The problem with your relativity comment is that you're assuming that time moves at a constant rate throughout the universe. Variable time speeds would account for the items we see that appear to be going faster than the speed of light in our frame of reference.

Otherwise I agree with you. The universe would never stop, but would assymtotically approach 0. We would never notice this among the local (read: billion or two light years) environment. Further out the difference in time rates between here and in distant areas might have a larger multiplier and become more apparent.

Not making the repairs strikes me as odd. If it turns out that the gouge was too big we lose the crew (including yet another teacher) and the shuttle. And they'll never know if the repair would have saved them. If the gouge didn't need repairs we get to find out how the repairs hold up under real world conditions.

Also, this would a chance to test the repair kits in a real world scenario. It's a simple 2x2 matrix of whether is works or not and whether it was needed or not. The only problem is if the repair doesn't work and was needed, but then the results are the same as if you've done nothing.

The only time you wouldn't want to do the repairs is if there's a threat that the repairs either make things worse or the act of doing the repairs causes more damage. If these are the case then NASA needs to rethink the repair procedures.

When will you people learn that money taken from human exploration DOES NOT automatically go to non-human exploration. VA, HUD, and NASA are all part of the same budget. Don't you think VA could make some huge claims to all that money that you've thankfully freed for them?

Probes are fine for science and advance work, but alone they do nothing to defend the human race. There many thing natural or man-made which can doom us. Having people elsewhere reduces the risk to the species.
