  1. Locations on "War On Terror" Board Game Confiscated In UK · · Score: 2, Insightful

It seems as soon as there's a topic regarding law enforcement on Slashdot, everyone comes out of the woodwork with some story about corruption throughout the ranks. But keep in mind not everyone is from the same country, and it'd be nice if you could at least specify where you're coming from before you start some story. I'm from Toronto, but have traveled around Canada and seen local authorities vary drastically in how they use their powers. Now if things can vary that much across just a few provinces, surely things vary much greater for different countries, and it'd be important to distinguish what law enforcement agency you're talking about.

Also, for a community that's usually opposed to mainstream media, no one has really taken into consideration the media's bias to negative acts. Stories about corrupt officers sell more than stories about officers doing their job properly, or even going beyond the call of duty, so news agencies tend to focus on that. There are plenty of good cops out there; they just don't get their fair share of the headlines.

While this may be oppressive, at least users now know where they stand. This has to be better than an invisible, 'if we think you're using too much we may slow you down, and then lie about it repeatedly' policy.

Similarly, it's better that they're reminding customers of this and giving them a heads up. If it's in their contract, couldn't AT&T automatically pull the plug on their service and say later "You breached the contract...you *did* read the contract, didn't you?"?

  7. Where did this come from? on Cuil Proves the Bubble Is Back · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have never heard of Cuil until this article. I'm a little impressed with the depth of their search, as I did a quick test of searching for old screen names and found some old stuff, and some unexpected stuff (like being mentioned outside of the site I registered for).

However, their results display screen sucks ass. Their 4x3 grid is annoying, especially given the size of each result. Clicking on Preferences completely failed to correct this. I was hoping for "Grid view" vs "List view", but I guess a list view would be too much like Google and completely unacceptable.

Until it fixes this, and adds a conversion calculator, I see no reason to switch to the new kids on the block.

Their hair, their clothes, their shoes, the weather and how it affects their hair/clothes/shoes, the cute little doggy they saw at the park, and so on and so forth. And now people want to promote technology that will only encourage that?! My god, forget the children, won't any one think of the men?

I'm terrified of the day my girlfriend finds out about the VR program on her cell phone. She seems happy enough about speed-dial, but one day I'll be doomed to have her call and blather on about "Hey, you'll never believe this. You know how I thought speed-dial was the greatest thing ever? Well, I just realized I could call you without even pushing buttons! Now I don't have to worry about my nails...".

I disagree. I see nothing idiotic about those statements.

Provided the company isn't doing anything illegal, they very can well do anything they want. If you disagree with what they do, then stop doing business with them. If enough people stop doing business with them, they'll realize their mistakes and hopefully fix things.
