Re:Zelda Wii
They did on the DS. Then they did again a few years later. (Warning sites use flash)
Both of those games are pretty good. The first has an idiotic feature of returning you to a central dungeon periodically but it's still a good game. Then again, I happen to think both Majora's Mask and Windwaker are great games, Twilight Princess is mediocre, and Link to the Past is way too overhyped so you may feel differently. I did really like Ocarina of Time and the original Legend of Zelda though.

Re:But it's CHINA!
But wait, wasn't Nintendo already doing that themselves?
(That's to say: when flicking your wrist is just emulating a button press, the game was probably not designed for the Wii.) -
I am missing Link too!

Portables rule! 1up's choices don't!
I've always loved handhelds. Due to the whole idea that a handheld system is designed both for quick sessions (on a bus, for instance) and long playing periods (such as on a plane or in a hotel room), I think handhelds force developers to adhere to what I consider the ideals of video gaming: both instant playability and depth that inspires replay.
Obviously, puzzle games are the perfect match for this. I don't quite agree with some of 1up's puzzle game highlights. Tetris and Klax are true classics, but I'm not convinced that Meteos and Lumines are of the same calibre. Meteos times every game mode except for one, tilting it far in favour of quick sessions. It just isn't that enjoyable for a long period. Lumines falls victim to the exact opposite - the time attack modes aren't much fun but the normal mode is very addictive. The only problem with normal mode is that a typical single session often lasts more than half an hour!
Puzzle games aside, some of their choices and omissions are quite odd.
Donkey Kong on Game Boy is an expanded version of the arcade original, with 100 puzzle-heavy levels. It turns a classic arcade game into an even better home game. I think it's one of the finest games ever made. Mario vs Donkey Kong is a pseudo-sequel to the Game Boy one, but it doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. It's decent but far from being a true classic.
Final Fantasy Adventure, also on Game Boy, is Seiken Densetsu 1 renamed to cash in on the Final Fantasy name. Seiken Densetsu was also renamed for the western market, to Secret of Mana. Yes, Secret of Mana is a sequel to this Game Boy game. And this Game Boy game is the best action/rpg the system has to offer - edging out even The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (which is also a fantastic game and a must-own). Too bad the GBA remake, Sword of Mana, was awful.
Besides Klax, the Atari Lynx had quite a few other arcade ports. Roadblasters is a lot of fun. Robotron 2084 isn't perfect (due to the Lynx lacking a way to duplicate the original dual-joystick control system) but is still decent. S.T.U.N. Runner looks fantastic on the handheld and is the best home port of the game we ever received, even if it does use sprite scaling instead of polygons. Speaking of sprite scaling, Blue Lightning is an Afterburner clone with better graphics than any of the pre-32X home ports of Afterburner. The gameplay measures up, too. Chip's Challenge, another original design for the system (though it was ported to plenty of other systems eventually) is a very fun action/puzzle game like The Adventures of Lolo. It also has a geeky love story plot that I'm sure most Slashdotters will appreciate :)
The Game Gear was perhaps the most lacking of all mainstream handhelds (ignoring utter shit like the Gamate and Watara Supervision), but even it had some very good games. Crystal Warriors and Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya are an excellent pair of strategy-RPGs with amazing depth for 8-bit handheld games. Bubble Bobble had a great port on GG (not -
Re:Gamecube is finally breaking out of its shellSo you think the Link featured back in the Eighties was adult and badass? With a visual style that wasn't cartoonish?
He wasn't THAT cartoonish. I mean, come on, he was Nintendo, so of course there was a little cartoon in him.
But there's a HUGE leap between cel-shaded link and original link. I mean hell, look at the original Legend of Zelda box. It was gold with a fairly badass looking shield on it. It wasn't colored in pastels and flowers and goofy looking animals and other ridiculousness.
Similar with Zelda 2...badass looking sword on a gold box.
Then, fast forward to this ludicrousness. We go from "teen" cartoony to 5-year old cartoony
Now don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against cel-shading. Frankly, I think it looks rather slick. But it ticks me off that they did it to Link. He looked teen-ish in early Zelda. But then they made him look like he was still in diapers.

Realistic Zelda?
I think Wind Waker and Twilight Princess both look great. Yeah I guess TP is impressive, but Wind Waker was beautiful in its own right. What really matters to me is how well they play... And I don't see where Wind Waker was such a departure... Was the original Zelda so realistic? http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/zelda/

Woohoo! New Zelda! (link to trailer)
I'm a Zelda addict. I've bought every Nintendo console solely for the purpose of playing every Zelda game in the series.
I've been waiting for more official news of the next game, so this is great news. And if anyone hasn't already seen the trailer, they've put up a Zelda:Twilight Princess preview page with it (and other stuff) on Zelda.com
This one looks incredible, though I was secretly hoping for another cell-shaded version -- at long as it was a longer game than Wind Waker ;) -

Re:2 things
Umm yea Nintendo never made many great RPGs
Back on subject, I wonder if they are planning something on the lines of the DS, were there would be a touch screen on the controller.
From the little that I've played with the DS, and from the reviews of other people it's pretty cool and innovative. Plus it just seems like an evolution to their GameBoy/GameCube connected titles, like The Four Swords and FF: Crystal Chronicles. -

Re:Zelda is the best game of all time!If you get stuck (or just don't want to spend time figuring out what to do next), check out the walkthrough from Nintendo. Full walkthrough, with maps and detailed directions, for both Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.
When you're done with that, the main Legend of Zelda site has some (less detailed) walkthroughs for all the other Zelda games (except WindWaker and Link to the Past/Four Swords, since Nintendo is currently selling guidebooks for those).

Nintendo = Story Greatness
First of all most gamers are leaning away from stories. They just want realistic graphics and realistic destruction. Sure on 8-bit systems all we had were pixles.. but we cared about those pixles. We wanted to know who they were and their motivations. Japan is the only reason stories aren't entirely dead because somehow over there they still care.
That said Nintendo is notorious for good story lines. Shall I drop a few names for you like Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Earthbound. Laugh as you may at SMB but outside of Mario Bros, and Super Mario Bros. 1 The main series has more plot than a lot of games out there now. Heck the character design of Mario Bros is award winning quality in and of itself.
Now storyline isn't everything. After it's a game we're playing. Not a movie. This was the mistake with Enter the Matrix. The finished product is more of an interactive Matrix Movie than a game based on a movie.
Gotta close with the greatest story line EVER. Also quite possibly the greatest game ever.

Re:Good old Atari...
What was novel in its day is now dull
I'm playing "The Legend of Zelda: a Link To the Past" on my GBA these days. Sure it's an old game that came out first on Super-Nintendo. But it is still fun, even with flat graphics! -
Re:3D gives you 2D
Good point. This comes to mind.

Re:Opinion is just as baseless.
My friend and I were able to try out the N-Gage at E3, as well as several games for it (some of which have been released and some not). Even before the system had launched and they were showing it for the first time to a wealth of gamers and industry people, the representatives were told by many people (us included) that the system just wasn't userfriendly and that the games were sorely under-par.
Red Faction: Truly awful. There's just no way to port a PS2 game to a hand-held console. While it does look vaguely like its papa, Red Faction plays like a... well, it doesn't really play. It runs at something like 10 FPS... until you try to use a weapon, and then it drops to about 1 FPS. Seriously, it's more like a crappy slideshow of a game.
There's hardly a point in executing tricks when everything looks like a blob of pixels regardless.
The narrow screen made it annoying to play, and graphically the levels were sparse and boring.
Their failure is most definatly not from lack of pre-release information. I guess they decided that they knew what we wanted more than we did. Miyamoto can pull that off occasionally, but let's not press out luck... -

Zelda!
In my opinion you should get a Gamecube and Zelda The Wind Waker.
I am 17, but I can't see why I 33 year old wouldn't like this game ;-) -
or you could get a console

It's a myth (the story, not the game...)
(I forget where I first read this. The official site now describes each game as a chapter in an ongoing saga, so I suppose the following is irrelevant. Still, it's another way of looking at things. If you don't agree then moderate me away...)
Each game in The Legend of Zelda series is supposed to be a retelling of the same myth. Hence the root story is always the same (Gannon kidnaps Zelda and tries to steal the Triforce, Link must battle to save both). The games taht varied from this path (Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask) are simply tales created to bolster the legend. (i.e. Link is such a great hero he must have done more than just defeat Ganon).
With each retelling of the myth the narrative becomes more complex and more great deeds are attributed to Link (hence the increasing depth and scope of each game). As long as this holds true in Link's Game Cube excursion, I won't mind the fact that ultimately I'm just saving the princess again. Ocarina of time had so much else going on there were a few times I forgot I was supposed to be saving Zelda at all...
That said, I do hope Link isn't a child through the entire GC adventure... He's cute and all, but he may be just a little too cute...
As for Mario... Well, some things never change. ;) -
