Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious single pulses recently discovered in routine L-band pulsar searches. They are very brief (~milliseconds), and exhibit dispersion and spatial distribution which suggests large -- possibly cosmological -- distances. Although they probably occur at a rate of about 10,000/sky/day, they are quite difficult to find due to the very narrow field of view of suitably-equipped radio telescopes, and also due to the prevalence of interference at L-band. In this talk I will give an overview of instrumentation that has been developed to detect FRBs in large numbers and with better information (polarization, improved localization, etc.). In particular I will describe GBTrans, a new instrument we (VT, WVU, and NRAO) have developed at Green Bank for continuous real-time FRB searching, and plans for a new instrument called LASA (Large Array of Small Arrays), which would be purpose-built for this task. Both systems feature real-time continuous acquisition and analysis of about 400 MHz of L-band spectrum, using FPGAs to compute dynamic spectra and GPUs to search 1000s of possible dispersion signatures simultaneously. LASA would replace the GBTrans 20-m dish antenna with 2 m x 2 m arrays of 256 tightly-coupled crossed dipole antennas each, forming 16 independently-steerable beams simultaneously. This problem requires mitigation of copious interference from active users of the L-band spectrum, and I'll explain how we manage to do that in real time as well."

There's no benefit in the PS4 having eight weak-ass cores. If the complete package was powerful because of it then fine but it's not, it's a weak CPU. Even the AMD pieces at ~4 GHz with 8 cores can't keep up with 4 core Intel ones for gaming.
The i3 6100 as said beat the FX-6300 in many games regardless of the later having three times the more cores and it's clocked twice as high as the PS4!

The AMD CPUs perform like shit and AMD knows it.

Also you got links to videos of actual game-play and I guess that's what matter the most, that account for less optimization with the PC games and for the lacks DirectX 11 have with poor multi-threading and draw calls which use up lots of processing power but it still perform ok.

The AMD chips at-least on PC encode video with more of a penalty than the Nvidia chips to. The GTX 950 have encoding on the graphics card so it drop close to nothing for encoding game videos.

Of course you don't see enough of a difference! This $600 PC with an i3 6100 + GTX 950 wasn't there to BE SUPERIOR TO THE PLAYSTATION 4! It was there to state what a PC with at-least as good performance would cost!
Sure you can spend $3000 on a gaming-PC but then it will be much much much much better than the PS4, for $1000+ you could get the i5 + GTX 970 PC but then that would totally smoke the PS4 and give you ~60 FPS gaming in Ultra in 1080p in more or less all titles. The PS4 doesn't do that and yes a PC which do that cost $1000 or thereabout (maybe even more, it will do more than 60 FPS in some titles of course.)

The i3 6100 + GTX 950 is still enough to beat the Playstation 4 and that cost as said around $600 or 50% more than the similar PS4 console.

I actually came across a homebrew reboot of what could have been accomplished with an 8k cartridge back in the day.

If back in the days you had easy access to a more powerful machine with a good set of crafting tools (editor, assembler) and tools to help you test (emulators), access to possibility to test multiple iteration of your code on the actual hardware (cheap flashcards), and plenty of time (it's hobbyist's).

All that in addition to plenty of knowledge (we're in a post demo-scene period. Plenty of knowledge, known tricks, etc. in addition of all the details that the hobbyist has learned about the platform).

I'm not saying that this a minor feat to manage to cram such a game into a 8k cart.

I'm just reminding that back then, developers where mostly working on *paper*.
Tools and experience is not substitute for talent, but they supplement the talent quite nicely.

The Samsung EVO 850 250 GB SSD cost more than a 1 TB 7200 RPM drive but sure, go ahead and replace it with a 1 TB or 500 GB drive if you want to. SSDs cost about 8 times more / GB than HDDs and if the PS4 got a 500 GB HDD in this case I had replace it with an SSD only half the size so you shouldn't be complaining. I used the SSD because it's quick and the space may be enough for some (Steam let you download games as many times as you want anyway ..), replace it with a cheaper 1 TB HDD or a 2 TB HDD for about the same price if you want too, I don't care.

Some professional "hardware" runs on embedded real-time Linux - all that DAW functionality isn't done by tubes anymore, there's an OS inside that workstation. And that OS is not Windows.

You will want to download a real time kernel and use Jack, not Alsa, for professional audio work.

For everything in this package and the technology involved, I'm blown away by this price point. My original guess was that the HTC Vive was going to cost $1000 at launch. The lighthouses are a particularly complicated and likely expensive piece of hardware. From what I could gather from releases, they are using similar Laser mapping technology as can be seen on the Google Car. Because of this I was suspecting each lighthouse to cost at least $100-150 each.

Nope, even easier. Simulation here. They basically just do synchronized sweeps every couple milliseconds, and when the headset sees a pulse, it can figure out when during the sweep it received the pulse and therefore where along the axis it is. Sweep along the other axis, and you get your position. Two lighthouses so you can turn around, and you're set.

... which is the question I have. All of the dev kit and test versions we've seen show the Vive as being wired. Is the consumer version still going to be wired, and if so, are you going to end up tripping over the cable or ripping your computer off the desk? All of the reviews I've read about CES demos and such had a dedicated "cable management guy" following the reviewer around and making sure he didn't trip. I don't have one of those... is the Vive still going to be right for me?

I think you're mostly right, though... The Oculus controllers do seem a bit better, although the Vive controllers don't seem bad. The ability to move around with the Vive may be less important, with most people playing games while sitting down. However, dat front facing camera tho...
