New Years Marathons
So for those of us who don't go "Out" for holidays and prefer sitting on
our asses, the extended TV theme Marathon is something of a tradition. Besides obvious choices
like watching all the Star Wars movies, what sorts of marathon
tv endurance tests are people planning? Buffy, Angel, Twin Peaks,
Iron Chef? What are you
gonna do?
I'll be watching every episode of the classic 'The Prisoner'
godzilla ll day yesterday, and twilight zone all day today.
nothing else on, as far as i'm concerned.
- Entertaining Bits from the Ancient Kernel Tree
Baywatch is all day on TNN January 1st.
I just hope to GOD that there isn't a Trading Spaces marathon, or I may have to get a divorce.
971 songs loaded in the iPod, iPod plugged into the stereo, iPod set to 'random' play.
Hot tub is hot, crank up the volume, break out the booze, unwrap the fireworks. 15 or so good friends show up & suddenly it's a party!
Let's just say some vodka, orange juice, Team Fortress Classic, and rcon rights on some of my favorite servers may make for some interesting gameplay come 11:30 or so...
Oh, and just to save the trolls some time:
- Yes, I am aware that makes me the biggest loser of all time.
- No, I don't really care, either.
You know what marathon I want to see? A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Marathon. Now that's what I'm talking about.

There's an Iron Chef Marathon?!?!
:-)
W00T!... gotta program my TiVo!
Iron chef, vodka, friends, and a scolding hot wok means great times at my place
Someone's gonna be melted before 2002!
Good quote, too many chars. Seriously, the slashdot 120 char limit sucks!
Jupiter will be very visible tonight with the naked eye. After dark, look just east of the moon for an unusually bright star. Doesnt matter what part of the world you're in, best viewing would be midnight +/- 1 hour in your local time zone.

FoodTV has a Unwrap marathon. Candies, drinks, ice cream and other sweet stuff. Not quite as cool as gozilla marathon, but it's an option when you get bored with gozilla.
Since I got TiVo (What? You *don't* have a PVR yet? TiVo, ReplayTV, home built...), marathons just fill up the hard disk a little faster, but I guess I miss out on the 18-hours-on-the-couch feeling :).
And the first marathon I've watched was the Thanksgiving Junkyard Wars special (with the aid of TiVo - took me all weekend to get through all the episodes).
...means that every day is sci-fi marathon day!
party tonight with friends. much anime will be watched, and many people will have their skulls bashed in during a drunken four way smash brothers melee brawl!
:)
:)
im going to propose we marathon an anime series, but as to which one it will be, who knows?
with any luck, itll be pingpong club.. that shit is insane
when it comes to tv marathons. ill prolly hit up the iron chef one.. but the comic shop has a 30% off sale on the 1st, and theyve got simpsons figurines that ive been eyeballing
no
I'm planning on watching the Alias Marathon, that is if I can remember which channel it is on. They are doing all the episodes and I'm definately going to TiVo them.
Do you Gentoo!?
I may not be going "out", but I'm still going to drink for 6 or 7 hours and get completely trashed with my friends. Now this may seem immature and silly, but it's sometimes good to get that out of your system once in a while and what better night than New Years Eve!
... Joe Joe .... yeah, Joey Joe Joe. He lives in Niagra Falls. ;)
Seriously though, some of us are just coming of horrendous exam schedules and need a good winding down before the next semester starts.
... and yes, I DO need alcohol for this. That's what it's in existence for. Well, winding down and getting nerds laid. LOL. Ok, some nerds. On occasion. Ok, rare occasion. Who? Oh, you know, my friend Joey
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY DRUNKEN NEW YEARS EVE!

...I'm planning a marathon viewing of the classic "Dark Screen."
Leave the TV off for a day! How's that for a resolution? (And no, don't replace it with 24 hours of Slashdot.)
Start a journal! Read a book! Volunteer! Pray for peace! Do something that you can feel good about. Trust me, a full day of Gilligan's Island won't do it.
Hehehe...
I've got a little over 400 hours of stuff I've downloaded off of usenet in Mpeg, ASF, or DivX format. Plug it into the good ol' TV out card, and let play.
Assuming that I can tear my wife's ass away from what ever huggy-feely design crap they're showing on HGTV, I'll be watching the entirety of Noir, Sadamitsu the Destroyer, and Inu Yasha. (There are currently about 50 episodes od IY that have been subbed... so at 24 minutes a piece I may not finish, even if I skip sleeping)
The next Slashdot story will be ready soon, but subscribers can beat the rush and slashdot the links early!
Same thing I do on weekends...play with and care for kids, keep the house somewhat de-filthed. That my friends is a marathon with no end! I have a life, lame tho it may be, and don't have time or patience for an extended TV marathon. Those who do, enjoy.
Tonight I'm going to be setting off nearly a hundred dollars worth of overpriced fireworks. They may be overpriced, but I consider having fireworks on New Year's Eve and the 4th of July to be just as essential a need as food and shelter. A New Year's Eve without the smell of gun powder in the air is something that I shudder to even contemplate.
My only political goal is to see to it that no political party achieves its goals.
This is truely the best time of the year. Five games (Humanitarian, Sun, Silicon Valley Classic, Liberty, and Peach) on today, and eight more in the coming few days.

For the last two months, we've had a large multi-channel "All things violent in Afghanistan" marathon."
Frankly, I'm all marathoned out.I'll be watching my collection of classic Akira Kurosawa films: Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low...and yes, The Magnificent Seven. While technically not a Kurosawa film, it is based on the Seven Samurai story, and come on, who can resist Charles Bronson and Yul Brenner kicking Mexican ass?

I, unfortunately, will be travelling most of today and tomorrow, so I won't get to see the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci Fi. So all of you need to watch it in honor of me.
What's cool is that instead of doing it strictly in order by episode, they're putting the "classics" on in prime time. Here are the lineups for both nights:
The prime-time lineup: Monday, 8 p.m., "Will the Real Martians Please Stand Up?"; 8:33, "To Serve Man"; 9:05, "The Dummy"; 9:36, "Eye of the Beholder"; 10:09, "The Howling Man."
Tuesday, 8 p.m., "A Penny for Your Thoughts"; 8:33, "The Masks"; 9:06, "The Hitch-Hiker"; 9:37, "It's a Good Life"; 10:09, "The Midnight Sun."
Trivia: Two of the above-mentioned episodes were turned into Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segments - which ones? (Could be more than two, actually, but I know of two for sure.)

Yahoo has good TV listings. Amazing what they will marathon on New Years' Day:
ESPN: World's Strongest Man competition
TLC: Seeing is Believing
Comedy Channel: Whose Line Is It, Anyway?
A&E: Magnum PI until 8 p.m., then Law & Order until 4 a.m.
Animal Channel: The Crocodile Hunter (starting at 5 p.m.)
Sci-Fi Channel: The Twilight Zone
History Channel: History's Lost & Found
Since my ex has our son this New Years', and my other of unknown significance left town yesterday, I'll be at home on my a** looking for a good TV marathon.
Alias would be a good one (since I missed most of the episodes), and so would Trading Spaces. I've already had Buffy DVD marathon, so no luck there. Failing these, I'll probably be continuing on the kitchen work that I've been procrastinating on -- touching-up, sanding, and priming drywall, then painting. Whoop-de-doo!
I'm doing a marathon viewing of the BBC series I, Claudius. Great performance throughout by Derek Jacobi, and I love Patrick Stewart's little wig.
It's not Mrs. Dew's favorite thing, but she tolerates "Clavdivs" once a year. See also this fact or fiction site.
Personally, I am going to leave the house, (gasp) go to a bar and get drunk with some friends. You see, I've learned something that the replies to this article would indicate that many here haven't... That hiding yourself from the rest of society (like staying home on New Years Eve) does far more to brand you as a geek than being seen out in your plastic-framed glasses talking about the latest kernal release. Life isn't high school; the cool guys won't pick on you anymore... Now they just ignore you which is fine by me.
I for one will sleep because I work 3rd shift and could not get New Years (eve or day) off, so I'll be sleeping all day.
Business as usual for the NOC crew.
ZOMG I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS ON MACINTOSH VERSUS WINDOWS, VI VERSUS EMACS, AND HOW YOU'RE NOT A DORK
At least looking through the TV program, it appears ;)
every station is offering an ad marathon only.
I'll run a vim+make+gcc marathon instead...
This message is provided under the terms outlined at http://www.bero.org/terms.html
has a nice boxed set of DVDs out. It's got every episode of Flying Circus ever. EVER. We wont be watching it marathon style on New Years, or maybe ever. But it's good to have.
The GeekNights podcast is going strong. Listen!
No, sorry, forgot - this is slashdot.
UKTV in Australia are running a marathon of Red Dwarf. I imagine all the Foxtel-equipped geeks would be watching that.

Gaming all the way! Who the hell needs TV when I've got Final Fantasy X?
Because hopefully the companies will start hiring again once they get their new budgets in January, and maybe I'll be able to find a job that sucks my left nut a little less than my current one. Though hitting monster.com, setting the search to all states and entering '"Doesn't Suck"' as a search phrase doesn't return any hits, which is too bad because that's exactly what I was looking for in a job. (Try "Hunter-killer robots" sometime too. The results are enlightening.)
I'm trying to teach myself to set people on fire with my mind... Is it hot in here?
I miss the TNT Godzillathons (and the clips they'd run over BOC before commercials), and especially the wretched "Hercathons" they would run around New Years--Edith Hamilton never told us about Hercules's trip to Peru (Hercules Versus the Sons of the Sun), now did she? :-)
A 70s/80s Buck Rogers in the 21st century ( I forget the exact title but the series appeared somewhere between 1973 and 198?) marathon. Then a Battle Star Galactica Marathon! ( I would even settle for Battlestar Galactica 1980 -- which I never saw).
Last year I watched all the Star Blazers series 3 Vidoes I had for New Years eve (I didn't have the whole series).
This year it might have to be all four DVDs of the Loduss War (the series & I probably spelled t wrong). It depends on if I can tolerate sitting infront of my Monitor that long! Now if I only didn't have to work a full day!
At the next eco-hypocrisy-meeting, count the private jets used to get to the meeting. Should be interesting to see that
So let me get this straight: Taco is going to spend New Years sitting on his ass, doing nothing. How is this different from what Taco does during the rest of the year?

Yeah, I know, I've probably pissed off about a thousand lonely TV-watching nerds with that sentence. But cut me some slack: I'm a slashdotter too; do you really think this sort of thing happens to me often enough that I can afford not to brag when it does?
What??? No 7th heaven marathon this year??? Is there no justice???

Basically I feel Kevin Smith has managed to make some of the funniest movies of all time and definantelly appeals to a ninche crowd. I personally own all the movies to date (Along with animated clerks, and a few View Askew comics), but I have yet to hit NJ to see the Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, where basically any View Askew fan woule be in heaven.
There are fun things to do in all the titles as well (besides drink that is),
1.) In every movie there is a reference to Star Wars
2.) In every movie there is a reference to hockey
3.) And in every movie Silent Bob talks at least once.
Basically an all around wholesome time. Of course I've already synced the clock on my computer so I will know the INSTANT it is new years ... so that oughta be fun too :-)
Happy New Years Everyone.

- Crocodile Hunter Marathon on AP ( check local listings )
Rules (Everyone drinks when):- Someone gets bit.
- The phrase "Croikey!" is uttered.

I'm inviting friends over to watch Das Boot (director's cut, three hours long with subtitles instead of crap dubbing) and Run Lola Run (chickflick, yeah, but the chick insisted.) When this gets old, it's dreamcast time! Crazy Taxi, the Quake 1 port, the Doom port, some old Mame roms, who knows. I know a gamepad isn't the best way to play an FPS, but trust me, the big screen makes up for it.

And of course, plenty of food. No booze, though - none of us is older than 18

Same here, every time SciFi runs TZ all day I usually have nothing to do or can do it near a TV.
And "Time Enough at Last" is one of my favorites, as well.

I recall Sci-Fi used to do Mystery Science Theatre 3000 marathons around Thanksgiving. I'd always be out of town during them, though.
I wish they'd ran a marathon of all owned episodes (Comedy Central included) one last time before shutting down the franchise for good.

Let's not forget that the greatest threat to Free Software, indeed to the entire computer industry as an open industry, is the entertainment industry, as represented by the RIAA, the MPAA, and others.
I don't watch much television anyway, but for New Years I'm making a point of leaving the damn thing off entirely. No movie rentals to put more money in the pockets of those who would like nothing more than to destroy my livlihood in order to protect their outdated cartel profit model. No TV period.
Indeed, the only DVD I've purchased since the DeCSS fiasco is Sporty's IFR course for (private) pilots, mainly because of its interactive test questionairs. At least that way my 3 year old, multi-regional player will get some use, and as I doubt very seriously Sporty's is a member of the MPAA I feel I can make the purchase in good conscience.
That having been said, I would encourage everyone to ignore slashdot's occasional promotion of Media Cartel Content (it still amazes me that the editors of slashdot either just don't get it, or just don't care), turn the TV off, go out, get drunk, maybe even meet a girl or two and wind up not sleeping alone. Remember, even if you're the quintissential nerd, she'll likely be too drunk to notice. Opportunity knocks.

Ok, anybody have any ideas? It's a Sony DVD player, about 2 years old. I put a DVD in, it tries to read it for a bit, then says "NO DISC" This happens with every disk I've tried.
I've got plans to use this tonight, and I don't really feel like buying a new one.

The lame ass Dems better pass that economic stimulus package and help their constituents go back to work instead of playing these political games. I got a quite unexpected pink slip today to ring in the "New Year" with and my wife and four kids are used to having a roof over their heads and food to eat. I know that's not as important as the Dems jockying for power, trying to take back the Congress. However, I don't want or need them to create anymore social programs, I want to go back to work.
Having a toddler puts a crimp in one's marathon parties.
But we used to, back in our bachelor days, rent movies and do the marathon thing. It was important, though, to get movies that served as "wallpaper"... nobody seriously watched them much, since there were always games going on (remember when Car Wars was fun?)
So we ended up with things like Cannonball Run marathons, Back to the Future marathons, "lite" things like that. Go figure.

Since they don't 'get it', they'll probably end up wishing it was a forced feeding of, well, 'regular' staples.
