  1. that it really doesn't matter what humans do, or don't do, , because when it's time for mass extinction, it's time for mass extinction? Because 252m years ago, there were no people around to cause this.

    I guess there should be some hue and cry about escaping Earth, and creating other places as biological refuges, but I don't know if we actually deserve it.

    I don't even have to look at the broadband maps to tell you they are hopelessly optimistic.

    If you zoom out far enough in coverage maps, everything is fine. There is a limit on how far you can zoom in though.

    As to why the FCC accepted and didn't verify the accuracy of the "providers" data, that is a question some congressional investigatory body should dig into.

    Is there any way I can get a chunk of the 4.5 billion available for rural broadband? I promise to do just as well as any existing corporate provider has done thus-far.

    I still have and use the Android 2.1 tablet I bought I have no idea how long ago. It's mostly for reading books on. It also has OSM on it with GPS, so I can download a ton of maps and use it when I'm traveling.

    Security 101, deny unauthorized hardware from connecting to the local network, either hardwired or via WIFI. Especially when having anything to do with banks. Going cheap never works well with networking that should be "secure".

    Switches and access points are pretty trivial to setup to deny access.

    If it's someone "looking to cash in" on the data, what are an additional 500 Million (guessing that there is a whole lot of repeat customers in this data set) records worth?

    Used to be hard to get enough information for single credit cards, nowadays you would probably have to sell blocks of 10K records for a couple bucks. All these types of hacks are doing is to really devalue the data they are stealing to the point where it's not actually of much value.

    Don't forget all the SOHO wireless routers, NAS storage devices, probably TVs, DVRs, and a whole pile of other home appliances.

    The one place Linux has been way behind is on the Desktop/Laptop,

      Microsoft has been fighting tooth and nail to keep Linux Desktop at bay. Giving away millions of free copies of Windows 10 was part of this strategy.

    This is being typed on a battered old laptop running Xubuntu with xfce. I think I booted Vista on once to check if it supported manual fan controls. It's probably 7 years old and works fine for me (I am not a gamer on PC systems)

      Of course then there is the problem of "local" search engines returning different results for French, Spanish, German,,, searches which would indicate preference to whatever skewed algorithms rhw EU creates to achieve "parity".
