Next thing you know, oil derricks are going up everywhere and the Auction House is being policed for contraband. Elves in tinted sunglasses and black suits are on the street corner tracking a gnome who is notorious for selling faulty dynamite.

My biggest gripe? The water. The 360 has plenty of horse power under the hood... so why arent there some sembelence of waves?! Battleships sit mightly in the water as you shoot your infinite rounds into their hulls. They don't move. You drop bombs on them. They take damage, nothing really visible except some smoke effects you'd expect from the N64. When you finish of a ship and it sinks, what happens? Nothing. The water just sits there happily reflecting the sunset, completely undisturbed.

It might be worth the rental, but this game isn't going to keep your attention for more than an hour or two.

Perhaps they would do this without simulated weaponry, perhaps they wouldn't. But they got the idea somewhere. I just wish people would quit blaming games and movies and hold parents responsable. Lazy parents whose TV watching time can't be interrupted to interact with their children shouldn't be suprised if/when the kids grow up to be gang members or cocaine addicts. Oh, and turning your head long enough to tell them what not to do isn't it either, nor is handing them some plastic guns and telling them to go have fun. Go play with your kids. Even if you're playing WWII, at least they get to play with the most important people in their lives. Just take a moment to explain why WWII was fought.

Aside from a different plot, and prettier graphics, I'd say the most noticable difference between RE 1 and 2 would be the voice acting. Which, in RE1, whas laughable at best. The game and its FMV's were great, but when people started talking... it took every scary element out of the game. A particular scene at the beginning of the game comes to mind. After a few of the STARS agents go missing Barry pipes up in the discussion, complete with random arm flailing, "Wait a minute.. This place is dangerous!"

But the best part is when he hands some bazooka shells to the girl (can't recall her name), "I've found a weapon.. It's really powerful!" Yeah, Barry, I'm sure you're talking about the shells. My friends and I had a few good laughs at that line. Still, the game delivered a thrill factor and I sincerely look forward to Capcom's follow up to RE4.

Also, I'd argue that if the game can't be understood without having played the games then that's just as much a failing as if an adaptation assumes you've read the novel.

I don't disagree with that. Like I said, though. The movie can be understood without playing the game. The symbolism, however is a look into the human psyche from someone else's point of view. Which really doesn't translate well across rooms or across the seas.

A friend of mine has already tried an experiment. He has played all the games and enjoyed them. He brought six people to the movie who had never seen the game. He brought two that had seen it played. And one other who had played the games, but didn't enjoy them.
The reactions were as you would suspect. Those that hadn't played/seen the games, frankly, hated the movie because it seemed too gratuitous, and the plot too unbelievable and forward. Those that had seen the game played, and the guy that had played it and not liked it (I'm not sure if he completed it) all said, "Aha!" Because the movie offered explanations the game left you to find out. They generally liked it. The friend who had played all the games enjoyed it throughly, and ranks it as the best video game made movie he has seen.

From TFA "Without the luxury of a joystick in our hands, the viewer has no chance to make the incoherent on-screen antics any better - or worse. We just sit ... and stare."

Okay, walking into a movie theatre, sitting down on the couch with a DVD, or even catching a game at the bar, we all experience Television or Movies in the same way. We can't control anything. People who go to a movie go there to see a story unfold. They don't go there to make things happen. When people go to see a movie based on a video game, they expect the same level of excitment the videogame delivers. This can never happen.

Silent Hill was probably one of the best videogame movies I've seen. The game doesn't concentrate on combat, but on storey and making you piss your pants. The movie keeps your heart unsure whether or not it's worth each heart beat. Just like the game. The movie has very little combat. The game does not focus on combat. The game has a deep story that takes forever to discover and understand. The movie uses the time you're in the theatre to deliver enough story to understand what's going on. The only problem is that if you haven't played Silent Hill 1,2, and 3, you may not understand the movie's symbolism, and thereby, believe that it's just wonton violence.

Silent Hill was good. Not the best, but good. Compare it to any other video game movie, and we're darn near a 10, at least a 9. TFA goes on to campare it to Street Fighter and Mario Bros (THE worst video game movie EVER). Not really a fair analysis. Street Fighter the game doesn't really have a plot. And Mario Bros the movie didn't have a plot. Not really a fair comparison there.

I'd say that Sony just had the proper hardware jump over Nintendo they needed to lull over the 3rd party devs. The SNES, in it's time, was easy to program, and powerful enough to handle new ideas and great graphics. Sony just took the torch from Nintendo and ran with it. CD's were the way to go because they were cheap. I think we'd all agree that cartriges are still the best idea because load times are almost non-existent. We all know Nintendo was banking on that with the N64. Unfortunately, developers didn't agree.

I hope and expect the Rev to have shorter load times than the competition just like with the GCN. Load times are why I never wanted a PS1. My friend was playing Blood Omen and it took about a minute just to access the menus and get back to the game.

If Nintendo could get some good RPGs out of SquEnix, then this will be an excelent time to be a gamer. I always hope for games that entrance me like Illusion of Gaia and Secret of Mana. Games that make me want to play them over and over like Gradius III.

Looking forward to another golden age of gaming.

  12. Small Review on Ebert Reviews 'Silent Hill' · · Score: 1
Replying to myself, what can you do?

Went and saw Silent Hill last night. I understand why Ebert couldn't communicate with his brain now. The movie is pretty well done. It's Silent Hills phycho-thriller aura through and through. Pretty true to the game. Not much (but still present) fanboyism. Pyramid head is back from number 2, but the storyline is from the original game. Either way, they did a great job capturing the feel of the game. Combat was avoided for the most part (no superheroes here) except where it makes sense (a cop kicks some ass for about 30 seconds). Your heart is given breaths of life from the main story once in a while by showing clips of Rose's husband looking for her.

The Silent Hill series is steeped in symbolism of the past. Everything in every game is a representation of hate, malice, repression and feeling. Ebert's brain didn't stand a chance.

The game plays like a movie, so it should be difficult to screw up. Just as long as they don't overdo it on the dialoge. Just keep my mind on the movie and keep it a phycological thriller like the games, and I'll be happy.

I can do this as well as any good /.er who knows windows (not saying you're not a good /.er if you don't know windows). My point is the average user may know how to reinstall the OS, but they won't know anything about the registry.
