Can someone who knows more about this process comment how this could possibly be? It smells so much like somebody is feeding us fake information. First off, if this has been a problem since the 1950s, why is it suddenly news that makes it sound like nobody knew of any problems till yesterday? Or is it more like every year we find some bad cells and we need to go back and redo those experiments... and someone decided to add up all problems for the last 100 years and make a write up about it?
I love this idea... have done similar things on a much much smaller scale. The question I pose to Slashdot is this... how the hell do I get this one annoying software company ad off my Slashdot phone profile? I is there every day in some form or fashion for a year. As much as I block ads on my PC, I haven't had luck running non-Safari browsers on my iphone so ads are making me crazier and crazier. Now I just want DIFFERENT ads.
Yes, cars with non-tactile interfaces are terrible... it is exactly like using a cell phone. When I get a loaner for my car, I notice this very much and have to catch myself not putting myself at risk of an accident for simple things like turning on heat in the seats. It's a little crazy.
I have an old iPad 2 (I think) that won't accept any more updates. It'd be nice if Apple made a special update for old devices just for this, since it completely destroys security.
How selfish of you to suggest they not use "individualist". Just kiddin'!
On another note, it's all the people trying to help others that destroy traffic in my neck of the woods. They are constantly coming to a complete halt to allow side roads to enter the main highway. They think they are helping the line of 3 guys trying to exit their neighborhood, but they fail to realize it is causing 250 cars behind them to have to jam on their brakes and come to a complete stop. Look in the rear view you unselfish selfish people!!!
One thing to keep in mind, no matter how much money the business owners want, they'll always want humans to talk to. If you are in the US, might I remind you to put on deodorant, shower daily, have a few small talk options available at short notice, and learn to be nice to people... it might just keep you employed when the robots take over.
Seriously though, advice from humans can be emotional... advice from AI is always cold. Business people react half rationally and half emotionally. They always need their lieutenants. And the best bosses like to chat about real life (or video game life) just as much as business... so no, I don't think robots are going to replace every job in existence.
Not sure what they were studying, but if you tied yourself to a chair with rough rope or heavy chains, then watch TV nonstop... you won't enjoy it as much. Repeat this a few times and you also will probably get vein problems in your legs, less muscle mass, higher body fat, weaker lungs, cooties, the uglies and who knows what else. People, for fucks sake stop sitting in front of a TV for a quarter of a day at a time!!!!
You quote km/h, not mile per hour. I take it you aren't from the US. That's some impressive knowledge of how things work for a country you aren't from. While you are impressing me, is English your 3rd language despite it being completely fluent? Where am I going with this? I do not know, but I thought it was entertaining to think about so... yeah... I was compelled to type it up. While I am here, I should probably comment on the main topic at hand... but I just don't have a strong opinion on it yet. Carry on!
Slow and crappy. Yes, before I read anything in the article I'm going to comment b/c I have known for all time that flat GUI is bad GUI. Slower to see where you are and what is in focus. Simple as that. I noticed it in Windows since 7... I never know what window is in focus and I always hesitate, then click when I should double click, or double click when I didn't need to in order to grab focus on something. I can't stand slow computer interfaces, it is gross!!!!
The Matrix was basically about a bunch of hackers. I think there was one white guy in the bunch... the Mouse guy with the bleeding ears. Otherwise, you had Neo, who is half-Hawaiian, Trinity and lots of females in general, Morpheus and lots of black or brown people, a New Zealander, etc. Tank that had the cool Latino(?) accent. Almost forgot Cypher... he is a white guy.
Essentially all the bad guys are pure white guys, and 99% of them are just programs.
Mr. Robot... the guy is Egyptian blooded. Is that white? Several black and female hackers on that show.
Anyway... just thought that was sort of interesting that even with The Matrix and a more modern "Mr. Robot" with a vast amount of non-white guy representation, we still need more apparently. I think people who care need to get back to the liberal basics... all humans are worth something no matter the color of their skin, where they come from, or their beliefs.
I think the thing that Elon is getting right, and most of the anti-Elon people are avoiding, is that fact that all complex software systems are buggy as can be. Anytime humans rely on software in the wrong way, they will get bit by bugs, mistakes, etc. As long as governments understand that 1960 style "press a button and it will work" type technology has given way to "Hire 1000 software engineers, churn them in and out, make a profit, patch the problems later... the software is guaranteed to work eventually" technology, well hopefully we'll keep things under control. That is, until it's all hooked up to some crazy network that spans every computer in the world and allows hackers access from the comfort of their bedroom... but that will never happen, right?
I would not ever want my kid posting to Twitter or anything like it until he/she was old enough to know what the hell was going on. So like 40 years old. I sure as hell don't need a schoolgrade teacher telling them they have to use those social media sites. At the least, they better have a bunch of fake names and all that established so it's not an outright violation of privacy.
I've seen this sort of thing too with my Vietnamese and Chinese friends from college. It definitely seems like hiding your child from normal immune development at early ages is the biggest trigger for allergy problems. The nice thing is that if they can cure kids of a peanut allergy that can straight up kill you, there is a great amount of hope for people with mild allergies. And it doesn't have to be a doctor doing it.
One of my kids has allergies to... well to *something* in the air. Probably pollen or mold. We don't give him a bunch of immune suppressing who-knows-what-kind-of-side-effects allergy medicine, except once during a trip out of town because it was ruining his trip and making him freak out. We see signs that over time his allergies are getting less and less problematic, and I'm willing to bet, just like dear old dad, he will be 100% allergy free as an adult (confirmed by testing from an allergy specialist... I do have a bit of acid reflux though).
The thing that leads to less kids in the most "modern/industrial" societies, that final mile if you will, is parents being overworked. Working 40+ hours a week, and then the commute, and then the hour lunch which often is just wasted time hanging out at work and eating for half of it. And both parents being forced to work to be "normal". I see my kids a few hours each evening. I see my coworkers... well, nearly 40 hours a week.
We need less of a population, but I'm not sure working people into bad health, unhappy relationships, and fucked up families is the way to do it. Sending babies to daycare at age 2 months is NOT FUCKING NORMAL!!! Yet 99% of the people around here do that. Kids being at some before and after care thing during elementary ages is not perfect either. Hell one of my kids is more attached to the worker at the day care than to the kid's grandparents. WTF?!
Anyway... I can rant about this forever, please excuse me. You had good points, but I hate seeing the population overworked. I was reading something about a billionaire the other day, and it occurred to me if you took his billion dollars and spread it out to a thousand people, they'd all be millionaires. Wow, wealth is really not distributed too well is it?
My boy loves playing games on tablets. I was a gamer growing up... different video games but, I definitely could spend too much time on some games, so I keep a close eye on my kid. Sometimes when his friends come over, they all sit around a couple of tablets and play and mostly never shut up either.
Other times, I chase them outside and tell them "no phones, tablets, tvs, or computers for a while... go exercise!". They then sit on the swingset and chat for 1 to 2 hours without stopping in most cases.
Conclusion? My 10 year old mostly ignores his family too much when on the tablet. If his friends come over, he talks to them almost nonstop even when he is playing.
Shade is a huge factor in hot, humid places. Take it from me, living in the mid south US. In the summer, older homes or country homes with big shade trees allow you to do things outdoors even when it is very hot. No way can you do that on cement with no shade.
When I lived 10 miles away in an apartment in the city, I couldn't do any outdoor activities during the afternoons in the summer. At my suburb home now, it is fine if I stay in the shade.
I had friends from areas of the world not far from the regions they are talking about in this article, where it is (by the thermometer) hotter and wetter than even in the state I live in, but when they lived in the apartments next door they said it felt much hotter here.
This is heading us into a scary and evil world. Not to mention all the screw-ups that will happen. Edit gene blah to fix pimples... whoops that gives you an automatic heart attack at age 30.
A few years back I remember seeing all the Chinese scientists talking about editing human genes so that they would not crave meat. It'd be cheaper to feed them that way. GREAT IDEA, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?!!!!
Push notifications on web pages? No way in hell would I trust that, are you crazy? Kudos to Apple for avoiding it. Just like Apple helped kill Flash, I hope they help kill this new invader.
At first it felt like by being annoying to their customers calling in, the customers would give up calling in and deal with suffering. Sounds like people are fed up to the max and are calling in more because of more problems.
It all comes back to poor service. If you provide a great service, you get less calls. If your provide a bad service, you get more calls. If your call-in number provides even worse service, you get even more calls because nothing gets resolved.
HELLO COMPANIES OF THE WORLD, provide good quick reliable service, in the field and on the phone, customers will be more happy, and you'll get less angry calls.
The birth control in the water was a thing at least as far back as the 90s in the UK from what I remember. I don't think eating tofu actually causes harm though from what I've read.
What scares me is not just the birth control runoff in drinking water, but all the other scary ass chemicals that might be in there that we all consume. It can't be too healthy.
You might try out a home bread maker... couple hundred bucks from Amazon, but my god it is about 1000 times better than the chemical laden junk in stores in the US at least.
Without a doubt. Wow, how time has flown. Thank you Slashdot, you have some great stuff most of the time.

Agreed on that. Flat interface that makes it hard to know where things are just slow the user down. It's no fun.

I applaud the idea around this phone. Spying on bad guys is fine... spying on normal people is evil.
