You're asking two different question:

1) Why modal text editor (editor with modes)
Answer: Because writing text and editing text are two very different operations. Cutting, copying, pasting, replacing, overwriting, searching, etc are done often enough that constantly holding down a modifier key becomes questionable for some. IANAVU.

2) Why something as big as Emacs over nano or JOE.
Because after a while -- maybe a long while -- you will want your editor to have additional feature. Maybe you want more windows. Maybe you want an in editor shell. Maybe you want automatic document complication on file changes with interactive output display. Maybe you want auto tab completion. Maybe you want syntax highlighting. Maybe you want (this is my personal favourite) snippets for auto "template" completion. Maybe you want to run your music editor inside the editor. Maybe you want to run lisp directly. Maybe you want to organise notes in org-mode. Maybe you want to (i presume) use a file editor. Hell, maybe you want to have a video or Youtube vid run in a little corner of the screen while you write code.

All of these things are possible with a few keystrokes in Emacs. Once you introduce yourself to the commands for opening(Ctrl-x, Ctrl-f) and saving files(C-x C-s), switching between buffers, and maybe opening news windows, all the possibilities of become open to you if someday (and that day eventually comes) you want your computer or editor to do a little bit more than just edit text.

Regarding the "point", what was it? I think the significant point is that Bradley has been severely abused while in detention and that for a bunch of psychos who regularly engage in activities such as those illustrated in Collateral Murder, there is not only an advantage in discrediting Bradley, but in the method chosen, a lot of sadistic satisfaction at breaking the man's will. The problem can actually be solved very easily.

The F-5 was built entirely on spec by Northrop Grumman before there were any firm orders from the US government or indeed any other government and it went on to a long and storied career, eventually being sold to and used by just about every allied air force in the world. It was a cost effective, high performance and durable jet fighter, a product of the time when US engineering still meant quality and defense companies actually cared about the quality and value of their products, not just their profits.

Heck, Sony even managed to develop a capacitive touchscreen which works when wet (though not when immersed). If Apple didn't bother testing to make sure that their new virtual Home button worked with common glove finger pads and pens (e.g. hot dog on a stick), that's a pretty huge design failure.

But I'm a firm believer in math - aka reality - and to replace our grid capacity with solar and wind would require paving over most of the southwest, and limit any growth to current levels.

Evidently you went to the Donald Trump University majoring in Made Up Statistics and minoring in Bogus "Facts". For a person who professes to "believe in math" there is a distinct lack of it in you posts. It would take something like 11-12 million acres or about 2000sqft per person. That's about 0.6% of the land mass of the US. A lot of space sure but nothing remotely close to "paving most of the southwest". Furthermore much of that acreage could come simply by utilizing already existing rooftops. Furthermore wind power is a thing and doesn't require nearly the area that solar does. In fact it can even be off shore and in areas where solar is highly impractical. Of course it's a moot discussion since there is no way we are going to go 100% solar/wind.

A tiny nuclear fission reactor like on our aircraft carriers could power a small city cleanly and safely for decades, for relatively low cost.

Fission reactors are sort of clean. Until they aren't. And when they aren't they REALLY aren't clean. In many cases nuclear fission is the least worst alternative available to us today but let's not pretend it doesnt cause any sort of pollution. Nuclear waste and fallout (when things really go wrong) are serious problems with no particularly good solutions. Nuclear reactors on aircraft carriers are maintained by the military under military discipline without any profit motive and at enormous expense. There is a reason we only put reactors on a handful of ships - they are hugely expensive and challenging to maintain safely. Just because something works in a military setting doesn't mean it will work in the civilian world. While arguably the technology would be transferable, the economic case for it is FAR weaker.

Fusion could be an answer but we haven't figured that one out yet and it doesn't look to be in the cards for a few more decades. Right now it's just science fiction for all practical purposes.

>5 1/4" floppy drives had SECTORS, and they were 256 bytes each.....not BLOCKS of 512 bytes.

You're omitting several, key details:

* DOS 3.3 and ProDOS had sectors of 256 bytes each.
* ProDOS grouped *two* sectors together as a single block.
* A sector could be as long (or as short) as you wanted.

i.e.
- Copy ][+ versions before 4.0 had 1 sector the entire track which is why it was able to load so fast.
- Prince of Persia and other Broderbund game used Roland Gustafsson's RWTS18 which had 18 sectors / track -- it did this by having 6 sectors that were 768 bytes each.
