I have had dealings with more than a few of this species. Personally I would avoid them like the plague. Most of the time they are grossly unqualified to assess as to whether you are a good candidate with the appropriate skill set. The few that I have had some results with (limited however) were people I insisted that we meet face to face, so both parties know who they are dealing with. I tend to see a recruiter as just another gate keeper, and more likely than not, not a very good one
Overkill is nothing new to these whackos. Remember when a few years ago, the Iranian govt offered a reward to anyone who killed Salma Rushdie for a book that he had written and offended their religious sensitivies. And these are the same people who are filming videos of hostages getting their throats cut.
I agree with you completely. I am in the process of bringing myself up to speed as a SOX consultant, and Section 404 which deals with internal controls leaves it up to the company in question to implement IT control processes to safeguard financial data stored on the servers. Such control processes include but are not limited to patch management, password management, server identification by platform, etc. The act does not highlight these processes specifically but insists in control processes which are relevant to any organization in the normal course of their business process. I fail to see how Linux usage would violate SOX requirements. www.sarbanes-oxley-101.com has more information on the subject.
Been there, done that. Just make a list (on a spreadsheet) of what you might need for the coming budgetary period.. Divide it up into relevant sections such as Hardware, software, support, etc..make sure you have relevant documentation as to why you need all this stuff. Come up with a proposal to the "powers of be"....
I've been there. My approach was to be as polite but direct as possible. You extended him the professional courtesy of a letter of resignation and a period of notice. If he can't repond in a professional manner, I would a) walk out and b) send him a lawyer's letter if he decides to withhold wages earned by yourself.
Maybe the person who wrote the article hasn't heard how much money the "real" players in the industry, IBM, Novell, etc have sunk into using Linux. And wasn't it here on/. that you guys keep commenting on the way Sun is falling behind on their share of the market?
Well just so you know, I'm chugging along on my two PC network.
1) A Amd k6-2 -300 box, 292 megs ram with a 3 gig drive, running Mandrake 9.1, Samba for file and printer sharing, and ip_masq for my other computer to get onto the net.
2) a Win98SE - AMD K62 - 500 box, 192 megs ram, 15 gig drive, for my business stuff (resumes and proposals in Word) and for my wife and daughter's work and Internet stuff
Works for us... too poor to afford more... My two bits
Well I guess we should take it for where it's coming from -- Microsoft. They seem to be aiming such comments at their target audience - a bunch of idiots. Just like the lot in their Microsoft Office tv commercials. Pretty sad for the world's largest technology company
Unfortunately, such (totally unrealistic) job requirements are frequently the norm, up here in Canada. I haven't quite been able to figure out if the people who post such requirements are actually looking for staff, or are just trying to impress their bosses. The job market for up here is pretty tough, and then we have to put up with crap such as the post. Shows a total lack of experience and/or professionalism in the people who somehow are supposed to be "recruiting" in Canada.
Excellent suggestion. One of the issues related to computer usage which seems to have been largely ignored is that it is THEIR responsibility to take precautions, install anti-virus software , patch their systems (MS users mostly) on a regular basis, educate themselves as to the implications as to ignoring these important issues. As most people are connected to the net these days, some idiot on an unpatched box may become compromised by a worm and affect a fair portion of net usage right across the Internet. It seems that users in general are brianwashed by the media (Del Interns commercials, etc) that all they have to do is switch on the damn box and everything will be just hunkey dorey.
Well that is NOT reality these days so get with it
"At this point, the future of the Undernet and IRC remains uncertain."
Huh ? I've been on Undernet for the last year and its been the most stable IRC network I've ever been on (veteran of Efnet in the early 90's and Dalnet in the late 90's), so comments like this are basically scare-mongering IMHO
We Canadians live in an environment of totally crappy government on all levels, an unaware and basically ignorant populace on all levels of local and global political awareness. With all the crap that this country is going through, a percentage of our voting public are going to subscribe to some mythical "religion" from a movie ? No wonder things don't work here. No wonder the rest of the world can't take us seriously.
Like you I am a TDCanadatrust customer. I had that problem a while back, but it was not just limited to Opera, was having the same prob with Netscape. I spoke to the tech support people at the TD who treated me like I was from Mars or something. Anyway a few months ago, one of the guys here gave me a few pointers, I had to redo my X-Window setup. Opera and Netscape now work fine depsite thos erroneous messages regarding cookies not being enabled on Opera. I am running Opera 6.0.3 because for some weird reason, all the newer versions crash on my Slackware 7.1 box.
Good luck with Opera, and I think I'll take a look at Phoenix
Because they are doing something vital, buddy. They have the skills and knowledge to keep the flow of business information going within the organization, help out clueless staff, and generally trouble shoot as situations arise. A vital job, in my humble opinion.
And its so easy to post as an Anonymous Coward, isn't it ?
hmmn, just raising a point here. My bank (Cdn Bank) TDCanadatrust supports the latest browsers Netscape and Explorer 6 but only from a Windows computer. Mybe they support Opera but NOT from a linux box. I asked about this and NO one on the tech support was prepared to comment. Consequently I have to do my net banking from a winbox on my network. Which sucks, but that's Canada for you, 100 years behind the times
Personally I would take the offer. It's good to know that your current employer had the sense to know talent and how to hold onto it ( most employers don't these days). As the saying goes "It's easier dealing with the devil that you know than the devil that you don't know".
My advice would be to start with the Slashdot archives of a few months ago where there was an article about the City of Largo (in Florida) who did just that, tossed out their M$ stuff and migrated to Linux in all their offices. If I remember correctly, they went Linux all the way, servers, desktops, etc.
Good idea ! Cat |grep are great commands to start off with and can be used to do a lot of things, look for files, search for text within files, etc. Also show them the vi editor, make sure that they know that they are going to have to learn to use vi. As my Unix prof used to say "Wherever you go with Unix/Linux, there will ALWAYS be vi"
I agree with you here. The head honcho from the Lindows group has come out on the record and said that Lindows right now is in beta (as opposed to a full release) and source will be released as the product is released as a final version. I would give him the chance to live up to his word, before we start throwing things at him. As noted in the article, his company has contributed code to the Open Source community, so there is every reason to believe that he will live up to his word with the Lindows product
Oh well, more FUD from the Microsoft bunch. I guess considering the crappy performance of their servers in the marketplace, they now have to bad mouth the competition. Maybe if they focussed on improving their products, instead of resorting to slander, they would be perceived as the world class company that they aspire to be.
Wow ! All these anonymous postings sounding like trolls. I installed OPenSSH3.1p1, in less time than it took to read all the posts in this thread. My point is, an exploit was discovered, a solution was offered, we move on from there. It's the OpenSource way, got it ?
