Geeky Child Names?

kerrys_1999 asks: "Good friends have just given birth to their first child, Ashton Tate Rogers, named after the heroes of dBase 3. I know Dr Bob, a Delphi fanatic, has children called Erik Mark Pascal and Natasha Louise Delphine. Finally there's the story that Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda after the legendary video games. Anybody know more?"

    My wife and I have "Kira" marked down as the name of a future daughter - it is short, it doesn't sound artificial, and it is far more unique then, say, Betty or Jackie. We're stumped for good names for boys, though.

    One of my all time favorite names, though I can't actually stand the guy, is "Wolf Blitzer". Now that is pretty cool.

      If you like names from Star Trek that don't sound weird, why not pick "Jackson Roykirk" for first and middle names. If you recall, that was NOMAD's creator, confused with Captain Kirk.

    How about Saxifrage? It can be abbreviated to 'Sax'.

    For those who don't know, its from the terraforming scientist in KSR's Red/Green/Blue mars series.

    I've seen the nick Saxifrage registered on some webboards (like space.com's discussion board), but he hasn't been posting lately.

    I just think the name is awesome.

      I just finished re-reading the first of the series the other day, actually. Cool name, and you cut down on the "endless asskicking factor" by, as you mentioned, having a build in nickname of Sax, which is just cool.

      Good series of books, if anyone hasn't checked them out.

      read the post - "named after the heroes of dBase 3", but it's a bit stranger than that...

      dBase was produced by the company Ashton-Tate. But there was never a Mr Ashton, ony a Mr Tate. But he reckoned that "Tate" didn't have enough gravitas, so he invented a partner, and called his company "Ashton-Tate". (Another version has it that he did have a partner, but the partner's name didn't sound corporate enough).

      Similarly - their first product was dBaseII. There never was a dBaseI. They thought that the "II" made it sound like a mature product in its second major release. Who ever buys version 1.0 of anything?

      :P I knew where the reference came from.

      I spent a large perportion of my childhood playing Iron Ox and LORE on two local BBS's. The first modem I used ran at 1200bps.

      My first two OS's were Minix, and DOS 3.2
      My first games were animal, and ttt, on Minix, and Space Quest on DOS.
      The computer this all ran on was a 12Mhz 286 with 2MB of RAM. (The next computer was a 486 DX2/66 with 8MB RAM. Next was a P3/500 with 128MB RAM. Now I have my own computer... Duron 1.2Ghz :-)

      I never actually used dBase, but knew the name Ashton was used in it because my father used dBase, and I had read the intro's of some books for it.

      BTW My father had nothing to do with my name. If he had his way I would have been named after one of many car model/brands. His first choice was Austin.
      My mother got my name from a character in a very religious novel.

      Although there was no dBaseI, there was a pre-cursor dbms product that ran on CP/M. "Predator" rings a bell, but is probably not the exact name.

      Niggers always name their kids the dumbest fucking names. I've run across a Tequilla, Exithere, Placenta, Rectum, and even a Shi'thead. I saw we pass a law allowing hospitals to shoot the parents that give their kids such stupid names. They obviously aren't going to take good care of them and will let a 5 yr old babysit for them while they go out to pick up a 40 or some crack.

      That was a fun set of books, worth reading again once you're out of grade school. I lost interest about halfway through Many Waters, but I guess that's just not my sort of story.

I'm the only one in the family that knows who Ada Lovelace was, so I had to explain to my wife why I was so fond of the short name, Ada.       Not really true anymore, atleast in Catholicism. I was baptized, and my names, first and middle, are not Saint's names. In elementary school, we had to do a project on the Saint associated with our name, so I ended up using Leo since it was fairly close to Lee.

    I have a dog (A Boston Terrier, photos on my website) named Darwin Charles Loukas, after Charles Darwin. My other dog is named Pepper Two Draper. I had a dog named Pepper when I was a kid. If the Atreides can always have a Duncan Idaho, then I will always have a Pepper.

    Future dogs not named Pepper will be named after other scientists. I have Maxwell Clerk Loukas (after James Clerk Maxwell) and Bruno Giordano Loukas (after Giordano Bruno) already reserved. When I need more names, I'll just draw from the large number of scientists with neat names.

    Da5id, Y.T., Hiro, Wintermute, Count Zero, Berry / Rydell, Colin / Laney, Chevette, etc. (Just finished re-reading Gibson's ATP) Basically anything from Gibson, Sterling, Stephenson, Rucker, Brunner, etc., etc. It can even be a normal name (maybe the same as an author instead of a character?) and still be geeky to you.
