Re:You just now started worrying?
Every politician that has any idea how the real world works, realizes the US could NEVER impose a no fly zone over Syria. You do realize Russia has hands down the best SAM systems in the world?
Only idiot liberals and Hillary Clinton that believe that you can magically impose a no fly zone.
FYI Congress already debated the no fly zone and it was torn to shreds https://www.youtube.com/watch?... -
Re: Nefarious uses?
Unless the polls were hacked, then the election wasn't hacked.
Grima Wormtongue, um, sorry, Sean Spicer, has already stated that the President BELIEVES the election was hacked, that the President has SEEN reports and documentation of it. It happened today from the Mouth of Sauron, I'm sorry, Trump, Sean Spicer, himself.
Who are we to argue with Lord Hee-Haw, himself, if he wants to say that the 2016 November Elections are illegitimate? That's fine, I am entirely comfortable with accepting his determination that he was illegally elected. He has even told us how we should respond.

we stopped counting people as unemployed if they gave up looking for a job
There are different numbers for different purposes. They are not the same, but none of them are invalid, it depends what you want to know:

Re:North Korea responds
Nah, it's daddy Kim Jong Il who refused to fly on airplanes, his well-known son does fly on some nice Antonov. Of course the existing train network (which other countries just call the national rail tracks or something) is still used by current glorious Kim. DPRK complies with the struggle against global warming, so the big plane likely is not flown that often.
You can see an airplane trip from 3:40 here. You can watch from beginning until 24:30 uninterrupted, keep going if you want (then there's a train at 27:50 anyhow). It's fucking bad ass anyway!

There is that and the idea that it may not actually be possible to work correctly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...Before anyone gets twisted and says 'low pressure' he addresses that in the second video. He uses the pressures right out of the papers hyperloop is producing.
This *might* work at lower pressure (say airplane altitude) but will still have a lot of issues. Even then might not work.
It is not even all that new of an idea. Robert Goddard proposed it years ago and failed to get it to work correctly. I want it to work. But at the pressures they are talking about it probably will not. I hope for the best but lets be pragmatic. It probably will not

While I do appreciate a user-replaceable battery, I certainly don't agree that a non-replaceable battery is purely, if even mostly a greed decision
Apple manages to make phones with a battery that can be replaced with a few simple tools, if the need arises.
The only reason you'd design a phone with the back glued shut is the same reason Briggs & Stratton sells an engine they claim needs no oil changes. I'll give you a hint, it's not because they love their customers.

but wait; there are markings
The abos are not so innocent as the liberals want to portray them after all.
Here's the thing: the upside of inventing a writing system is world domination; the downside is finally having to admit in public that you are a real ass (and always have been).
In the above, "you" is a set of nesting dolls, innermost being the fifty-year-old white male technocrats of western European origin who treat Wikipedia as their private, personal playgrounds (thence to aging white European males, white European males, white males, whites altogether, etc.)
Here's the second thing: after a society invents writing, soon the society has written myths (with serious legacy entrenchment) that innocence preceded the current sad state of affairs (how-far-I-have-fallen porn, not that the larger consequences can't be remedied by kneeling under the right cumulus cloud for a thoroughly abject sixty seconds).
Society will re-invent writing over and over again (movable type, Movable Type) before the reversal of true illumination makes the least headway: that the human asshole apogee was attained circa the advent of the original edged weapon.
As far as the abos go, they all need to repeat to themselves "there but for the grace of God go I", unless they think their ancestors truly enlightened enough to not have had even the most remote possibility of inventing any form of written record, whatsoever (best if you're not much past the wreathie leafy loin cloth, because any loose thread threatens to quipu a long record, and then immediately you're on the outie asshole train along with every other post-prehistoric posse of mugs, pugs, and thugs).

Re:Your skills will be automated too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
This guy isn't a math guru. And that demo only took him one day to build. As many mentioned here lately, software engineers "automate" their own work alllllllll the time.
So the "boxes" that "require lots of math"?
Well, I had to build something like that and I had about a dozen (awesome) open-source solutions to choose from.
I'm not a math god, not even a front-end developer, and yet I got super-impressive results pretty easily.Math is way easier to automate than creativity, and that's *exactly* what AI does.
You have open-source projects like TensorFlow so you don't have to do loads of math yourself.
Did you ever feel like doing all the math to create your own RNNs?
No? Well, no one else did, either, and now that they don't have to, they're coming up with super impressive/creative/quick results.
Only because you need to do *less* math.So mr. PHP guy will go on to drag and drop "boxes" around, building awesome, creative, useful things.
Maybe, just maybe, the simplicity of that process will allow us to create way more complex software that won't necessarily make mr. PHP guy's work less interesting, challenging, rewarding, useful or profitable. -

Re: Good idea, bad name
Yes, every word has its origin:
auto = word-forming element meaning "self, one's own, by oneself," from Greek auto- "self, one's own,"
pilot = "one who steers a ship," from Middle French pillote (16c.)
so, "autopilot" = "a device which steers a ship/car on its own". So I'd guess that anybody who knows what "auto/automatic" and "pilot" means but who is NOT a trained pilot and does not know precisely what the autopilot on a plane can and cannot do would immediately guess that a Tesla autopilot CAN steer the car fully on its own.
(btw, as for the plane autopilot - there are enough news stories and videos out there about how modern autopilots can even start and land a plane fully automatically, so why would people NOT think that it can do everything in between fully automatically, too? https://www.youtube.com/watch?... )

Re:What about the C.H.I.P.?
Less expensive devices like the C.H.I.P. are the ones I'd expect to take a bite out of Pi.
Currently, I'd say C.H.I.P. is pretty disappointing. On the one hand, they do have a pretty much stock Debian system in place so you've got the nice repository of packages. On the downside, there's issues of using too much power over the microUSB (even when using their not-all-out flash image) and risking killing a computer if you're using it as a power source*, the pretty substantial boot time (about a minute), and a really unclear path on what Nextthing plans to do about various issues on the system**. It seems pretty clear they're too busy trying to upsell to the $69 PocketCHIP (which I can sort of understand because presumably that's where the profit is coming from, but a PocketCHIP is pretty crap compared to some cheap Android tablet/keyboard combo).
So, yea, I can't really figure out what you'd want to use CHIP for except as a really overkill microcontroller that has all sorts of basic issues where you'd want to use it as a microcontroller. This may change, but I only see it happening if enough of a community can work around the basic issues and can turn CHIP into a decently basic 8-bit/16-bit gaming system. I mean, the core is there so a third party could probably make a killing flashing and releasing a setup using that.
* The suggestion to use "CHG-IN" and a battery to mitigate the risk is pretty well a joke, IMO. Even if, in theory, it would work it simply should never be the case that it's drawing so much power to actually risk killing a device it's connect to.
** They've got only about alpha level support for 3D acceleration and 2D acceleration is a joke. Trying to use it as an actual desktop computer is pretty useless because Firefox/Iceweasel is ridiculously slow*** and their fork of Chromium is outdated (and single tab) and basically any activity (even moving the mouse) can cause audio skipping (and alsa underruns but then that's still a messy Linux thing I can't wholly fault Nextthing for). And note, this is a 1GHz processor, so there's really no excuse for this in general..
*** I know the link is for PocketCHIP, but it's basically the same horrible performance on CHIP + VGA.

Re:Not a single time traveler?
The U.S. overthrow of Ukraine is no more disputable than the fact that the U.S. government lied through its teeth on Iraq's WMD's. Hillary's stooge Victoria Nuland is on video bragging about spending $5 billion to manipulate the Ukrainian government - and then Democrats whine about Russian interference in their own elections. The legislature failed to get the necessary number of votes to impeach the president, but the US immediately recognized the legitimacy of the coup after the president was forced to flee for his life.
So go fuck yourself, you sucker of anti-semetic fascist cock, you.

Re:AI does what AI is programmed to do
It does exactly what it is programmed/trained to do, nothing more, nothing less.
If we're talking about an AI system with general intelligence, that is, a system that's equally or more intelligent than humans are then the whole point is that it's capable of changing its programming.
As Sam Harris this video , we cannot assume that we can keep on improving the intelligence of our machines and simultaneously thinking that we will retain total control of said machines. He also points out the dangers posed by AI are not in the 'killbot' scenario by comparing the difference in intelligence between humans and a superintelligent system to the difference between humans and ants. We don't seek to exterminate or destroy all ants, but when they get in the way of our higher goals, be it building a building, or whatever, we destroy them without hesitation.
The danger is that if in the future AI system/systems are in charge of overseeing for example global production systems. Let's assume the AI is ethical, that is, it has a goal that is to maintain the existence of human life and biodiversity on the planet. What will it do to make sure this goal is met? It might well end up killing some humans in order to save the species, not via Terminator robots, but by for example shutting down polluting production and power-generation in overpopulated areas etc.
Also, since true AI systems would be superior in waging war, the emergence of AI itself poses a risk to humanity because whoever gets there first will have a massive advantage, both in strategy as well as weapons R & D. If the Russians found out the americans had a near complete AI they are about to deploy churning out decades worth of material and weapons research in a matter of weeks, what would they do? What would the US do if they found out the same about China? Etc.
In short: killbots are not the problem, but that does not mean that the emergence of an intelligence on this planet that exceeds our own and cannot be guaranteed to share our values does not pose risks, There are great many risks involved, some of which are even probably unknown to us at this point.

3DTV used the wrong 3D, the "fake your eyes into thinking you're there" kind of 3D. What would be far more useful and likely adopted quicker is the free viewpoint 3D, where the user can choose their own camera perspective, not being locked into what the director chose.

Re:already exceeding expectations
People blame her for supporting the Iraq War, which is fair - but she wasn't one of the ones pushing it,
She made an impassioned speech on the floor of the Senate pushing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
You also ignored that while Secretary of State, she pushed for "military intervention" in Libya and Syria, backed the coups in Honduras and Egypt, and pushed to escalate against Russia in Syria and Ukraine.
After she stepped down as Secretary of State, she blasted the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by Kerry.
As far as I know, Clinton has not opposed a "military intervention" since she entered public life.
More importantly though, she is first and foremost a -rational- actor in terms of international policy.
Iraq turned into a shitshow. Clinton backed the war in Libya. Libya turned into a shitshow. Clinton backed the war in Syria. Syria turned into a shitshow. That is not the behavior of a rational actor unless they are seeking to create more violence.

Re:Star Trek was never SJW
As for special allowances, Worf murders at least two Klingons I can remember while serving in Starfleet. Picard is his captain at the time of the first one (Duros) and basically lets it side.
He's pissed as hell and comes very close to asking Worf to resign, despite it being a completely legal killing under Klingon law and being done "off the clock", not in Worf's official capacities. The second one I'm assuming is from late-season DS9, which (at that point) wasn't a very progressive-oriented show at all beyond perhaps Bashir's pushback against Section 31.
If you want to see the cultural sensitivity with which Worf's gruff, stoic, pragmatic Klingon attitudes and ideas were generally met, you need look no farther than the hilarious Worf Denied compilation.Having said that there was an investigation of Riker and the claims made against him
Of the murder only, as I recall, because there was some forensic evidence there.
But yes, it was far from perfect in execution.
Out of curiosity, what would you have preferred to have seen?
The counselor's office was a safe space.
By "safe spaces", I'm obviously referring to public spaces designed for group interactions that discriminate against people based on ideology or race (or both.) I don't think that there are many anti-SJWers out there arguing that all forms of private, voluntary counseling are bad.

Re:Down with Putin - Down with Trump
This is one of the Chairman Mao fan club from the Obama administration.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Pardon the fact that it's Glen Beck but he's just showing video of her speech. The part where she gushes over Chairman Mao and calls him one of her two favorite political philosophers starts about 25 seconds or so into the video. Mind you, I don't begrudge her the right to follow Chairman Mao's philosophy as she is after all a liberal democrat and that's pretty much the party line. In fact I found her honesty very refreshing. My problems with Mao aren't his socialism as much as his methods. There are a few other references attributed to other members of the Obama administration. Unlike Beck, (I find him funny when he's not being preachy) I don't really give a crap about the Chairman Mao praise. I understand she's not talking about rounding up members of the opposition and having them shot she just loves communist theory. The thing is that when Trump "praises" Putin by calling him a strong leader the DNC propaganda arm of NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN and The NYT all went ape shit. It's silly and stupid.
