Now that's something we really won't have to worry about here at Slashdot.
But you overlooked the obvious advantage, you can turn off annoying channels. If you don't want some content channel because it's filling up with advertisement crap you don't care about you simply shut it off. It's off your universe. That's a lot of power to wield.
Anyway, setting up a new distribution channel is relatively easy so that the powers that be can easily be kept at bay by the little guy producing quality stuff with a minimum of advertisements. That is another HUGE plus and serves as a check and balance to the power of traditional content providers who got so big due precisely to the fact that to get into tradicional distribution channels is enormously expensive. That barrier is gone and the field is level. It's time to produce quality content or die miserably.
If you're talking about clicking on the IE icon vs. clicking the M/O/Ff icon, and having the application pop up ready to roll, then keep in mind that IE loads on boot. That way, it gives you the impression of loading faster.
Not to dog on you but the average user does not need or care to keep in mind that their browser loads during boot... They care about reaction time. That excuse will not fly with the average user who will pick whatever seems to respond faster to their commands. Just my 2 cents.
And I assure you that somebody will come up with other sleazy, disgusting, wrong, and dishonorable tactics you couldn't have possibly thought about. Don't underestimate marketing departments.;)
I think the daily security updates actually support their point of commitment to security these days. But what do I know? I'm just a third world country citizen.:P
