Re:"Adjusted salaries" - WTF?
Whenever someone asks what drives this social justice thinking, I inevitably give them this talk by Evan Sayet entitled "Understanding How Modern Liberals Think". Evan also happens to be Jewish & grew up in New York as a liberal but eventually noticed some serious problems with the Left's way of thinking.
I can't do his talk justice, but essentially the premise is that the Left wants/believes in equality so badly that it ends up punishing those who've make correct decisions and supporting those who've made bad ones in order to reach equality of outcome.
Over the last few decades, as Western society has weakened, victimhood has become very powerful tool - because for some reason...people think that the weaker someone can claim to be, the more power we should hand them.

Re:No One Wants a Roku Account
IMO Roku makes the best hardware box specifically because they have no significant streaming service, so it's in their best interest to ensure it works well (or at least acceptably) with all the streaming services that matter.
Absolutely agree. Other than an Intel Compute Stick and Kodi, the Roku is the better/best option as it's cheaper, works really well, comes with a remote and a great interface, and doesn't require your credit card number for roping you into one preferred source of content. Bonus, it is friendly to lots of paid content if you want it, like Sling or HBO. And as the Roku platform becomes more popular, there's more incentive for Roku apps to work well (as opposed, unfortunately, to Kodi apps which are often hit-and-miss).
But to a lot of investor-people, the real money is in subscriptions, not in a one-time sale of a device that might last years. This sucks for consumers who just want to buy something and just use it. And how many content subscriptions can a person have anyway, until they're paying as much or more than they would for full-out cable or satellite TV?
If Roku continues to make great boxes that don't come with strings attached like Apple TV or FireStick, then I don't care what else they do. Otherwise, you may be best off just pulling an older PC out of the closet and hooking it to your TV with a wireless mouse and keyboard.

Re:How much is "ISlamic"
So, in a topic talking about Islam and it's artistic cultural heritage (which does include destruction and theft as you even say) you turn it around to "what about these other cultures!". Bravo. Whataboutism in full force I see.
none of these countries are in any position to criticise the Islamic conquest without answering some very embarrassing questions about their own past.
Why? The topic is about Islam. The past of Islam and how it has influenced the art and culture is the topic. Why can no one mention the reality of what "change in religion" means in that time without feeling your shame and condescension?
By your standard everyone lives in a glass house because the past is horrible compared to today. Does that mean no one can talk of any culture or any past transgression unless it's their own culture? What happens if those in that culture refuse to critizise their past, I guess that means it was all rainbows and unicorn farts, and "just a change in religion" means nothing more than a friendly door knock like this.

Close the carbon cycle
We know how to close the carbon cycle. CO2 dissolves from the air into any water exposed to the atmosphere and we know how to get it out very efficiently. Byproducts of this process on seawater is oxygen, hydrogen, and desalinated water. Take the carbon dioxide and hydrogen, run it through a process we've known about for 100 years now, and we get hydrocarbon fuels. The fuel produced not only closes the carbon cycle on transportation fuels (jet fuel, gasoline, diesel fuel) but has none of the sulfur and other nasty stuff that petroleum fuels have.
Here's a five minute video giving the highlights:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...We don't need new cars, we need new fuels.
The average life of a typical car is about 10 years. A cargo ship or passenger airplane have lifespans that can exceed 30 years. Even if we were to switch to all electric cars today we'd still be burning considerable amounts of petroleum products for at least 50 years.
Switching to how we get our fuels means we can keep our vehicles, and much of our petroleum oil based infrastructure. If people still want electric cars then nothing will stop them from buying them. I'd think that new fuels, which would be just like the old fuels, would be a much easier sell to the public that want to keep their current cars.
Maybe getting the infrastructure needed to create carbon neutral fuels would also take 50 years. Since we already know how it's done the hard part is behind us, we just need to optimize the process and scale it up to industrial scale. There's no new technology involved. We can do two things at once. We can build electric cars AND research new fuels. If it works then we just cut the time to transition away from fossil fuels. If it doesn't then we still have electric vehicles to use.
-
Re:Immpossible!
Cars are typically far less than 30% efficient. As the previous poster stated the Carnot cycle limits the efficiency. There are also significant losses in the transmission, something that electric vehicles lack other than simple gear reduction. The transmission on an EV is far more efficient than a transmission for an internal combustion vehicle. For example, in my EV there are only two physical gears for a 9.73:1 gear reduction. Compare this to a typical transmission in an ICE vehicle. There is no clutch, torque converter, etc. It's a one-speed transmission with far lower losses than any multi-gear transmission or even a planetary gear assembly, which many hybrid transmissions use. While hybrids, and especially plug-in hybrids improve the efficiency by allowing the engine to operate in its most efficient mode with regenerative braking, it still falls far short of what an EV achieves. The battery losses for an EV are actually quite low. Good lithium-ion batteries are extremely efficient at storing electricity. In fact, there's a direct correlation to their efficiency and how long they'll last as is described in this video.
Also, at least in the United States, the use of coal for power generation is dropping significantly due to the lower cost of natural gas power plants and wind (regardless of what the politicians do). What this means is that the efficiency of EVs is increasing as coal usage drops since natural gas power plants tend to be more efficient and release around half the CO2 of an equivalent coal plant.

I have had a person in my family who was in an accident where someone was killed. He was completely not at fault...
And you know this because the victim didn't dispute the police report.
Sadly, the police tend to be biased against bicyclists and pedestrians for "getting in the way" of cars. There was a time when jaywalking wasn't a crime, but then cars came and ruined the streets for everyone.

Must-see video on how Apple thwarts repairs!
In this video Louis Rossman explains some of the ways Apple uses to make their products hard to repair for NO good reason apart from their own profit. He tells of his colleagues (independent repair shops) having their posts deleted when all they were saying is that such and such CAN be in fact repaired. Apple will not repair most damages even if it involves the user losing his/her data, and even if they are perfectly repairable.
Moreover, Rossman explains how Apple uses dirty tricks to terminate the warranty even when the user did nothing unauthorized.Just watch it and be angry. Be very fucking angry.

For anyone who has forgotten what we know about this.
We should also mention that we have emails, from the FBI, showing that she had things like classified pictures of NK in there. Yeah, sure, sending it off to her uncleared staff to print it out on insecure printers is totally a good idea. It's not like this is a crazy little country with nuclear missiles or something. Let's just make sure the Chinese know how much we know about their little brother Kim's big missiles. I'm sure that's totally reasonable....
The charge would be unauthorized release of classified info. So who authorizes it? A judge? Nope. As the Secretary of State she had ultimate authority of classification of anything originating from her office, which was the entire state department. From a legal standpoint, if the Secretary of State emails their staff classified information originating from the State Department, they are de-facto declassifying it. That is why the whole investigation is bizarre and why no charges were brought. You can debate whether this is good judgement or not, but the idea of anything happening legally is absurd.

Re:The fox is no longer guarding the henhouse
He's confusing Congress with the administration, i.e., the White House. If attorney-general Jeff Sessions were going to bring charges against Hillary, if it was winnable, if it's even a good idea to go after your former opponent just after the election's over, he would have done so already.
The story here is about Congress, but all this means is they'll hold hearings and issue subpoenas to force people to grovel in front of TV cameras while Congresscritters grandstand to show how tough they are as they look ahead to the mid-terms. Nice distraction from secret, closed-door meetings that produce bills not even a GOP majority can pass.
I'd suggest Congresscritters best check their own asses before going forward with this. I'll warrant there's a lot of personal e-mail servers being used out there, perhaps completely without the congressman's knowledge ("that's why I hire people to take care of these things!") with all sorts of classified or re-classified stuff on it, along with a little p0rn ("just good ol' locker-room stuff") and a keylogging and microphone hack wired straight to the Kremlin.

Re:I'm worried about this myself, but already orde
Um, the V30 reviews are actually what got me worried about the 2 XL before people started posting hands-on info about it. The V30 certainly seems to have the same off-angle blue tint, and also a lot of reports of blotchy colors (which have *not* shown up in any reviews I have seen of the 2 XL, thankfully)
Obviously there are a lot of reviews by folks of various qualifications. Consider it or not, it's up to you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...I've heard a few times the display on the V30 was not good, but nothing saying it has the same problems exactly as the 2XL.
I am even more worried about burn-in showing up just days or weeks into usage
Then cancel / abort your order. They *all* have the burn in (or "ghosting", or whatever is the right technical term). I have a 2XL, and everything you hear in reviews and media is true. Trust me it hurts bad to admit that after spending $927.

Re:Weak
It's worth noting that Samsung won the same case regarding tablets - they convinced the jury that the elements in the Apple design patent for the iPad already existed in other products and popular culture (2001, Star Trek, etc) long before the iPad. In fact if you look at Samsung's digital picture frame from 2006, it's pretty clear their Galaxy Tab simply re-used that face design, rather than copying the iPad. And if anything, it was Apple who copied Samsung. (Except of course Samsung never got a design patent on a black rectangle with rounded corners - because that'd be silly and the USPTO would never grant it, right?)
The only reason Samsung lost to the design patent on phones was because they missed a filing deadline. They'd put together a document showing pre-production models and design concepts of Samsung phones prior to the iPhone's release. Demonstrating that their phone designs already incorporated all the elements in Apple's design patent before the patent was granted. Unfortunately, Judge Koh prohibited Samsung from showing that evidence to the jury because they missed the filing deadline.
BTW, a lot of other Apple patents should never have been granted. Here's pinch-to-zoom in 1988. And the "bounce" animation is just the transient response of an underdamped second order system that every freshman engineering student learns. -
