  1. New switch ad on Baked Apple · · Score: 2, Funny

I had a PC, and I put it in the oven, and like, baked it for a while, and like it went beep bloop buzz and then exploded. It was a bummer.. It ruined my stove, it was a really good stove too. So then I got a powerbook, and like, then when I baked that, it like bent a little, but still worked and stuff.

My name is Joe, and I'm a moron.

  2. Have you tried a drugstore? on Carmack Needs Rocket Fuel · · Score: 1

I feel like I'm missing something.. I just checked drugstore.com.. 99 cents for 16oz. Ok, I realize buying 50,000 bottles from a drugstore isnt realistic, but this stuff is clearly regularly available. He seems to be complaining that he tried one place and they gave him the run around.

The fact that anyone was upset about this is very disturbing to me. Marvel wanted to get their action figures classified as 'toys' instead of 'dolls' so they could pay less tariff. Whoopee. Fans are 'up in arms'? Give me a break.

  9. new.. in 1977 on Did Life Originate Underwater? · · Score: 2

Theories about life starting underwater have been around ever since hydrothermal vents were discovered, I beleive, in 1977. The fact that they say organic life developed out of inorganic materials isn't really revolutionary. I mean, the first organic life couldn't have evolved from other organic life, thats paradoxical.

  10. Re:That sounded anti-TiVo on When Profiling Goes Wrong · · Score: 3, Funny

I must say, I almost never actually like anything it records for me as a suggestion. I hardly every bother to do the thumbs up/down, so the TiVo just goes based on what I explicitly record. I have only one season pass, for the simpsons, and then usually record shows one off here and there. This gives some eclectic suggestions.

Basically my TiVo seems to think I'm a violent (sopranos) child (simpsons) chef (iron chef). This means I get mostly random cooking shows and cartoons that I have no interest in whatsoever. Lately its obsessed with trying to get me to watch dexter's laboratory.

If you want to be fair, consider this, Google is a fantastic service. Probably (no, definitely) the single most useful thing on the internet, and the most useful thing all around since duct tape. And its free. So I'd say they are doing ok by the community. Think it would exist if they hadnt 'sold out' and started taking money for tiny little non intrusive ads? I don't think so, and that would suck.

  18. Re:I'm not buying into this... on Microsoft takes on PDF · · Score: 2

First off I think Adobe makes great products and I think it will be very hard for MS to attack their niche. That being said, I wouldn't be so sure that it will take a long time for other vendors to support MS's new 'standard'. MS can make it very hard for ISVs to exist if they want to. For instance, it would be a big problem for most software houses if they didn't get to test or even see Longhorn or whatever new version of windows and start porting their product to it until it hit the retail shelves. Good or bad, MS is still the 800lb gorilla of the industry, and pissing it off can be bad for your existence if you depend on selling products that run under their OS.

The article has pretty much 0 content, but I suspect this is an important step because one combined company with no cash struggling to survive while developing a product that is really far off can last twice as long as two seperate ones. Maybe even long enough to see the product come to fruition, or more likely long enough for some major electronic component maker to buy them and really bring the products mainstream.

  24. Is it really encryption? on Encrypt Information In Images Without Distortion · · Score: 5, Informative

Sounds like 'encrypt' isnt exactly the right word here. Maybe 'encode' would have been better. From the very tech light article it seems that this is a watermarking technique which somehow embeds the watermark with no distortion of the image whatsoever. Traditional watermarks distort the image, albeit usually not noticeable to the casual naked eye.
