Take a look at unRaid if you haven't already. It is has a lot of the features you are looking for--it provides redundancy, will auto spin-down the drives and supports up to 20 drives. I'm in the proces of putting together a media storage server with it. Check it out at http://www.lime-technology.com/.
This might sound like flamebait but it is an honest question...So what if in English it's the Swine flu? "Swine" probably isn't even a word in these cultures that are reacting to the use of the word. And isn't it their problem if they have literally translated it into their language. Why don't they come up with their own name for the flu and use that? It's not as if they don't have their own words for everything else. The WHO and their own local media could then use the appropriate word for the appropriate culture when discussing the flu with people from that culture.
Slashdotted? We wish. Right now on the low bandwidth page they are blaming the meltdown on digg. Oh for the good old days when they automatically would have assumed it was us. Let's rally around and hit their site a couple of times to show that our dentures still have bite and a slashdotting is to be feared!
While Muslims consider Jews monotheistic Christians are seen as polytheistic because of their doctrine of the Trinity. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit does not equal one.
The name New Guinea applies to the whole island. The independant country is Papua New Guinea. The Indonesian half of the island was the province of Irian Jaya until a few years ago when it was renamed Papua. It has been/is now being divided up into a few provinces.
The scientists were working in an area in the Indonesian province of Papua.
What with all of the social conventions against staring I find it hard to imagining myself staring at some stranger's chest (especially a woman's) for 30 seconds no matter how entertaining the video is. I could see this method of advertising working better if the video was on the back of the t-shirt. I am much more likely to be caught walking behind someone for 15 to 20 seconds and if the screen was on their back most if not all of the awkwardness associated with staring would removed.
Despite some posters' excellent attempts to explain the article some people still don't get the article or the significance of the discovery. So, I shall toss my two cents worth in...
Terahertz frequencies are extremely useful for such things as imaging. You might remember, for example, this Slashdot post regarding advances in using terahertz frequencies to improve sreening devices in airports.
The downside to terahertz frequencies is that they are difficult to generate. The reserchers involved here seem to have simplified this somewhat by creating a material or "metamaterial" that will readily emit tunable frequencies in the terahertz range. This hopefully will make it all the more easier to build such imaging devices.
So, while we can't yet make all the molecules in the hostess' dress jump one foot to the left yet, we will be able to more easily make a device that will be able to see through her dress.
Ummm, no. Canada "gives the USA the finger" then due to health concerns the USA stops importing Canadian beef, and then (perhaps due to the finger incident?) the USA takes it's time allowing beef exports back in.
And no, I wouldn't expect the USA to be motivated to quickly resolve it's current issues (trade or otherwise) with Canada. My post was responding to the parent post and gave an example of why a country might "give in and do this." If billions of dollars are at stake you might just decide to bend over and take it once in awhile rather than show a little independance and suffer the consequences. To use your restaurant example . . . Mr. Independant Country usually DOES AVOID provoking waiter USA precisely because he wants prompt service and doesn't want any spit in his soup.
Prime Minister Jean Cretien of Canada essentially gave the U.S.A the finger by not supporting the invasion of Iraq and others in the Liberal party have shown a little bit of independant mindedness through such things as openly deriding George W. Bush (called him a moron).
Was it worth it? You decide. For example the goverment of the U.S.A. is taking it's sweet time resolving such things as the trade disputes over softwood lumber imports and reopening the border to Canadian beef. It's costing the Canadian economy billions of dollars. Yeah, a country may act independantly once in a while but they have to be prepared for retribution at some level if the government of the U.S.A. doesn't like your independant thinking.
We need a new stupid job posting section in Slashdot to which we can post the lastest find and have a few hundred thousand slashdotters respond to. After sifting through a couple of hundred thousand resumes these geniuses might give up posting job openings period.
Sony has surround sound headphones out. They track the orientation of the wearer's head and adjust accordingly. Check them out here. There is an IGN review of a pair here Okay, not the most reputable place for reviews so google for some others . . .
A lot of what you are requesting has already been done by the Asterix open source pbx project. They recommend using their sponsor's (Digium) hardware to interface your computer with your phone/phones but apparently other hardware is available.
Speaking of plagarism. I've been in academia for a bit and while I am not obsessed with plagarism I do respect the notion of giving credit when credit is due.
I think Slashdot should have a plagarism option for moderation. I am sure it happens on Slashdot occassionaly.
What got me thinking about this was the following two post s in the recent "Microsoft to do for Usenet what it did for Email & The Web?" discussion.

Friends and I have had good success with Toshiba laptops in high heat and humidity conditions in Asia. These laptops have run well and have held up in some pretty harsh conditions. I suspect that you'll have little trouble with a good laptop from any reputable laptop manufacturer (IBM, Toshiba, . ..).
I think one of the biggest factors to look at is whether or not the laptop contains a mobile chip. These will not only run cooler but give you longer battery life. All the laptops I've had success with have had mobile chips. A brother recently purchased a Toshiba laptop model containing a desktop chip and has had no end of trouble with it acting up due to high CPU temperatures and he lives in a temperate climate! To be fair Toshiba recently replaced the thermal transfer goop, the heatsink, and fan and it seems to be working better for him now . . . (knock on wood!)
Well thank goodness for this technology. I have been waiting for a product that will allow me to bother everyone in the room while playing video games.
Why wait? You can get the Gameboy Advance SP and start bothering everyone today!

I wonder how many slashdotters are googling themselves right now.
Bet it's a lot. Don't most of us have porn open in the next tab? I thought the whole killing a kitten thing was a myth though... Crap.

I haven't been there in about 10 years, but if I was there this year, I would be too busy dancing, sexting...
There FTFY. We can all dream but this is Slashdot...

No need to apologise, we understand, if Google ever found out your Slashdot ID there'd be serious consequences...
