Now, produce a "decentralized" P2P program that lets us find all the old ladies and 9 year olds who are trading mp3s and movies and destroy their souls forever with our blade of lawsuits +5! Suprnova: But... Damn... Pwned...
Apparently the judge never kept up with continuity...
Gyrich: Mastermold, you were designed to protect humans from mutants! Mastermold: Illogical. Mutants are humans; therefore humans must be protected from themselves.
..using their pdas/handhelds, how about donating them away to some of us poorer/.ers?
Seems some of you have as many as a couple sitting in drawers, on shelves, in the closet, or wherever; seems like such a waste. You wouldn't get any sort of good resale value on older pdas, but you could find a nice financially challenged college student (cough) who could use them for school and such things.
Think of the children!.. Or at least think of me:)
I knew there was a reason I went into biochemistry. Nothing like going to class and being outnumbered 2:1 by women.
Well that.. and the fact that I hate engineers. But mainly the women thing;)
Oh, and there really isn't anything less hard-science about biology AC; if anything you're applying math and chemistry on top of all the extra stuff you have to learn in the bio field. If you think it isn't hard science, you've never studied it.
Couple of points to add to this. Well, "couple" is mainly a gripe about the whole NetMD debacle.
First of all, if you're using OpenMG or the RealOne plugin, there's no way you're going to get anywhere near 32x transfer speeds. Sorry, not gonna happen. Maybe, maybe if you've got a good box and can recode the mp3s into atrac with a lot more speed, then maybe you'll hit 10x. Don't hold your breath however. However, if you use the Simple Burner with Nero DriveImage you can pick up some much more decent speeds overall; but it's much less drag and drop, playlist fiddling fun. But that's ok, at least with Simple Burner you can actually use the editing features of your MD (something which is unallowed when you upload with OMG or RO).
Oh, and to get 320 minutes on an 80 minute disc, you'll have to record in LP4; the lossiest setting, which works out to about 96ish kb/s, and that doesn't sound all that great (go ahead, compare a 96kb/s mp3 to a 192 kb/s one to see).
Course the LP quality is a pretty subjective problem; I can hardly hear the difference myself, though the OpenMG sucks no-matter who you are. None-the-less, I wish I had the $350CAD to buy an N505 + a remote (the American version of the 505 doesn't come with a remote), but alas, I suck:/ Arrr, poverty be a harsh mistress. Donations anyone?:)
Personally, I could give a flying futz about extras like behind the scenes footage, commentary tracks, and that sort of thing. I can't be alone in this view. I know a lot of people like em, but I don't find them interesting, plain and simple.
Extended movie however: I'm there. I can't wait for the extra 30 minutes of footage. I can see it now; 2 years from now, all 3 LotR DVDs are out w/ extended footage. Sit down on the couch with a funsize bag of funions & a couple 2L bottles of Vanilla Coke, and have a nice 12 hour LotR marathon!
I'll forgo the whole right/wrong diatribe and get right to the point: they'll never stop the piracy.
We'll tunnel, encrypt, do whatever it takes to do what we do. They may break down the current systems eventually (Kazaa etc) and sure that'll take out a lot of the userbase, but pirates have been around lots long. We can fall back to the days of irc & ftp. Back to trusted users and trusted connections. ISPs crack down even more? It's BBS time. It'll go on and on.
The only thing they'll ever accomplish if they keep pushing the way they are is to annoy and irritate their customer base. And although I'm no MBA, but I'm fairly certain that's bad for business..

Are you getting around it somehow, or just not realizing that you don't download that much?
If A, please let us know how. Only have 2 weeks left to jump ship from Sympatico & their 5gb cap. The plan is to jump to unlimited 3mb dsl, but I'd take cheaper unlimited cable..
Have YOU ever been to a galaxy far far away? Were you there a long time ago? And if so, could you please pass on the secrets on intergalactic space travel? And possibly plans to your time machine? Alternatively, if you have no time machine, could you tell us your secret to living a long time? Maybe you could sell these secrets.. Maybe we could be partners. If so, do you think I could get 10% of the profits?
What the hell am I talking about? Obviously I've gone crazy from watching AotC too many times.. I deserve way more than 10%;)
Hopefully Blizzard will drop their attack against Bnetd before the release.
They won't, but let's face it: it doesn't matter. Has the MPAA stopped shoving css & other protection down our throats? Nope. Is everybody still buying DVDs and going to see movies? Yep. Has RIAA stopped acting like complete strongarm jerks? Nope. Is everybody still buying music? Yep. Is Microsoft still bullying the crap out of small corps & OEMs? Yep. Is everybody still booting to Windows to play games? (I'm looking at you Taco) Yep.
We all get angry around here whenever some article is posted about evil corporation X, destroying small guy Y and screwing over populace Z. We're all up in arms about how we are boycotting them, and everyone should do the same. But we don't. We're just talk. Most of us anyway.
So don't hold any pretentions. We're all buying Warcraft 3 when it comes out, bnetd or no bnetd. We're gonna buy it, play it on our windows partition while listening a cd and playing a dvd in the background.
I'm getting modded down to flamebait aren't I? Crap.
Every time any sort of alternative fuel/transportation or whatnot comes around people ask if it will be the end of the use of oil.
It wont.
As long as there is oil left in the ground the large multinational corporations and every single oil mogul will not let this happen. There are plenty of good and efficient ways to replace the use of oil right now. Not gonna happen; the billionaires will never ease up on selling oil until there isn't an extractable drop left anywhere. Even then, they'll probably synthesize it themselves, strongarm the energy concerns, and sell it at incredibly high prices.
But hey, I'll be long dead before then. Until that day, screw em, I'm walking.
Minidiscs do not hold 700mb of data, they only hold 160mb(the 74 minute discs anyway, not 100% sure about the 80 mins.) There was once an actual minidisc data drive for the pc which failed pretty much because they were small capacity, though the fact that they were slow as frell also weighed in heavily.
I can't disagree about an actual mp3 holding md player though, that would be an incredible toy. Even at 160mb, with CAN$6 discs, it wouldn't be a problem. But hey, I'm fine until then with what I have. Recording real-time doesn't bother most of the real md fan(atics?). NetMD is available too, though majorly crippled by Sony's piracy protection.
It'll be a while before this Teoma thing can topple Google.
First of all, no cache. The cache in Google sort of sneaks up on you in its usefulness.. Whether it's because the website is down or because you're looking at an html version of a PDF or word document, you find that you're using the cache all the time.
More to the point though, how friggin slow is Teoma? I hope it's due to relative newness or something, because it's frightfully slow when running queries. Google flies, click search and the page comes back next to instantly (on a broadband connection anyhow), Teoma seems to be taking several seconds right now. I'd say Slashdot effect, considering where we are, but what kind of poorly designed search engine crumbles under the slashdot effect?
There are so many things wrong with this that I don't even know where to begin.
Like finding your young child who's wandered off in a shopping mall, or god-forbid been kidnapped?
Ok, I'm pretty much as tin-foil as you can get without actually being able to afford the tin-foil, and while I don't much fancy GPS, using it for something as beneficial as this even works for me.
Besides, what else is the illuminati gonna do with a constant track on my son, spy on him while he steals cookies??
holy lord, how did you manage a Dex of 19? I'm a magician and a martial artist and only ended up with a 17.
Easy; I'm a juggler. Seriously, take a second look at the questions again:
Can you juggle? Can you juggle a 4-ball shower? Can you juggle a 5-ball shower? Do you find it hard to catch an object (such as a ball) thrown at you? Do you find it hard to catch an object (such as a ball) thrown/hit in your general direction but not aimed for you to catch? Do you break, spill or fumble at least one object through clumsiness at least once every three months?
Half the questions are just generally juggling related. It felt like cheating really;)
More seriously, why the heck would he willingly give up his hd contents by giving out his password to the cops/feds? Ok, they might be all threatening and stuff, but if you know you're going to be heading to jail for what's on your box, how about, oh I don't know, not telling them?
Okok, I know it's easy enough to get around; dump the drive, grain the contents and you're there (or delete the *.pwl for the windows inclined). But let's think reasonably here; if you're going to be doing some "1337 h4x0r1n5", why the heck wouldn't you set up some kind of box self-destruct? Put a nice shiney red kill-switch somewhere with "Don't press unless of Emergency" written on it? Granted, I understand the some different agency can then give you grief for possessing unauthorize incindiary devices, but isn't it better than his what, 120 years in jail and $5.75 million??
While I don`t know much about the Gnutella network, I`m certain of one thing; this will cause a content split. Ok, it won`t be the great cataclysm, but it`s sure to make things a bit harder to find.
Think about it, how many people are going to be running both clients? Spyware aside (you can disable all the Kazaa junk with a few dll wipes & registry play), both the FastTrack & Gnutella networks will end up with less content, at least for a while. I'm sure only the very determined will bother running both clients, meaning things will be a touch harder to find.
If you look at it even now, FastTrack seems to have put up with a swamping of new users, but 1 out of 3 people aren't sharing (sitting behind a firewall? yea right..). I'm certain Morpheus isn't going to get a lot of it's defected client base back, mostly the net newbies I'd imagine, which will leave Morph' on Gnutella with it's only problems with file availability.
I don't know, it's hard to say anything for certain; let's see how the Gnutella network handles the extra load. As long as I can find my pr0^H^H^H educational videos somewhere, I'll be happy;)
Ok, so we set a MMORPG in the Star Wars universe. Sounds Good. What do you immediately think? "Wow, I can play a budding Jedi like Luke Skywalker!" or "I'm gonna be a cool bounty Hunter like Boba Fett".
