Re: By the numbers
What new technology? Do you even know what company is the largest manufacturer of EVs??? Why aren't you investing in them? Musk is all about ego. That is why all those rich tech guys are building rocket companies.
Because its very likely that EV maker in China is lying. Also, people in other countries actually want Tesla's cars. And that EV maker doesn't make their own battery manufacturing either which is really why Tesla has such a high stock price. And Tesla will be the largest EV maker in the world in a couple of quarters anyway.

If you want to increase income taxes to pay for roads and public transportation, be my guest. In the meantime, the poor and working class are still unquestionably better off with those dollars being spent, no matter the source.

Even today Skylake is still the newest and fastest architecture Intel has. Kaby Lake is Skylake with upgraded process and slightly upgraded GPU. Coffeelake is Skylake-E and thus with slightly higher core count.

Encrypted verified paper ballots
This is a presentation given by a google engineer about using encryption to verify paper ballot elections:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...I highly recommend watching because it's in depth but also tackles general election security. I don't know that this can be applied to electronic voting though.

How is this any different than a data center of the same scale? I'm not even sure it has a higher bisection bandwidth.
Okay—I am sure it will have way lower latency between nodes at any equivalent bandwidth tier. But unless you're planning to aggressively exploit that, it's just your garden variety datacenter make more expensive and less flexible.

Re:In a related story
The important part was:
and access to all of your purchased apps
That may or may not work, on that particular version. Yes, it's that bad.
Apple does require the code and the device to be registered with them for non Apple Store based loading unless you're into jail-breaking.
Can you provide a link to more details regarding that program? As an iOS developer, myself, this conversation is truly the first I'm hearing of it.
It's part of the private beta program. You can register 'x' devices. It used to be 50, I think, and has now been upped to 200/500. I don't recall. There are other limitations and shortcomings to using that route. The VPP you mentioned is a way to run private Apple Store provided enterprise apps. That's a different solution.
MacOS (formerly OS X) is an Apple product, which might be why one may expect the genius bar to support it.
And quite clearly is not purchasable, nor Apple Care supported. The hardware, however, is.
But it's fully relevant in a discussion regarding vendor lock-in. You say using an Apple keyboard is a workaround, I say it doesn't get you support (even though MacOS is and Apple product and, according to you, used legally by way of attaching an Apple keyboard), and you don't seem to be able to refute that. Therefore, the only way to ensure that your MacOS installation works, and continues working, is to buy Apple hardware above and beyond simply a keyboard. You're locked in to buying one vendor's hardware in order to receive support for their software. That's vendor lock-in, my friend.
If you want support, yes.
The Thinkpads were originally spec'd to gov standards, IIRC. They definitely were the workhorses of their time. They were also heavy. Slow. Big. And expensive! Let's be honest. I had 3 between 2000 and 2014. My MBPs beat them handily in a large number of categories including portability.
It's almost as though you don't realize they still exist... and have gotten thinner and lighter, while still retaining that durability. Don't just take my word for it. They're no more expensive than (functionally) equivalent Apple products, but much more durable which, well, if you use your portable devices as portable devices in the real world, matters. A lot. As for portability, yes, I can bring my MacBook Pro with me practically anywhere, but there are a good many places I would never bring it because it wouldn't last more than 30 seconds in most work environments. That's where more durable systems, even if a few ounces heavier, will always win; the ability to actually use the machine as a portable device.
Thinkpads no longer exist. Just because the label is on a Lenovo doesn't make it a real "Thinkpad" in terms that we were discussing. TBH, I haven't considered anything from Lenovo as worthy of purchase. Just too many problems, the major one being trust. That said, there are places where ruggedized machines are needed. Neither your normal Thinkpads nor MBPs are suitable there. Instead, a lot more durable machine is needed and compromises in size and weight are definitely made.
I mean in 2009 a sub 2-hour battery and enough heat to toast your lap and anything you might care about?
Yet that's where Apple went in 2016. Hell, my 2011 17" would roast my lap and only last 1 hour under the right load (which just so happened to be a common use case for me). A 2009 Envy ran at comparable temps and had comparable battery life to a 2009 Mac laptop at similar loads; the reason for the perceived difference is that HP chose to rate battery life under actual work loads, while Apple rates battery life based on browsing mostly text web pages.

Re:In a related story
That's kind of sort of not true, and you know it. Different vendor, no telling what you're getting OS-wise. Maybe that's changed with Oreo. But to state that you get the same OS is absolute and total bullshit. Even in the same damn version, I get OSes that behave and look quite differently from each other. This is even a claimed benefit - that vendors can customize the OS. You can't have it both ways. It winds up being build once test on all devices. It's been getting a little better, and I restrict myself to core OS features only.
The important part was:
and access to all of your purchased apps
Sorry you missed that.
Apple does require the code and the device to be registered with them for non Apple Store based loading unless you're into jail-breaking.
Can you provide a link to more details regarding that program? As an iOS developer, myself, this conversation is truly the first I'm hearing of it.
I'm not sure where you're going with this. You asked if you could legally run OSX. That's not the same as getting support from the Genius bar, which only supports Apple products. If you note, Apple support has always been in terms of their hardware sales.
MacOS (formerly OS X) is an Apple product, which might be why one may expect the genius bar to support it.
The question of support is irrelevant to your question of legally running OSX.
But it's fully relevant in a discussion regarding vendor lock-in. Yes, I can get 10 hours of battery life from this 2016 MBP if I'm just browsing text pages; I get closer to 2-3 hours if I'm actually using it. Case in point, I've been working since about -
Let me refer you to Lt. Cmdr Data

Too expensive
in the USA especially in tornado alley, because wood frame houses almost always gets torn to pieces, it would be nice to have my whole house completely tornado-proof,
You can already do that. It's just going to cost a bloody fortune. 3D printing will not solve that problem. Buildings robust enough to withstand a tornado are inherently going to be more expensive than those which aren't, typically by a lot. It's almost certainly cheaper to rebuild than it is to build a what amounts to a bunker.
, i think a monolithic concrete house made with a 3D printer would be able to build a house capable of withstanding a tornado
Depends on the design. Just being concrete isn't enough. It has to be reinforced concrete of an adequate thickness with appropriate sealing and ventilation. Remember that tornados do things like throw cars through the air. It's going to be rather expensive to build a building strong enough to withstand impact from a car that has been flung through the air.
In the immortal words of Ron White, It's not THAT the wind's a blowin'. It's WHAT the wind's a blowin.

Macarena Non Stop
At my daughter's high school, any student whose phone rings in class has to get up in front of the class and dance The Macarena. This is a surprisingly effective deterrent.
Until you get to the showoff with six different remixes of "Macarena" on his phone, including the one that sounds like it's straight out of Mortal Kombat ("La Mezcla Guerrillera by Fangoria") and the one that sounds like almost a mash-up with "Unbelievable" by EMF ("Bass Bumpers Remix").

Re:Thanks Obama
I really wouldn't remind liberals about McCarthy if I was you.
Today's "liberals" would make the Reagan Democrats look like hippies. They're screaming "Russia Russia Russia" 24/7, blaming them for every bump in the night, going so far as to red bait right-wing Fox News hosts, and engage in a prosecutorial witch hunt with zero basis for an investigation, so yeah, they've gone full McCarthy.
In reference to Ms. Daniels, you also seem to be confusing "democrats" with "the media".
Democratic voters or democratic politicians? Constant propaganda from the latter has snowed much of the former. Russian interference is just accepted as fact, like Saddam's WMD's.

I saw this at least 3 years ago from US Navy
Here's a 3 year old video on a US Navy project doing this same thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
This Navy project is not new but they have people on the project go around to conventions and such to speak on it. They show good economics, being able to convert CO2 and hydrogen from any natural water source into a liquid fuel for aircraft and other uses. All they need is some funding to ramp this up to something that actually produces fuel for military aircraft.
The largest consumer of fuel in the USA is the US Air Force. The largest air force in the world is the US Air Force. The second largest air force in the world is the US Navy. The third largest air force in the world is the US Marine Corps. If we can get the US military to use the technology that they already have to produce jet fuel then that would be a major win in so many ways.
This idea of carbon neutral fuel production is dependent on a carbon neutral energy source. We have this carbon neutral energy source in nuclear power. The US Navy knows how to operate nuclear power safely. The US Coast Guard is desperate for some new ice breakers, let them have them and make them nuclear powered. Making more nuclear powered US Navy and US Coast Guard surface ships, and this fuel synthesis process to fuel the support aircraft and auxiliary boats, means a big dent in consumed petroleum. Add in some nuclear power on shore to power airports and military bases, and make the fuel for the vehicles that come and go, and that's another big dent in petroleum consumed.
Electricity might work for cars and trains but that won't work for boats and planes. A large enough ship can be nuclear powered, and we should embrace that wholeheartedly for military and civilian ships. Planes won't fly without kerosene. We now get kerosene from digging it up from the ground but we can get it from seawater if we just develop the technology and take the problems of digging up petroleum seriously.
I can't take anyone seriously on the threat of global warming if they do not include nuclear power in the solution. They mention this great process of pulling carbon from the air to turn into fuel but say nothing of where the energy to power it comes from. That says a lot to me. They can't bring themselves to admit that nuclear power is necessary to make this viable. The US Navy has no such aversion to nuclear power. We can at least allow the US Navy to develop the technology they have. Like so many things the US military develops it is likely to find its way into the civilian market in time.

Instead you ALWAYS exercise your Fifth Amendment privilege to remain silent. ESPECIALLY if you're innocent. ANYTHING you tell them "can and will be used against you".
Even if it's true, somebody else may have told them something conflicting - through error or malice - and the police and prosecutors may then decide you're lying. Bingo: Both a criminal charge and the burden of proof switches from them proving you're guilty to you proving you're innocent.

Re:Great experiment!
We have multiple instances of minimum wage laws correlating with putting low-skill workers out of work.
If by "many" you mean "not one", then yes. Minimum wage increases are a job booster because it gives low wage workers more money to spend, which creates demand. As demand is what creates jobs (not the rich, not capitalism, not tax cuts) you see more employment, not less. Your uniquely American "losses" come from the fact that people don't need to have three jobs as a wage slave to keep a roof over their heads.

Re:Great experiment!
Very clever. Except the article doesn't say anything about trying to reduce the number of Uber drivers or traffic congestion, but limiting the "surge pricing" from the unlicensed taxi company.

Straight up trolling
Does that mean that Bunker Blaster will also not be published on Steam? Nor any of the other titles shown there?

Re: This is not for US-ians
I went to Austria during the winter almost 10 years ago. I don't know how the kangaroos can handle that cold year after year

Re:Fine, just make sure kids aren't buying this crDo you screen the games your kids play for deer crossing the road? Would it surprise you to learn that deer are more dangerous than school shootings?
- There have been about 250 fatalities from school shootings over 18 years (excluding suicides and gang violence). That works out to (250)/(18) = 13.9 deaths per year. Since there are approximately 51 million K-12 students in the U.S., a student's odds of being killed in a school shooting in any given year are (51 million) / (13.9 per year) = 1 in 3.67 million.
- About 120 Americans are killed every year by deer. (325.7 million Americans) / (120 per year) = 1 in 2.71 million.
So a student is more likely to be killed by a deer than from a school shooting. Where are all the walk-outs and protests advocating deer population control?
For some perspective on the scope of the school shooting problem, look at the stats the CDC puts out. For 2015, the leading causes of death among the 15-19 year old demographic were:
3,919 deaths - Accidents (mostly automobile accidents and drug overdoses). 282x more than school shootings.
2.061 deaths - Suicide. 148x more.
1,587 deaths - Homicide (mostly outside school, and gang related). 114x more.
583 deaths - Malignant neoplasms (cancer). 42x more.
306 deaths - Heart disease. 22x more.
195 deaths - Birth defects. 14x more.
72 deaths - Influenza (the flu). 5.2x more.
63 deaths - Chronic lower respiratory diseases. 4.5x more.
61 deaths - Cerebrovascular diseases. 4.4x more.
52 deaths - Diabetes. 3.7x more.
41 deaths - Complications from pregnancy and childbirth. 3x more.
A protest over excessive rates of teen pregnancy could potentially save 3x more lives than a protest over school shootings. Likewise, teaching kids not to each too many sweets, to exercise, not to smoke, get the flu shot, use sunscreen, not to join gangs, to buckle their seat belt, not to use drugs, and offering them counseling for depression, would all be much more productive uses of our time and effort than worrying about or debating school shootings. For that matter, controlling deer populations to reduce the number of fatalities from striking deer could potentially save 1.35x as many students' lives as lost to school shootings.
If you want to tackle a life-threatening issue that students face, probably the best choice is suicide. It results in more than a hundred times as many student deaths as school shootings. But when's the last time you saw the media run a story about teen suicide? The only reason school shootings are even on the radar is because of the media using them to play the "think of the children!" card against guns. -

Re: You forgot: Materials are not free
No. Holy hell, no. How much does half a tonne of steel per panel cost? How much cost would it add to the rest of the hardware in the plant? If you need four panels per kW and hence two tonnes of steel per kW and just even scrap steel costs around $200/tonne, how do you build a PV plant at the current international prices of ~$1000/kW if you'd have to pay over $400/kW just in the worst raw steel? You can't! Come on, your ideas don't even pass a fifteen second sanity test! Surely you can do better than that?
Also, the vast majority of PV installations is fixed. Ever since the panel price came down, there's been very little reason to introduce extra mechanical things that can break. And there are those "concrete bases" of yours. No, not really half a tonne per panel.
