The problem is, there isn't a player/format that can be a) site skinned, b) load as fast, or c) stream as quickly as flash/flv. Embedding any video other than through flash is a nightmare for the end user, and can't be easily integrated into the site.
The world does need a free alternative to flash, but proprietary or not it's by LEAGUES the best solution for web video.
Qh, yeah, if you actually read the articles, then you find out what the story is actually about! Craziness. I'm used to just reading the headlines and then convincing myself I fully understand the situation and pontificating about it and why the author of the story I didn't read is wrong! That's what I learned here on/. anyway.
There's a difference between a headline saying something like, for example, "So And So Under Attack!" when could mean so and so is under media attack or was the victim of an attempted assination, but if you make the title "So And So Completely Not Shot!" when the article says he was is sort of different.
Well, it's not in question that Prey -supports- the same kind of portal stuff as Portal, the same way that the DooM 3 engine -supports- physics simulation, but it's hl2 that really made it the focus of the game and a major gameplay element through the use of the gravity gun and physics puzzles.
Doom 3 physics:half life 2 physics::Prey portals:Portal portals
The thing people need to realise is that: - In Prey, portals are a new thing that level can do to the player - In Narbtacular Drop and Portal, portals are a new thing that the player can do to the level.
Virtual Console is Nintendo's name for the service that will allow them to provide roms of classic games to Wii customers. Along with NES, SNES, and N64 games there will also be Turbografix 16 titles available on the service.
That doesn't make any sense though. By all accounts, they only actually did -one- thing, and it's being attributed to both "negligence" and "intentional infliction of emotional distress"
Anyone remember Giants: Citizen Kabuto? The Sea Reapers were female merwomen and in the overseas version they were topless. In the american version there was an added texture which censored it- but you just have to delete this file and suddenly there's nipples.
someone syas "X causes suicides!" and then someone else says "No! Y Causes suicides!"
The fact is there's a large number of reasons that someone may commit suicide. Japan just happens to have a lot of them (pressure, pop density, honour, etc.)
Lets assume for the sake of argument that AllPeers will release with the ability to convert all web pages to a full 3D virtual reality experience beamed right into your brain. Also, while beamed to your brain it will re-wire your body to be immune to all diseases. If this is true it is quite possible that AllPeers could pull billions away from IE and may in fact bring about world peace.
The thing is, they do what -doesn't- make them money and nobody wants to see. And then they try it again when it fails. And try it again slightly different.
There aren't actually 'scenes' in World of Warcraft, it's an mmorpg. The only thing I can think of is the window to Molten Core (which you dont have to use any more) but then this person would have to be functional enough to be in a level 60 raid guild
That is, ('freeway' == 'long commute') && ('stop and go' != 'freeway')
'freeway' == 'long commute' != 'stop and go' would be true when 'freeway' is true, 'long commute' isn't, and 'stop and go' is since then 'freeway' == 'long commute' would be false, and then false != 'stop and go' would be true.
This isn't a movie tie-in whatsoever. THere WAS a tie-in for Incredible Hulk when the movie came out, this one is more a comic book tie in (like Ultimate Spider Man)
I was collecting donations (mostly in american money) to send to the Red Cross.
On the 1st of September, I donated some of my own money, and it worked. I could select Nova Scotia, Canada as my address.
However, sometime this week the Red Cross changed their site, and now the form doesn't support Canada. Sure, you can select "Canada", but the State list only lists all of US's states and colonies and has two "Intl:" selections- one for Far East and one for Europe. It says if you're Itnl to use Europe (why didn't thye just make it "Rest Of The World?), but there's still no place to put Nova Scotia, and I need that for my credit card info.
I had to go through redcross.ca which required calculating how much money it actually is and invariably getting it wrong.
I'm trying to help here, but like about half the american web they seem to think the world is the united states+other continents, forgetting the existance of two other countries in the same continent as them.
Myst was the highest selling game before the Sims. Would you consider Maxis to be a 'tiny footnote?' before The Sims came out? Because Maxis was -less important- than Cyan was.
The Myst-clone (first person FMV point and click) basically wasn't important before Myst, and for years after Myst was like a third of all games being released. Even PC gamer based their games disc interface on the style for a while.
I'm not saying it's the most long running, but it's a studio that's been around for 10 years. A lot of 'big' importnat game companies are younger than Cyan.
to say it's a 'tiny footnote' just sounds like cyan-hating more than anything thought through well.
Cyan was sort of a special case. They couldn't do Uru by themselves, and then that ended up flopping so badly at the last minute that they got into debt with Ubisoft.
Really, they were pretty lucky Ubi let them live after Uru Live. EA probably wouldn't have.
You can postulate on alternate non-Myst timelines until the cows come home, but to point at it as the point that Adventure Gaming died is a little unfair. It seems to me that there were more market factors at work than just one phenomenally successful game. Yes, there were a lot of myst knock offs, but it was a rocky time for multimedia gaming thanks to Windows starting to appear as a gaming platform despite being not very well suited for the task.
Also, 1996 was the year both Mario 64 and - ushering in a new era in mainstream polygonal gaming.
As a planet it was nothing special, barely in the definition, but now it's a prototype of a new class of objects; Dwarf Planets.
For once Pluto is now more important than Uranus or Neptune.

Actually you need to do YYYYMMDD for it to sort alphanumerically (as you said, ddmmyyyy is in reverse order of magnitude whereas numbers are not)
DDMMYYYY would sort by tens of days first, then single days, then tens of months, etc, so it'd go like:
01122006
02061999
03112007
Etc.

Nice, now we can have a near infinate Energy Source and a convenient way to Move Crates around.

The suit, which claims Google acted negligently and intentionally inflicted emotional distress on the public
So, there's someone at Google saying "Muahahha, by my non action, child porn will soon flood the world! MUAHAHA!"
Seriously, is it even remotely possible that this is intentional negligence?
Arguments like this just bother me.

Are industry analysts ever right except due to the statistically low chance that they'd be always wrong?

This is a slashdot post
about an article
that someone on another site posted
a quote from someone at Cyan
Can we get another few degrees of separation next time? I like to be as far away from my news as possible.
Andromeda at 22? Someone actually expects us to beleive Andromeda is better than Earth Final Conflict, Buffy, Angel, or Futurama?
