certainly it wouldn't do much good if all the chunks of asteroid hit the earth, but if it were blown apart so that a smaller amount of the asteroid hit, the damage would be less.
it seems better to at least try, if the asteroid is going to hit anyway.
the argument that "it could be worse if the asteroid is broken apart" is meaningless if leaving it intact still means extinction.
Most important: Photoshop. I asked several Adobe people at the last Siggraph, and they told me that they would not port to Linux until more people are using it on the desktop.
Chicken & egg problem again...
The other things that keeps me from switching completely are Adobe Premiere, Dreamweaver, Flash, Lightwave, and Sound Forge. There is nothing so far that can replace any one of those apps. I haven't looked very far for an audio editor, but I know that video editing on Linux is a joke. And yes, I am aware of the many ways of creating web sites, but nothing I've seen comes close to the power of Dreamweaver.
At least my most often used apps, Maya and Shake, are already there.
children's shows? sealab 2021, home movies, oblongs, and now futurama are among the only watchable things on television. most of the anime on tv is uninspired shite.
there could be one on each side, and the image would be projected like a texture map on the opposite side. maybe some bright ones on the bottom to eliminate shadows...
then again, the cameras could cause problems for the group of wounded soldiers hiding on the other side of the tank.
I didn't even read the original post, but I'm sure I know what he is talking about..
CG effects for movies is certainly better than stop-motion and other analogue effects, but the problem is that we are getting too many movies that only exist to feature new eye candy.
It's also way overused even when its not an "effects movie".. to the point where the entire film is shot against a green wall, and the actors are the only things that are real.
I think Episodes 1 & 2 look like shit compared to the original trilogy, just because of all the set extensions. At least all the rubber suits and cheap sets looked -real-.
this has been news for at least a week now, and still, nothing is available on the website or sourceforge. the cvs tree is empty. forums empty. if it weren't for LoTR being rendered with it, I would consider this vaporware...
.. is Bayesspam 2.x for Squirrelmail. Its an easily installable plugin for a php-based webmail system, that uses MySQL to store the Bayesian corpus. It's also got options to limit the size of the messages to be filtered, and displays the spam probability and the 'mark as spam/nonspam' links in each email header.
Those sharp, raytraced-looking shadows do not look realistic, they look like crappy computer generated fake shadows. Real shadows are soft, and become less noticeable at a distance.
The area lighting is a big improvement, but it also removes some of the simulated radiosity that was originally part of the Quake surfaces. (look at before & after page #1)
I also think the specular highlights have been way overdone. Every surface seems to be very shiny (and bumpy), and it really shows off the low resolution of the textures.
Or maybe I'm just expecting too much of this brand new expensive nvidia 750xgl. I'll have to spend a few more thousand for really nice shadows.
a guy i knew somewhere in the 317 area code actually named his daughter Kali after that wonderful program. (anyone from the area remember the megasphere bbs?)
"I'm a Lightwave animator, so spare me the 'Linux will solve all your problems' crap."
Actually, Newtek has announced a free Lightwave renderer for Linux, which will be available sometime Q4 2002. For me, its all up to Adobe and Macromedia.
remember -why- these certain stories get higher priority.. the media is in business to get ratings, which mean money. well, where do you think those ratings come from? its the mass audience that decides what they want to see. don't complain about the evils of capitalism when its the fault of millions of desensitized bloodthirsty viewers.
This has already been in use for years! Its been featured in countless movies, along with the systems that can "enhance" fine detail out of 4 pixels of NTSC video.
Apple originally acquired Nothing Real for the technology behind Shake, for fairly obvious reasons. However, the purchase of Rayz makes no sense to me, other than to simply buy the competition. Silicon Grail did not have any amazing technology of its own, it was all licensed from Kodak/Cineon. In fact, Rayz was painfully slow on many systems because of its lack of opengl support.
So the only reason I'm opposed to this is that Apple now owns 2 of the 3 top compositing software companies. I could care less about losing Rayz... I want my Shake back.
Since the motor is located on the outer edges of the fan, would this have any effect on the lifespan of the fan? How about dirt accumulation?
The main problems I have with my cooling fans are balance, and dirt. When a fan has been running for a long enough time, somehow its balance shifts, and makes horrible loud noises. My server box is located in my closet, on the floor, with plenty of dust getting sucked into the case. It eventually got so bad that it caused the power supply fan to stop moving... If this new fan design can overcome or lessen these problems, then I'll buy them as soon as they are available!
the newest pentium 4 processors are needed to fully "experience" websites, and streaming video.
and that somehow, a lesser PC hooked up to a cable modem has a slower internet connection compared to a P4 system on a similar cable.

The most common sound editing app for the Mac is ProTools, but I don't know if its been ported to OSX yet.
And of course there's Final Cut Pro for video, but there is no chance of Apple porting it to Linux, if it were even possible.
In fact, that program would be my main reason to buy a Mac -- that, and Shake for OSX is $5000 less than the Linux version.

I don't remember porn being illegal...
Anyway, there are bands who don't mind their music being traded, independent films that are only released online, etc.
not to mention the link to the "help file" on that last screenshot..
http://winweb/setup/winntexe.htm
and the fact that a screenshot from a command-line-only DOS startup exists at all.

mine is now closed as well..
and they received a nice email detailing exactly why it was closed.

Which film would make more sense if you saw a penis in it?
Fight Club. It actually had something to do with the story.
It always seems to run better when I compile my own drivers anyway...
/usr/src/redhat/i386/nvidia*
and it's not difficult, two extra steps should not cause the average users to turn away.
rpm --rebuild nvidia-kernel.x.x.srpm
rpm --rebuild nvidia-GLX.x.x.srpm
rpm -Uvh

this is really more like ANSI art than ASCII..
though i still consider ANSI to be a great art form.

slashdot won't allow you to post long "words" such as that .. you should create an html <A> link instead.
remember that 128kb means 128 kiloBITS .. which is equal to 16KB (kiloBYTES)
you are indeed getting what you paid for.
