1. You wont likely be able to run down to your nearest Apple store, pick up a copy of OS X and slap it on your newly pieced together box from newegg.com. Reason being, I suspect by the time Apple is actually bundling OS X with intel based hardware, it'll be based on an Intel chip with trusted computering and hardware DRM that prevents you from doing this.
but...
Will it be cracked in a matter of days? I'd be fairly certain of it.
2. You will now be able to get a new Powerbook with a faster processor! I would imagine the mobile limitation of the G5 weighed a good deal in favor of this decision. So, now ya know all those Apple tablet rumors were probably regarding a tablet running a Centrino or M proc:)
3. If you're sad that you wont be seeing dual or multi-core PPCs now, dont worry, you can just get a dual core Intel proc...shipping now:) Or wait till someone hacks the shit out of an XBOX 360 and then you'll have your dual core PPC.
4. As long as Apple will be slapping Intel procs in their boxes, Apple will never have to play catch-up to Windows kids. Their boxes will have the same guts. This will also give cause for Apple to keep their prices competative or increase their release schedules, 'cause every time a new Intel proc hits the market, which is more frequent than PPCs, Apple's going to have to adjust their three PowerPC configs, nullifying whatever it was they just sold...unless of course the price is right:)
5. This is all so funny to me. The timing. Microsoft makes an OS that competes (well, maybe not) with OS X. Microsoft makes a console based on Intel hardware. Apple makes an OS that competes with Microsoft, makes computers based on IBM hardware. Microsoft makes a console based on IBM hardware that Apple based their computers on. Apple now builds their OS for the hardware Microsoft used to use in their console. I know it means nothing, just seems funny.
Imagine that, overpriced computers wich often resemble a piece of art and only garner 3% of the home computer market, appeal to folks who are smarter and speak better english. It's just so unbelievable.
This probably has something to do with l33t not being a part of the king's english.
but does it come with the SMS's original on-board Snail Maze game? Cause, w/o that, what's the point...I mean, that's all anyone really needs in life right?
Actually, creating the character of Jar-Jar was mildly brilliant on the part of Lucas. Put a character in the series who's so annoying that people will spend so much time focused on bashing it, they'll be distracted from how CRAPPY the rest of the movie and characters are.
Two films deep, Jar-Jar is the least of Lucas' problems.
Talk about innovative design on behalf of Nintendo....NOT!
I used to own this hardware...17 years ago...sure it only played Donkey Kong, but there's no denying that the layout/design is identical to the old Nintendo Game & Watch:
I wish this article had opened the door to more of what Japanese market does enjoy. Especially regarding their arcade games. Their taste for simulation games is truly unique to their culture...and I doubt it has anything to do with not liking FPS and violence.
Well, I already own a PC and a Tivo...so instead of forking out nearly $1,400 for their low end box, I think I'll just prepay NINE YEARS of Tivo service...ya know, if the HD holds out that long:)
Yes, I agree. It used to be when you rear-ended someone you flew through the windshield and died. Now you hit a balloon and break your nose. Damn technology!
I agree! The graphics for FFVII, X, X-2, and XII are mostly crap. It's their awesome stories that people buy em for. Those games may as well have been put out on the SNES. Personally, I'm working on porting them to MUSH. It's gonna rock!
This would pretty much change horror/thriller/action movies forever as running to a car for an escape would no longer be an option due to the 30 second wait.
Seriously though, sometimes you need to start your car and GO! This would pretty much screw you in such a situation. Would probably also lead to higher auto theft due to people leaving their cars running while swinging in to the bank or 7-11.
See, a CCD is kinda like film in a non-digital camera or camcorder. The larger the CCD is, the more light it receives. That's part of why people use large format film...you can expose it for shorter periods of time and use less sensative film so that your pictures are sharper.
By default, a 3ccd camera should be technically three times more sensative to light than a single CCD camera. Now, it doesn't work out exactly that way, but it does still mean that a 3ccd camera is more receptive to light than a single chip camera is.
Oh yeah, and night shot will only guarantee that your image looks like crap. But, ya know, if you wanna use night-shot to shoot your films, knock yourself out!
Here, do some research: http://www.ferrario.com/ruether/camcord er-comparis on.htm
www.dvspot.com (does a low/night shot comparisons for every camera he reviews)
Sure the Sony "Night Shot" is fantastic compared to other companies...but even then, your stuff comes out looking like the Paris Hilton video...just without Paris Hilton.
Consider the Panasonic PV-GS70. It's the cheapest 3ccd camera you're going to buy new...MSRP of $999. 3ccd's will help in low light and give a greater picture quality. Unfortunately, compared to Sony, Canon, and other Panasonic offerings, the GS70 uses a smaller CCD, so low light performance isn't THAT great. Still, the picture is excellent.
You're going to be best off spending the most possible, especially if you want the camera to last a long time. I would also consider a Canon GL1 or GL2, a Sony TRV900 or TRV950, or a Sony VX1000, VX2000 or VX2100. All of those cameras are more expensive, but considered industry standards as far as lower end 3ccd prosumer cameras. Also, they're excellent in low light.
Also, I would consider buying used. You'll be able to pick up a Canon GL1, a Sony VX1000, or a TRV900 a lot closer to your $1000 price point.
Also, a few general rules: If you wont use it for stills, don't be swayed by high still picture resolutions. Stick with MiniDV as opposed to DVD recording camcorders or other formats (Sony offers several), and go to a store and check the camera out yourself. Sometimes the "feel" of a camcorder will simply put you off regardless of how great it is.
Check here for reviews and what not: www.camcorderinfo.com www.dvspot.com
Also, google for whichever camera and clips. I've found several comparisons with actual clips from all of the above mentioned cameras.
Who cares? I've owned these DVDs for years...in fact, I have the original trilogy and SE trilogy with a total of 37 different covers!!! All with Chinese, Malay, and Thai subtitles too! Beat that Lucas...you fool!!!
Apples current G5 rocks something like 7-9 fans depending on your config. For some reason, I just don't see a console with 18 to 27 fans in Microsoft's future. Certainly, I do believe XBOX Next will be based on an IBM PPC, but I'd imagine something a little more power and cooling efficient.
As for the hard drive; it will definitelyi be there or at the least, be bundled with the Live pack. The HD is absolutely necessary for Xbox Live, which as far as console online gaming goes, has been very successfull.
Oh come on now! You can't go posting logically thought out posts on Slashdot that don't rip on Microsoft! Don't you know where you are man? In fact, your entire post didn't even mention Microsoft (or any variation there of). The hell is wrong with you boy?
Yes, it stucks that companies are constantly outsourcing jobs. Not only because it takes jobs away from people living in the states, but it also generally turns out to be a shitty experience. Offshore tech support blows, offshore engineering is tough, especially when it's not 100% offshore. Still, there's no reason that companies shouldn't be allowed to do it.
SO...
What do we as Americans living in the US do? Eventually so many jobs and entire industries will be moved offshore, that there will be few jobs for us to do. Even as new jobs and industries are created, they too will eventually move offshore. Does this mean we should all strive to be executive staff? Is there a way that Americans will be able to continue working? Even working for minimum wage wont cut it...because we'd soon no longer be able to consume the products we're building in the first place. Is there a solution that will allow Americans to continue to work, continue to consume, and continue to live our ways of life?
Ok, a few things here...
:)

Ahhh...the origin of a future Macintosh zealot!
WTF would this guy do with 9 fans?

Nintendo Game & Watch on Ebay
Buying new hardware from Apple after installing OS X made your iMac mind numbingly slower than OS 9 - $3,000
Updating your Mac with four versions of the same OS in order to acheive the same performance you had five years ago- $516
Not running Windows - Priceless
I wish this article had opened the door to more of what Japanese market does enjoy. Especially regarding their arcade games. Their taste for simulation games is truly unique to their culture...and I doubt it has anything to do with not liking FPS and violence.
shit, this thing had been my own little secret for two years and now it's /.'d.
Of course, it's nice to see some reassuring coverage about this site...the first time I was a bit sketchy about putting 144.303 Rubles on my Visa.
At $699 for 400Mhz, it'd actually be cheaper and faster than 80% of all mac's currently in peoples homes.
Well, I already own a PC and a Tivo...so instead of forking out nearly $1,400 for their low end box, I think I'll just prepay NINE YEARS of Tivo service...ya know, if the HD holds out that long :)

Yeah, between trying to get first post and +5 moderation on Slashdot, my ass has had to seek professional therapy!
Too bad my corporate health insurance doesn't cover Slashdot syndrome...or my shrink Jack Daniels (fortunately he's only $20/per evening).

Well, there goes my theory on the extinction of the sasquatch! Damn!
