Re:Why is this a "blog"?
Well, it was originally named Battletorrent, which was less buzzwordy, but obviously more confrontational. We decided to rename it Blogtorrent not because it *was* a blog (although you could use it to have an all-video blog), but rather because it was *built for* blogs.
A site like waxy.org has waxy.org/bt. But that's too complicated for most people to set up on their own.

Re:I vote poor quality
Just because the record companies choose to put out crap isn't really a reason to dislike the entire genre.
Maybe you meant to say 90% of the commercial hip-hop/rap that you've heard doesn't appeal to you?
Just for fun, try this--appears to not be commerical:

Companies ran by "science-oriented people".

Consider the fates of companies ran by "intelligent, science-oriented people" like ArsDigita (account #1, account #2) and The MIT Blackjack Team.

Re:Still Don't like itReasons to buy the mini:
- You think the iPod is too big, and the mini is just right
- 4 gigs of music at 192 kbps gives you ~2 days of continuous music. (Calculated here.) That's enough to last a week or so, and with firewire transfer speeds, changing playlists isn't that big of a deal
- You want the newest, coolest thing
- You're an Apple fan-kid

Re:Is There an Easy Way to Window Shop at I-Tunes?
This page has a bit of info about the way the iTMS is set up, and possibly some ways to search it without using iTunes.

Wonderful...
Now university students can download lecture notes that suddenly cutoff after a few pages, and repeat over and over again. Or they will download what they think is course materials, only to find it is just a file that repeatedly says "what the fuck do you think you're doing?"

Re:More Google ...
Amusingly enough, the Google Calculator has read Douglas Adams.
It also knows smoots.
More fun here and here and here. -
Re:Not going to happen.
Alledgedly the video was stolen out of a filing cabnet at school. The "friends" conspired to hide the fact they stole it. Then even tried to scheme to have the iPod and money that was raised for him be sent to a different address, so they could keep it. Some friends, huh? Actually in a phone interview when asked "I guess it wasn't a friend who did this, more of an enemy?" He replied, "More or less. It was someone I knew.". He should sue them, and I still want to see him in Ep. III.

Re:Petition
Read all about it on waxy.org. They managed to raise a surprisngly large amount of money for the kid (something like 3grand). Pretty interesting. They even got in contact with the kid.

That's not all...
The guys at waxy.org also used donations from the public to buy the guy a 30G iPOD and $3600CDN worth of Future Shop gift certificates.

Hello, Troll.
"I haven't seen the video, so I can't comment on how stupid he looks on it, but that is beside the point. "
You seem to forget thi interview, and the followup where he had enough money donated to him by Star Wars fans to buy several iPods.
You probably missed that while you were busy not watching the video, and making snap posts to /. without all the facts.
Chances are, either his parents are pushing him to be greedy, or he has been drawn to the dark side by the lure of money. -
Greedy Star Wars Kid!
-
He forgot to say thank you
Ghyslain/Star-Wars-Kid forgot to say thank you for the $3250 he received from the Internet community. I wonder whether it's him or his parents pushing for the lawsuit...

Re:Let them start with the **AA sites
Heh... defacing RIAA?
Not too dificult, considering that until recently their administration page was unpassworded! [cache]
Unfortunately, someone posted it to Slashdot, FARK, etc. instead of keeping it secret so devious tricks could be done.
D'oh. -
Re:Help Pay back His Savings
My question here is why didn't he let the RIAA take him to court. He could represent himself and nullify any expenses on an attorney. Let them drag the case on for next to forever, all the while transfering his savings into a relatives name, then as quickly as it all started file for bankruptcy and give the RIAA a big finger and a nice knowing you letter. Seriously, it seems like he just layed down and took it from these guys.
Maybe he should call on the kid from the Star Wars video and get him help to raise some money. Waxy.org raised $3,254.09 for the kid, even though he got his panties all in wad and is suing over the video now. But I guess thats life in the lawsuit happy society in which we live. -
Ask Slashdot:
Dear Slashdot,
I'm a 15-year old Canadian Kid and I had a video of me doing my Darth Maul moves posted on the internet.
Allthough that actually sucked, it did get me lot's of dosh.
Any idea's to move the whole franchise to a higher level? -
Re:I think I'll release...
What amazes me is how much commentary this video contains about adolescent life.
The remixed version is hilarious (as pointed out ad naseum) but take a look at the unedited cut. The last few frames are from the next event recorded on the tape - the school basketball game. Those players completely dwarf the Star Wars Kid.
Juxtaposed with this geeky boy pretending to be a fearsome martial arts master says a lot about what life is like in highschool. If you're not the fastest, strongest, most athletic than what could you have to offer the community? The basketball game was carefully recorded - it's supposed to be seen again. With that to compete with how can anyone be surprised at this boy's fantasy? It's just a reminder of what a strange set of priorities society emphasizes to it's youth.
Now this is quite an extrapolation on my part but I think a just one - and all this was serendipitously caught on tape! I, for one, am glad the Star Wars Kid will be walking away from the experience with more than a little coin for his anguish.

In case it gets slashdotted.Slashback: GSM, Buffy, Wobble

from the donuts-kimbap-and-jalapeno-chow-chow dept.
Slashback tonight brings you updates on the future of Iraq's cellular infrastructure, the real reason Buffy is departing, Intuit and Macrovision, and more. Read on below for the details.
Macrovision, everyone's favorite killjoy.
byteCoder writes "Apparently Macrovision marketing is trying to put a good spin on Intuit's plan to eliminate the use of Macrovision's DRM software for pre-paid copies of TurboTax (as discussed last week here). This reminds me of the classic Monty Python line: "I'm not dead yet!""That's got to be some spin -- An anonymous reader points to Eric Hellweg's Tech Investor on CNN, which suggests that the backlash which triggered Intuit's copy-protection reversal may have cost the company $100 million.
Can I use my Go Phone there?
An anonymous reader writes ""In a follow-up to the Slashdot article 'CDMA vs GSM in Post-war Iraq,' The Reg has a story about how MCI has won the contract to rebuild the mobile phone system with GSM. This is a good thing for the people of Iraq that GSM is being used, GSM is the world standard and several U.S. companies (AT&T for one) are switching to GSM."Adding Money to Insult.
Neophytus writes "Remember the 'Star Wars Kid' that waxy.org found a couple of weeks ago? Well after over a million downloads the guy has been found. His name is Ghyslain, a 15-year-old tenth grader living in Quebec. Jish contacted him and got a brief, but interesting, interview."No unlimited copy privileges in jail.
the-dude-man writes "As reported here A 19-year-old pleaded guilty to costing DirectTV for leaking information about the secrets of DirectTV's most advanced anti-piracy technology to hacker websites. As part of the plea deal, Serebryany admitted to copying and distributing 800 megabytes of scanned documents from DirecTV, costing the company $68,000 in investigatory costs. Both sides stipulated to sentencing factors that carry six months to a year in prison under federal guidelines -- assuming no prior convictions. The sentencing court can depart from the guidelines only if the judge finds that the proposed sentence doesn't adequately reflect the facts of the case. According to court records affidavit, Serebryany's adventures began when he found himself with access to some of DirecTV's most coveted technological secrets while working for his uncle at a document imaging company at the office of a Los Angeles law firm, Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue. The firm was representing the satellite TV company in a lawsuit against NDS, the makers of the smart cards DirecTV uses to control access to its signal."For every 11 discontented customers, there's one of these happy oddballs!

Come on guys, pitch in and buy this kid an iPod and other stuff for his efforts! What a star!

Re:Huh?
At least I'm not reading Ain't It Cool News or videotaping myself waving a shower rod in crazy motions.
Dude, that guy is getting hooked up for it. If it makes you feel better I didn't like Reloaded, nor most of the X-Files episodes I've seen. I think that most movies and shows fall short of good writing. The only case I've seen where the movie was better than the book is in the case of Forrest Gump... -

Uh, I just checked, and he is. Thanks Waxy!

Canadian jedi!
And he is one of them:
Star Wars Kid
Disclaimer: I am Canadian too. The guy is a "friend" of my brother in law. I'm posting this here for humorous reasons only (that makes sense? ;) No bad feelings involved.
Now laugh on. :)
(PS. I checked "No Karma Bonus" so moderate this post any way you see fit, I just don't want to gain Karma at the expense of this guy. I personnaly don't think it's off-topic.) -

Re:image.google.com Babes
In the search for Babes, I find that this site works much better.
No barnyard animals and no dead baseball players, AFAIK. Of course on the down side, most of them are wearing clothes, which doesn't seem to appeal to everyone.
Am I The Bomb? is also a good place to go hunting for babes. -
Re:Simple
Yup. Here's a breakdown of Hot-or-Not by scores. The notes at the bottom of the page indicate Geocities and Ofoto have attempted to block requests from the site. Can't blame 'em really.
