical drive

Re:I know most of you don't live where I do...
My point is, the northeast blackout proved just how unprepared most Americans are for a power outage. I understand the technical challenges of living on the 30th story of a building are much greater than for my house in the middle of no where, but there are some basic things you can do to function for a few days without power if need be.
IMHO, too few people know about CAMPING gear. Just think of it... crazy people VOLUNTARILY go off-grid, in extremely harsh conditions, yet get along quite well.
They have:
* good food ($100),
* plenty of clean water ($40),
* get hot showers ($10),
* have an ample supply of power $10,
* lots of light ($10),
* plenty of news and entertainment. ($20),
* modern conveniences ($30),etc., etc.
They even sleep comfortably in -30F degree weather (if you don't mind lugging around a punching bag).

Re:Easy solution
Just shoot a high power laser on a very short duration wherever this quality is found, and you'll burn out the CCD of any nearby digital camera.
It's claimed LED's will obscure your face; LED's can be placed in a base ball cap
The Anonymous Guide to Hiding From Facial Recognition, or the Long Arm of the Law (shows the use of a laser pointer)
http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/08/the-anonymous-guide-to-hiding-from-facial-recognition-or-the-long-arm-of-the-law/So I bought a LED cap at a gun shop of all places for $12.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Huntworth-Men-s-Lighted-Baseball-Cap-Oak-Tree/15111206I've had it for a month now and haven't tested it to see if it block out my web cam or if I'll need to replace the LED's with IR LED's (I'm sure I will)
but I have a base, all the hard work is done. -
Re:Where is your local kidney bean leaf supplier?
Use the natural replication process, Genius.
You can buy dried kidney beans at many food stores. Just buy a pound of them, and then plant them in a planter box, plastic cups, whatever. Beans are notoriously easy to sprout and grow. Just grow the beans, and pick the leaves in a conservative fashion (a few leaves per plant, many plants), then lay them out on the floor at night, rough side up. The bugs get ensnared in the tiny hairs and barbs on the bottoms of the leaves, and you just sweep the leaves up and dispose of the bastards.
(Hint: you can sprout them under standard fluorescent lighting, in plastic cups filled with standard potting soil. If you live in NewYork, ask the building manager if you can grow the beans on the roof, after stating what they are for. You don't need much space at all for them really.)
As far as I know, artificial material science has not been able to even come close to the effectiveness of kidneybean leaves. Kidney bean leaves are MURDER on bedbugs.

Re:Price Adjustment
So the more intellectual question is what is next if the surface fails?
It will, it's just a matter of time before your question is answered.
Personally I kind of got excited when it came out as Apple has a monopoly on the tablet market since they banned Samsung and other droid tablets out of the market here in the US for using icons and rounded corners.
They aren't banned. Go to Best Buy, you'll see a bunch of them. Or look here.

Re:Read the contract.
Its $45 a month for "unlimited" talk text and net, but the net you can feel them slow you down when you hit between 2-3GB,depending on how congested their network is at the time, which for the price? I REALLY don't give a shit because like I said I have my netbook and desktop for hardcore surfing, the Droid phone is just for little things like looking up facts when I'm out and about. Now if you want the latest and greatest phone its gonna cost you because there is no subsidies on the phones, but all I cared about is does it talk, text, and look up little things like what is showing at the multiplex well so I got A refurb Galaxy Precedent and for what i want a smartphone for it works great,I may look into Cyanogen mod down the line, but if it ain't broke?
And as for the one that says they can still "track" you? dude they don't give a rat's ass what you put in the checkbox,I have a smartass friend that puts down he is a cheerleader from Dallas, named Debbie of course, and you can buy the phones and the cards either online or just go into the store and pay cash, they REALLY don't give a shit.

Re:impediments to access?
Rubbish. If the movie industries continue to not provide access because of no-DRM then they'll continue to suffer piracy and have physical media and cinema as their only distribution methods instead.
Fully half of all prime time Internet download traffic in the states was a licensed Netflix stream before Netflix offered a streaming-only service. Walmart.com stocks 132 internet-enabled HDTVs.
It has reached the point where your cable service will stream to every media player in your home.
someone else will gladly come and take their place because there are many other film studios across the globe other than Hollywood
The UK has been successful in the US market and now and again the Canadians.
Japan has a niche market in animation. But as a significanr cultural export the Hollywood product has no peer.

"Google Play Music All Access"
Wonder how long "Google Play Music All Access" will last? Compared to PlaysForSure (Microsoft), Zune Music Pass (Microsoft), and WalMart Music Download Service. Just having a big company behind it is no guarantee of success. Google has never had a successful consumer product that people had to pay for.

The Problem with chromebooks.
I have a Samsung Chromebook and frankly, they are great for someone that just wants to check email and the web without worrying about viruses or tablet browser issues (such as flash or mobile site issues) but there are some things that make them a near impossible sell to people such as seniors.
1) Printing. I'd have sold 100+ chromebooks by now if they could plug in a USB printer and print out of the box. Google Cloud Print simply doesn't cut it here. Without a Cloud enabled printer, you're still tied to a PC.
2) Price. Try selling someone who is not computer savvy a $250 web browser. Seriously try it. In fact. Here's your two laptops. (I'll save your sanity and not dare mention the Chromebook Pixel).
HP Windows 8 Notebook
HP ChromebookI guess you could start with the chromebook is going to be faster with no viruses, but they're going to ask you about printing, and if it plays their old games, ETC...

Re:Is this the point in time..
Yes, but did you install CentOS for her? I am willing to bet that she didn't go build her own computer or buy one from the store, download the CentOS iso images or do a network install by herself. It's not like you can just go down to Walmart and pick up a computer running Linux.
Nor Best Buy
I know computers have sold in the past with Linux preinstalled, but I don't think any major retailer carried them.
If there are non-technical people using Linux, it is most likely because they have a technical person who installed it for them, and supports them.

An even lower-cost option with T-Mobile
The base plan T-Mobile is touting is $50 per month for unlimited everything (500 MB data at 4G speed).
Wal-Mart sells a T-Mobile plan for $30 per month for unlimited text and data (5 GB data at 4G speed). The catch is that the plan has only 100 minutes of voice. But if you are willing to use Google Voice with Groove IP, you can use your data to talk. I have this setup and love it! Better still, if you're in WiFi range, you can stretch your WiFi even farther.

Re:Install Windows XP
You are right that the general public isn't comfortable using Linux. Unfortunately, you falsely imply that they are comfortable using Windows. The vast majority of people who would be in a position to go to a library or Non-Profit don't know the difference....
This --- to put it charitably --- is fantasy.
The MSDOS and Windows eco-system is 31 years old.
The software used in-house by the library or NPO will almost certainly have been built within that system.
MS Office is a given --- but there are countless other examples, some of them very arcane and unexpected --- and you are not employable even as a senior volunteer unless you are comfortable with the Windows OS and Windows software.
There isn't a public school, library, community college, state employment service or senior center within 75 miles of here that hasn't offered introductory courses or more advanced training in Windows and MS Office, and some of these programs are twenty years old now.
The message --- and it comes across loud and clear to anyone listening --- is that employers demand and expect that you will have these skills.
If you looking at something for home use, the refurbished Windows 7 desktop with free in-store pickup starts at $160 at Walmart.com. Machines in the class will run Office 365 and pretty much everything available in FOSS for Windows without the least bit of trouble, along with 500 or so dirt-cheap games from Gog,com.

Re:RFP: Exercise bands
Just about any resistance bands are workable. Grab any of the hundreds of options like this (first hit at walmart.com) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-Long-Resistance-Tube/12167856
At an absolute minimum you can sit on it, grab the handles and stretch. I just loop the handles over the armrests on my chair and am quite capable of forgetting its there for months at a time.

If they sell a $200 USD laptop I'll buy it
I'm not impressed with Chromebook sales considering fairly similar PC laptop models at that price point also sell like hotcakes. I bought an Acer Aspire One 725-0687 from Walmart for under $200 USD and it works fine in Debian unstable. That sounds like a better price than say 199 British pounds. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Red-11.6-AO725-0687-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-Dual-Core-C-70-Accelerated-Processor-and-Windows-8-Operating-System/21853455 I did have to swap out the hard drive for an SSD but I would have had to have done that with an Acer Chromebook as well. And unlike an Acer Chromebook, I would not have had to have been forced to use Ubuntu 12.04 or whatever has been hacked to work on the Chromebook, but instead I can use any Linux distribution I want once I set the bios to legacy bios. Apparently Walmart can sell whatever number of $200 11.6 inch laptops they want, just like Google can sell however many sub $250 USD Chromebooks they want. The question of course is whether the respective companies feel like keeping these products in stock, which is not always the case for either.
-
Re:The pricing is still a bit ridiculousYes - the 128GB version is $100 more than the 64 GB version - a difference of 64 GB - but a 64 GB SD card is less than $50.
The lack of a MicroSD slot on the Apple products is a complete racket.

Re:T-mobile
The Wal-Mart T-Mobile Unlimited text and Web plan is $30 per month. It's limited to only 100 minutes of voice...but I use Groove IP with Google Voice to use the data for voice calls...so that $30 per months buys me unlimited voice, text, and data.

The cheap humidistats from Wal-Mart?
Is it one of these things?
I bought four of them a few years ago. They don't go below 16%. They also differ in their opinions of the humidity by as much as 20%, even when they're all sitting right next to each other. Indeed, one had to be placed in incredibly moist air, otherwise it never displayed anything other than 16%.

What with Christmas and all the SC-72MID is out of stock just about everywhere. Here is a link to an almost equivalent product that can still be had in case you're ready to upgrade your understanding of what's available for $79 delivered. I haven't tried this one, but it's likely good. It has the advantage that it can be had.

Re:Cooling is the issue
You're talking about those floodlight-shaped CFLs, right? Those damn things take forever to warm up (the light starts near the base and takes a few seconds to reach the tip) but I've found putting regular instant-on CFLS in those fixtures works just as well. Regular CFLS usually start >50% brightness and warm up much faster.
No I'm not. Sure Walmart has dimmable floodlight CFLs but they also have regular dimmable CFLs. GE CFL 26wt Dimmable Spiral - 3 bulbs $15.44. They have a bunch more too.

cost of CFL
There is virtually no selection of dimmable CFL, the few that exist are incredibly expensive
- GE CFL 26wt Dimmable Spiral - 3 bulbs $15.44. Just over $5 a bulb.
- Earthmate 27W Dimmable Spiral 2700K Bulb, 6pc $71.94 $12 bulb.
- Bulbrite Industries 13W Energy Wiser Dimmable Compact Fluorescent Coil in Warm White (Set of 3) $35.97. $12 a bulb.
- Feit ESL23T/DM/65 23 Watt Daylight Dimmable Twist Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb $13.87. $13.87 for one bulb.
- Bulbrite Industries 40W 3000K Dimmable Rapid Start Compact Fluorescent 4-Pin Long Twin Tube in Soft White (Set of 2) $13.72. $6.81 a bulb.

CFL sucks. We're better off with incandescent in the meantime.
I've used CFLs for more than 20 years and have not had a problem with them. That's not entirely true, I have had problems with them. In photography, photos on film show color casting with florescent bulbs, and with incandescent bulbs as well. The first CFL I bought I paid $20 for, and over the next 15 years it paid it's cost back in avoided cost. That is in energy not used and in not having to replace incandescent bulbs. I wonder if you enjoy wasting money.

I think that's enough examples to show there are inexpensive dimmable CFL bulbs. However Walmart has more.

Re:the article is worth what you pay for it
Unfortunately, the adapter to make it SATA brings the price up to almost $40.

Re:What is the point?
A PS3 controller is $40, which is more than half the price of buying those Android dongles you hook up to the TV. So while it would work, it gets quite expensive. For an android dongle and a PS3 controller, you could pay $120. Or you could just spend the extra $30 and get an xBox 360 for $150

Re:Rich man's game now
It wasn't offered to any employees when I worked there. If one is offered now, it wasn't historically so.
My mom worked in the arts and crafts dept at the local walmart part time from '89 or '90 when us kids were in high school until she retired in '11. As my dad said, she probably spent more than she earned. That's the price of having a job in your hobby, you spend 40 hours a week salivating about buying everything you see.

In contrast to the grandparent post, the walmart corporate site claims at least the entire produce aisle is also 10% off for employees. Donno about dry goods grocery items.
This has historically been a whine from non-employees about the "cool gift of the year" for literally decades. Before ebay existed the whine was classified ads. Buy twenty tickle me elmo dolls for 10% off because your coworker hides the shipping box in the back room, then sell it in the classifieds for twice list price = profit... My mom never did this but she heard a lot about it. I'm sure the whining now would be about ipad sales or nintendo wii-u or whatever is cool this year.

Re:$199 is pretty hard to beat
You really think switching to "ChromeBook" there won't be any learning-curve, and the applications you know and love will ALL work?
Honestly, as vague as your requirements are, I don't see why one of (eg.) Walmart's several $80 7" Android 4.0 ICS (capacitive screen) tablets won't work for you just as well:

Re:Search for spherical neodymium magnets...
I'm confused about the whole thing. I saw a reference to someone pointing out that trampolines kill and send 100,000 kids to the hospital every year when Zen Magnets received a "stop sell" order, the first for a product without a single reported injury. But the trampoline makers are paying big bucks to the government to not change safety standards since ones like: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Springfree-12-Round-Trampoline-with-Safety-Enclosure/12323460 have become available. Note, if you fall oddly and land on the "frame" head first, you should, based on the safety measures, walk away from that 90+% of the time. It's below 10% for a regular trampoline and is more likely to kill you on a regular trampoline than give you any injury at all on the newer/safer ones.
But magnets use "invisible" force (magic) to do stuff, so we can ban them, but trampolines have been killing and maiming for years, so we are used to them. It all comes back to the conservative nature of people (not political, but comfort). People would rather have the evil they know than good (not just the evil they don't know, but actual good). As for me, I bought a trampoline for the kids that has no metal contact points. I also bought Zen Magnets and play with them with the 2 and 5 year olds all the time, but with an eye for the possibility of death, however remote, just as we cross the street when appropriate, even with the possibility of death. -
