Re:Your reasoning is spot on...
Having correctly pointed out that US foreign policy has caused misery, suffering and death to millions elsewhere in the world, you seem horrified that a couple of those people are ready to give as good as they get.
By this logic, it is perfectly acceptable for the US to take the baton back and erase Afghanistan. We and the Taliban have agreed to disagree about this tragedy. From Yahoo news:
The Taliban's secretive leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, broke his silence Friday by insisting neither bin Laden nor Afghanistan (news - web sites) was capable of planning such sophisticated operations.
``Training of pilots is the work of a running government,'' he said in a statement read by his ambassador to neighboring Pakistan in Islamabad. ``Osama has no pilots, and where did he train them? In Afghanistan there is no such possibility for the training.''
But significantly, the statement by the Taliban's leader -- who rarely gives interviews, has never been filmed or photographed and has met just two non-Muslims in his entire life -- failed to condemn the U.S. attacks or even sympathize with relatives of the victims.
The Taliban are liars, and very, very stupid for thinking anyone believes them. We carry the bigger stick, and we disagree with the policy of destroying the WTC and killing thousands of innocents as a way to make a point. Therefore, we are justified in nuking them out of existance--because we can.
Actually, maybe erasing every one of these ideoligical bastards isn't such a bad idea. -
Microsoft Donation
Whatever folks think of Microsoft, they have donated $5 million in cash and $5 in software, including consulting services to relief groups and government agencies.
Reuters articles is here. -
The need for offsite backup
As everyone knows by know, Morgan Stanley Dean Whitter occupied roughly 10% of the WTC, with some 3500 employees. There's a good article on Yahoo this morning about their offsite back strategy, and how it enabled them to start working again almost immediately.

Microsoft Relief Effort
This story says: SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) said on Thursday it is giving $5 million in cash and $5 million in software and services to help relief groups and government agencies deal with the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites). The cash would go to the September 11 Fund set up by the United Way of New York and The New York Community Trust, Microsoft President Rick Belluzzo told employees in a memo made available to Reuters. The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon -- the U.S. military command center -- were hit by hijacked commercial airliners on Tuesday, leaving thousands of people believed dead. Microsoft, which makes the Windows computer operating system, also encouraged its 44,000 employees to make personal donations, for which the software giant would make matching donations of up to $12,000 per year, Belluzzo said. The Redmond, Washington-based company was also working with local blood banks to organize a campus blood drive soon, he said. Microsoft was assembling response teams to help customers in New York and at the Pentagon rebuild their computer networks, Belluzzo said. With a cash pile of about $31 billion, Microsoft is one of the richest corporations in the world. It donates tens of millions of dollars in cash, software and services each year to help charities and nonprofit and relief organizations

Re:speculation
I think they should NOT rebuild the towers, but instead make the site a National Memorial in the style of Oklahoma City. If possible fragments of the building should be preserved as a memorial to those who have died. The location, including subway stations and so on, should continue to be called World Trade Center, in their honor. That way we will never forget.

Almost concrete proof of Bin Ladin Involvement...
Over at yahoo news there is a story that states that the terrorists on the flight rosters were names of members of Bin Ladin's terrorist group...check it out for yourself:

Palestinians rejoice
Shocking images from Reuters. In light of this kind of behavior, I think we should really start to reassess out relationship with the Palestinian people. It is now clear that our only allies in the Mid-East are the Israelis, who, in stark contrast, announced a national day of mourning. The flags over the Israeli parliament are lowered. I'd really like to see if the Palestinians, Lebanese or Syrians have made the same gesture. -

Re:visit a mosqueThat said, I know enough to know that it is ONLY the most radical and a minority of Islamics who preach violence. Most, if not all, condemn such CSCB terrorist acts.
Here in the US, you would be correct. But not everywhere. Take a look at this photo from the yahoo photo service (yimg.com is yahoo images)
Remember that Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would carry out an "unprecedented attack on U.S. interests for its support of Israel"
Also, the editor of London-based al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper said Islamic fundamentalists led by bin Laden were 'almost certainly' behind the attack of the World Trade Center in New York.
If the perptrators are Muslim, that doesn't mean that all Muslims are to blame.

Massive Attacks Destroy World Trade Center, Hit Pentagon

Audio/Video World Trade Center Hit By Planes (Reuters)By Alan Elsner, National Correspondent
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three hijacked planes crashed into major U.S. landmarks on Tuesday, destroying both of New York's mighty twin towers, hitting the Pentagon (news - web sites) in Washington and plunging the United States into unprecedented chaos and panic.
Loss of life was expected to be catastrophic from the collapse of the giant towers of the World Trade Center where many thousands of people work. The two enormous edifices both fell in a huge cloud of smoke and fire two hours after the initial impacts.
New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (news - web sites) said there had been a ''tremendous number of lives lost'' in the attacks on his city.
Another plane crashed near Pittsburgh. It was not clear if this was another attempted hijacking.
Hospitals in New York were overwhelmed with patients as a massive cloud billowed into the blue skies over Manhattan where the city skyline had been dramatically and permanently altered.
``Hundreds of people are burned from head to toe,'' said Dr. Steven Stern at St. Vincent's Hospital in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of lower Manhattan.
``The whole of lower Manhattan is coated in half an inch of dust,'' Reuters reporter Daniel Sternoff said.
BUSH CUTS SHORT VISIT
President Bush (news - web sites) cut short a visit to Florida and rushed back to Washington to face the greatest crisis of his young presidency.
He called the deliberate aerial assaults an ``apparent terrorist attack'', and ordered a full-scale investigation. Early speculation about the source of the attack centered on Saudi-born guerrilla leader Osama Bin-Laden.
It was the most dramatic and deadly attack on the U.S. mainland in modern history. The attacks forced the evacuation of all government buildings in Washington, including the White House and other tall buildings around the country, cut cell phone communications on the East Coast and grounded all commercial planes in the United States.
Early reports said all three planes used in the attacks were hijacked, one of them from Boston and one from Washington. It was not immediately known who flew the planes and what happened to them.
The day of horror began around 9 a.m. in New York when the first plane plowed into the south tower of New York's World Trade Center, as thousands of workers were streaming into the building to begin their day.
It opened a huge hole near the top of the building. Two hours later, the whole building in which thousands of people collapsed on itself in a huge cloud of smoke and fire.
TV stations caught the second plane plowing into the second of the twin towers, exploding in a fire ball a few minutes after the first impact. That building caved in about an hour after the first.
Shortly afterward, a third plane crashed into or near the Pentagon in Washington, throwing people off their feet inside the building and setting off a massive fire.

i built a system like what you were describing
about one year ago. i set two limitations to the design of my "lan party computer"
1. it must use standard components (to make it easier to find parts to buy)
2. it must be cheap (at least cheaper than a comparable laptop)
this is a list of components that i used to build the system.
i updated parts of the list to reflect what components i would buy if i was going to build it today.
case mini tower $60
monitor 14" lcd $600
motherboard micro atx $100
processor P3 800Mhz 100FSB $160
ram 256MBpc100SDRAM $100
video Geforce2GTS64MB $195
keyboard mini-keyboard $40
mouse cordless optical $70
hard drive 40GB ide $100
cd-rom drive Plextor16/10/40A $250
floppy 1.44MB Generic $10
sound card SB Live Value $40
network card netgear FA310TX $20
cat5 cable 14 feet $20
headphones koss td61 $20
carry strap GearGrip Pro $35
other stuff:
cable bag a small, strong bag to attach to the side of the case to hold all the cables
power cable with 3 outlets that have 3 prongs each to accommodate the power cables for your system and monitor
i attached the lcd monitor to one side of the case and the cable bag to the other side. i put all the cables attached to the computer inside the bag to get them out of the way. then, when i went to a lan party i would only have to take one power cable, one network cable, the mini-keyboard, cordless mouse, and headphones out of the cable bag. everything was already connected at the back of the computer so there was no onsite setup involved.
i also screwed a piece of plexiglass onto the lcd monitor to protect the screen. (yes it was stupid to drill holes into a monitor that i just spent $900 on at that time, but it worked)
i had a lot of fun with that computer. i even dropped it down a flight of stairs once and the case was bent and all the pci cards popped out of their sockets. i put it back together and it worked fine.
the only downside to building this system was that it weighed about 30lbs. although if you spent more money on a lunchbox case with integrated lcd it would still weigh a lot.
unfortunately i never took any pictures of it for posterity and i ended up dismantling it for parts about 6 months ago, but i'm sure you get the idea.

Re:BluedemonX>I used to use Tactical Neural Implant, which is the title of a phenomenal Front Line Assembly album. [but got tired of it being shortened to Tac or TNI, so I switched...]
And on another "tack" - I leeched my nick shamessly from Gary Clail's "Tackhead Sound System".
For those who haven't heard of Tackhead, they were a late-80s industrial group - their musical style is almost impossible to describe - imagine a really weird blend of heavy bass and dub-like riffs, heavily processed, and then overlaid with multiple layers of samples from military/religious/political figures. Probably responsible for the start of the whole "sampling music" genre.
Their influence as individuals was far greater than their influence as a band per se - the names of the four main members (Keith LeBlanc, Skip McDonald, Adrian Sherwood, and Doug Wimbish) seem to crop up just about everywhere in music from about 1980 through 1990 in a range of styles from old-school rap (e.g. Grandmaster Flash), to funk/dub (George Clinton), to jazz (BB King, Miles Davis), to pop/retro/industrial (Annie Lennox, Depeche Mode, NIN).
The mix of solid beats and heavy sampling, plus some seriously geeky artwork served as inspiration for many a late-night assembly-coding run.
I recently paid a bit of homage by doing the obligatory boot logo thing and "rebranded" my hacked I-Opener in the same vein. After all - what would be a more appropriate name than "Tackhead Sound System" for a project that involves hacking a 6.4G MP3 boombox out of spare parts? (As long as I don't have to power up my I-Opener at an airport. My boot logo might be a little more imposing than it should be
;-)Recommended tracks: Mind at the End of the Tether, and What's My Mission Now?. Y'all know where to find MP3s.
Finally, if you liked those two tracks, the "Power, Inc." series (3 CDs released in the late '90s) is highly recommended. (Feel free to buy the original CDs - I believe Keith LeBlanc released these on his own label, so he might be getting more than the usual $1/CD when you buy 'em.

Re:The menu screen sez...
That image is the same image that is always used to denote a color Palm. If you go to Palm's web site you'll see photo's of the IIIc devices all with that screen on them.
Frankly I suspect something is wrong with the color screen. Every electronics store around here has demo units on display for all the other palm versions and even a few WinCE devices. But the IIIc is always a mock-up with that screen shot glued on.
If you're really interested a slightly better version of that shot is here. -
Bill Gates like Big Men for protectors
PLEASE READ WHOLE THING NOT JUST FIRST PARAGRAGH
I do not mean that Bill Gates likes big boys in any sexual way but I think that he is drawn to bigger people as his protector. I realize that Gates is not a huge guy but his better friends are monsters, Allan and Balmer.
Perhaps, Gates sees Microsoft headed into trouble and feels that the bigger Balmer would be better at defending Microsoft. If I did better at pysch I could go on.
