"Clone Wars" Cartoon Shorts on Cartoon Network
snilloc writes "Starwars.com announces that Cartoon Network will carry "Star Wars: Clone Wars" cartoon shorts in order to bridge the gap between Episodes 2 and 3. I guess this means we won't be seeing the Clone Wars in Ep3, as many of us had hoped. On the bright side, we get our SW fix in twenty 2-3 minute shorts. We can only hope against hope that they won't suck."
As Cartoon Network: A new hope?
I have been waiting for the Clone wars since ep I came out. I kept tellin myself...well it must be in the next one. I should have known.
We can only hope against hope that they won't suck.
That's what I'm thinking... They never seem to get these kind of things quite right...
I am a viral sig. Please help me spread.
sounds like they didn't get enough of the story told in ep1 and ep2, with ep4 a known entity they were either going to have a really long and sprawling ep3 or miss a huge amount of what happened between ep2 and ep3 or ep3 and ep4....

Slashdot 's editors are dickheads
99% of people (or even Star Wars fans) are not going to watch the cartoon network to see 2-3 minute cartoons which are apparently necessary for Episode III to make sense. Yes, I'm sure that Lucas will stick all the cartoons on a $24 DVD for sale a week or so before Ep3 comes out, but that aside, this is simply idiotic. If he doesn't want to film the clone wars, or other necessary plot devices, that's fine (a shame, but fine) - just allude to them in the movie. Have a character talk about it and fill us in. But 2-3 minute cartoons on an obscure cable channel? What is Lucas smoking?
Stupid people make stupid things profitable.
That's not A New Hope!
I knew something like this was going to happen somewhere in the first three episodes...
It is hard to write prequels for movies that have such a long expansive storyline. I think Lucas thought he could do it all in just three prequels, but now he has realized that he has got in over his head and these clone wars cartoons are just him saving grace. I doubt it will work though. I just hope the transitions from film to cartoon and back to film are seamless.
Not a sermon, just a thought.

. . . . I really DO have a life.
It's only funny until someone gets hurt. Then, it's hilarious.
He figure's it millions of dollars cheaper to have the cartoons show the clone wars rather than to film it all. That way he can make ep3 for a lot less and continue to milk all the money from Star Wars geeks with his crappy movies.

...so this is what trolling feels like...
Given the quality of Episodes I and II, we may need to do a little more than hope against hope.

So I guess the moral of the story is that Episode 3, which I had hoped would be dark and actually good, with no shouts of "Yippee!" or "Yousa gonna...", will actually suck just like Episodes 1 and 2.
At least we have The Matrix 2 and 3 the look forward to.

You're holding your breath for a Lucasfilm "Star Wars" cartoon that doesn't suck? Let's see where there's precedent. You've got the short in the Holiday Special, which actually seems good (even though it isn't) next to the wretched filth of the rest of the special. Then you've got "Ewoks" and "Droids", both of which that despite being based on the immensely popular star wars world and characters, failed miserably due to general suckage.
Now, after "Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the clones", you expect these new shorts to be good? Sorry, the writing is on the wall, and that's not what it says. I'm not going to bother.
Keep holding your breath though... it saves oxygen.
The character designs look TERRIBLE. :(
:D
Apparently, they got the Samurai Jack / Dexter's Laboratory guy to do the shorts. Who the hell made that decision? His goofy style is totally inappropriate, imo. I'll watch them, but I'm not too optimistic.
If they had to pick someone totally out of left field, they should have gotten the Sealab 2021 guys to do it.
I'm thinking this will be put on a Extra Special Super Edition after the whole series has been released on DVD. Then there will be a remake of it and it will be put on the Second Extra Special Super Edition DVD.
I'm sure that, by now, the relationship between George Lucas and his fans is a standard case study in counseling handbooks, codependence manuals, psychotherapy training, etc.
Fans (to counselor): I love him, he's really wonderful deep down, I know he means well and is a decent man.
(Cut to videotape) Lucas: Take this, you stupid bitch! [Smack! Punch! Ewoks! Jar-Jar!]
Fans (Sobbing): It must be my fault --- I just can't seem to please him. I know he doesn't mean to hurt me like this....
It's awful, really.
I'd like to see the Millineum Toaster again.

I would hardly call Cartoon Network obscure. Everyone with basic cable has heard of them, and those of us with non-food-stamp cable get it without exception. . . I still can't believe that people are continued to be shocked and appalled by Lucas' next moves. He's gonna do what he wants with his legacy, and we're stuck with the choice of watching or ignoring. My PERSONAL philosophy is that it's pretty cool if you don't try to take it so very literally (and dissect it with an electron microscope). E.G. Go get Ep 1 and Ep2, smoke a HUGE fatty and tell me it wasn't cool... They have LIGHTSABERS! C'mon. . . (PS - I'm an adult, not a 12-yr-old fanboy)
Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
How much suckitude can George Lucas cram into a 2-3 short? There's only so much bad dialogue and plot loopholes you could cram into that amount of time...
blog |
This is hardly worth the time. First, it's listed in the 'expanded universe' section of the website. That means it's not canon; it doesn't count. Second, there isn't even going to be a proper cartoon of ~30 minute length. These are 2-3 minute shorts that will be shown as filler between shows. Finally, they only expect 20 of them. Less than one hour.
Why bother?
Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. -John Lennon
After George Lucas single handedly ruined episode 1 & 2 from poor directing and producing, not taking any advice from anyone as he was forced to do in 4,5 & 6 - I'm certainly not going to be lining up when 3 comes out. I'll go see it in order to say the line "and now his failure is complete". I recently caught episode 1 on tv, with the exception of roughly 10 scenes, every scene in the movie is poorly directed, the dialogue is horrible and does not pack the punch 4,5 & 6 half did.
I certainly do think that the Lucas franchise has exploited viewers beyond any other films in history. This even beats the 10 versions of Blade Runner and Jurassic Park merchandise. A cartoon series to bridge the gap between numbers 2 & 3 shows they are aiming for a new generation of fans.
I heard that he will be redoing 4,5 & 6 too, is this true?

Besides that one Yoda battle in EP2, exactly what part of the Star Wars universe hasn't sucked since TESB?
Why are you letting these clowns ruin our country?
I mean, WTF? There aren't any saucer-eyed girls in school uniforms. You call that animation?
There are no complicated plots, there are no serious new philosophies, and there definetly was never any adult content.
Star Wars is for Children. And Children love cartoons. And most children have two parents, even if they don't live together. Potentially, that is two incomes the kid has, so this is perfectly logical. Have you intelligent nerds not realized that everything is marketed towards children? Especially 10-13. Check for it.
Lucas and TPTB (Rick McCallum and others) have said in interviews that the final climactic battle of the clone wars takes place at the beginning of EP III. If they want to give us some insite as to what actually happens during the clone wars then so be it. It's not like any of this stuff was going to be on film anyway! Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to see it in full CG with the power of ILM behind it but that's not going to happen so get over it and accept that Lucas has chosen to do anything at all.
Lemme guess...the movie won a mere battle, but the war rages on! I despise hollywood's logic; anything to continue slugging kids' cereal boxes with wookies, jarjar, and pokemon...
Now Slashdot Wars...that'll be one hell of a cereal box! It would be rockin' if I get buy a box of "Quaker Oaties" and I would receive..."Quake4:william_pen's_alien_outhouse!" or open a box of "William Wonker's Nerdz" and receive a free 30-day add-less subscription to "Slashdot: News for Nerdz, stuff that matters a bit!"
That'll be the day...*cries*
But I'm sure you already Gnu that.
If he would have focused less on the half ass love story, just alluded to it, and spent less time on tracking down the bounty hunter.
It is such a huge expanse of time with a lot of stuff that we already know had to have happened. The question is, what do we want to see, what is important to actually experience, more than just knowing something happened?
I feel he could have elluded to the love affair in the beginning of this movie, and moved closer, if not right into the fall of Anakin right at the end. The over all fact that he was in love in the princess and cast away his Jedi Knighthood for her isn't what I would call an necesary part of the story, especially with as much time that was spent on such a bad example of a love story. I wasn't drawn into the love story, and every scene was painful to watch, a waste of movie footage (bytes, as it were) if you ask me.
Yes, to put something as important as necessary plot information to the Star Wars franchise (not just to the next movie) on anything but primetime, network television (after "Friends" or something) is per se obscure. I would argue that even putting it on NBC right after "Friends" is still not good enough.
We have another choice aside from "watching" or "ignoring." We can complain and make our voices heard. I hope you don't feel the same way about copyright issues (e.g. cave in to the RIAA/MPAA or just ignore them).
Stupid people make stupid things profitable.
A huge amount of profits from the original trilogy came from product tie-ins, action figures, toys and clothing. Other than a few light-sabers, the newest series hasn't generated the same merchandising. I remember even in the first giddy rush of optimism for ep. 1, finding star wars stuff on the clearance rack.
These cartoons are intended to turn that around, and catch the attention of kids, who frankly think of star wars as their parent's creepy idea of fun, and could care less. Once that fails (miserably), I suspect they will miraculously decide to "restore" the clone wars to Ep. 3, due to overwhelming fan demands, to which I respond... whatever!!!!
At this point, I'd rather see a good Stargate (best movie to show adaptation ever!) or Bladerunner sequel, and finally put Star Wars and Star Trek, out of my misery.

All episode 3 can do is salvage what is left of the Star Wars name.

After all, the only parts I liked in Ep:1 and ep:2 were roughly 2-3 minutes long. The opening chase in ep:2, yoda knife fight, all about 2-3 minutes long. The rest of the movie could have been cut all together. As a matter of fact, I nominate there not be a EP3: at all, that lucas just show a quick montage of lightsabers turning on, women with odd haircuts, and planets/planetoid bodies exploding. Maybe set it to techno music, rather than the john williams score. 10 minutes long, in total, no muss, no fuss, just give me my noisy splosions in space.
I'm so tired of the train wreck of the star wars universe, I'm not even going to bother to preview this post before clicking submit.

If Lucas didn't do this Episode III would be about 6 hours long. It's a cheesy idea, but at least George is trying to fill in the gaps. I just hope I don't end up fighting over the remote with my 5 year-old. She loves SpongeBob on Nickelodeon, but who doesn't?

Just like with Star Trek, another franchise that was exploited right down the toilet, Star Wars has performed poorer and poorer with each outing.
:)
Mark my words, when the franchises are really on the ropes, and no movies have been made for a few years, someone in Hollywood will propose "A combined Star Trek vs. Star Wars battle where Princess Leia has to fight against Jean Luc Picard" which thankfully will go nowhere. (Or worse yet: "Princess Leia falls in love with Jean Luc Picard...")
Don't believe me? Remember "Alien vs. Predator" or "Superman vs. Batman"? Both projects that came at the ends of the franchises.
Now that Hollywood has come out with just a few too many comic book movies (the Hulk, coming soon, with Archie and Veronica even being proposed) the whole comic trend will eventually collapse and like all good Hollywood things, will have been exploited to death.
Cases in point: the meteor movie trend, that's cratered, the "virus" movie trend (Outbreak et al) has died, the space adventure (Star Wars, Star Trek) lasted longer than most, but appears to be having the air sucked out of it's lungs, and now the comic book movie trend is crumpling.
The nice thing about Hollywood is that it is very predictable... almost as predictable as the mass market viewers.
What's the next movie bandwagon? I predict five years of dog movies.

I would rather see Episode 3 be a good movie than have it connect every plot thread between 2 and 4. I'm not sure whether Lucas agrees with me here, though.
The cartoons could help free up time to make a good movie, yet still (somewhat) satisfy fans who demand Clone War action. Really, though, it's probably just marketing to scoop up kids in preparation for a movie that will squander the extra time it gains anyway. Sigh.
Maybe the should just call it Episode III: The Return of Jar-Jar and be done with it.
It would be ironic if these cartoons turned out to have better charater and story development than the EPs 1-3. I've thought for a long time that Lucas' directing is part of the problem, and now we will see what these characters can do in somebody else's hands.
here is what i don't understand.. assuming Ep. 3 is going to be the movie standard 2 hours in length.. and these 20 short clips add up to almost an hour.. why not just lengthen Episode 3 to three hours ? you kill two birds with one stone.
with all the recent 3 hour movies, you won't hear too many complaints about the length (unless the movie will suck)

NeoCode writes "There were rumours and speculations first. Now it looks like its a done deal. Harry Knowles, of AintItCool.com has reports on an animated version of Star Wars set after AOTC but before episode 3. This series is produced by Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack). The cartoons will be a series of short films. Could this infuse Star Wars with a new life or is this just another merchandising plot? Nevertheless, this could be quite interesting." Yeah look what good Ewoks & Droids did for the SW universe
this means I'll be seeing more action figures at my local toy shops. Me and my bro both collect, but lately I'm seeing nothing new except from scalpers (who I won't buy from. It's ridiculous to pay more for a new figure than for a 25 year old vintage figure). Am I the only one not seeing any of the newer toys?
The art style has me worried though, can't say I like it. Oh well.
Hi! I make Firefox Plug-ins. Check 'em out @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mp3-podcaster/
Alright. So, alot of us are in agreeance that Episodes I and II sucked ass. While the original Trilogy is still considered among the greatest in history, the last two movies have put a sour taste on the Star Wars sweetness.
With Genndy Tartakovsky at the helm of the animated project, I really can't see this as being all too bad. While Genndy and his team probably won't have much of a say story wise (which is where this might fail), we can bet that the animation will be slick and stylish. Genndy is a damned genius, and that was proven when Samurai Jack hit the scene.
So here I am, with cautious optimism that the top animator in America can salvage a franchise that's quickly swirling down the toilet bowl. If anyone can do it, it's Genndy Tartakovsky. Here's hoping that something good can come out of the modern Star Wars paradox...

The thing that amazed me most about Ep2 was the 'deleted scenes' on the DVD edition. I'm used to deleted scenes from movies like Alien where you can look at them and say 'yup, very dull, good thing that was cut' (with one exception in Alien). In Ep 2 there were two entire deleted plotlines that had been removed becuase Lucas thought that they 'slowed the action down'. Right, like the only reason to watch a film is the fight scenes. Audiences obviously don't want to see character development.
Exactly the same thing happened with The Two Towers - all the plot was removed and replaced with long, and very dull, battle scenes. 'Oh look. He's cut another orc's head off. This is riveting...'

Who would win?
I think that, in fairness, the direction in "A New Hope" was pretty good, even great maybe.
The entrances of Darth Vader were well done with the music and the shot of his feet were especially memorable. The fight near Leia's jail and the followup scene in the Garbage Compactor was pretty classic. Luke finding his family killed was well done. The scene with the Rebel Alliance viewing the Holograph of the Death Star plans was good. Several memorable scenes of Hans Solo piloting the Millenium Falcon were good. The attack on the Death Star was well paced, much better than the similar scene from Independence Day.
It wasn't just the writing in that movie. I know a lot of the scenes were actually nods to other cinematography (the scene of Luke finding his family killed was almost directly lifted from some Western, for example and shooting the feet of a villian entering the scene in is an old trick to build suspense), but all in all, a good job of Direction.
Hmmm... Going back to read what you wrote, you may have a point. The direction of the actors in "A New Hope" wasn't especially good. It was mostly the camera work, pacing, music and atmospherics. OTOH, the Hans/Leia/Luke thing was well developed and those actors did a good job. Peter Cushing was good. James Earl Jones was an inspired choice. I'd say the casting was excellent, but that's not directing.
E.G. Go get Ep 1 and Ep2, smoke a HUGE fatty and tell me it wasn't cool... They have LIGHTSABERS! C'mon. . .
You are correct. It is cool on the same level as Britney Spears music and the Johnny Mnemonic movie. To prove my point, imagine Ep2 starring Keanu Reeves and Britney. It would not be worse. It might even be better.
That amount of cool doesn't really beat smoking a huge fatty and masturbating. If it's not cooler than smoking a huge fatty and masturbating, I'm not spending my money on it.
There are no trails. There are no trees out here.
Will I be able to check listings for this? Because if not, I may miss one/all of them.
Besides, if Lucas says that Episode III won't make sense without knowing the events from these "cartoons," I think he's assuming that we're dumb as rocks, like he seems to anyway. Listen to the commentary parts by him on any of the recent movies. He has literally no respect for the audience's intelligence.

I saw that Attack of the Clones on Telly & I couldn't believe how bad the script, plotting & directing was. I was watching it on a DVD with some mates at my brother's place meaning I couldn't just flick it over to something else, mind you everyone else there was shocked by how bad it was too. We couldn't stop laughing at the cliches & the wooden directing.
Gez WTF does such a crapy movies series designed for children, or adults with a mental age of 10, have its own catagory on Slashdot. Mind you much of what Hollywood puts out is for adults with a mental age of 12, but that Star Wars flick was about the worst in that regard.

I agree that the anime tie-in works for the Matrix. However, anime is targeted towards a more mature audience than the style of cartoon being presented by Lucas, here. Major break of protocol for Star Wars. They're making a big mistake by kiddifying it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt Two Towers could have been more than jsut endless battles...then again, the book is similar. I can remember rushing to get to the third book...then you find out the suspense ends halfway through the third book and you wish you would not have rushed so quickly. I think mebbe EP3 might have some surprise we are not expecting...you can only wish. But then what would be the point in throwing a whole twist in without doing 7th or 8th movie.
I need a TiVo for my car. Pause live traffic now.
Nonetheless, Star Wars looks best presented on the big screen, filmed by a camera. I think it's going to lose some of its impact as a cartoon. Outrageous stuff happens in cartoons every day, so without its name, this one is just another face in the crowd.

He's the brains behind this operation. Everybody has seen his amazing work on Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, and apparently he got the job partially because George Lucas is a huge fan of Samurai Jack. I have no fear that if anybody can do this project justice, it's him.

Did no one notice that these shorts are being created by the guy that did Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack? I don't know about most people, but imo, those cartoons seriously kick ass. Samurai Jack's one of the most visually interesting cartoons I've ever had the pleasure of seeing (anime excluded, haven't seen much of that).

I dont know how many people read the books for Episodes 3-5, but I did. There was actually not that much he had to put in there. In order (from memory...) was this-
1. Aniken becomes Obi Wan's student
2. Aniken becomes uber-powerful, is wooed by Senator Palpitine
3. Aniken give birth to the twins, Luke and Leia. Their mother, who has started to fear Aniken, goes into hiding, and leaves Luke with his uncle.
4. Obi-Wan and Aniken have a falling out (possibly over the twins, but they dont say), then a fight which Aniken loses. He falls in lava, becoming critically wounded (and presumed dead by Obi Wan); only his strength in the force keeps him alive. Palpitine finds him, gets him cyborged up.
5. The Clone Wars- the Jedi are fighting clones, and Palpatine uses this distraction to kill off all the Jedi (except himself and Vader), and then take over the Republic.
6. Birth of the Rebelion.
And thats pretty much it! If he had paced it out, and actually done some planning, it would have been pretty good. But making it in this crappy ad-hoc way is what is making it so bad. Oh well, its obvious that Speilberg was the genius in that duo.

Episode I was a train wreck -- I watched it, was appalled (sp?), only watched it again in fast-forward (fight scenes) once my friend bought the DVD. Went to see Episode II cuz my friend got free tickets, fell asleep......... and I should be looking forward to Episode III why?
"Lord of the Rings" and "The Matrix" hold more far potential than the modern crop of "Star Wars" films, hands down. The only people who will argue otherwise are the fan(atics)........ special effects should always be used as a tool to complement a solid storyline and quality acting, not in lieu of. I think Lucas really has lost sight of these basic tenets, and like most marketing drek, is only concerned with squeezing the most cash out of his franchise in the short term.
In another 20 years, nobody will care about Star Wars -- its time has come and gone. Move along, people, nothing to see here.
Remember Ewoks and the Droids? Fucking pathetic. I can't believe they're even further fucking up the franchise like this.
