Eli Lilly decides to buy interstate 70 through Indianapolis. Okay, that could actually be good because Lilly might do a better job maintaining the motorway. But then they turn around and say that, since they own the road, their employees and delivery vehicles are allow to go 120Mph, regular folk must drive 55mph, and their competitors must restrict their speed to 25mph. Oh, and the CEO can go as fast as his European supercar can take him.
I don't think he's talking about the actual science of computing, but rather the business and basic concepts of it.
Most of this could be accomplished with just the slightest shift in approach to subjects already being taught. The basics of CompSci are at least as as important as knowing who fought whom in the Civil War, so include Babbage, Lovelace, Turing, and the like in history classes. Mathematics could include all the basic logic gates: AND, OR, XOR, NOT. PolySci and Social studies should include sections on how statistics are aggregated with software, and the stable marriage algorithm would be good subject matter. Teachers could even ditch the TI-84 and teach computational mathematics with numPy. Any business class should include an eCommerce and internet/email marketing component that at least touches on the basics of HTML/CSS and how to copy & paste PayPal button code.
W3C has done a fantastic job pushing for cross-browser/platform standards. The App market is still going through iOS-vs-Android war, so it only makes sense to develop an app for projects that need to do a lot of client-side processing, and where the demand will make-up for the extra cost of developing the same app twice. For content delivery and e-commerce, mobile apps aren't even contenders against dynamic web apps, but maybe if we can get to a standard where a single app works equally well on iOS as on Android, then maybe the apps will win out. Until then, it's too expensive to develop a whole app if server scripting, HTML and javascript libraries can do a better job, and work equally well on all devices, for a fraction of the cost.
If you have to have an official "Military Censor" because videos of your own soldiers' domestic actions are "inflammatory," you're well on your way to creating a military dictatorship.
I'm no longer able to use Windows; it's utterly useless to me for anything but gaming, which thanks to Steam and Wine, I now do entirely on Linux.
All I want is a decent tablet with detachable keyboard that runs Linux where I can do quick code updates, run python and ruby on rails, and git. I've tried Cygwin, and it almost kind of works, but it's just so much better to have a full Linux command line and gnome apps.
I use sites like codecademy quite often, but I already have a degree. Great for learning the basic syntax of a new language or framework, or for getting a quick refresher for something I haven't used in a while. Can't say I know how successful it is for new programmers.
Keurig coffee tastes awful, it's the most wasteful way to brew *anything*, and the devices inevitably turn into large petri dishes full of algae and bacteria.
I find it somewhat unethical for them to make the claim that they have any right to control any product entity made with their software. Either make it free or don't, but what I make is what I make and I'll do with it what I please. Guess I'll stick with Blender.
So... where's the project on GitHub with jokes about Female anatomy? Maybe one with jokes about alien anatomy? GitHub projects may be publicly viewable, but they are still individuals' accounts. A person should be free to make stupid, disgusting jokes if that's their thing.
I don't think it's going to be a bright century this side of the Pond. Europe may look messy now, but they are dealing with their problems in the open while the USA keep kicking them down the road for the next gen.
In three words:
Sony Beta Max
also
Sony Mini Disc
or in just two words:
Sony Reader
Unless they've learnt a lesson from failures which resulted from overly defensive licensing, we'll be talking about how the Sony device was better, but no-one used it.
I see that Linux is now mature. Why? Because there are people who complain that "It was simpler my day. We didn't have all those extra features. If you wanted to use Linux, you had to KNOW Linux... and it helped if you knew Linus, too!"
If you live in a public school district that cranks out graduates who repeatedly out-perform the rest of the nation, send them to public school. If, like my wife and myself, you are more capable of giving your child an education than is your district, then school at home. We tried two public schools before giving up on them and teaching our son. After only one month of home-school, he has surpassed the grade which his teacher told us he might not pass. Granted, we live in a pretty awful school district.
The PM only speaks for England, and only the side who aren't really that into tech. The Scots, who are actually the leaders of technology in the UK and who barely acknowledge the existence of Mr. Cameron are overwhelmingly liberal.
Love this... except HBO is an horrible network. I'm still waiting to get my hands on GoT season 4 because they refuse to release it in the USA. Utterly deplorable that my cousin in London can buy it on Google Play and Amazon, but poor ol me has to wait almost an additional year. Bastards. No, I'm not buying an HBO subscription just because they occasionally release a good show like GoT or hopefully Foundation. It belongs on SyFy. Something so immersive as Foundation should be released in concert with a game, like Defiance... but better.
(It's only a model)

You say 'Toy' as if it's a bad thing. Toys are awesome. There's nothing quite so childish as wanting to be a grown-up.
That's not how the internet works. The ignorance is strong with this DHS.

I don't know how to live in a world in which Microsoft isn't code for a network of Bond villains. It just doesn't make sense!

I'm a 32nd-degree Master Mason and I promise we had nothing to do with this... really. Absolutely nothing. Not a blip.
