Re:PC Gaming History
Mech Warrior I on a 3Dfx Voodoo card.
I can't imagine a Voodoo helping this much, so you must be thinking of MW2.

PC Gaming History
*Biggest* triumphs in video game history --
1 -- Ultima VI "Stones" played through the Roland MT-32.
***Absolutely surreal***. Validated MIDI as a legitimate sound source for PC gaming.2 -- Ys Book I/II "First Steps Toward War" played though the PC Engine/Turbo Grafix 16 CD". Raising the bar out of this universe -- need the jaws of life to get my jaw off the floor. Bark, Bark!!
3 -- Mech Warrior I on a 3Dfx Voodoo card. This is **Game over** -- I would need a Ben Carson lobotomy to bring me back to this plane. Maybe I had one?? There were probably a few ex-SGI employees that well, I'll leave it at that -;)
History.
Nobody has surpassed **any** of these milestones --- yet.
Maybe Occulus and the VR ppl. are the next wave. We'll see. I'm hopeful, but they have a high bar to overcome.

This is pretty clever
I know everyone has seen the example where two waves meet up and their amplitudes add up, creating a huge peak. While the arithmetic of that is correct, the actual dynamic behavior of waves is a lot more complex. What you see as a wave is only a partial instantaneous manifestation of an energy pulse in the water. Waves do not propagate in isolation like you learned in high school. As with coupled pendulums, there is energy transference between individual waves.
So instead of taking the arithmetic approach - measuring every wave, and trying to predict when a rogue wave will happen - they're measuring wave train profiles and analyzing how they'll combine and interact. The calculations are a lot more complex, but you need a lot fewer measurements and calculations. -
Really?
When you typed "...Trump is a racist blame-and-excuse machine..." what criteria were you using? Was it the usual dishonest leftist troll criteria that "anybody who disagrees with me is a racist/sexist/homophobe"? Were you claiming that he is a racist because he thinks we have a legal right to defend the nation from a decades-long invasion and colonization by people breaking our laws aided by employers breaking our laws and politicians breaking their oaths of office? If your argument is that in opposing ILLEGAL immigration, he is a RACIST, then please consider that perhaps the REAL racists are the defenders of illegal immigration who simultaneously push-down the wages of many black and hispanic AMERICAN CITIZENS by importing poor minorities from the third world who they assume will work for slave wages and eventually become permanent Democrat voters - based on purely racist assumptions.
Tell me: were you outraged when Democrat Senate leader Harry Reid said Obama was electable because he was "clean" and lacked a "negro dialect", or when Democrat Vice President Joe Biden announced that you cannot go to a 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts if you don't have a slight Indian accent, and then clarified, saying "I'm not joking"???
The selective faux outrage by leftists over supposed racism is always fascinating to behold. Personally I could never be a member of the political party that has been fixated on skin color for its entire centuries-long history:
(a) Every single black slave was owned by a Democrat or an independent - no Republican in US history owned a slave of any color.
(b) Republican President Lincoln led the war to kill enough Democrats to get them to give up their slaves - and they then assasinated him.
(c) Democrats created the KKK and its founders were honored guests at Democrat national conventions. Early KKK posters and leaflets called for lynchings for BOTH "negros" AND Republicans.
(d) Democrats created the "Jim Crow" laws and every black child blocked from a white school was opposed by a Democrat governor.
(e) Famous Democrat "Progressive" president Woodrow Wilson ordered the segregation of the US federal government along racial lines. Before he was sworn-in in 1913 the federal government had NEVER been so segregated.
(f) As the public tide was turning against them the Democrats simply changed their tactics for owning and controlling blacks; they offered them enough free stuff to survive - as long as they destroyed their families and moved back onto the plantation (in the form of government housing which you only remained eligible to stay in as long as you never tried to save money or start a business - the thresholds were low enough that you'd get booted out if your economic situation improved but before it improved enough that you might become independent). LBJ was an obnoxious racist
who simply wanted to lock-in the Black vote this way, and Democrats at the time were not willing to pass his voting rights act - he needed the Republicans in congress to pass it.
(g) in the post-sixties decades, they have attempted to keep blacks on their plantation by claiming all the redneck racist Democrats mysteriously punished the Democrats for the civil rights bills.... by joining the Republicans who pushed those bills over the finish line. It's mostly liberal Democrat educators speaking to ignorant young kids who push this non-sequitur
(h) Democrats allocate political jobs and even tickets to their national conventions with racial quotas, and then they attack Republicans as "racist" for NOT being willing to play that game.
(i) After decades of taking blacks for granted and doing nothing to improve their situation, the Democrats are now shifting to hispanics and using them to push down the wages of blacks ---- whatever skin-color-groups they need to have power will do and with hispanics having greater numbers, the blacks can go under the bus that Democrats used to demand they occupy the back seats of.

Re:what point? Libertarians vote fasist
Wow...you REALLY haven't been paying attention to what has been going on, have you? When a speaker that the SJWs don't agree with comes to speak, do they do like what we now call "classical liberals" and simply hold up signs expressing their views, maybe actually try to debate the person on their positions?
Nope because the SJW positions are so whack-a-doodle that rational debate is right out so instead you have SJWs and BLMs bathing in fake period blood and screaming about "muh privilege"...to a gay man. Which is their oppression Olympics was to be actually believed would be one of the most oppressed groups out there. But of course it doesn't have dick to do with oppression, or thug lives, or anything else but good old classical Marxism taken straight out of the little red book. Their entire platform is "the rights of the group matter more than the rights of the individual" which is nothing but straight up Marx.
So yeah people are long past fed up with frankly how extreme the left has gotten and just as we saw in the late 70s we are about to have a VERY hard swing back to the right. People are being tired of being told they are to blame for things their ancestors didn't even do (just FYI less than 5% of Americans alive today can trace ancestors back to actual slave owners) or being told that the core tenants that America was founded on, that if you work hard, study, and better yourself you can get ahead, is total bullshit and all that matters is what your sex or skin color is and how that ranks on some oppression scale.
And at the end of the day who will be to blame? The left, just as it was the right who was to blame when they let the moral majority and neo-cons run the centrists out of the party and fucked them for the better part of the decade. Americans are all about fairness and equal opportunity, but the extreme left that has taken over the party do not care about equal opportunity but equality of outcome and between that and the SJW faction grabbing the mike at every chance to act like whiny Captain Planeteers? Yeah get ready for a BIG hard right shift. Mark my words...2016 is gonna be 1979 for the left all over again.

Re:Trump will press the big red button
Maybe. But have a look at a speech by a guy that really did launch a World War (Hitler). I mean, Hitler was angry. Right there in the first few minutes of his speech he talks about how the Nazi party was founded to be ideologically pure. He was on a mission to either see Germany rule the world or be destroyed in the attempt.
It's not impossible that Trump would get involved in a bunch of little banana republics wars that would escalate into an all-out global nuclear war. But that could happen with Hillary, too.
And the key point is that Trump doesn't seem like the kind of guy who is so invested in his ideology that he would be willing to die for it - which would be a big risk to him if he did launch an all-out global nuclear war.
No, the biggest danger with Trump is the same as with Hillary - that ordinary people will continue to live out miserable desperate lives - as things slowly get worse and worse.

There is an answer to bad speech
The answer to bad speech is not controls on speaking, it's more speech. However the liberals out there don't want more speech because that means that logic wins out over feelings. The liberals' answer to "bad" speech is "shut up".
Andrew Klavan explains this well:

Re:what a laugh
To be fair, Megan Kelly was a corporate lawyer before becoming a TV host. She is not a wilting daisy, and not many people can stand up to her easily.
I didn't even think that much of her until after Trump and her had their little exchange, and he couldn't handle her then made his creepy menstrual cycle rip, then I did some research. And you are right, she's pretty formidable.
Oddly enough, the only person I saw who handled her well was of all people Michael Moore, who pretty much charmed her.
The setup was ready for a regular Fox piece, and he just charmed her overwhelmingly. Here's the clip - kinda fun to watch, because after disarming her, it became a nice back and forth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re:If apple can write software to decrypt...
They have said: > Yes, it is certainly possible to create an entirely new operating system to undermine our security features as the government wants.
Well, I agree that those two statements SEEM somewhat contradictory at first; but they can actually both be true.
The iPhone that was used in San Ber'Dino (sorry, Zappa reference!) was an iPhone 5c. According to Wikipedia, that particular model was shipped with iOS 7, which I infer Apple could break into.
So, what we DON'T know (at least I don't) is whether that phone was ever Updated to iOS 8.
That means it could easily be true that Apple could break into this particular phone (if it is still running a version of iOS 7), and that it is impossible for Apple to break into a phone that is running iOS 8 (or above). -
Re:Money will return once China lands on the moon
China, Europe or India have to put people on the moon to relight US population's push to get back to the head of the race.
Almost right, but not quite. What will get US motivated is the Asteroid Belt. The first one to colonize the Asteroid Belt will rule the solar system. Chelyabinsk was a wake up call to the Russians. The belt is chock full of nuke-scale explosive ordinance (rocks + velocity + impact = boom). Chelyabinsk meteor released 20 to 30 times the destructive force of Hiroshima, it just didn't strike ground... had it been made of the right stuff our current funding for NASA would be solved, just sayin'.
Bonus, [most] meteor impacts don't leave behind a radioactive mess. Nudge a few rocks in the right direction and you can intercept any incoming ordinance before it strikes the Belt Base. Sling a rock and destroy any city on any planet or moon. Strap a nuke to a rocky body and blow it up as it reaches orbit, you get an orbital debris cloud.
He who rules the Asteroid Belt rules the Solar System.
Until then, it seems simply too hard to get enough political support.
Fuck political support. NASA is just the propaganda arm for the NRO. US has no problem getting anything into space. We still launch the biggest rockets in the fucking world, they just carry the heaviest [spy] satellites in the world. We only partner with the Ruskies for LEO bullshit as a matter of diplomacy and as a front to give them some cash. We stopped going to the moon once our ICBM engines were fully tested (that's the real reason we even had a public facing space program).
You want support? Tap into some that's coming from our military, who has already advanced the space race so far in secret that you wouldn't believe what we're capable of today. NASA is not at the forefront of space exploration. We should fund the shit out of them to manufacture public consent to get the ignorant masses to do what's best for humanity, but I'm not surprised or losing any sleep over the future of NASA's Space Pork spending.

Re:Monkey to God in under 6 seconds. . .
Your link doesn't really back up your claim. .
.Someone who has learned enough economics to use terms like "diminishing return" should also have been taught that knowledge capital does not apply. Does lighting someone else's candle diminish your own lit candle? It is as if you are saying that water boils at 100 C, so evaporation can only occur at 100 C. I could go to the trouble to explain/prove everything myself, or I could just point you to the textbook ("Authority") saying otherwise for brevity. At the end of the day, the onerous is on you to prove that generally accepted facts and theories are wrong.
If you could go back in time and ask people in the early 20th century what the early 21st century would be like I think they'd be surprised not by all of the technology that looks like magic to them, but with how little has really changed.
Thanks, this goes back to my point of, "If they are so advanced, then where are their giant horses!?" Technological advances have occurred in the most important areas for them to occur. That people have failed to realize where these were going to be in the past is merely a testament of their limited knowledge/foresight and says nothing of the technological progress that has taken place. Your comment here says more about yourself than anything else.
Some technologies (like nuclear) are extremely centralized, government regulated, and monopolistic. Then there are technologies that are on the opposite spectrum. The latter is improving exponentially . -

It's worth noting that Apple was the longest hold out from PRISM and joined them only after Jobs passed away.

Re:No winners here.
Nvidia has been distributing their proprietary drivers this way for well over a decade now.
And this is what they got for that.
Law or no law, facts are facts. I hope you don't try to defend further your indefensible position that facts are irrelevant when technological matters become legal matters.

Re:Army changed the powder
Heh, the ones I'm thinking of were horrific with both a sidearm and a rifle. The kicker was, they *were* part of the tactical teams. However, in their defense, they had a few people who were the exception to the rule. They actually had some decent sniper talent. One of the range's we used to frequent was good up to 800 yards. It could be windy, raining, etc and there were exactly two of them who could plink at that range with great accuracy. They were pretty good.
That's saying something... I know, as in know personally, a number of Scout Snipers. (Those guys are phenomenal. Each and every one.) These guys were good in comparison with them. They weren't (I don't think) as good - but still pretty damned good. If you've ever seen a sniper at work, they're amazing. Or at least the skilled ones are. So, they had at least a couple of good snipers. We all kind of shot together for a couple of years, actually. Almost every weekend, when we had time, we'd be out there with our personal firearms.
If you've never actually seen what the training and testing looks like for the USMC Scout Sniper, you might want to check that out. These guys weren't *that* good but were pretty good. They were also not really scouts - I can speak only for their marksmanship. I like to think I'm pretty good - in fact, if you don't mind my saying so, I am pretty good. I am nowhere near that good. I can buy all the equipment I want, spend all the hours practicing I want, and I'll never be that good. It's a long list of things that goes into the training for a Scout Sniper and the testing is brutal. I do mean brutal.
If you want, I'll see if I can dig you up a documentary or you can probably find one on your own - I'm sure there's at least one. Just search for "USMC Scout Sniper" and filter for long. I'm sure something will pop up. Serious - it's impressive and the display of marksmanship is amazing. Seriously, toss a documentary on in the background and give it a watch/listen - unless you're already familiar. I'll even go *find* you one, if you want.
Hell, let me see what I can find... Alright, I didn't watch this but it is Nat Geo so it might be good:

Fork yeah!
Totally by chance, I'm watching an old Cantrill presentation (2011) and he'd got a slide at 24m28 which reads:
"Contrary to public claims by some ex-Sun employees, this was not done to be deliberately GPL incompatible."
Fork Yeah! The Rise and Development of illumos
He calls CDDL "file-based copyleft" and says it was explicitly designed to allow combined works with proprietary elements.

Well, looks like the genocide of the male gender is one step closer.
It's far easier for elites to control women through apparent social norms...
And lest you think me in jest, there are many feminists clamoring for just this sort of technology for years; Meanwhile, artificial wombs are taboo.

Re:Lawyer: Linux is not *quite* GPL
Since pretty much the beginning, the Linux developers approved, condoned, and encouraged binary, non-GPL modules.
Being a lawyer doesn't make you out of touch. "Linux developers" have never approved of or encouraged binary, non-GPL modules, quite the contrary. Tolerated, or looked the other way is the most you could say. Linus has at times expressed a permissive attitude, but he has also said this. What you need to remember is that it's not Linus's kernel, it's only partly his. Anyone who holds copyright in it (thousands) is entitled to make an issue of illegal distribution if they wish.

Re:Misses the point
Here is an actual crash of a drone of the type most people use. I had an eagle attack my drone in the desert taking out one of the props:
Drone crash after eagle attach
It becomes readily apparent how it tumbles and tries to right itself, slowing down the decent. It did not power itself into the ground. In fact, the only damage was the broken prop. The rest of the plastic craft was just fine. -

Great question! Here's why.
Why would you have a remote control feature on a car enabled at ALL?
When the car's on a 240 volt AC charger, sitting outside on a cold day, you trigger the heat fifteen minutes before you leave the building.
That way the car's interior and battery pack are heated up using the AC connection and not the battery. Since the heater is the single most power-hogging load in the vehicle, and batteries are more effective when warm, this extends your driving range significantly.
Remember the Leaf is not a Tesla - it's an otherwise great car with the Achilles Heel of very limited range. It only goes about 80 miles before you have to do a 5-hour charge at 240 VAC (or 15 hours if you are using a regular 15 Amp 120 VAC socket, which is absurd compared to Tesla's 20 minutes supercharge providing a couple hundred miles). So anything you can do to extend range is worth the effort!
My wife's Leaf has a seven day program that conditions it environmentally before she leaves every morning while it's still on wall power. If she had to make an unexpected trip, perhaps to take a child to the emergency room in the night, she'd use the remote to override the normal programming and heat the car while we got everyone dressed for the drive. It's a valuable feature.
But am I worried about someone running the battery pack down by seizing remote control? In a word, no. Unless you live in a city it's incredibly unlikely; somebody would have to make a special trip to my house or my wife's workplace during a hellish freeze in order to pull it off, and the car would be plugged in under those circumstances so the battery would never run down anyway.
And even if you live in a city, where people can get close enough to your car to do this while you're off doing something, is this really a threat? I mean, sure, I've been cursed at, threatened and coal-rolled for driving a Prius, and presumably electric car owners get taunted and abused worse than hybrid drivers, but the neanderthals who hate low-emissions cars are not really very dangerous opponents. Just look at the anti-environmentalists here on slashdot - not exactly the brightest bulbs in the pack, now are they? I'd laugh in their faces if they'd get close enough, but the haters are losers, not even brave enough to get out of their cars, so I have to laugh at them from a distance.

I'd like to see these things take off as a sport
I watched some of the initial drone racing promotional videos and thought cool but kind of ignored them.
Since that time there's been many more videos come out and I'm beginning to get the idea as a video game player that these things can really be appreciated by the kinda 10->50y/o crowd who grew up with gaming. With the FPV goggles the guys have for them, the performance of the things and the complexity of some of the 'tracks' they do actually seem kind of great.
I wonder if these things could be this generations F1 at some point? Here's a couple of videos
