In his 1970 book Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era, Brzezinski wrote the following.
"The technetronic era involves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values. Soon it will be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and maintain up-to-date complete files containing even the most personal information about the citizen. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities."
This is the natural outgrowth of private property + military industrial complex coupled with allowing small groups of people unlimited accumulation of wealth. It's the rich and corporations vs everyone else. We're seeing the true face of class war, aka the cold war never really ended and anyone who isn't rich is being impoverished in a one sided class war where the rich are going for full on slavery. See what happened to greece here:
"American historian D.F. Fleming, writing of the post-World War II period in his eminent history of the Cold War, stated that “Greece was the first of the liberated states to be openly and forcibly compelled to accept the political system of the occupying Great Power. It was Churchill who acted first and Stalin who followed his example, in Bulgaria and then in Rumania, though with less bloodshed.”

The (mass surveillance) by the NSA and abuse by law enforcement is just more part and parcel of state suppression of dissent against corporate interests. They're worried that the more people are going to wake up and corporate centers like the US and canada may be among those who also awaken. Massive Scientific Visualization
This is seriously useful for massive scientific visualization... where raw rendering speed isn't always the bottleneck (but of course, faster is better).
We do simulations on supercomputers that generate terabytes of output. You then have to use a smaller cluster (typically 1000-2000 processors) to read that data and generate visualizations of it (using software like Paraview ( http://www.paraview.org/ ) ). Those smaller clusters often don't have any graphics cards on the compute nodes at all... and we currently fall back to Mesa for rendering frames.
If you're interested in what some of these visualizations look like... here's a video of some of our stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re:the breech is locked WHILE THE SLIDE MOVES
Again, you are in part right, and in part wrong.
In standard pistols, the breech is unlocked after the slide moves a distance relative to the frame, and the slide continues to move after the breech is unlocked.
Right. This takes place in the span of about an eighth of an inch, depending on the pistol in question. When the barrel stops against the recoil surfaces in the frame, the full recoil force of the still accelerating bullet is transferred to the frame, and no more to the slide.
This movement of slide relative to the frame means that the slide has momentum (recoil energy) that it has not yet transferred to the frame.
Yes. True. However, only relatively small amount of momentum is ever transferred to the slide. It would be interesting to figure it out, but as a WAG, I'm saying it's less than 5% of the bullet's momemtum. Clearly, the stopping of the slide slide is not responsible for the recoil feel of the firearm. Check out this high speed video which was intended to demonstrate a potential failure on the Glock pistol, known as "limp wristing"--it actually demonstrates the ideas we're talking about pretty well. It's obvious that the recoil effects are fully propagating, even as the slide is barely past the unlocking stage.
In fact, if you inspect this video the bullet is quite some distance down range before the slide unlocks. What's responsible for the recoil? The acceleration of the bullet. If it's out of the picture (in the figurative and literal sense), it's not transferring momentum any longer.

First of all, rotors don't "warp" in the sense that you're implying. Vibrations from a "warped" rotor aren't from deformed metal, its from uneven brake pad material deposits that can come from improper bedding procedures or operation outside of ideal operating temperatures.
Says someone who clearly has spent more time reading about rotors than working on rotors.

Or are you suggesting 8/1000ths of invisible pad material?

I would also like to pile on the generalizing bandwagon, and say that the code that old people *think* is maintainable is not. The fact that they refuse to learn or use any new technologies causes them to think that any code that uses them is unmaintainable (because they don't know how), and that their code is maintainable because it follows best practices from the 80's.
Yes, you are generalizing & IMO incorrectly so.
In my experience older developers (incl me) do not "refuse to learn or use any new technologies". However, they will probably be more skeptical about them than some younger folks. This is a *good thing*.
That said, I think we can all agree that Mongo DB is Webscale.

Re:Land of the free? Home of the brave?
So in my lifetime America has gone from "give me liberty or give me death" to a bunch of scared sheep repeating "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear"?
And the real problem with that latter statement is quite simple: If you have nothing to hide, but are politically dissident, you have to fear for your life even in 1st world "free speech" countries. The mistake the common person makes is twofold: 0. They are not politically active (esp. not Politically Incorrectly). 1. They don't realize how ruthless their country can be, esp. when it is being infiltrated by agents from other countries without your nation's best interest in mind.
Someone attempting to overthrow your country can infiltrate the state's security apparatus and use it against you. The same goes for spying on work email / internet traffic: Someone trying to get you fired can simply pay off an IT guy to plants false evidence against you, and because "what are the chances of that happening" is the first response, it is very effective. This is also a method by which other nation states infiltrate your companies, gain power, and lobby for their own kind.
Considering that the nation state knows that NSA is the largest single point of failure from a security perspective, and thus the greatest threat to national security for the politically active person (esp. those aligned strongly to the beliefs of their own government), it is obvious that the welfare of the citizens is not what is meant by "National Security". "Workplace Security" has the same meaning as "National Security", in that it is to protect the establishment from YOU, not you from badguys.
The answer is to show them the security apparatus by getting more people politically active. However, you need to show them the true history of their country, not the propaganda they've been fed their whole lives. Once you've done that, suddenly those people are considered "the greatest threat to national security". No, I'm not even kidding.

Re:Surface Pro vs iPad Pro
First off I'd say that the Surface Pro 4 SHOULD kick the iPad Pro's ass for one simple reason: it's an actual computer, running an actual desktop OS
Right. Because the marketplace spoke SO loudly that that's EXACTLY what they wanted for the PREVIOUS DECADE that Windows-Based Tablets existed (but sold nearly ZERO units across several brands and form-factors) BEFORE the iPad waltzed in and INSTANTLY ATE THEIR LUNCH.
Face it, other than the Slashdot crowd, the MAJORITY of people do NOT want everything to be a full-featured computer. They already HAVE abundant choices for that. They want something that handles what they do MOST OFTEN (browse, email, look at vids). That's where a tablet fits in.
Remember Jobs' comments at the debut of the iPad? That's the genius of the iPad.
Slashdot is full of nothing but a bunch of computer luddites. The general public has moved on. Why not Slashdotters? -
Re:editorialize much?
You probably got fooled because Microsoft created an advertisement that wasn't laughably bad. Of course you'd initially assume it was from Apple.
This is more their style.

Re:editorialize much?
Seriously, this is done all the time, especially by energy/oil corporations. Exxon has one similar right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrH19H-J4pU. What's the point? That both Apple and Microsoft used tired advertising techniques? Oh! But M$FT used them last, when they were more tired!
