"and annoying fixation with pinning down our name, address, and serial numbers"
Ya, god forbid they'd want to ship you a replacement part or know who they are talking to. I have no clue why this is a negative point.
One thing I really like is calling HP phone support. I've dealt with them several times over the past 2 weeks for server issues. They have one of those automated voice response systems that ask you what product you are calling about and what operating system it uses. I only had a problem once when I didn't answer clearly enough and ended up routed to the wrong support que.
It's really a crapshoot with any company, it all comes down to how responsible the guy on the other end of the line is.

I had similar experiences recently. I decided to switch my G*teway PC from windows to linux. Nothing worked "out of the box" except Ubuntu. So far I have succeeded copying 250+ CD's into FLAC, but that's about all I have bothered with so far. I want to completely switch away from Windows at some point, but as far as ease of use goes I will probably find myself in a Mac store sooner or later, unless Linux can progress to a point that avoids the negatives you speak of.
Who edits these things? I'm glad I don't pay to read this site, the editing is horrible. Slightly more on topic, I never see the BSOD anymore unless it's a hardware problem. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough...
Thanks for the response. I've been toying with the idea of a Mac and will have to give it some more thought.
One application that I found recently through a friends school project, is Audacity and was quite amazed. One reason I started leaning towards Linux is due to the fact that this software seems to have many more Linux plugins then Windows based.
Stability is certainly a major factor and one to reckon with it would seem...
I've recently been looking into running Linux on my primary desktop to record music with. I could never get the Knoppix live CD to run correctly on my Gateway X700 system. I'll have to try this version and see if I can get anything to work.
Linux has been a frustration of mine for the past 4 years. I know a smattering of Unix commands and even armed with that I still can't ever seem to get a program downloaded and working like I can with windows. I'm looking forward to trying it again before I make the move to DeMudi.
I don't know what anti-virus programs you are referring to here, but I've never had an issue with either Symantec Or Network Associates not updating after a virus outbreak. Updates to those anti-virus programs tend to come out within a day or so of any major virus outbreak for the most part.
I do remember the old jokes about the Anti-virus companies being the ones that actually wrote all the virus, and iirc Symantec did at least at one time write virus to test thier scanning engine's etc.
I think you might want to check your beliefs about anti-virus against the facts before you lose all your pr0n.
"The iPod, while not jam-packed with features, is fast and stable."
Oh really? Why do I have to do a Hard Reset then, everytime I wish to use my Ipod? I bought the 15Gig version, and I've all but abandoned it because of this. That, as well as the fact that I can't replace the battery (and it's allready well over halfway through its lifespan), has caused me to look elsewhere.
I really wanted to fall in love with the ipod, like I've seen so many others do before me. Too bad mine had warts I suppose:(
FTA - "Doug: I back up every couple of days to DVD. I'm looking into blu-ray DVD burners because they will hold more. But right now I am backing everything up to DVD and then those DVD's are stored in my safe, and another set is stored off site."
Also he uses 250gig firewire drives for his primary storage.
With all the money this guy spent on storage, macs and DVD backups, He could have saved alot by just cutting out the middle man and driving to a record store.
In the recently released expansion for the original Everquest, titled "Omens of War"( http://everquest.station.sony.com/omensofwar/overv iew.jsp ), SoE (Sony Online Entertainment) introduced a voice system where the sound files reside on the local machine. These sounds were all done by 2 people; 1 male and 1 female. There is also an ability to add your own sound with the caveat that only you will be able to hear that sound (a la Baulders Gate).
The voice system has been generally agreed upon as crap in this expansion. If they were to tweak it so that voice commands could be given during the game, say by your group or raid leader, then it might be worth something. However as another poster said, I never played Everquest with the sound on because the music never used to work on systems running Win2k or XP. Took them 3+ years to get the music to work in Everquest.
On the down side the board has no AGP slot. The review suggests that this is livable, but I disagree. I wonder if you could retrofit the machine with a better graphics card using the PCI slot and disable the onboard graphics? I've done this with older HP vectra's when their onboard video chips go out... I do like the idea of being able to have a fairly high speed system which can be easily concealed and the design seems fairly well thought out...

That this site is indeed a farce. http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/news/article/for get_me_not_panties_05260101/

I doubt he'll object as he is a teacher now.
I'm currently considering being my own label and selling CD's through CD Baby. My experience with them has been positive so far.
Oh I can install it just fine. It's the whole compiling source code/lack of easy ways to install applications that I had a rough time with.
;)
Actually your suggestion did in fact boot on my Gateway x700 while knoppix 3.7 did not. I haven't burned the CeBit version yet as I'm still sharing
Thanks for the url! Another torrent for the que ;)
I was not aware of auppix, thanks for the link!

It appears that in fact the OP did mean Mike Batt after all: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/227 6621.stm

Watt?
Batt!
I get it now.
The gentleman from Ciccone Youth was Mike Watt. (not Batt as the op seems to say).

And I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
Ipods do in fact play Mp3.
They can also be used as a hard drive.

the MIT alumni magazine, has an article by Simson Garfinkel
I first parsed that as Simon Garfunkel...
Site says "Advanced lithium polymer battery" under the specs page... /shrug
didn't see anything about longevity...
It doesn't even say Hi-Fi anywhere on it. (Hi-Fi is a technical term for High Fidelity.)
;)
Probably because mp3 is ~ 1/12th the quality; it really should say Lo-Fi
