Flat earthers are a different breed altogether. With your typical conspiracy (9-11 inside job, fake the moon landing, vaccines cause autism, etc.), all it takes is a combination of a good story, not understood or misunderstood science, and a belief that you know something special that most people don't. It also becomes more popular as time gets further and further away from the initial event. But a key element is the inability for everyone or the average person to recreate the original variables surrounding the conspiracy. (We cannot recreate 9-11, we cannot recreate a moon landing limiting our technology and knowledge to what we had in 1968, etc.

But with flat earthers? There are literally hundreds of ways today the average human can observe that the Earth is round. There's no depth of science to it. One can ask themselves the question, "Why can't I see the Rocky Mountains from my house?" Or, one can go find a straight road (perhaps on the salt flats or on ND Hwy 46), get a pair of binoculars or a good telescoping lens on a tripod, watch a car drive by, and watch it disappear over the horizon, then ask the question, "Would the car disappear if the Earth was flat?" Or just go onto YouTube and watch all the videos made floating weather balloons up to the stratosphere, where the camera can capture the curvature of the Earth. Or talk to an airplane pilot. Or control tower personnel whose equations they use to calculate distances, vectors, and flight plans would fail miserably if they were to use Euclidian Geometry instead of Spherical Geometry. Or duplicate Eratosthenes' experiment. (Yes, that one's far more complicated than watching video's on YouTube, but if it worked for some dead white Greek dude over two thousand years ago, who didn't have the internet or Google, then it can work for anyone today as well.)

Most conspiracy theories choose to ignore expert opinions because they're incapable of understanding the science themselves. Flat-earthers are fully capable of understanding the science; they just refuse to understand.

Sokal Affair - very funny and kind of depressing. Hoax paper proposed that quantum gravity has progressive political implications. And goes on to link ZF set theory and axiom of choice to feminism. Real hilarious garbage and right up there on what I consider great culture jamming.
And a perhaps easier to digest is a YouTube video that asks Is Science a Social Construct? with a bias towards the answer being "No" and "those people are stupid" (my words, but that's the feel I got. I don't remember the exact insults they used)

And once you absorb a bit of The Two Cultures, you can find all sorts of nonsense from the humanities trying to make sense of science. Or at least pull it into a context they understand, even if it is not the context that science understand itself.

Astronomers on Earth use dry ice snow to clean primary mirrors of large telescopes from dust. Guess which gas is available everywhere around you on Mars in copious quantities to compress and spray on your panels? :) You might even not need to go out if you outfit an autonomous rover with a nozzle.

This seems odd to me. Considering his rhetoric hasn't changed since at least 1988. It could be true but it must also then be true that he has also thought about this for a long time. If that is true then I think that at least alludes to something upstairs beyond loose screws and empty drawers to see the right timing.

Now whether the long term financial gains associated with the presidency (e.g., millions of dollars in book deals and speaking fees) will offset what it cost him is another question. I am willing to bet "yes, he will be richer for having been president"

Again, I have a hard time understanding this. Since he announced his candidacy he has lost business associates, donors, political favors, and friends in addition to the initial investment costs as well as boycotts and protests outside his establishments and the hatred from media and Hollywood. Sure, his businesses might do better but that is a big might. That is a very high risk low reward when there are literally hundreds of better ideas to make money and brand recognition. Then, as you mention, to top it off run his campaign in such a way to risk everything else not invested in his campaign by supposedly colluding with Russians? But then again, if he didn't intend to win why would he collude with the Russians?

I could wrong and it maybe the money maker billionaires dream of but it just seems to be too risky for low rewards that won't pay off in any meaningful time with too many contradictory suppositions (strengthen his brand by becoming an enemy to media and Hollywood. not intend to win but collude with Russia). I think a simpler idea is that he is a patriotic idiot that had the means to run for president and won because Hillary was hated.

Well, while the obvious jokes about hydro and wind made me laugh, the solar one is at least half-way serious. Just thinking about the Moon, the answer is obviously that the 336-hour nights would make solar kind of tricky.

In the case of Mars, though, I thought it was interesting that one of the theories behind the short lifespan of the Spirit and Opportunity rovers was that dust would form on the solar panels and the rovers would die within 90 days. Turned out that the breeze and dust-devils kept the solar panels relatively clean.

Now don't get me wrong--I'm pretty sure you'd run into problems if you drove Spirit & Opportunity into a dust storm. And if we're spending trillions of dollars to send people to Mars, I'd rather they not get turned back because of a dust storm. So the nuclear reactor seems like a pretty good idea.
