This new spin is very strange.

It doesn't seem strange to me. It's simple demonization. It's political suppression through oppression. It doesn't matter if your are using raw nationalism and fear to shout down and suppress communists, or "islamofascists" or "Russian trolls" -- it's all the same mindless militarism and nationalism.

Where are the communists in today's Russia?

They placed 2nd in the recent Russian elections for president. Of course Putin, wildly popular in Russia and winning something like 70 or 80% of the vote, crushed the communists.

Where are the paranoid anticommunists in today's America? Where is the witch hunting committee?

It's the 21st century. Since communism has been removed as a specter, anti-communism has been replaced with anti-Muslim mindlessness. Since Americans didn't believe Al Qaeda or ISIS was a real, existential threat to the US, now we've moved on to using North Korea or Russia to generate the fear to ensure the Pentagon and military-industrial complex's budgets are safe.

Rather than the House Un-American Activities Committee leading the charge, today it's corporations talking about suppressing "fake news," Google removing progressive web sites and foreign media sources from their news and searches -- all while claiming they love the 1st Amendment and free speech, and all for purposes of nationalism and militarism.

It's simply a case of meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

There's nothing new here, the same thing keeps happening over and over again - so many times most of us have lost count and most are unable to bring forward anything they learned in one time loop into the next time loop. (it maps almost PERFECTLY to that hillarious SG-1 episode)

Here's the problem:

There is a completely non-productive slice of society that becomes middle managers and consultants who derive exhorbitant incomes pushing crap and Buzzwords

As a result, every few years there is a new wave of books seminars and videos claiming some new buzzword methodology will solve all software development problems. Investors and management types lap it all up as a quick way to get more productivity out of the same or fewer employees, and by the time many companies have fallen for the con and spent lots of time and money adopting the new methodology the so-called experts move on. Then comes the next breakthrough and the next tidal wave of gullible bosses looking for a way to speed development while saving money.

None of these schemes ever solves the following problem (which they all always promise to solve)

Fast
Cheap
Pick any two

things generally were awful before the scientific method took over. We called it the dark ages.

And re-read my post please. It's not the collection of facts themselves or the access. It's how it's all used together. It's how people become inquisitive. Questioning. Unwilling to accept authority because when authority gives them answers it's so easy to fact check those answers. Both superstition and faith require a person to be willing to accept things without evidence. That's how you get authoritarianism. It's how you get people to do things without questioning. Instant access to knowlege does away with that. You can't tell me lighting is God's wrath when I can google what lighting is in 30 seconds. It makes it harder and harder to appeal to a higher power in order to justify blind obedience. That can't help but be a good thing.

Also, you're falling back on a classic scam: Science can't prove everything therefore magic. Here is a much better explanation than I ever could give. While I don't agree with everything on that guy's channel, his points regarding reason and evidence are well founded.

In the last 20 years we've seen a lot of pretty opinions previously thought too barbaric to make a comeback gaining traction. Our last president supported torture and our current one thinks it's OK to murder civilians. In light of all this I think a reasonable person would start getting nervous at things that are 'only an opinion'.

Seriously -- I applaud the flat-Earth nutcase (I think he's one too) that launched himself in a rocket the other month. But he thinks something, and he's out actively trying to prove it. I don't understand why lunar eclipses don't help -- I think it's because they believe the Earth has to be sitting on something: the "Down" thing. They "get" gravity as down, but can't figure out that for something floating in space, down is always near the center. (But way down there isn't down, it's UP.) But he's at least trying. I don't see why he can't fly an unmanned rocket with a GoCam on it and collect it himself, or radio down the pics. The whole obsession with analog formats (and super-digital formats like SACD) stems from lay people's fundamental misunderstanding of digital sampling. So getting into space and colonising other systems (avoiding world war three and triggering space colonisation), expanding further and then civil war and the following reconstruction. You don't need to have a strong AI like some kind of skynet, even simple weapons with limited automation can be very deadly. Everything from smart mines to futuristic micro drone swarms. Larger helicopter sized autonomous weapons platforms are also already under development.

This is why I say that. Sure it will work fine for some people in some areas but reliably doing it across the entire userbase (that has enabled mic access if it even cares about permissions), plus all the other processing that will need to go on to isolate each voice and everything just so they can determine you mentioned nickleback and then it can advertise other bland rock to you or whatever product that may be (how many words/phrases are we even listening for here?
