I'm serious. Why would I bother with this product if I get around on my bicycle, for example? I need to be able to haul stuff, and I would love to have something like this for that purpose.
Notice though that the newspapers never thought of it until Google tried to get in.
I'd say that this isn't completely accurate. They didn't make a move until after Google's plans became public. Whether these print media companies actually had this plan on the drawing board before Google's announcement is something we can't, won't, and don't know.
I read some of the comments and it seems like people are saying that this is a desperate attempt to save the newspaper industry. I don't think it's desperate at all - I think it's actually a wise choice. The players are engaging in what's called a "vertical market" - in case anyone overlooked this fact - in order to serve the needs of the core business.
They're not trying to save the ship: they're building a better ship.
... how about testing a new system to give psychotherapy to troubled soldiers when they come home from the war?

How Many Windows?

Windows open on my OSX desktop:
1. Firefox (tabs: 1. my current project, 2. phpmyadmin for current project, 3. slashdot) 2. Textwrangler 3. NeoOffice spreadsheet (timesheet, YES I am clocked out right now!) 4. Thunderbird 5. iTunes 6. Azureus (bittorrent)
That's it, although I have more open windows when I'm using Fire (OSX IM client).
I work from home as a freelance web developer / web development consultant. During the work day, Internet connectivity is as necessary for my work as oxygen is for my body.

Our local transit authority, TriMet, has a voice menu system for the "Call A Bus" bus schedule hotline. It's terrible.

Why the hell do parents let their kids on the internet unattended? If a child meets an online predator online its the parents fault for letting their kid on the internet alone.
I think the real problem is when children meet online predators offline, and when the parents don't ask what their children are going to do when they're about to go out.
If Microsoft is going to release an "iPod Killer", you can bet your bottom dollar that Apple will one-up Microsoft with a player that's 100x better.
Apple, I'm sure, does not want to be outdone by Microsoft. I'll wait until Apple's response to the Microsoft media player before I vote with my dollar.
This may also put a stop to the sweatshop-like use of outsourced labor in China, in regard to harvesting gold and weapons from multi-player online games.

Quoted from the story:
If you have bad intentions and want to get a reputation, hacking Google is the best way to get credibility on the streets.
I don't know if you've ever been to West Oakland, but I seriously doubt that hacking Google is going to win me any credibility on the streets here.
... unless hacking Google gives you gold chains a bulletproof Buick.
We've been using Joyent and are very happy. I've used EC2 for a few things and I think Joyent is more economical for many applications.

Just putting that out there...

This hardly seems newsworthy, and the Slashdot writeup reads like an advertisement.
Boo.
Maybe everyone will have to switch to the BSD license. Take that, trolls: BSD is not going to die! :)
Well, maybe it's a slight exaggeration. But: No Internet = No Work = Upset Clients = No Money :)

The Internet cannot get you drunk. I should know, I've tried.
But, the Internet is more fun when you're drunk. I have amply demonstrated this to my friends through MySpace.

Or OpenOffice? Word processors are good at processing, uhm, words... you know.
Wow, did anybody else notice how awful the navigation is on that page?
Don't we already have regular expressions for this kind of stuff?

You could stop playing games on your laptop. Obviously, this seems to be the source of your problems.... heh.

Yes, and perhaps we will also find perpetual motion among the melted ice caps!
If all these people break off from the Internet that we know and use today, does that mean that switching to IPv6 is no longer an issue?
Think of all the IPv4 addresses that we'll get back!
