Somewhat off topic but related. Has anyone attempted / succeded in having their computer answere blocked calls? The detection would seem to be staright forward, ie an anonymous call. Having your machine say "HELLO" would also seem straight forward. From there you get into voice recognition and Turing. Has anyone tried this?
A telemarketer talking to your machine is not bothing anyone else. How many machines would it take to suck up most of the telemarketing time?
I am suspicious of one system/device being able to decode both Direct TV and Dish. The encryption systems are quit different as for as I know. Did he develope a seperate device to crack each one? From what I have read , Direct TV is the easer of the two to crack. And they have some reason to be worried.
What ever wire/cable you run you will wish it was something else 4 years from now. Run conduit if you must run something.
I ran lots of phone line and some coax when I had the walls open. Later ran better coax (RG6). I now use cordless phones. Later fished CAT 5 into a number of rooms. radio link is now replacing CAT 5 Wish I had another run of coax to each room
(second satelite)
Does EVERYONE in your household want to listed to the same music? Best each room have a seperate set up.
I would ask , " who gains by the discrediting of Linux?". There may be many answers , but at the top of any list has got to be Microsoft. This looks a lot like a very effective FUD campaign on the the part of MSFT with SCO as a front.
Direct TV is hot on this and if what I have read is correct, they have to be. It seems that their encryption system is not all that hard to crack. Much easier than DISH( ExpressVu). Direct TV has and has had a running battle with this, just another chapter. Sort of like the spam blockers, its the game that counts.
When I installed my new version of Slackware ( kind of tips off where this is going doesn't it) I tried KDE. It was pretty and pleasant but I could not figure out how to slide from window (view port ? ) to window. Where do you set the edge resitance in KDE? Anyhow back to fvwm , maybe next time I will try GNOME. I agree with some of the other posts , why make it look like windows? Make it look like what you want.
Employers pay a percent of all employee's salary into a fund. The rate is usually (in OREGON) based on experience (number of people layed off). This maybe an incentive for a restrictive non compete agreement. If you can't draw benefits the rate is not adversely affected (ie raised).
However washington (there is no R is washington) was part of Oregon, Oregon territorry that is. When Oregon became a state in 1859 (Valentines day) there was some stuff left over ie Washington, Idaho,... Not sure why the Oregonians of the day didn't want it.
It is always wise to take the "all the jobs are leaving stories" with a grain (or 2 ) of salt. Jobs leave for many reasons. Wage rates are one. But consider; if wages are all then Bangledesh would be a booming country. What kind of jobs are leaving? low paid ones, high paid one? How much education is required, transportation of the output, tax stucture... Does the arguement "lets keep all the low paying jobs here " sound like a good thing? I for one would like to keep the high paying jobs here. Reality howver; dictates a mix, and this is where support of education comes in. Better supported education , with a better educated work force mean a higher paid work force, in general.
because slackware 8.1 will not install on the drive in my 486 firewall. Slackware 7.0 handles most everything just fine. I may have to replace ipchains but that ain't 2.2.
As to why change... You change when the software you need, needs the new version to run or the installation on the old is so much bother updateing that the new is worth it.
I wish this was happening for a better reason, but our budget mess has to be a driving force. The State of Oregon is really hurting money wise.
When I worked for the Univ of Oregon Bus Office Linux was was not a consideration. Maybe this will raise the visibility of linux. It may be comming at a good time. The VAX running VMS are getting old.
Consider doing your part to waste the telemarketers time. If I am not busy I will sometimes answere and string them along, some get wise faster than others. Think of it as gift to your fellow man.
You can also argue with them. My best was when one telemarketer told me "you don't deserve to live on this plant" and then hung up on me.
A good telemarketing call can get the juices flowing again. Sometimes better than a cup of coffee.
I assume that these devices contain somesort of solid state circuitry. Therefore they could/should be vulnerable to an EM pulse. The question , how strong? My guess would be not much would be needed or the strips would be to big/expensive.
I am glad they got rid of the 21 and 23 lb blocks.
I am always suspicious when I see something is 2.2 lb or 22 lb etc.
It usualy is false accuracy. The guy said somthing like " they weight about 10 kg and viola 22 lb.. 20 lb would be a more likely conversion since the first figure was an estimate.
How many times in the paper have you seen a report of a 22 lb bomb going off. How did they know? Maybe it realy was a "10 kg bomb" ie an estimate.
I kept looking for Hoss.
It might have improved it if he had shown up.
The French are not as prone to lawsuits as we in the USA. They assume you will look out for yourself.
I must admit I chickened out when I saw the thing.
But people were riding it , and having no problems that I saw.
Thought: Why be in a hurry when in Paris?

I could do without the "I don't know what it does
so vote no group".
Maybe it is just a "rite of spring"
This looks like a problem that I will post on my worry list right below "getting the stamps on the envelope straight"
